I can’t believe it is already MAY!

Come out and see the Owen Chorus perform at Fine Arts Festival at Waubonsie

Valley on May 21. We sing at 10:30 am in the auditorium. There will be

performances all day beginning at 9:00am and ending around 4:00pm. Owen

artwork is also on display at Waubonsie Valley also.

Are you looking for something music related for over the summer? Here are a

few suggestions:

• 204 Summer Music Camps

Held at all 3 high schools, there are camps for band, orchestra, chorus, jazz ensemble,

and percussion ensemble. They are open to students entering 6th-12th grades in the

fall. There is also a new Orff camp this summer for students entering 4th -5th grade in

the fall. Your kids do many Orff based activities in music class already, so they would

LOVE this camp! Register online at: http://204summermusic.org

• Anima Singers Camps

If your student enjoys singing, this camp is for them. 2 groups and times are offered-

students entering K-2nd grade meets 3 times a week for 2 1/2 weeks in June. Students

entering 3rd -6th grade meet for 1 week in June. More information can be found at:

http://www.animasingers.org/p_sc.html

• Festivals

Most cities (Aurora, Naperville, and Chicago included!) host summer flings, festivals,

or carnivals. These times usually include live music! Check out specific details by

searing a city and music (example Chicago music).

4th Grade:

Come see our STATE FAIR on May 5th in the gym.

We will open this evening with some patriotic music

we learned as a 4th grade class.

Students will end the school year with a combination

of folk dancing, drumming and music baseball and

basketball.

5th Grade:

Finally we will finish with a Rock Music unit. This is a

continuation of last year’s rock unit (and something we have

been talking about for a few months!)

We will also sing some folk songs and try a few folk dances,

or maybe play some music baseball and basketball.

3rd grade:

We are about to a rhythm composition that students will share

with class. They will have the option to perform it using body

percussion, drums, or other percussion instruments.

Students will also taste a bit of African drumming and

European and American folk dancing. We will also learn a song

in Spanish.

2nd Grade:

On May 6th we will see “The Little Mermaid” musical, put on

by CYT. I am very excited to see this production with the 2nd

grade students!

Folk dancing in circle, line, and alley formations will pop up

for a few lessons.

Students are also doing some drumming the Afro-Cuban style

using simple rhythms and different hand techniques.

We’ll learn a few songs that use half notes (ta-ah) and sing

about spring and being outside.

1st Grade:

Students will decode the rhythms of some well-known

Mother Goose rhymes in preparation for writing more

rhythms and notes next year.

We’ll also read “Little Bunny FooFoo” and play instruments

along with the story.

Folk dancing will also help round out our first grade year. We

will review a few circle dances from last year, and learn some

alley and line dances this year. Hopefully we can take our

dances and voices outside for a day in the sun.

Kindergarten:

For our last few music lessons we will start

looking at actual notation (ta’s and ti-ti’s).

Students will also learn a few folk dances done

in circle formation. Hopefully we will get to

take them outside so we can sing and dance in

the sun!

Our last book will be “Mary wore her Red

Dress” which students will create a descriptive

picture of what they are wearing on that day.

Then we will sing our class book of what we

wore “all day long.”

CURRICULUM

Fitness testing and basketball were great. 5th grade students will be receiving their fitnessgram

reports with their end of the year report cards. The teamwork and games played in basketball by all

levels was great.

To finish this school year we will be going over soccer and baseball skills. Within the baseball unit we

will also be playing versions of kickball.

ACES DAY

ACES Day is scheduled for May 4th this year. It is a national workout day where students across the

nation will be exercising (much like Read Across America). This year Owen will be participating in

friendly competition against other IPSD elementary building in a run/walk. The highest average ¼

mile laps per student completed in a fifteen minute window will win a $500 donation from Dr.

Buchar.

NEWS

Field Day is scheduled for Friday June 3rd. Students will be eating their lunch outside (weather

permitting) and enjoying going through stations that focus on the states. 4th grade classes actually

help to create some of the stations the students will be going through. Also, please bring a water

bottle. There will be jugs of water available to refill bottles.

The above link may assist you in coming up with some work out plans over the summer. Also,

remember to check with the park districts for some great opportunities to be active and to have fun

through the summer months. Swimming is a great work out for the summer months and is totally

fun! Have a great summer and look forward to seeing everyone in August!

Mrs. McHale Mrs. Sassano

Enjoy your summer and Keep on Reading!

During the month of May, the LMC is a busy place. During the first week, we will have our Spring Book

Fair, and on May 11th, we will host our volunteer appreciation event. On Thursday, May 11th, we hope

that Owen volunteers will join us in the LMC for coffee/tea and sweets. Watch backpack mail for your

invitation.

During the first week of June we will be very busy tracking down hundreds (yes, literally) of overdue

books. Your assistance with retrieval of these books allows us to keep checkout open late into the spring,

so your cooperation is valued.

Some important dates that you will want to remember are:

• Tuesday, May 24: Last day for book checkout

• Friday, May 27: All library books due

Here is a recap of book fair dates. As usual, we will be open during the fourth grade State Fair evening

event.

• Monday, May 2 - Set up

• Tuesday, May 3 - Children browse

• Wednesday, May 4 - Children browse

• Thursday, May 5 - Open for sales, also open that evening during the Fourth Grade State Fair

• Friday, May 6 - Open for sales

• Monday, May 9 – Pack it up

We can really use some volunteer help, so try and hold at least one date for us. You’ll find it to be a fun

and rewarding experience.
