Sandy MoffatAs a young art student in the early 1960’s I would often make the journey to Port Setonwith John Bellany. For John of course, PortSeton, Cockenzie and Prestonpans were specialplaces… places where a rich local culture fed

his imagination andprovided thesubject matterfor his paintings. But at the time, few recognisedjust how specialthis culture was.

Times havechanged. Todaythere are fewparts of Scotlandwithout some formof cultural activitygoing on. The localfestivals, large andsmall, that havesprung up all overthe country inrecent years are atestament to anincreasing publicawareness that artand culture canreally make adifference. What art

offers is vitality and spirit, as opposed to cringeand ignorance. All of the arts help us to createa common cause, a shared purpose thatenables human potential to flourish.

The 3 Harbours Arts Festival is a wonderfulexample of this spirit. By drawing on its ownparticular characteristics, historical, geographical, linguistic, we can say that all ofthese together generate the distinctions we callcultural. Although fishing, boat-building andcoal-mining are no longer the mainstay of thelocal economy, each have left unique legaciesof people living and working together and this issomething future generations can look backupon and proudly celebrate. The rediscovery oflocal history confers a new sense identity. The 3 Harbours Arts Festival shows us the richnessand diversity of these identities through thevaried mediums of literature, art and music. TheFestival is a wonderful example of puttingculture to work in the community as a means oftransforming both the environment and the livesof the people. Long may it continue.

The festival celebrates its tenthanniversary this year. We are

blessed by its setting, alongthe wonderfulcoastline ofEast Lothian

with its richheritage, strong

sense of communityand creative spirit. The festival is run entirely byvolunteers and could not havehappened without the hundredsof people who have helped fromthe start in 2006. We would like tothank all of you who havegenerously supported our festival– homeowners, organisations, businesses and individuals. Yourtime, practical support, financialcontributions and words ofencouragement are muchappreciated.

Cockenzie Power Station hasalways been a strong supporterof the festival. The station hashosted popular large-scalemixed media exhibitionsincluding artists of internationalstature such as Sandy Moffat, Richard DeMarco,Calum Colvin, Will Maclean and Wei Luan. Theillumination of the iconic chimneys was a festivalhighlight in 2008 when internationally acclaimedviolinist, Tasmin Little played to the chimneys on ouropening night. We are pleased that Tasmin will bereturning to the festival to bid farewell to thechimneys which will be demolished later this year.Tasmin’s farewell concert will be in the beautifulsurroundings of Chalmers Church in Port Seton.

We hope you enjoy our photographic record ofspecial memories over the years included in thebrochure supplement. It has been an amazingjourney with an abundance of creativity inunusual places.

We look forward to seeing you again this year.

festival highlights 2015A classical theme to celebrate our 10thAnniversary!

Tasmin Little has firmly established herself as one of today’sleading international violinists. She has performed on everycontinent, in some of the most prestigious venues of theworld, including Carnegie Hall, Musikverein,Concertgebouw, Philharmonie Berlin, ViennaKonzerthaus, South Bank Centre, Barbican Centre andRoyal Albert Hall, Lincoln Center and Suntory Hall.

Her multi-award winning and varied career encompassesinternational concerto and recital performances, masterclasses, workshops and community outreachwork. Tasmin’s discography and performance schedulereflect her wide-ranging repertoire and she has givennumerous World Premiere performances includingconcerti by Willem Jeths, Robin de Raaf, Stuart MacRae,Robert Saxton and Dominic Muldowney.

Her recording of the Britten Concerto with EdwardGardner and the BBC Philharmonic, released in May2013, received lavish critical praise – “one of the finest(versions) committed to disc”, “a rapturous disc”, “anincandescent commitment to the work”, “her virtuosityis breathtaking”.

In 2008 Tasmin launched her project, The Naked Violin, aimed atbreaking down barriers to classical music by releasing a free CD fordownload on her website, and performing within communitieswhere music is rarely heard. Tasmin visited the 3 Harbours Arts Festivalthat year, playing to the chimneys as well as performing for youngEast Lothian musicians in a teepee on the Power Station site.

Tasmin returns to the festival with her Naked Violin Presentationincluding Bach Chaconne and Ysaye Ballade in her programme. Sheplays a 1757 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin and the concert willbe held in Chalmers Memorial Church.

We are delighted that The Pop-Up Opera Roadshow from ScottishOpera brings three pop-up operas to Port Seton Harbour. ‘A Little Bitof Carmen’ and ‘A Little Bit of Barber’ are cleverly re-written versionsof the full operas, while Puffy MacPuffer & The Crabbit Canals hasbeen specifically created for 5 to 8 year olds. Performed by two

singers, storyteller and instrumentalists, each show gives afantastic introduction to

opera. These are freeperformances (bookingrecommended) staged inScottish Opera’s TheatreRoyal Community Trailer;a specially convertedscenery truck that hasbeen designed to reflectthe interior of the TheatreRoyal in Glasgow.

‘Mill Girls’ On Tour is aunique production ofpoetry, theatre andmusic. It is apoignant tribute tothe working women, known as ‘the MillGirls’ – from factory

It portrays and celebrates the lives of thousands ofwomen who worked in Paisley’s great thread mills inthe 19th and 20th Centuries and also the strength oftheir friendships. They were feisty and determined, brave and hardworking – they built a town.

A show that is a tribute to the lives of all workingwomen and a lifestyle that should not beforgotten: comic and tragic, defiant and loving…and loved by all who have seen it.

The Mill Girls On Tour cast is an exciting blend of

The Domestics returnto the YardA creative happening

After a fun 2014 – including the Edinburgh Festivaland the Hogmanay celebrations at the Tron Kirk inEdinburgh, local band The Domestics return to oneof the most unusual venues around – East Lothiansalvage institution Samuel Burns & Sons inPrestonpans. They bring their unique mix of eclecticalt-country music and the gig promises to be anexciting blend of live music, poetry, group paintingand more pre loved domestic appliances than hasever been seen at a live cultural event. You caneven purchase one on the day to take home!

Musically you can expect new original Domesticssongs mixed with lovingly ‘domesticated’ covers ofclassic songs. John Lindsay – the ‘Mad Laird ofMorvern’ will read extracts of poetry inspired by thelocal area. Meanwhile, visual artist Laura Youngreturns to create some amazing art throughout theperformance that you and the kids can join in with.

Search ‘The Domestics’ on Facebook for more infoon the gig and ‘Samburns Yard’ for details of thevenue. Not to be missed!
