e Nakusp detachment of the RCMP are seeking information regard-ing a series of the s that occured in the Nakusp area in November. ese inci-dents involved a number of large indus-trial and utility items, with multiple sto-len in some cases.

On Nov. 3 the RCMP received a re-port of a the from a rural commercial property located south of Nakusp near the community of Edgewood. A Wara-tah HTH620 Log Processing Head was removed from a carrier machine and sto-len. e the , according to the property’s owner, occurred sometime between Nov.

1 and Nov. 3. On Nov. 10 the Nakusp RCMP

again received a report of a the , hav-ing occurred north of Nakusp on High-way 23. e perpetrators are believed to have come onto the property sometime between Nov. 7 and Nov 10. Among the items stolen were a red Polaris 900 Rang-er side-by-side, a red Honda generator, a Husqvarna chainsaw, and 2 solar panels.

On Nov. 17, there was a report of the the of a blue Kubota genset (valued at $10-12,000) from a rural work site along Highway 23 north of Nakusp. Based on the information currently available, po-

lice believe the o ence occurred some-time between Nov. 14 and Nov. 17.

Police are continuing to investigate these the s and are seeking assistance from the public. Anyone that has any knowledge of these incidents please contact the Nakusp RCMP Detachment at (250) 265-3677 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Columbia Cable, or YourLink sub-scribers in Nakusp have been infuriat-ed with the level of service they have come to rely on. Beginning around November 9, there was a general loss of speed, occasional loss of connection, and huge delays up-loading anything or even sending email.

Rick Offermann wrote a post in the Nakusp Commu-nicator on Face-Book, “I’ve run an internet bandwidth test. Sometimes the download speed is acceptable, but I always seem to

time out on the up-load test. Speed goes down, down, down as if it’s being choked off.”

Almost a week after the internet problem being ex-perienced in Na-kusp began, it was identified to be with equipment owned and operat-ed by a third party partner.

Tracey Buckley, BC Cable General Manager says, “We have been work-ing closely with our vendor to re-solve the problem as soon as possible, and to confirm an estimated time of repair. However, we were never able to accurately pre-

dict the estimated time for repair. As

of mid-day Friday,

November 21, our partner indicated the problem had been resolved. We did not communi-cate it at this time as we felt it neces-sary to monitor the system to ensure the repair performed completely alleviat-ed the impact.”

The company says they will be automatically ap-plying a full cred-it to each internet account, for each day, from Novem-ber 9 until the day the repairs have resolved the issue, which will appear on the January bill-ing. Customers can call their office at (250) 265-3733 with further questions.

One of Sorgent.e’s mis-sions is a commitment to working with First Nations and local communities. The Splatsin (anglicised to Spallumcheen) are the most southern tribe of the Shuswap Nation, whose ab-original territory stretches from the B.C./Alberta bor-der near the Yellowhead Pass to the plateau west of the Fraser River, southeast to the Arrow Lakes and to the upper reaches of the Columbia River.

During the signing, Kukpi7 Chief Wayne M. Christian stated, “In order to move away from govern-ment funding and to bring prosperity to our people, our vision is building long-term partnerships as the one we are signing today.” He added, “It is an honour to work with you to build the local economy.”

The idea to develop there started with Fosthall Creek Power Ltd. in 2001 and in 2013 they partnered

with Sorgent.e Hydro Can-ada to begin the devel-opment of a proposed 15 megawatt run-of-river proj-ect located close to Nakusp, B.C..

Located on the shore

of Upper Arrow Lake, the project has an environmen-tally friendly footprint that will include a spawning channel and a penstock that runs on an old log flume pathway.

Lucas de Haro, CEO of Sorgent.e Hydro Canada, emphasized the global and local spirit of Sorgent.e. “We are an international group that loves to become local where it works.”

There are examples of B.C. sport councils in Nel-son, Kamloops, and Abbots-ford as well as many focused on specific parties such as the Aboriginal Sport Council of BC. Sports councils serve many purposes, however, until October, one didn’t ex-ist in our region.

Val Mayes, founding member of our new local sports council said, “I think that credit for the original idea should really go to Lyn-da Lafleur, who in her ca-pacity as the CBT rep for the

area saw that sport and rec-reation groups were working in isolation or sometimes in competition, and realized that they could be much more successful if they had a way to work together.”

Rebecca Sargent, who is the Council Coordina-tor says, “We can credit the working team: Val Mayes, Ja-nis Neufeld, Troy Clark, Barb Chwachka, Joleen Minchin, and Kip Drobish for found-ing the council over the spring and summer of 2014.”

According to their bro-chure, “The North Koote-nay Region is a working definition including Kaslo,

Nakusp, New Denver, Slo-can and everyone in the sur-rounding areas.”

Sargent says, “The coun-cil aims to connect and sup-port smaller communities within the ‘North Kootenay’ region, giving them a unified voice in local government decisions surrounding sport and rec, and to avoid split-ting the already small popu-lation by offering courses or holding fundraisers in col-laboration rather than com-petition.”

They are hoping to get membership up to around 50 in the first year, “especially if most of them were groups

who could then connect us to their members for op-portunities such as courses, workshops, grants or fund-ing, and shared events,” says Sargent. The council will also be able to pool training opportunities, share services such as meeting spaces and mailing lists, and to act as a signal booster for informa-tion and promotion of all of the different types of sports that occur in the region.

For membership in-formation visit www.sport.nadb.ca or find them on Facebook, North Koote-nay Sport and Recreation Council.

Seniors’ Column

Part of the annual winterizing program carried out by car owners generally involves the switch to a different set of tires to make sure we can remain safe on the roads.

The question then follows: what can we do with our old or unwant-ed tires that we don’t wish to see abandoned alongside ditches, ran-domly piled up in one’s backyard or dumped within the local landfill facility?

Several years ago in response to

similar concerns, a non-profit ini-tiative entitled the Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC) recycling program came into being. The program’s goal is to collect an advance disposal fee, generally referred to as “eco-fee,” stemming from the sale of every new tire sold.

These fees are then used to cover the costs of transport-ing and recycling B.C. generated scrap tires, ensuring that these tires are disposed of within an en-vironmentally responsible venue as an alternative to them ending up dumped within undesirable lo-cations.

A number of innovative prod-ucts are then made from the recy-cled crumb rubber. These range from creating playground surfac-

es, landscaping mulch, colourful and resilient flooring commonly applied within recreational facili-ties and also one’s home or busi-ness premises.

The Tire Stewardship program has proved to be highly successful in our province, partially due to the commitment by registered local businesses that offer a free automo-bile, recreational and industrial use tire drop-off service that is open to the public.

Drop-off venues located with-in Nakusp and area include Cres-cent Bay Construction Ltd., 1002 Highway six (near Brouse), call (250) 265-3747. A second loca-tion is at Kal Tire (situated across from the public library in down-town Nakusp).

For more information, call (250) 265-4155.

TSBC programIt is not necessary to have made the new or initial purchase of the tires destined to be recycled at either of these business locations. Participa-tion within the TSBC program is offered free of charge to the public, and helps to expand any local efforts aimed at successfully protecting the environment and encouraging the development of additional programs with potential grant assistance made available through this non-profit organization. With anksgiving, Halloween and Remembrance Day in the rearview mirror, the holiday season now kicks it up a notch in preparation for Christmas.

Streets are being decorated, as is the mall and other local businesses. Christmas carols can be heard on the radio and Santa is arriving all around the Kootenay.

But the holiday season doesn’t just bring out shoppers and carollers. is is the time when many charitable organi-zations collect the majority of their donations.

e holiday season is crucial for groups like e Salva-tion Army, food banks and other charities and foundations.

You can already nd the red kettles out on the street and in the malls, collecting funds for those in need.

But why is it that this holiday brings out people’s gener-osity?

While there are those who donate their time and money to help charities all-year long, Christmas is the time when the casual giver opens up their wallets to lend a hand to others.

It could be that the spirit of giving merely over takes us, or perhaps we feel a certain amount of peer pressure to do-nate at this time. Or maybe it is the charities themselves that help us along by providing a little extra nudge.

It’s likely a combination of all of the above.Charities know that this is the most important time of the

year and need to bring in as many donations as possible in or-der to serve an ever-growing need. ey will advertise and pro-mote their campaigns harder than ever — and so they should.

Giving shouldn’t be something you do once a year. You have to wonder how many more people could be helped, if we gave this way all-year long.

Make sure you have some spare change and give what you can.

It was a tough season for the Nakusp Secondary School Sr. Girls volleyball team this year and despite their strengths the girls did not get the nish they were looking for at the zone playo s that took place at the Selkirk College in Cas-telgar on Nov. 14 and 15.

e Cougars lost all their elimination games during the zone tourna-ment, which, as best as we can interpret the stats, placed the Sr. girls tied for seventh out of eight partic-ipating teams from schools around the Kootenays.

So what happened? How did a team that devel-oped as a strong, aggressive volleyball unit and enjoyed

a successful season with a record of six wins, one loss fall to the bottom of the standings during crunch time?

“We had really good individual players, real-ly aggressive players that went for the ball,” coach Je-rome Goodman explained. “We were a hitting team; we hit everything we could and we were a really strong serving team. ese were our strengths.”

However, Goodman cited the adverse start to the volleyball season as a source of trouble for his team.

“It was challenging, mostly due to the short sea-son. Being the rst sport o the hop in September it was hard to get started with the whole school buzzing

and humming from the a ermath of the strike. Ev-eryone was scrambling so it was tough to get going. Taking three weeks o of the season is like taking a third of the season away and that’s huge.”

e run and gun sched-ule of playdates that were frantically thrown together in an attempt to produce a season did not yield any tournament play for the Cougars, forcing them to enter the zone competition with no real game-time ex-perience.

“ at probably hurt us the most,” Goodman re ects. “ e zones was the rst time the girls had certi ed referees not just students or teachers call-ing the games. e referees called the game tighter than

what we were used to and that exposed some of the things we take for granted. Once we started getting pe-nalized that threw the team o their rhythm and turned our aggressive team into a tentative team.”

e Cougars will have to lick their wounds from this year but Goodman is optimistic about the next season of play.

“Every year we learn more and more. We are better at teaching volleyball now than in past years. at should continue. is year we learned a lot about man-aging the team so hopeful-ly we can look forward to being more organized next year. at way the players can concentrate on volley-ball and will get more op-portunities to play.”

Lots of amazing things were for sale at the Legion’s Christ-mas Craft Fair this year.

From the moment I walked in Arrow Lakes Hospital emergency a er a bad fall against a rock, I was treated pleasantly, quickly, and knowledgeably by everyone I met. I made it through admitting re-ception, assessment with nurse Lori, consultation with Dr. Subzwari, X-rays with a great guy (name?) and nal consultation in just under one hour. Tell this to someone in the Canadian cities and they would think you were telling tall tales. But here in Nakusp, it is reality. I am utterly grateful for our hospital and the people who work in it.

There are a number of species in North America that have variable winter distribu-tion. Collectively known as the winter finches, these species include several that occur in our region: Pine Siskin, Com-mon Redpoll, Red Crossbill, Pine Grosbeak, and Evening Grosbeak. Some of these spe-cies breed in our region while others are here only in winter.

Since Canadian winters are relatively cold, a good win-ter food supply is essential. Winter distribution is based on food availability, but since different species have different food requirements, their oc-currence patterns may be quite different. Siskins and redpolls, for example, rely heavily on small seeds such as those found in birch trees, cedar

cones, and in ground growing weeds. Crossbills feed almost entirely on the seeds found in larger cones, such as Douglas fir, various pine and spruce trees. Pine Grosbeaks supple-ment their seed diet with a lot of berries. So, in years when the cone crop is good, but the birches did poorly, we might see an abundance of crossbills but few siskins.

This variable pattern of distribution is perhaps most exemplified by the siskins. A look at the results of some of our past Christmas bird counts illustrates the variabili-ty of this species in our region.

Thirty years of data show that the average number of Pine Siskins seen on count day is 360. Yet there have been nine years in which fewer than five were observed and twice the count has exceeded 2000. Common Redpolls average 92,

but thirteen years produced none at all and one year yield-ed almost 1000.

Where do siskins go when they aren’t in southern B.C.? The answer to that might sur-prise you. There are a num-ber of monitoring stations throughout North America where birds are caught in mist-nets, banded and released. Sometimes these banded birds are later re-captured, or some-times picked up dead on the side of the road. In the last 25 years, at least eight previously banded siskins have been re-covered in B.C.. Records indi-cate that these birds had been banded in New Jersey, North Carolina, Ontario, North Car-olina; Oregon, South Dakota, New York and Washington.

Clearly, siskins will trav-el considerable distances to find an area with a good food supply.

Nakusp mother Kimberly Macaulay doesn’t normally work as a concert promoter but that didn’t stop her from organizing what could be Nakusp’s biggest musical performance of the year. She and top-ten recording artist Andrew Allen both grew up in Vernon and were friends with some of the same people, so she decided to approach him about an idea she had for a fund-raiser.

Her husband, RCMP officer Mark MacAulay is in-volved in hockey at the Naksup Arena, so Kimberly had some ideas about what the arena and auditorium building needed in the way of improvements. Her goal is to raise enough funds to purchase some new items for the build-ing, starting with a divider to sepa-rate pick-up hockey from public skating.

“A lot of peo-ple are concerned about safety,” Ma-caulay says. She adds, “More heaters, for spectators inside the rink too. Fami-lies moving here are attracted to the fact that there is minor hockey. Big selling factor.”

Macaulay fig-ures that these im-provements will help tremendously. The auditorium and its sound system are due for an upgrade as well.

“The sound sys-tem is in need of re-placement. Andrew has to bring speak-ers and equipment. The building needs a new roof. There is a lot of stuff that the arena could use.”

Although there have been recent

grumblings about charges for hourly rental, the village is donating the time for Andrew’s con-cert, in light of the fact they are the re-cipient of the funds raised. After Ma-caulay pays artist fees, the costs of the bar and other expenses, any pro-ceeds will go to-ward improvements. She needs to sell 200 tickets and estimates sales are about half-way there.

Ticket buyers can expect a fun night. Nakusp’s very own local talent Mitchell Zorn will be opening and then Andrew Allen goes on at 8:30 p.m. for what Macaulay is calling the “Nakusp Christmas Dance Party.” Allen is hold-ing an earlier show for those under 19, because the evening event is licensed and will have a cash bar. Minor hockey will be operating the concession.

For ticket pur-chase, contact Kim-berly Macaulay di-rectly at (250) 265 7366, on Facebook at Kimber Fraser-Ma-caulay, or email kim-b e r ly _ ma c au l ay @hotmail.com.

Andrew Al-len has had two chart-topping hits since his first re-lease in 2009. He followed up “I Wan-na Be Your Christ-mas” with “Loving You Tonight” in 2010 and then, “I Want You” in 2011. Although he might not yet be a house-hold name, his songs are catchy, upbeat and famil-iar. Tour dates in December include Nakusp, Vancou-ver and Calgary. Allen has toured with some very big names, including the Barenaked Ladies, One Republic and Train.

November 23, 1934 It has been brought to our

attention that the Sand Creek Cabin in Edgewood has been partly torn down by someone too lazy to cut fire wood. Some of our hunting friends feel very hurt about this wanton destruction and feel that the offenders should be punished. This cabin has provided shelter for hunters for years and has always been maintained and has a wood supply at the site.

November 23, 1944 The Nakusp Board of Trade

endorsed a resolution to strongly protest the closing of the Mining Recorder’s office in Nakusp. It was con-sidered a backward step and the inconvenience of going to New Denver for vital sta-tistics and Game Act licens-es is entirely unnecessary.

November 25, 1954 Construction of a road

from Edgewood to Robson, improved ferry service on Kootenay Lake, better radio reception in the Kootenays and extenstion of the Moun-tain Standard Time west to the Cascades were pressed for in resolutions adopted by the semi-annual meeting for the West Kootenay Bound-ary Central Farmers’ Institute in Nelson.

November 19, 1964Construction has started

on a $53,000 automatic ex-change building at the cor-ner of Francis and Grace streets in Nakusp, for B.C. Telephone Company.

November 30, 1974 Brent Adair, Executive As-

sistant to Wm. King, MLA, told the News today that the old Arrow Lakes Hospital in Nakusp is not slated by the government for demolition. It was indicated last week that there was plans to tear

down the old building rath-er than renovate it for a long term residence for the aged.

November 21, 1984 The third house in three

years has been put to the torch at Valhalla Resort in Hills. On November 15 at about 2 a.m. a fire was spot-ted at the lakeside private resort and by the time aid arrived, the home of Law-rence Scivon of Revelstoke was beyond saving. The fully equipped home is identical to one which was torched last fall and also to two oth-ers on the site. The resort is jointly owned by 12 people from Trail, Castlegar and Revelstoke. At present there are still six major homes and several cottages on the site along with a trailer for a caretaker. Nobody was on the resort at the time of the fire. Most of the houses are occupied for the summer only. A $10,000 reward put

up by the owners for infor-mation leading to the con-viction of the arsonists still stands.

November 16, 1994 The Village of Nakusp was

presented with the Arrow Timber Supply Review by officials from the Arrow Forest District Office. Greg Rowe and Reiner Augus-tine told Council about the three reports which have been produced over the last two years to aid the provin-cial Ministry of Forests to make a decision on the An-nual Allowable Cut in the district.

November 24, 2004 After almost 20 months of

deliberations, public meet-ings and reviews, the Min-istry of Forests issued a cut-ting permit last week near Edgewood for Woodlot 301, otherwise known as Granite Ridge.

The Village of Nakusp is located on the shores of the Upper Arrow Lakes, and is surrounded by spectacular mountains, clear lakes and rivers, and breathtaking scenery. Nakusp is a community of 1600 offering amenities of a larger center and has recently completed a number of large infrastructure projects such as a Wastewater Treatment plant, Microhydro Energy plant and a Water Treatment Plant. In addition, there are more projects underway such as our reclaimed water and sludge management projects.

The Village is looking for a dynamic leader to join their management team as Director of Operations. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Operations will play a key role in the management, maintenance and operation of the Village’s infrastructure. The Director will provide support to the management team in strategic planning, departmental budgeting, and monitoring, risk management, and will advise the Chief Administrative Officer on all matters pertaining to the department. The successful candidate will have proven leadership and organizational skills, and will maintain effective working relationships with staff, businesses, other local governments, contractors, consultants, and the public.

The Director of Operation exercises a high degree of initiative and judgment and is responsible for the Public Works department (including the water and sewer utility) and the Parks/Arena department. The primary responsibilities and experience requirements are the safe and efficient management and operation of the department and its employees, water, sewer, mobile equipment, buildings and grounds, roads system, parks, capital and operating budgeting, capital projects and safety programs.

The preferred candidate will have post-secondary education in an Engineering related discipline, thorough knowledge of Public Works, Utilities and Park facilities and experience at a management level; individuals possessing a combination of training and experience will also be considered. Certification in water and/or wastewater operations through the Environmental Operators Certification program would be an asset. Proficiency in Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel is required.

Nakusp offers a competitive salary, excellent benefits package, a supportive work environment and supports continued career and professional development. Applicants are invited to submit their resume and cover letter to: Linda Tynan, CAO Village of Nakusp, email [email protected], fax 250-265-3788 or mail to PO Box 280, Nakusp BC V0G 1R0. For more information, please contact the Village office at 250-265-3689. This posting will be open until the position is filled.
