Following the successful art programme at the Hokett Baptist Primary School in Morvant, a group of artist of the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago (ASTT), includ-ing educators, will now move on to assist with a similar project at Success RC Primary School in Laventille. A planning meeting was held recently with staff of the School, with assistance from Hokett School, to finalise arrangements.  The  theme  of  the  art  project  is  “Success  Depends  on  Me.” It is anticipated that the project will commence with readings from novelist Earl Lovelace. It is anticipated that this will encourage students to also write and illus-trate their stories. Approximately twelve artists of the ASTT, including Jackie Hinkson, Reita Antoine, Lorenza Robinson, Patricia Frederick and Carla Franco will as-sist with the programme. The project at Success will also be expanded to include the performing arts and assistance is being sought from established groups to partner with the school and ASTT. This will culminate with an exhibition and performance at the school in which the community is expected to partici-pate. Following Success RC Primary School the project will move on to a number of other schools in the East Port of Spain catchment area. A number of public art galleries are planned to display the works of the students in their respective communities. Interested artists should contact Jim Armstrong: [email protected]

The ASTT's May Members' Group Exhibition at The Art Soci-ety's Art Gallery located in Federation Park. Celebrating the 50th  Anniversary  of  Trinidad  &  Tobago’s  Independence  and  United  Nations  Year  of  The  Cooperatives  2012…

It was once said that our perception of ourselves is created by the art of our age. It has been widely known that art acts as documentary evidence of who we were and so too can inform us of who we are now and who we may become. Nostalgia-The Old Inspires The New art exhibition, will very much symbolize these contrasting opposites in the art instal-lation.

This will be represented by all extraordinary mediums across the various disciplines of the visual arts, such as paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, photography, architecture and design, film, media and 3D installations all done by you, the Artists of Trinidad and Tobago. At present, The Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago is making every effort to deepen the success of cultural partnerships of local Artists and Coopera-tive Enterprises of Trinidad and Tobago to facilitate a chan-nel of communication through modern and contemporary art, as well as a dialogue between art of the past and that of the present.

ASTT anticipates that new perspectives can be opened up through this exhibition, which aims to express nostalgia for traditional art, craft and design that has been slowly vanishing from Trinidad and Tobago since the growth of contemporary art.

Horizons  Art  Gallery  is  proud  to  host  “The  Heart’s  Calligraphy”,  the  latest  collection  of                                artwork from Sarah Beckett. Beckett’s   current   offering   is   similarly                                                    multi-faceted. She is presenting vividly colourful oil paintings, pastels and ink and gouache drawings in four groupings: Light, Love, Earth and Mystery. Her poetry, written to accompany these paintings, will be read at a Creative Forum, which will also feature input from guest artistes such as musician Nigel Rojas and poet/film director Alex De Verteuil. Sarah  Beckett’s  exhibition  opens  at  Horizons  Art  Gallery, with a grand opening Tuesday 22nd May, 7:00pm -8:30pm. Viewing continues daily until 2nd June, Monday to Friday 9am-5:30pm, Saturday 9am-1pm. The Creative Forum takes place at Horizons At Gallery Thursday 24th May, 6:30-8:00pm. Please call 628-9769 for further

Beckett trained in France and England, beginning her career as an artist in Trinidad in 1969. Since then she has earned a reputation as one of our foremost artists, furiously active in many creative spheres. Over the past year alone she has been involved in a host of creative activities. She produced a multi-arts event,   ‘Mango   Vert’,   which   was   a   Trinidad  Quartet Productions Gala Night at the Little Carib Theatre featuring images of her paintings accompanied by rapso-style poetry and music. She directed and filmed two multi-arts cultural forums, one at the Y Gallery, and one at The Cotton Tree Foundation, in collaboration with Felipe Noguera, Roy Cape and the Jaramoji Cultural Workshop. At the National Academy for Performing Arts (NAPA), in collaboration with the UTT String Quartet, Beckett exhibited a collection of large charcoal drawings of The Passion, which was also screened during the performance of Haydn’s  Seven  Last  Words  of  Our  Saviour.  And  later in the same year she donated one of her Kairos (The Hours), part of a series of paintings of Angels, for the Trinidad Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Restoration Fund.
