Course Description

Catalogue Description: ARTH 100 explores the nature of art in various aesthetic, formal, and psychological dimensions, involving analysis of art objects for understanding, enjoyment, and life enhancement.

Prerequisites There are no course prerequisites for Art History 100. Check with the instructor if you have

concerns about the course or your academic experience. Registration and Overflow This course tends to fill up very fast. You are encouraged to register early. Prof. Taylor is

Course Requirements Textbooks: Note: textbooks should be ordered and received prior to the first day of class. They are

available at the SDSU Bookstore, among other booksellers. Note 2: Three resources are listed for this course, two of which are books. They are bundled

under the following ISBN number (see especially the SDSU Bookstore for the bundle); or you may seek the three textbook resources out separately, as per below.

Note 3: Note that resources #1-2, below, are required; and book #3 is recommended. The

“bundle” contains all three resources together as one package. Bundle containing all three of the textbook resources: 9780205877096 (ISBN-13); or

0205877095 (ISBN-10). The SDSU Bookstore will carry the bundle while supplies last. If you elect to purchase the bundle you do not need any other text.

#1. The required textbook for the course is: Prebles' Artforms Patrick Frank with Sarah Preble Tenth edition Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2010. ISBN# 0205797539 (Do not use other editions of this text.)

William Strunk, sometimes listed with coauthor White Note: Any recent edition of this text is fine. The SDSU Briggs library carries a reference

copy; and it is included in the bundle listed above.

Class Attendance: Class attendance is required.

� You are expected to login to the course at least every other day. � You must post regularly to the course Discussion. � Students must be able to take quizzes and exams on the scheduled dates. These

are each made available for one pre-designated 24-hour period. � Excused absences and makeup work will be given at the instructor’s discretion

only. � All exams and quizzes are online--no proctor is needed.

Technical Requirements & Issues: Computer Access and Desire2Learn

The computer should be in good working order and the modem should not be less than 28k. You will need a current version of an internet “browser” (for example, “Internet Explorer” 8.0) and operating system (Windows 98 or MacOs 7.1 or greater). Firefox generally works best with D2L. Higher speed connections may be helpful. You will need to view images and video, print documents, and you will need a working microphone. Familiarize yourself with current “Technical Requirements,” “Student Guides,” and “D2L 101” in Desire2Learn.

Evaluation

Your final grade will involve the following: 1. The course Discussion 2. Quizzes 3. Term paper 4. A midterm and a final exam 5. Attendance (as above) and participation

SD Board of Regents and SDSU Gen Ed Requirements ARTH 100 satisfies General Education Requirements set out by the SD Board of Regents: SGE: This course fulfills the System General Education Core (SGE or Gen Ed) for the Baccalaureate Degree, System Goal #4, Gen Ed: Humanities and Arts. “Students will understand the diversity and complexity of the human experience through study of the arts and humanities.” IGR: This course fulfills the Institutional Graduation Requirement (IGR), System Goal #3, Social Responsibility / Cultural and Aesthetic Awareness. “Students will demonstrate cultural and aesthetic awareness to foster individual responsibility and creativity.” A Note on This Sample Syllabus This is only a sample syllabus. The actual syllabus with Class Schedule for spring 2012 will be available to registered students in D2L beginning the first day of class. Please look for that updated syllabus on Desire2Learn, which will replace this one. See you then! A Note on Preparing for the Course Our course begins on the first day of classes as scheduled at SDSU. There are no assignments before that time. Access to D2L begins then. The one thing you must do before that time is to find the textbooks/materials so that you have them in hand by the first day of class.
