Art Lesson for 2nd and 3rd Grade Objective: The student will be able to use line and shape to create a self-portrait. The student will be able to show their understanding of fauvism by adding different “wild beast” colors to their self-portrait by coloring or painting. Standards: 1.1.5.D.1, 1.3.5.D.1, 1.3.5.D.3, 1.3.5.D.4, 1.3.5.D.5, 1.3.5.D.2, 1.4.5.A.2, 1.4.5.B.1 Materials Needed: White Paper (any kind) Pencil and eraser Black crayon or black marker Coloring utensils (paint, colored pencils, crayons, markers, etc.) Videos to watch: Day 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s37OoBXkYAc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDB9CTwNG4A Day 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh09gdPq2M8 Time: 40 minutes for 2 days Accommodations/Modifications: Extended time: students do not have to finish the art lesson in 2 40-minute blocks; they have 2 full weeks to complete the lesson at their own pace Assessment checklist: the assessment aspect of the lesson is in a checklist format with questions; the students can use this checklist to ensure they are completing the entire task that was asked of them Written and visual aides: the directions are written out in a step by step format and they are accompanied with visual aides Directions: Day 1: Watch a video about the artist, Henri Matisse. Next, watch the video describing self-portraits. What are some things you notice about Henri Matisse’s paintings of people? Use the Self Portrait Drawing Guide and follow steps 1-8 on any available paper. Use pencil, crayon, or marker in order to follow each step using lines to create your self-portrait. Make sure you fill the page. Day 2: Watch the video reading of the book, “Matisse: The King of Color” by Laurence Anholt. On your self-portrait paper, add begin to add color. Remember to color like Matisse - a wild beast! Use wild colors that you would not normally use. You can use anything to color with such as, markers, crayons, colored pencils, watercolors, paints, etc. Don’t forget to color your background, too.
