    Quote of the Month

    March 2014

I was born in Talbert, California (now Fountain Valley) on December 1916 in a small house that could not have been 20 feet square, that was the winter that the Santa Ana River flooded the area of this house, and according to Mom and Dad they had to carry on foot my sister, Mary and myself thru the water to Uncle’s house that was on higher ground. That same year we moved to Santa Fe Springs, where Dad farmed. Brother Frank and sister Lily were born while we

lived here. One thing I remember while living here was the first vehicle that Dad bought, I think it was a Chevy flat bed truck.

I started school when I was 5 years old (first grade) and we had to walk about two miles. In that same year we moved to Five Points in Norwalk and we had to change schools. When I went to class I was relieved to find someone that I had met at the Santa Fe Springs house (Walter De Bux-ton). We were in the same class until my junior year in high school. He was killed in the 1933 earthquake at the school.

The years between about the 3rd grade and the second year in high school passed without much memory of what happened. In high school I played football, basket-ball and track, competing in the “C” and “B” class teams.

    Studies Connect Socializing with

    Quality of Life

Social interaction may be as vital as physical activity for seniors, recent studies have revealed an increasingly stronger link between social interaction and mental & physical well-being for seniors. It’s indicated that an active social lifestyle is important in helping seniors maintain a sharp mind by being connected to the world around them, increase feelings of happiness, and develop a sense of belonging. Various studies have shown that socializing can produce the following positive effects:

    I. Improved mental health: Approximately 7 million people over the age of 65 experience symptoms of depression and it is estimated that dementia touches 1 in 7 Americans over the age of 71.

II. Improved nutrition: {roper nutrition is vital for seniors, but healthy habits are difficult to maintain when living alone. “Approximately 35% of elderly people suffer from mal-nutrition,” said Marie-Jeanne Kergoat, a professor at the Université de Montréal. Through a study among hospitalized seniors it was discovered that “patients ate more when social interactions were friendly and lively”.

III. Improved physical health: Multiple studies have also revealed that an active social life can boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, and reduce physical pain that is reinforced by depression.

Social interaction with peers, not just family members and other caregivers is necessary for sufficient socialization. Below are avenues for seniors to stay socially connected:

    · Join clubs and groups · Visit senior centers · Stay connected with friends and family · Get a pet · Attend church and special events · Learn new skills. Ex: using the internet.

It is not uncommon for people to resist change and some may need gentle encouragement to get more socially involved. However, the benefits of an active social lifestyle reach well

    into the future.

Throughout the course of a week, residents engaged in activities in celebration of Valentine’s Day. On Tuesday, February 11th, residents that attended cooking class decorated heart shaped cookies with frosting and valentine’s colored sprinkles. The class was ran by Director of Sales and Marketing, Marc Aronoff and assisted by volunteer Tami Shiotani.

On Valentine’s Day Yukari and Joe graced us with their beautiful voices for the second year in a row. The two sang a mixture of Japanese and American favorites, including, “My Funny Valentine.” At the party, residents were able to enjoy snacks and good company. A few were even lucky to win a prize from our Valentine’s Day Raffle!

It is estimated that there is a total number of more than 5.52 million vending ma-chines in Japan, which would be one vending ma-chine for every twenty-three people! While beverage vend-ing machines are the most common, there is a wide variety of stock held in these machines, such as, ice cream, frozen foods, cigarettes, electronics, alcohol, and even crab! Vending machines are continuing to evolve and becom-ing more innovative around the world.
