Art Appreciation 1301 On-Line Course Syllabus

ARTS 1301 Art Appreciation

If after the first day of class the course is not accessible or there is trouble logging in,
click on the Help link on the login page at the bottom of all Canvas pages. Once you
are in and you are still having trouble, go to the green Help link in Canvas. If you
need help learning how to make Canvas work, go to the Canvas Community tab to
see if you can find help to your problem (s). Before submitting a help ticket try
searching the Canvas Guides for help at the base of Canvas Homepage. The request

Our text book is ArtForms, Frank, 10th
Edition 978-0-205-79753-0 by Prebles. You can
use used books or old editions but the pages and information will vary making reading
more difficult. Textbooks are available at the Midland College Bookstore (432/685-4545)
or online at www.midlandcollegebookstore.com. You can order a digital e-text by going

CANVAS LOG-IN
Go to the Midland College Homepage and click on https://midland.instructure.com.
Login instructions for students can also be found by going to www.midland.edu/canvas .
Students have been enrolled in the Canvas Student Orientation course and can begin the
course at any time after the first day of classes. YOU MUST log in by the third day of the
course in order to keep from getting dropped. You will be required to take a Pre-Test
before the end of the first week!

Your password: MC student ID number, no dashes.
VCT Log in: https://midland.instructure.com
Username: your full email address on record with your VCT college.
Password: your VCT Student ID (This is the student ID number that you use at your
VCT college.)

and she will respond as quickly as possible. Do not use the “Ask Your Instructor a Question”
link…just use the email address. Do not use the Canvas email system. Email her at the above
address. Do not email assignments or any other course material.
When in Canvas, Click on the Settings and View Settings links to edit your personal settings.

***You will be tested with a Pre-Test on the following ASSIGNMENTS and EXAMS material found in Modules before you can begin your first Assignment! You will also
need to read the How to Submit link in Modules. This Pre-Test is due the first week of classes!***
ASSIGNMENTS
Our course consists totally of reading your book, visiting web sites, completing written
Assignments and taking online exams. Except for the Final Exam which is a self-
appointed field trip to a real Museum, the course is entirely online.
When you get into our course, you will see a Module tab on your left. Your
Assignments will be found here with due dates. The Assignments are required
reading and writing submitted through Canvas the day you submit your Exam (by
11:59 pm on the due date) so I can review both at the same time. You can submit
Assignments and Exams as early as you like but you cannot miss the deadline
without receiving penalty points or a zero. Do not email assignments.
Late, missing, or incomplete Assignments reduce the Exam grades to 50
regardless of what you might have made on the exam otherwise. After the
Assignment is submitted, check to make sure a “Paper” icon is seen; if not email
me ASAP.
You get 10 points added on to your exam grade (given in the essay question) for
the completed Assignments. We must have original, written material from each
student who passes the course. You will not get another 10 points added to your
average for your assignments at the end of the course.
For your Assignments, you will create a Word Document (Works does not work)
and fill in the answers in that document with or without stating the questions as
long as I can understand your answers. Save the document somewhere safe such
as in your Documents on your computer and submit it as instructed in the "How to
Submit" link when it is fully complete. All questions must be answered and extra
points will be taken if essay questions are not answered fully.
Each of the assignments covers about 4-6 Chapters of reading and about 6 - 10 pages of
written assignments from our textbook in preparation for the exam.
Due dates In the Fall and Spring are about every 10 days (some even happen on
holidays…sorry!). In the Summer deadlines are about every 5 days and around every 3
days Interim. There are no good excuses for not submitting assignments; zeros are
recorded when the due date is passed. However if a problem arises it is always better to
let me know the situation rather than to ignore a due date.
DO NOT ASK for an “Extension” for Assignments or Exams. I cannot keep the
electronic Grade Book open waiting for students to submit late work.
EXAMS:
The Textbook and Assignments may be used while taking the Exams; therefore, multiple
attempts at an exam will not be an option (except for the Pre-Test). Do not click on the exam
until you are ready with book and assignment ready. Close all other Browsers and do not
leave the exam for any reason. If your exam freezes, contact me immediately.
You can submit Exams as early as you like, but they might not be graded until due date.
Exams are removed on the due date. Late Exams will receive a zero regardless of the excuses
unless you have received special permission from me BEFORE the due date.
YOUR GRADES
The final grade is worth 100% of an average of the Exams including the Final
Exam. This includes the “up to” 10 points you will get onto your exams for the
assignments.
It is the student’s responsibility to check to make sure the registrar has posted a
grade and/or has forwarded VCT host schools a grade. VCT students must check
with their host schools to be sure the grade transferred from MC to your school.
Do not ask Ms. Holland to send to you or average grades.
Ignore the class average as some students do not finish the course.
In the Canvas Grade book, the "total" is a running total based only on the
assignments for which have been graded; it does not include ungraded work or
work not submitted. To see a cumulative grade average un-check the "Calculate
based only on graded assignments" option with the personal grade book
EVALUATION OF STUDENTS
90 to 100 – A
80 to 89 - B
70 to 79 - C
60 to 69 - D
Below 60 - F
An Incomplete will be given only in extreme circumstances and must be finished
before the next term begins. It also must be arranged before the last four weeks of the
course. I am not allowed to give a W or to withdraw students from the course.
PLAGIARISM
There is no excuse in copying or stealing someone else’s work. An F will be received by
both parties when plagiarism is confirmed. It may take research (which is a pain) to
determine plagiarism, so grades may be dropped to an F when it is confirmed anytime
during the semester. Read the policy on plagiarism in the Midland College’s Student
Handbook. BE FIRM: DON’T LET ANYONE COPY OR USE YOUR MATERIAL.
The following is material is required by Midland College to be posted. You will not
be tested on this material but it should be read to know what you will learn.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A general education course open to all students. This course includes design principles
from the layman’s point of view and critical evaluation of selected works of painting,
sculpture, architecture, and industrial design and their importance to choices and values
in everyday life.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Students successfully completing ARTS 1301 will be able to:
1. Recognize the functions and purposes of the visual arts in the everyday world,
in one’s own life and in the life of people around the world;
2. Write and speak about a work of art using appropriate art terminology;
3. Research and present a written analysis integrating and synthesizing sources to
explain an art work's aesthetic and historical significance, its role as a
transmitter of cultural values, and its role in the student’s emotional and
intellectual life;
4. Examine the functions and purposes of each art medium, including drawing,
painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and architecture;
5. Identify the medium of a work of art and understand how each medium is
distinguishable from another;
6. Identify major art movements and artists associated with those movements
from the prehistoric time period to the present;
7. Identify the key stylistic features and historical contexts of art.
8. Work effectively in teams.
9. Demonstrate the ability to explore global/cultural diversity in art;
10. Demonstrate social responsibility by attending an art exhibition.
CORE OBJECTIVES:
In accordance with recommendations from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating
Board, this Creative Arts course will address the following core objectives:
● Critical Thinking— creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and
synthesis of information.
● Communication Skills—including effective written, oral, and visual communication.
● Teamwork—including the ability to consider different points of view and to work
effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal.
● Social Responsibility—including intercultural competence, knowledge of civic
responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global
communities.
INSTRUCTOR
Your instructor is Ms. Dana Holland. She received her BA in Art from Southern Methodist University and
a Masters of Fine Arts from Texas State University. She has taught English, Art History, and Art
Appreciation at Midland College. She has also taught Art Education, Humanities, English and Fine Arts
at Texas State University, Cultural Foundations at St. Edward’s University, and English at UTPB. Dana

ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES Students should contact the registrar’s office in the case of any administrative issues,
tuition returns, withdrawal for non-payment, or student withdrawals. Ms. Holland has no
control over what occurs in the registrar’s office.
DISABILITY STATEMENT
Midland College provides services for students with disabilities through Student
Services. In order to receive accommodations, students must place documentation on file
with the Counselor/Disability Specialist. Students with disabilities should notify Midland
College prior to the beginning of each semester. Student Services will provide each
student with a letter outlining any reasonable accommodations. The student must e-mail
or present the letter to the instructor at the beginning of the semester.
