    Art ModelsLife Nudes for

    Drawing Painting and Sculpting

In all my years as a student, professional artist, and an instructor, I have never seen apose file, or reference book that is in any way comparable to this volume. I am high-ly recommending this book to all my figure drawing students

    - Michael A. Buffington, university art instructor

he DVD arrived today. Been browsing it and I must say Im impressed. Definitelyworth every penny. Cheers from a happy customer.

    - Cindy Dukino, artist

Images of the human form that come as close as possible to what you would see, ifyou were observing the models directly with your own eyes.

    - Butch Krieger, author, instructor and artist

I think its a great idea and a unique expansion on the basic nude reference books.- Felix Eddy, artist

I believe there is a valuable place for your work and as photographic references go,yours is one of the best Ive seen.

    - Stuart Mark Feldman, year veteran sculptor

he authors are to be congratulated for putting this great resource together. I know Illbe encouraging the art and photomedia students at the college I run a degree programat to buy this book and I hope you do too. A very highly recommended resource.

    - Wayne J. Crosshall, art instructor

he lighting is beautifully simple and reveals physical contours and volumes that Ineed to see to learn from.

    - Joan Wraxall, artist

Your reference books really are wonderful. I like the northern neutral light on the mod-els, it really stresses the subtle forms and makes the painter and sculptors really lookat the figure.

    - Daniel Horne, years experience as a cover artist

    A Second Renaissanceby Butch Krieger

We, the artists of the st Century, live in themost exciting time in the history of art.Beyond a reasonable doubt, we see the dawn of theSecond Renaissance of Representational Art and ris-ing with the New Dawn is a resurgence of tradition-al figure drawing, painting and sculpture. he class-room studios and the marketplace of the s heldprecious little warmth for the human figure in art.During those bleak decades, the art establishmentsuppressed the human figure (unless it was somehowmangled or desecrated) and oppressed those few who

stubbornly refused to abandon the traditional humanfigure to the darkness. But now, that desolate centu-ry has passed and the human figure once again takescenter stage, as it should, in the warm glow of thespotlight.

As the figurative artists of the Second Renaissance,we enjoy many technological advantages unknown toour first Renaissance predecessors. Not the least ofthese advantages is photography. As a visual referencefor figurative artists, photographs provide extensivebenefits.

Photographing a figure model is quite cost effec-tive. You can take scores of photographs of many dif-ferent poses and many variations of each pose withinthe time it would take for just one good rendering ofone pose and position from a life model. he cost ofphotography is minimal especially when comparedto the expense of repeated modeling sessions. In

addition, you keep the photosthereby storing theimage of the model for future use.Human forms in photographs are totally subser-

vient to your own timetable and convenience. hisenables you to make art without having to coordinateyour schedule with your models. Your photographedfigures, moreover, never need to take breaks. heyhold their poses unwaveringly and untiringly forever. If you do not have a pool of people willing to posenude for you, or if you cannot attend organized lifedrawing sessions, these photographs become indis-

pensable. If you choose to work from photographs, you can

take the pictures yourself or obtain them from profes-sional sources such as this book. One advantage ofprofessionally produced photo references is increasedcost effectiveness. It would take many days, cost hun-dreds or thousands of dollars and require finding andhiring many models to produce the images you findin one Live Model volume. Another advantage is thatyou will find a wider variety of poses than you wouldlikely think of yourself along with multiple views ofeach pose.

he use of photographed models is not withoutits gainsayers. he most often cited shortcoming ofphotography is its distortion of tonal contrasts andhues. Improvements in modern photographic tech-nology significantly reduce this problem so that it isno longer the major issue that it once was. Further-

more, the authors of Live Model Books have usedthese improvements to produce images of the humanform that come as close as possible to what you wouldsee, if you were observing the models directly withyour own eyes.

his is not to say that photography has displaced

the use of live models. It has not yet and it never will.here will always be a good purpose for live models, particularly in the training of artists. But, here too,is an application for photographic references suchas this book. hey can act as visual encyclopediashelping you choose poses for your live models. Andbecause a picture is indeed worth a thousand words, you can show your models the position you wantthem to assume, thereby making it easier to directthem.

You can likewise use Live Model Books as ency-clopedic references even if you prefer to take yourown photos. Simply pick out a pose that you likeand show it to your model, and then adjust it toyour own vision. For instance, you may want to usedifferent illumination, such as a trap-door lightingeffect. Or, you may want to see a slight variation in apose. Using visual sources as idea books is especiallyimportant if you plan to market your art and youwant the figure imagery to be unique to your owncreation.

he use of photographic references (particularlythose of the non-pornographic nude figure) will cer-tainly be a part of the Second Renaissance and willlikely precipitate a boom in figure art. he NewDawn has broken and pioneering publishers, such asLive Model Books, are helping to bring the grace ofthe human figure back into the light. It is an ideawhose time has come.

    About the Art i s t s

David J. VanderpoolDavid is married with two sons. One, just out of highschool, has been in the Army National Guard Reservessince he was . he youngest shows a passion formusic and the oldest for arttalents that come fromboth their parents.

David is largely self-taught with some collegeexperience. His earliest memories include sitting ina room and drawing what he saw in front of him.His preferred medium is pencil drawing and hispreferred subjects are portraits and human figures. He enjoys rendering the male form for its strong

shapes and dramatic shadows and the female formfor its beauty and grace. He tells us that one of themost challenging aspects of his art is drawing hands.hey require patience and a good understanding ofanatomy, especially the structure of the numerousbones.

One of his biggest professional challenges, asan artist who sketches the human figure, is gettinggalleries to show his work. hey tell me they love mywork but want to see what else I can do, as if drawingis just a start. David hopes one-day to open a gallery

for pencil artists that features their work and providesa welcoming studio and retail space.

One of the things David said about this projectwas that he enjoyed working with some of the bestmodels I have come across in a long time. Easy tocapture and the poses are perfect to draw. Not thestandard boring poses you find in other modelbooks.

David works as a graphics designer and ad layoutartist for The Bakersfield Californian. One of the topremaining family owned newspapers in the nation. He has won awards from the CNAEA for his adlayout and special projects. His pencil drawings arecurrently offered as prints in Europe and can be seenon his own web site.

Dee OverlyDee Overly studied Art and Film at the University

of oledo and Architectural Design at OwensCommunity College. Clearly, Dee is passionate aboutart, she aspires to create works of art in herlifetime. She also enjoys photography, archery andgolf. She spent ten years designing irrigation systemsfor golf courses and years working with neon glass.

Now that her two children are grown, Dee isable to pursue her art goals more seriously. She wantsher work to constantly show growth, so that meansmuch practice. She tries never to allow a day to go bywithout drawing something.

Dees preferred medium is watercolor with penand ink (several examples can be found in this book)but she also enjoys graphite and pastel. Her preferredsubject matter is figurative drawing and portraits. Shealso enjoys carving and would like to do the humanfigure in wood. She says, with the multiple viewsavailable of a given pose in this project, Im lookingforward to giving -D a try.

One of her biggest challenges as an artist isPutting that first line down on a blank piece ofpaper. Once Im past that, everything seems easier, things start flowing.

About this project she tells us What a wonderfulopportunity. Having multiple views of the same pose

gave me so many possibilities for practice as well asways to compose a finished piece of work. Also, thehuge photos on my computer screen were great towork with. So, Im not just looking forward to thefinished book, but to the disk thats part of the project. Its been downright fun. (hanks Dee!)

Jack WilsonJack is a bit reticent about talking about himself buthe did share a bit of information.

He is married with two kids. During this project,he was attending college as an Art/Art Educationmajor. He enjoys figurative, classical and neoclassicalart as well as Greek mythology and fantasy art. Hisstrongest medium is paint; oil, acrylic, or watercolor.

About this project, Jack told us What I like bestis its versatilityyou can take a model and drop him

or her into any situation that suits you. Or they canstand on their own in a simple figure study.

    Gianluca Poda

Gianluca lives is in Italy and was married during thisproject. He currently works for the government andhas been studying art for three years. He is not onlyartistic but also athletic with an interest in soccer andtennis. He also enjoys modeling military aircraft.

Gianlucas preferred subject is the human figure.I think a woman is the greatest expression of naturesbeauty. he challenge is to draw what I really have inmindthe expressions of the models body (I thinkevery human body speaks to us). I really trust in thelanguage of the human body. His biggest challenge iscapturing that essence and character in a drawing.

About the project, he wrote hey esteemtheir customers and pay attention to any requestsor suggestion. heir pictures are very beautiful andinteresting with lots of variety.

It is a joy to admire with our eyes and paintwith our hands the beauty of nature and the humanbody.

Patrick Keithruly a Renaissance artist at heart, Patrickbegan his art at an early age sculpting anddrawing. He has studied and crafted art, music, sculpture, photography, cinematography andanimation in a desire to develop a variety of skills, interests and techniques.

    Why Ar t Mode l s?

Few subjects challenge and fascinate artists more thanthe nude human figure. Yet very few photographicreferences exist that study the figure in full color, highresolution, and with careful lighting. Our goal was tocreate a reference that does just that. We wanted a rangeof poses from classical to modern photographed in highresolution so the photos on disk could be zoomed infor extreme detail. Do we intend to replace models?Certainly not! But we do hope to be a valuable tool inthe artists toolbox.

For schoolsand professors,Art Modelsprovides asupplement to traditional books- we take many classicsand bring them up to date with contemporary models. For example, Bennett a model with modern bodyshape and style, interprets The Dying Gauland Susanreproduces Venus, Naiad and Diana with Hound (toname a few). Some professors have told us these full

poses may be beyond introductory classes. However, byzooming in on the high resolution photos on disk,ArtModelsalso has a vast array of hands and feet and otherdetails to practice. Finally, with views per pose thedisk offers extensive material for assignments.

For hobbyists, who may have limited access tolife models,Art Modelshas over poses to practice. Some decidedly contemporary poses, such as Jens work(inspired by th century art and icons) or Ximonsdramatic poses, provide variety for everything fromillustration to comics and graphic novels. he artwork

demonstrates what other hobbyists and students havedone from the photos and is meant to be an approachablestarting point for beginning practice.

Professionalswill hopefully find a few new poseideas or inspiration and material that can be used inmodeling or illustrating.Art Modelscan also be used asa workbook to, for example, plan compositions or helpdirect models in the studio.

Virtually every time we showed an artist the bookduring development, they came up with new ways itcould be useful. Since our goal was to provide a trulyuseful reference for artists of all kinds, this was verygratifying.

One important difference this book has over otherreferences is we encourage the use of our photos as thebasis for derivative art. See the copyright page for details. In fact, contributor David Vanderpool already offers hiswork for sale on his web site.

About the lightingPeople who draw or paint know that lighting is criticalto a composition. However, we did not intend thisbook to contain final composed pieces of art. Rather,it is a starting point- with enough uniform light toprovide details in the shadows.

We certainly did not strive to provide lightingcomparable to the Dutch Masters. We felt that to doso would rob the artist of the chance to provide theirown interpretation of the poses. In addition, deepshadows would hide the details needed by -D artistssuch as sculptors. herefore, we encourage you, theartist, to use your own inner eye to turn the rawmaterial presented here into art- complete with yourown vision of lighting.

For reference: most poses are lit with a primarybright light above and to the right of the model with

fill lighting from below and to the left.

Layout and OrganizationWe took over photographs for this project.Obviously, we could not fit large photos in anyreasonably sized and priced book. Instead, we choseto print four views in the book and put the remaining

  • 5/24/2018 Art Models Livro 1

    14

photos on a companion disk. his still resulted in theselection of over photographs.

It is in the nature of photographing from mul-tiple angles that there be some wasted space from cer-tain directions. When designing the book, we tried toarrange the photos so that they were as large as pos-

sible while also providing a consistent organization. For example, we occasionally combined two standingposes on one page. his reduces the number of pagesand therefore the cost of the book while allowing theinclusion of as many poses as possible.

he poses have been given names to make themeasy to remember (lookout, our dry sense of humoroccasionally sneaks into the naming) and they alsohave a name for reference to the files on the compan-ion disk.

We have found that people tend to have favoritemodels and so we organized the chapters by modelwith each one marked by a color-coded tab visiblewith the book closed. By popular request, we alsoincluded a chapter of non-nudes containing variedexpressions and a few costumed poses. o keep page

count and price down, we often printed just one anglefor the expression poses. he remaining views are onthe companion disk.

We like to hear comments and suggestions andwe follow as many as we can. Please write to us.

    - Maureen and Douglas Johnson, @.

Too Sexy? While the models are attractive, we certainly did not intend this book to be inany way prurient. o achieve a more conservative appearance we consideredadding a bit of modesty screening. Tis was impossible for the male modelswithout large obtrusive censoring. For the female models, we did add a littleblurring in the printed book but left the companion disk untouched. Wehope this achieves the proper balance of sensitivity to those who might beuncomfortable with full nudity, for example in a classroom environment, whilealso allowing individual artists to decide what is appropriate through the use of

    the companion disk.

AcknowledgementsWe would especially like to thank the models andartists who contributed with their time and creativityto this project.

    Bennett Harrington

    by Dee Overly

Bennett HarringtonI have always been an artist of many sorts, includ-

ing painting, drawing, singing, acting, writing andcomedy. o turn each of these vocations into sepa-rate and thriving careers is definitely an overall goalthat I continue making strides toward daily.

I have an Associates degree in Visual Arts fromNorthern Essex Community College. his school-ing acquainted me with many new artistic ideas andaffirmed that my goals are to communicate with oth-ers vocally or through visual art. I chose not to con-tinue on to a 4-year art school to pursue acting.

My passion is absolutely to communicate. Few

things are more enjoyable in life than meeting newpeople, conversing with old acquaintances, and basi-cally creating and polishing personal relationships.Who doesnt love gaining new friends?

Modeling is something that I had always wantedto do and something I always found myself doing inmirrors. I basically fell into professional modeling inMarch of 2005 when I submitted my headshot to a

photographer who was looking for male models. Heselected me, which was such a shock, and I ended

up working with him several times. I was able to getsigned to one of Bostons larger modeling agencies inJune, 2005.

his book is the only nude modeling I have everdone. I actually did not realize when I respondedto their model call that it was for nude modeling.I learned that information just before meeting withMaureen and Doug for the first time. I consideredcanceling that preliminary meeting, but decided itwould be a fun thing to try.

Besides working with Maureen and Doug, my

favorite part was coming up with unique and inter-esting poses while on the rotating platform. It wassuch a creative experience and was definitely worththe next days muscle strain.

hank you for showing an interest in our art andthe furthering of your artistic training and apprecia-tion.

    Ximon Dunedain

XimonI am a performance artist, dancer, and fine artist, and the sole proprietor of Icon Alchemy fine artand performance productions. I am also a partnerin the Art-in-Gaming company Owl and Crow, a

founding staff member of the empleCon gamingconvention and a founding member of the AtomicImmersion Collaborative, creators of installationand interactive performance art events. Oh, and Imodel too!

he majority of my modeling is done for localcolleges and universities, as well as local artists groups, although I work with a variety of photographers as

well. My preference is fine art modeling, but I liketo be versatile and open to new ideas.

I frequently create my own costumes formodeling and performing and I love modeling inunusual settings. Modeling allows me to interact

with other artists and feed our mutual creativity ina very direct way.

I loved working on the Live Model Book projectbecause for me, modeling is a way of giving backto the artistic community, helping other artists tomanifest their own creativity, and this book gives somany artists so many creative possibilities.

    Ylana Stafford

Ylana StaffordI have worked as a hostess, bartender, manager andas an assembler, technician, engineer. I am single andhave no children but I have a great extended family.

I have spent my entire life learning and seekingeducation. My varied work history is a direct result ofmy diverse educational experience. I started modelingand acting about years ago. Now I mostly do com-mercial modeling and acting.

I liked the fact that these photos may be used tocreate -dimensional art. I also liked the idea of, in asmall way, experiencing what models did for paint-

ers two hundred years ago. o really hold a pose is noeasy feat.

My passion is to appreciate the beauty that sur-rounds us all. If I am granted an opportunity to con-tribute, I should embrace it.

I feel my look and physique has suffered the pass-ing of time {editors note- we dont think so, look howcute you are!} but a skilled and sincere artist can makebeautiful all things that are natural. hats exciting.

Maybe some day my educational ventures willhave me use the book myself.

    Chanelle & Mary Expressions

Chanelle CamireI have been modeling for two years and prefer highfashion and artsy. I also intend to pursue an actingcareer. I have worked for several years in the restaurantindustry and eventually would like to own my ownfine dining restaurant. I majored in Business at NorthShore Community College but shortly switched todrama. I enjoy yoga, kwando, reading, knitting, danc-ing, and dining.

My father is French and grew up in Massachu-setts. My mother is Korean. hey met while my fatherwas in the service. I am not married and I do not have

any children.Working with the costumes was fun and it would

be great if someone finds something interesting aboutme and uses me for a piece of their work.

    - Chanelle Camire,

Mary dEtremontI attend North Shore Community College and planto further my education at Emerson College, HarvardExtension, and UCLA. I dont have any children nordo I plan to. And no marriage either.

Recently I have gotten involved in New Englandsfilming community. I just finished filming the shortcomedy, American Jesus. My next hopeful project isthe intense drama, A errible Darkness. In the pastI was involved in theatre. I worked on Four By Ivesand he Complete Works of William ShakespeareAbridged. Im currently writing my own screen play.

I have been modeling for about three years. Onthis project I enjoyed the challenge of capturing rawand real emotion on camera. I learned more of myselfand of my passion to perform. I think the best part ofcollaborating on this work is the reaction the artistswill have and how I will be perceived.
