ART AND DESIGN PROGRAMMES
CAMPUS LOCATIONSLONDON, OXFORD AND BOURNEMOUTH
kingseducation.com
At Kings, we believe that art is fundamental to what it is to be human. We support students as they engage in active dialogue with the artistic culture (or cultures) they inhabit, extending awareness of their responses and those of others, and helping them to express their own ideas in artistic work which reflects their experience.
We value all students’ ideas and aim to create a reflective and questioning environment in the art studio. Students are encouraged to share and articulate their observations and experiences, enabling them to develop and express increasingly independent and confident personal responses. We open the art studio as far as possible to the wider artistic world, offering many opportunities, on many levels, for students to become stimulated, curious and engaged in art.

1. Expert teaching and small classes
Our art and design programmes benefit from expert teaching
staff, who are experienced in, and passionate about, their
field. All are specialist in teaching international students.
(See page 16)
Small classes are a further feature of Kings programmes.
We consider them essential for creating the personalised
and supportive learning environment which leads to
further academic success in the arts.
“The teachers at Kings are really nice and helpful. It is
really good to have maybe some higher level of personal
connections with teachers, which most of the big
Foundation schools don’t provide. They always give
you new ideas and broaden your mind.”
Ya Lu Huang (Elise), now studying Fashion Management
at the London College of Fashion
“The fact that our teachers are artists, not just teachers,
I think is really great.”
Yurie Abe from Japan, studied the Art Foundation
programme at Kings Oxford
3. Flexible study options
At Kings, we do not have a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Our programmes are flexible enough to allow each student to follow
a personalised study path which best suits their intended field of further study and their level of experience. Our range of
courses means that we can cater for all — even those who have never formally studied art and design.
Our current art and design programmes include the newly introduced Art and Design Preparation Programme, and the
specialist Art Foundation course. Art and design options are also available within both the A-level and Advanced Level
Foundation. Full course details can be found from pages 17 to 21.

Why did you choose a Kings course?
“The college has a very good reputation
and, in addition, Oxford seemed like a
good place to start this ‘grown up’ journey.
It has a nice student community and an
amazing mixture of cultures which made
it easier to improve my English.”
How does Kings help students achieve
their goals?
“Apart from the vast amounts of attention
that students receive from the tutors
there is an amazing stream of inspiration
coming from the staff. I’ve always been
fascinated by the amount of care they put
into relationships and their involvement
with students’ lives including their
successes and difficulties.”
What makes studying at Kings so good?
“I loved the fact that groups were really
small, hence every student could get
more attention. I personally learnt how to
listen carefully and on the whole create an
interesting, balanced discussion.”
What do you like about life in the UK?
“Culture and Art. Endless resources
of inspiration, history, breath-taking
architecture and ability to mix with
people of different ages and cultural
backgrounds. I enjoyed doing internships
where I could meet and communicate
with professional people and learn a lot
from them!”
What are your plans for the future?
“I am planning to develop my skills as
much as possible to become really good
at designing and creating. After my
graduation I would love to stay in the UK
to get a good taste of working in the fast-
moving fashion industry. I am in love with
this country and want to become a part of
its creative life.”
How would you describe your Kings
experience to a friend?
“I had a really great time with some hard
moments that let me enjoy the cool side
of student life without letting me forget
that the way to my future is actually a very
serious business!”
How did the teaching and support at
Kings help you to succeed at university?
“Getting into a habit of working hard, being
more serious and responsible about my
future and doing it for myself is one of
the most crucial lessons I learnt. Tutors
at Kings made it clear from the first days
that we’re not there to please them but to
achieve something that we’re aiming for.”
Kristina Kurkina took her Foundation at Kings. She went on to study a BA (Hons) degree in Fashion at Kingston University. She talks about her journey to success with Kings.
Mariana Peloso do Nascimento studied art as part of the Advanced Level Foundation at Kings. She is now studying Film Production at the University for the Creative Arts.
How are you enjoying life at university?
“I have fallen for my university and I am
enjoying it very much. It is different from
what I had expected but a good different
and it has been a great experience.”
What does your course involve, and what
aspect are you enjoying most?
“It is a very intense course in terms of the
amount of work and you are expected to
do a lot on your own outside of the classes.
Each unit consists of 200 hours including
classes, individual studies/work and
workshops. I am learning a lot and I like
how we are encouraged to try a bit of
each aspect of filmmaking so we can
make a good decision when we specialise
next year.”
Are there particular things which you
did on your Foundation course that have
proved useful for your current studies?
“The presentation and essays that we had
to do have helped me a lot to be able to
complete my course work. Also, the art
lessons taught me a lot about the creative
process which has been very helpful.”
How would you summarise your
experience at Kings Oxford?
“I think it was the step I needed to get used
to how things work in the UK. It was the
ideal experience and place to help me
acclimatize with the new environment
and way of learning.”

Yuri Abe from Japan talks about her experience studying the Art Foundation course at Kings Oxford, and how it has enriched her creative practice.
Were you studying art at school in Japan
and is it different studying art here?
Yes, and yes it is. In my country they always
focus on the final piece but here, although
the final piece is important, they also focus
on the experiment, the process, what we
do to get to the final piece. Because in my
country they didn’t really focus on the
process, we didn’t have to produce sheets
for the research we did. Here we have to
show everything — so it’s kind of different,
but I think I prefer the British style because
in my country my teachers didn’t really
give us advice on how to develop.
I did gain some skills in Japan, but I’ve
learnt more here.
Are there specific skills you’ve learnt in an
art sense?
For me, I think I’ve learnt how to record
things and how to present it, and by doing
that, after finishing my projects I can look
back and do evaluation. That’s really
beneficial for me in order to make better
things in the next project.
Which project have you enjoyed most?
There’s a specific project I enjoyed and it
was about transformation. I enjoyed that
a lot because I’m interested in calligraphy
and typography and I did that in my
project. It’s my favourite area.

Nick Franklin Art teacher at Kings London
Abi Kremer Art teacher at Kings Bournemouth
“I have been working as a part-time
Art Teacher at Kings London since
2012. Before this I taught a variety of art
disciplines for The Open College of the
Arts and was also an English Language
teacher based in Greece.
“I studied Fine Art painting at Brighton
University, but have also worked in a wide
range of 3D mediums and techniques.
I am experienced in printmaking,
photography and Photoshop, and have an
extensive knowledge of art history and
contemporary art practices.”
“I started at Kings in September 2013
and this year my role has grown to
include GCSE Art as well as A level,
University Foundation Art and the Trinity
Arts Award. Prior to Kings I taught at
Southampton University, Bournemouth
and Poole College and Wiltshire College.
I also deliver workshops for the public at
Southampton City Art Gallery.
“I am a professional artist and exhibit my
work countrywide. I also have paintings
in public art collections and permanent
work in public buildings in Bournemouth
such as the main library and two
hospitals.”
Our teachersAt Kings, our art and design teachers are all experienced
educators. They are also all talented artists, with interests
in a variety of specialisms.
“ Since June 2014 I have been the Head of Art for Kings Oxford, London and Bournemouth. I really enjoy the collaborative side of my role, working with other members of the art team to develop programmes of study that challenge and inspire our students. It is a pleasure to work with students from different cultures and I get great satisfaction helping our students fulfil their potential.
After taking a degree in Printed Textile Design I worked with different design portfolios selling to the Japanese and European fashion markets. My study of Textiles has taken to me to Africa and the Far East and has led to a lifelong passion for travel and learning about other cultures. I studied film editing processes in Beijing, China as part of Columbia University’s short course programme.
In 1998, I completed a PGCE in secondary teaching and since then I have mainly taught in the state education sector. I completed a Masters in Pedagogy and Contemporary Practices at Goldsmiths University, and my MA has enabled me to combine my passion for teaching with the development of my own ideas drawing on contemporary artistic practices. ”

English Language Development
You will take a broad skills-based
programme, progressing from a general
English focus to a more specialist focus.
You will gain the vocabulary and
language skills required for further study
in high-level art and design disciplines.
You will also develop essential study skills
so you are prepared for the demands of
art-related courses at Kings and beyond.
Assessment
Assessment is an integral part of the
course. It is continuous and formative.
Portfolio Development
The Portfolio Development module begins
with an general introduction to the main
art and design areas. You will develop
your skills and experience in both 2D and
3D disciplines. Gradually, you will build
your portfolio and we will work with you
to ensure you showcase your skills and
abilities in the best possible light.
Art and Design Preparation Programme
The Art and Design Preparation
Programme at Kings is perfect for
students who need to develop their
portfolio and/or their language level
prior to a main art-related course. As
such is it highly flexible and adaptable to
your specific needs, and has been
carefully designed to integrate with
several art-related programmes at Kings.

Progression optionsDepending on your ambition and
intention, the Art and Design Preparation
Programme can lead to a range of
specialist art and design-related
programmes at Kings.
Programme structureThe programme comprises two main
modules — the Portfolio Development
module and the English Language
Development module. These can be
adapted to the needs of each student. So,
for example, if you have a strong portfolio
but need to improve your English, you will
focus on the English Development
module. If you need to improve your
general art skills or develop your
experience and body of work, then you will
focus more on portfolio development.
Preparing a portfolio
Art Foundation students:
A minimum of 10 sheets of work with a
maximum of 20 sheets. Please also
send a short written statement (max
200 words), about your experience in
art, craft and/or design, why you would
like to do this course and what degree
subjects you are considering.
Art and Design Preparation
Programme students:
We suggest 3 – 5 sheets of work.
What should a portfolio consist of?
A portfolio should show the range of
work you have done in the last two
years, either in classes or in your own
time. Try to include work done in a
variety of media and materials.
You must include some drawing and
some work in colour. Please include
work done from direct observation,
alongside any other approaches you
have taken.
If you have done work relevant to the
specialist area(s) you are considering
(for example fashion or fine art)
please send examples of this.
Include any museum studies or work
inspired by other artists, designers or
craftspeople.
You may include 3D work: for
example garments, models,
sculptures or maquettes, items of
jewellery or body ornament. You
may have to send photos of these. If
you have done design work for any of
these pieces, please include it.
Include some developmental work
— not just finished pieces — showing
how you explore a subject or theme
and experiment with ideas visually.
It would be good to see examples of
sketchbook work.

Degree course outcomesThere is a huge range of possible degree
subjects, and combinations of subjects, in
art and design at UK universities. At Kings,
we guide you to the best pathway subject
choices according to your interests and
abilities, and to enable you to make the
best possible choice of university course
for each individual.
The table to the right shows typical degree
course outcomes, depending on the
choice of Art Foundation elective
modules.
The courseMost students, including UK nationals,
complete an Art Foundation course before
starting an art and design degree. Usually,
international students must also study a
general Foundation before they are
accepted on to an Art Foundation.
The Kings Art Foundation combines the
two so that international students with
artistic and creative ability can get to
university in just one year.
The course is underpinned by historical
and contemporary World Art studies.
There are also regular visits to the many
museums and galleries of Oxford and
London, and beyond.
Expert teaching
Teaching is based on the Edexcel
Diploma of Art Foundation. You will
benefit from small tutorial groups and
close individual attention.
Helping you build your portfolio
You will need to submit a portfolio as part
of your application to university or art
college. We will give you comprehensive
advice and support to help you build a
portfolio which will show off your skills
and abilities in the best possible way.
Accreditation and quality assurance
The Art Foundation is overseen by an
independent Advisory Board of Higher
Education, and moderated by an art
specialist.
Course structureThe first 8 weeks of the course introduce
you to all the main areas in art and design.
You will then move on to Pathway 1,
followed by Pathway 2, and in the final 8
weeks of the whole course you will work
on your Final Major Project, which leads to
a public exhibition.
Art Foundation
This course is for students wanting the
fastest, most direct path to an art and
design-related degree course at a UK
university.

Art Foundation subject overview
Degree Course Outcomes table
“Looking back on the whole year I would like to say that it was the busiest and the most difficult year in my life. Art Foundation becomes your life and you spend all your time in the art room. During the Art Foundation course I got a lot of useful experience and understood the process of presenting art projects. Looking forward to next year I am so excited to work with my pathway subject in a professional way, using equipment and special materials.”
Ksenia Umanska from Ukraine, studied Art Foundation at Kings before winning a place to study a Fashion Textiles degree
“In first term we tried different pathway subjects which I think really broadened my horizons and helped me to gain new skills in those spheres. The whole year was an amazing experience and unforgettable journey. I have learnt so many things and gained so much experience.”
Kamilla Argyngazina from Kazakhstan completed the Art Foundation at Kings and is now studying for an Architecture degree at the University of Westminster

COURSES —ACADEMIC
COURSES —ACADEMIC
Within the Foundation there are five pathways, one of which is
Architecture. This involves core modules in academic and study
skill, and IT, and specialist modules in art and design.
Course StructureFor students with appropriate IELTS and academic levels, the
Advanced Level Foundation can be followed as a standalone
three-term accelerated course.
Students study two core modules and a selection of specialist
elective modules depending on their intended future degree
course. Studying the art and design module, students taking the
Architecture pathway will learn how to:
communicate ideas in visual form
paint and draw in various media for different purposes
recognise and use the expressive potential in different
materials and processes
make connections between their own work and that of other
artists and designers, past and present
use effectively the resources of museums and galleries and
draw on these for ideas and inspiration
articulate a personal view of the subject
The course includes a total of 650+ tuition hours and also
requires extensive homework and private study.
Students who take A-levels in the UK are generally required to
study three or four different subjects. Alongside tuition in these
specialist subjects, the A-level programme at Kings also includes:
Classes in Academic English
IELTS preparation
The Kings Academic Enrichment Programme
Exam practice
Examinations leading to formal qualifications
Course StructureA-level Art and Design will develop your intellectual,
imaginative, creative and reflective skills.
You’ll also develop investigative, analytical, experimental,
practical, technical and expressive skills, an aesthetic
understanding and critical judgement. You’ll gain an

design and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate
as well as knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design
in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.
Kings offers different endorsements, for example Art, Craft and
Design, Fine Art and 3D Design.
The Advanced Level Foundation is a

“We go with our teacher to museums and galleries a lot, we take our sketch books, we draw something there, we take pictures, we come back and we do something with those. In my free time I also visit places — London is perfect for that because you can go anywhere and you’ll find something new. It’s the perfect city to study Art, I think.”
Irina Gorskaia from Russia studied Art as part of the Advanced Level Foundation before winning a place to study for a degree in Fashion: Media and Marketing
“I’ve found lots of inspiration from being in Oxford. For example, I love the architecture, especially the gothic architecture like the cemetery on Cowley Road. I like it, it inspires me. There’s a term that we have in Spanish that means kind of ‘eye candy’ — I see colours and details, I love details. I see structures and I think ‘I must draw it’ I’ve been to galleries and museums, and we’ve been to a lot with the art teachers here.”
