except working as an apprentice with hisfather, John Howard, an architect, forsome hands-on training. This apprenticemethod is how most architects weretrained in pre-modern studios.

Traditional architecture, however, isnot the goal of the younger Howard, whohas begun his own construction companyon a part-time basis, developing tinyhouses.

“They [tiny houses] are popular in theWest and Southwest,” he said of the areawhere he lived for a few years. “Manyare owned by retirees who make the cir-cuit traveling to sites where they can parktheir tiny home and connect their utili-ties.”

“On the other hand,” he said, “someyoung people use the homes to park onthe property of friends and family wherethey can live and share utilities with theirhosts.

“There are not many tiny homedesigners in the Philadelphia area, possi-bly because of the cold long winters inthe Northeast. Many are in California andother parts of the West and Southwest,”he said.

Howard has started a small companycalled Rambler and is building his firsthouse on his parents’ property in MountAiry. As a full-time job, he teaches in anontraditional school for youngsters whoneed help entering the workforce.

His tiny houses are somewherebetween 200 to 400 square feet and theyare good for the environment.

He said his homes have necessities

such as a bathroom, shower, kitchen, loftbedroom and heating and cooling sys-tems.

But the most important thing his hous-es have is mobility.

He said, “Tiny homes are part of thegreen building movement. They are com-pact, efficient homes that offer most ofthe features of a large house without allthe baggage.”

Howard’s house has 120 square feet,which includes a downstairs room, aporch, a kitchen and a bathroom. Upstairsis a sleeping loft at the end of a woodenladder staircase.

Tiny houses vary and the size is differ-ent around the world. Howard’s is justone example of the “tiny house” move-ment, which is not really new. In somecountries, families live in one-room huts,while in others, families have gigantichomes.

Research has found that homes tend togrow with their owner’s prosperity.

Since 1970, the size of the averagenew American home has grown by 50percent. This growth trend is similar inmost Western countries. However, forevery trend there is a counter-trend. In thecase of home size, more and more peopleare choosing to live in small homes.Many downsize while some homeownerstake this trend to a new level, choosing tolive in tiny homes as small as 90 squarefeet, complete with bedrooms, kitchens,bathrooms and living quarters.

In Japan, architects are only sporadi-cally confronted with the country’s tightconstraints. Apollo Architects is a firmthat thrives on tiny houses and hasdesigned and built nearly 20 small homessince establishing itself in 2000.

Arvesund is a Swedish company that

manufactures and produces the hermit’scabin. The dwelling is just one roomwith one single bed and a kitchen. Thecompany has built multiple prototypesin Sweden where visitors can stay andit also ships the homes around theworld. It also produces the special stoveand water heating system in the house,which is built from two joined shippingcontainers. This cabin houses fouroccupants. The designers salvaged theshipping containers and connected themto increase the home’s living area. Oneof the containers houses the home’s liv-ing room, complete with a wood-burn-ing stove.

London-based designer NinaTolstrup designed a compact beachhouse.

At a mere 388 square feet, the tinystructure manages to fit a living anddining area, two bedrooms, a bathroomand kitchen. It is built on a set of galva-nized steel stilts to protect it fromflooding. The exterior is clad in cedarshingles and the interior used softwood.The rear end of the house is steppeddown, making room for a sleeping loftabove. The front features a large win-dow that looks out onto the sea and asmall sitting deck.

In the housing market, theMcMansion is being increasingly bal-anced by the Tiny House. Both, ofcourse, are used by opposite ends of themarket.

The Rise of Tiny Houses

The quirky world you meet in the pho-tographs of Zoe Strauss reveals allmanner of words on walls, pictures ofmen, women and children, lots ofseedy street scenes and many differ-ent details of buildings located in and

out of Philadelphia. They faithfully documentthe appearance of all these human and non-human subjects. Simultaneously, they also inter-pret everything and everybody that occupied thespace in front of the camera Strauss held in herhands whenever she proceeded with lens andfilm.

As expressive artworks, theyshow people and property in themidst of socially and historicallyinduced circumstances. In everycase, they maintain a stubbornidentity with quiet tenacity.Medium thick slices of reality,they are full of truth and free ofvarnished slickness. Their bluffdirectness is neither enhancedwith gold lamé nor have theybeen swabbed with airbrushed retouching.

From Jan. 14 to April 22, the PhiladelphiaMuseum of Art is offering a solo exhibition of150 prints and slides by Strauss. They tell sto-ries and offer insights into states of feeling thathave credibility because they are succinct yetalso sufficiently comprehensive to properlycover the subject at hand. The exhibition wasorganized by Peter Barberie of the museum

staff.In a manner

that has to beseen close upwith your owneyes in order tobe properlyappreciated, theStrauss picturespulsate with agraphic intensi-ty that defiesadequate verbalexplanation.They ask to besearchingly

looked at and reflected upon. Then, they graduallyrespond with insights that might otherwise haveremained quietly unacknowledged, simply lefthidden in plain sight.

Strauss’ career in photography began when shewas given a camera on the occasion of her 30thbirthday. She promptly began making pictureswith it in the immediate neighborhood of herhome in South Philly and hasn’t stopped to thisday. In addition, she has made many more photo-graphs during a range of travels, taken far andwide.

In due course, and entirely withoutformal study in art, she received a PewFellowship Award in 2005. Later,examples of her work were selected forinclusion in the Whitney MuseumBiennial Exhibition of 2006.

For several years Strauss has alsopresented solo offerings of her photo-graphs called “Under I-95.” They wereannual installations hung on the con-crete columns holding up the Interstate

Highway near her home. From this enterprise, shesold signed examples of her work for modest feesbecause she didn’t want to deprive potential col-lectors from acquiring selections of her expressiveoutput if they otherwise couldn’t afford them.

In addition, she began to exhibit regularly andbe represented professionally by the SilversteinGallery in New York City. And now, there is thebig retrospective about to be on view for several

months at the art museum. One of the most uncanny images in the show is

a frontal view of a person’s head covered with awhite mask. Only the eyes appear. All otherdetails are obscured by the blank appearance ofthe mask. In its own peculiar way, the photographis alive with provocative suggestions of how thesubject really looks behind the mask. In addition,one naturally also thinks of the many ways peoplemask themselves and their true character, evenwhen they have nothing on with which to covertheir face and its features.

Two other pictures that touched the core of mybeing included a close-up treatment of the lateSouth Street clothier Benny Krass and a full-fig-ure view of a gray-haired woman, titled“Alzheimer’s.” The humanity given voice in theseprints comes through with subtle compassion andsympathetic tenderness.

Strauss is a very good example of a soundlyself-taught artist who is completely committed toher field. She is also very aware of what certainartists whom she admires, such as MarcelDuchamp, Walker Evans, Anselm Kiefer andDiane Arbus, have contributed to the world ofcontemporary expressive form.

For Strauss, each of her photographs becomesa living part of her ongoing existence. They arereplies to what she confronts in the world of hereveryday comings and goings. Sometimes, thedialogue is active. Other times, it’s veryrestrained. No matter how many of her picturesyou see, each one is a new vision, offering itscontent in a special manner with an integrityentirely its own.

Visitors to the exhibition will find a parade ofreferences that bring the environment of the busyoutside world to the atmosphere inside the artmuseum. The difference between the two settingsis the difference between the hubbub at the inter-section of Broad and Spring Garden streets in thecenter of the city and the quiet space filled withprofound serenity you need for experiencing thejoy and pleasure of contemplating artworks.

And if you think anybody able to use a camerais automatically equipped to make exceptionalpictures, this exhibition will help you change yourmind.
