L FINE ART A LEVELStudying Fine Art A Level will equip you with skills across a range of disciplines. Mostly studio and practical based, you will develop your abilities of observation and analysis, sensitivity, skill, personal expression and imagination.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?· Communication skills, especially the
ability to communicate concepts
and feelings
· How to record from direct observation
and personal experience
· The ability and confidence to
experiment, be innovative, intuitive
and imaginative

used in art and design

WHERE WILL THIS COURSE TAKE ME?Students taking A Level Fine Art can
expect to have their intellectual, creative,
imaginative and intuitive capabilities
developed throughout their course.
As a result, they are prepared for
progression on to a wide range of
creative undergraduate degrees
such as Architecture, Fine Art, Visual
Communication, Photography, Product
Design, Fashion Design, Advertising,
Interior Design and Illustration.
Fine Art can also be followed by those

up a practical subject to compliment

PHOTOGRAPHY A LEVELDuring this A Level you will develop practical photography skills, techniques and processes. This includes composition, depth of field and movement, and the appropriate use of the camera, lenses, filters and lighting. This is a useful subject for further study in arts or design fields.

objects or from the natural world

WHERE WILL THIS COURSE TAKE ME?Students studying Photography at
A Level will learn to explore elements
of visual language, line, form, colour,
pattern and texture in the context of
Photography; to respond to an issue,
theme, concept or idea or work to a brief;
develop an appreciation of viewpoint,
composition, depth of field and
movement; time-based, through such
techniques as sequence or ‘frozen
moment’; the appropriate use of the
camera, film, lenses, filters and lighting
and gain an understanding of techniques
related to the developing and printing
of photographic images, presentation
and layout.
HISTORY OF ART A LEVELHistory of Art A Level explores aspects of Western art and architecture. It will enable you to achieve an appreciation of significant themes from classical Greece to the end of the twentieth century. This course is ideal for further study in arts or architecture fields.

Whatever creative area you want to focus on you can build this into your Foundation. When you join Bellerbys, we will discuss with you what you are hoping to study at university.
Don’t worry if you don’t yet know. You’ll be able
to look through a number of portfolios from our
previous students, across a range of specialisms:
fashion, visual communication, illustration,
photography, interior design, architecture, painting/
fine art, games development – so that you can see
examples of the type of work you can do.
After you have developed basic skills in drawing,
painting, medium handling and design, you will

N As an art student you will begin to develop a portfolio of work that demonstrates your passion, skills and inspiration. We will help you create a portfolio that will impress universities and showcase a range of techniques. Outside of lessons, we also offer clubs and lectures that help you develop and give you the skills you need for your chosen degree.

GUEST LECTURES AND CLUBSStructured enrichment activities encourage you to
engage in the artistic world outside of the studio.
Regular guest lectures at the College offer a great
opportunity for you to write about or present what
you have learnt back in class. Or you can participate
in ARTiculation, a national competition popular
amongst our students who are looking to improve
their research and presentation skills. You can explore
anything from film and sculpture to movement,
painting and artists – it’s up to you.
Other clubs you can get involved with include:
Puppet Making, Art Club, Dance Academy and
Creative Coding Club. These are a great way to
develop skills ready for university as you learn
how to present and critique your work and discuss
creative projects with your classmates.

TESS STEWART
WENDY PYE Wendy has an M.A. in Photographic Arts from UAL: London College of Communication and regularly exhibits her visual arts projects. Her work has been seen at the annual Fresh Faced and Wide Eyed exhibition at the Photographers Gallery in London and in a variety of photographic magazines and journals.
Wendy has 25 years’ experience working
commercially within the photographic
industry and was the first in-house
photographer for the Big Issue magazine
in the 1990s. Also with experience in the
online industry, Wendy enjoys using
video for her professional and personal
creative projects. She has previously
completed moving image projects for
organisations including the English
National Opera.
Wendy brings this varied experience to
her teaching and enjoys encouraging
mixed media projects and collaboration
across subjects.
TESS STEWARTTess has a B.A. in Fine Art from Coventry University, where she specialised in sculpture and installation. She also gained an M.A. in Photography from University of Brighton. Prior to completing her Master’s Degree, Tess’ early photography experience included weddings, portraits, editorial and events.
Tess has been exhibiting her work
professionally for 16 years and has
had projects displayed both locally and
nationally. She is inspired to produce
images that explore vivid colour and
the diversity of natural light. Tess’ latest
project explored capturing the delicate
shadow of a garment that holds
sentimental value. Studies of first
clothing, exploring the detail and texture
of the fabric using a traditional dark
room technique, The Photogram.
As a teacher, Tess enjoys sharing her skills
with her students and seeing them utilise
new techniques in their artwork.

JULIE MCDERMOTT Julie is a painter and art and design tutor with over 15 years’ teaching experience at Higher and Further Education-level. She studied Fine Art at Northumbria University, and then relocated to Brighton where she established an artists group studio to continue her painting.
Her paintings experiment with scale
and miniature theatrical worlds and more
recently focus on colour and abstraction.
She has exhibited in the UK and France,
including exhibitions such as the Hunting
Art Prize, and the Discerning Eye where
she received the Meynal Fenton award
for painting.
Julie graduated with a PGCE from the
University of Brighton in 2010 and
teaches Art and Design Foundation,
Digital Arts and Fine Art A Level at
Bellerbys Brighton.

DAGMARA RUDKINDagmara, born in Poland, is a painter, illustrator, animator, puppet and prop maker, and a tutor of art and design with over 17 years’ teaching experience.
She studied fine art painting and
glass design at the University of
Wolverhampton and completed a
PGCE in Art and Design at the University
of Brighton. More recently she gained an
M.A. in Sequential Design and Illustration.
Dagmara has a studio as part of
Phoenix Brighton, the largest artist-led
arts organisation in the South East of
England. As part of an artists collective
group, Fabula Collective, she is currently
an artist in residence at Hove Museum
and Art Gallery. Previous illustration
projects include poetry book covers
and a project for the Women’s Literature
Symposium at the University of Brighton.

DAVID NIXWith a Fine Art degree from the University of Reading, David is now a painter, designer, photographer and teacher. He has professional experience working with interior designer Sarah Tisdall creating trompe l’oeil, carpets and designing and building furniture. He has also worked as a photographer, model-maker and exhibition designer for the Winchester City Archaeology Office.
David regularly exhibits with the Society
of Graphic Fine Art and enjoys using
salt prints to produce his photography.
His recent projects explore approaches in
response to the digital age, for example
designing and building pinhole cameras
that use sheet film in various sizes.
David has long teaching experience,
starting at Greylands College on the Isle
of Wight, and he has been at Bellerbys
College since 1986.

JULIAN VILARRUBI Julian is the module leader for Contextual Studies, teaches life drawing and art studies and runs a weekly enrichment club. Julian has a B.A. in Fine Arts from the Newcastle University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Painting from the Royal Academy Schools.
Alongside teaching, Julian is a practicing
artist. Since 1987 he has held seven
one-man exhibitions in Yorkshire, Sussex,
Cumbria, London and Spain. Julian has
participated in some forty public and
private group exhibitions including
numerous festivals, the Painters and
Stainers Exhibition and the Discerning
Eye. Awards include the Hatton Gallery
Award and the Celia Walker Prize.
More recently, Julian enjoys life drawing
and also using an iPad to experiment with
drawing and painting.

ALIX DREILINGAlix graduated with an MSc in Educational Leadership from University of Leicester in 2016. She also has a BA (Hons) in Theatre Design from UAL: Central Saint Martins, graduating in 2000. Alix is a multi-disciplined artist with fifteen years commercial and creative experience, and is currently Head of Enrichment at Bellerbys College Brighton.
Alix teaches post-compulsory level
Art and Design subjects including
A Level Photography, and works
extensively on the Art and Design
Foundation Programme.
As well as working as a costume and stage
designer for MTV and Brighton Fringe
Festival, Alix has designed and produced
over 50 works of art for the world’s largest
international public art event - Cowparade
- and later Wild In Art and an extensive
range of artwork and graphic design for
the music industry.
