The Art of SOUL! Transition Statement

The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center is proud to present a new iteration of our annual juried art show that is now called The Art of SOUL! Over the last five years of listening to and learning from participating artists, we decided to put that knowledge to use in order to build and grow The Art of SOUL! into an art show, that benefits the artists more than ever before.

The Art of SOUL! Juried art exhibition is actually an adaptation of our original, stunning exhibit called SOUL!, which opened to the public in 2009. The SOUL! exhibit highlighted a wide range of art from our collection that depicted many aspects of African American culture and life, which inspired a younger generation who had never been exposed to art by or about African Americans.

The Art of SOUL! promises to showcase the same level of diversity, skill, and breadth of perspective of all dimensions of art pertaining to African American history and culture, not only throughout the United States, but also throughout the Black diaspora. Our objectives continue to be: 1) to attract world-class artists to enter their work, 2) to have their entries evaluated by respected art professionals, 3) to cultivate relationships with art collectors and gallery owners that will connect them with the artists and, 4) to present thought-provoking programming during the run of The Art of SOUL!

Through the feedback from the artists, we have also made changes to clarify and streamline the entry submission and entry fee payment processes. Please review the attached information carefully and feel free to contact us with any questions.

Thanks again and we look forward to seeing your art submission.

Sincerely,

Charles Wash, Ph.D. Dr. Charles Wash, Director
