We were treated to greatTraditional Music by the MissionGold Jazz Band at our JulySession. As some of you mayknow, their leader (John Soulis)and his family have been myfriends since childhood. John’sUncle (Jack Blue) and my Dad (“Duke”Lockwood) were musicians and played inseveral bands together. John’s Dad was anOakland fireman. He and his family built acabin in Twain Harte. Our family spent twoweeks every year in the 50s at the Soulis Cabinin Twain Harte. This is undoubtedly the reasonI now live, with Kerry, in the Sierra Mountains.

Next month is Dancer’s Month for sure. Our guest band is the Art Bregante Orchestra.Great tunes from the 40s, 50s and music of alltypes for you dancers. Be sure to shine yourdancing shoes and put this date on your calendar.

I joined the SJDJS some time in 1981 or82. At that time, Vince Marino broadcastedDixieland Jazz every Sunday from 9 untilnoon as I recall. You could listen to themusic on KUOP FM while driving to theSession. Many music students attended oursessions to get credit for band and musicappreciation classes. It was like a blast fromthe past this July. Aaron and Deloresattended our Session. They were there togather information for a paper they werewriting for their music appreciation courseat Delta College. We hope they will return.Perhaps, through their instructor, we willfind other students attending in the nearfuture.

on your calendar. You won’t be sorry. Art’smusic suits the young folks, and the verysame music suits the not-so-young folks.(Think smooth jitterbugs.) It is all in theexecution. I just hope they don’t play theold “Bunny Hop.” I get out of breath justtyping the words.

Did you know that Art Bregante donateshis wonderful band for our pleasure? Givehim your thanks on August 4th.

Interesting fact; five of the band mem-bers have served on our Board of Directors.

HEARD BETWEEN SETSBy Billie Ricker

Let’s give a handto Marlena & DaveTygett Ifor puttingup the patriotic decorations. And the tableclothes definitely added a touch of class.

Lucky me. I got to hear Louisiana FairyTale twice. Once, with Gene Mondro, &Dominic Ruggieri on reeds, and LeeMonthei, Frank Lindskoog, LarryTyrell, Jan Buhlert, Bill Sharp, & SteveLee filling out the jam. Then I heard itagain in the last set, with a vocal. No, notDick Lockwood, I think it was EarlScheelar vocalizing.

Congratulations to Sharon & JohnSoulis. They were “celebrating” their wed-ding anniversary at our session. He sched-uled this gig on their anniversary, andSharon let him get away with it. See herphoto on pg two.

Lorraine Ladouceur and friend Con-nie were enjoying the music. They haveknown each other since Lorraine was in8th grade. Lorraine has been absent withleave. Medical excuses are about all weaccept here. But she looks great, and plansto stay healthy forever. Sounds good to me!

Bev Romans moved to Ezie Ave.That’s probably as close to Easy Street asshe is ever gonna get! But I hope her life is“Ezie” there.

Here is a nice quote from GeneMondro. When I asked him if he has beenhaving a wonderful time, he said, “As won-derful as time will allow.” No wonder Vir-ginia Wiens always wears a smile! That isa nice positive attitude.

Here is a picture of Irene Stolberg, herAunt Marion, and friend Gerda dancing

I have some very sad news to tell you.Arline Moore, one of the most courageouswomen I have ever known, or ever willknow, has lost her valiant battle with bonecancer. Arline & Vic were charter membersof SJDJS, and were faithful attendees when-ever possible. Out condolences to Vic.

Alice Peters passed away in June. Shewas a lovely lady who had many friends atSJDJS. She has been missed for severalyears, as ill health kept her away from themusic she enjoyed.

And finally, how very sad that HalNeedham is no longer with us. He passedaway, to join his beloved wife, Joan, whomhe missed so much. I know the members ofhis band, Black Tuesday, are devastated.

Gadzooks - -a nonsense termof incredibility, used to describewhat Robinwould say to

Batman to describe the no-nonsensesounds of Mission Gold as the July guestband. Based on their performance, theyneed to change their name to MissionPlatinum. Being highly popular, MissionGold will return in December.

Both gold and platinum notes filledthe air from the jammers as well, as moreand more qualified musicians appeared tofill both the main stage and the room inthe poolside lounge area.

In July we made a special effort tobring down the volume of the jammingmusicians by announcing to them thatthey needed to attempt to play as thoughthey were playing just ambiance music ina church. It really worked well, eventhough there were a couple who reallystruggled with the notion. Most went withthe play-softer notion, and it soundedgreat!!! No one got hurt in the process. No medical assistance was needed.

Next month is basically what onemight consider to be dance month. InAugust the august Art Bregante Orchestrawill tune up and play tunes of days-gone-by. Bregante plays "glide-across-thefloor" music of the big band era, whichincludes the melodious vocal stylings ofGeri Eckert.
