Welcome to

New Generations Month!

Just the words New Generations sound energizing and the programs Rotary embraces under

this avenue of service certainly do, as we empower young people to fulfil their dreams and

aspirations.

Look at the Interact Club of Kathmandu Mid-Town, Nepal winners of the last year’s

video competition for from the 14,305 Interact Clubs in Rotary and all linked to Rotary

Clubs.

The Rotary Youth Exchange Program which provides an opportunity for young peo-

ple 15-18 to study overseas and learn about other cultures. This year we have in-

bound and outbound students and if you would like to see them all together, come

to the Conference in Canberra where you will amazed by their diversity and their

ability to quickly learn some of our Australian ways.

So invite any number of guest speakers about the above programs to your clubs to

learn more about New Generations as it goes along with the theme for our Confer-

ence “Our Youth Our Future”

How is your planning going for Rotary Celebrations for “110 years on 23 February

2015”, I mentioned the lighting up of Mt Keira, well Leigh Robinson now has several

clubs around Australia following his lead. Last week I meet with the Presidents of

group C and I will quote President Allan Teale “I love a challenge and I love compe-

tition” so let the competition begin and let’s see who can “Light up Rotary”

District Conference Chairman Kate McKenzie has a slogan for the Canberra Confer-

ence “Road Trip” and as I have mentioned all Clubs from both Districts are invited

to have a stall to highlight their projects and maybe be able to expand it with other

clubs able to collaborate with.

Warwick Richardson [email protected] will co-ordinate for our district and

applications forms will be on the conference website within the week.

Have a great month of September!

Cheers, Barry.

BLACKTOWN BOYS HIGH SCHOOL Newsletter Term 2

On Saturday the 10th May, Chaopeng Ma, Sarthak Garg, and

Yasin Rahman represented our school in the Rotary District

9675 Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) competition.

Over 24 schools arrived at Blacktown Boys’ High School in the

clothing of their respective countries. This brought much col-

our and authenticity to the occasion.

Our students represented Indonesia in the debate, and they

were eager to commence with the first resolution which was

about the principle of sovereign equality of all member states.

The calibre of the debate throughout the day was impressive,

with students expressing the views of their designated countries

in an articulate and persuasive manner. Students quickly got

into the spirit of the day by immersing themselves in the machi-

nations of backroom deals to get their resolutions passed by the

General Assembly.

Our School would like to congratulate our students again for

their efforts. Our second place in the competition ensured our

team attend the National MUNA which was held at the Old Par-

liament House in Canberra from Friday, 15th August to Sunday,

17th August 2014.

Our boys represented South Korea in the National Competition

and although our boys were not successful on the day, they

reported that they thoroughly enjoyed their experience. We

would also like thank the Rotary Club of Blacktown City for their

continued support of our school.

GRAFFITI REMOVAL DAY

SUNDAY 26 OCTOBER

BIGGER AND BETTER IN 2014! The gauntlet has been thrown down to Rotary Clubs and Dis-

tricts throughout NSW … let’s make Graffiti Removal Day

2014 ‘bigger and better’ than ever before …

Sunday October 26 is the chosen date and planning is now

well underway for another outstanding event.

Rotary has formed a unique partnership with the New South

Wales Government to combat the growing social curse of

graffiti vandalism!

Our State Government will again fund the project to ensure

that Rotary clubs and other community partners have every

possible resource at their disposal.

More than 50 local government areas will take part in Graffiti

Removal Day and it is the goal of the project committee to

have Rotary District and Club coordinators working alongside

Council coordinators in each of the Local Government areas.

Concerted efforts are being made to enlist support of NSW

secondary schools and the NSW Police Force in 2014.

Bob Aitken explained that Rotary Clubs can lend support to

the campaign in many ways –

Form a club Graffiti Removal Team

Provide volunteers to join and work with existing teams

Identify and nominate Graffiti sites in their domestic or

business neighbourhoods.

Promote Graffiti Removal Day within their communities

and encourage public involvement, which could provide

a source of new members?

Make Graffiti Removal Day on October 26 a fun, social

event with provision of a barbecue and refreshments

for Graffiti Removal teams and volunteers.

This annual program is only possible through the very gener-

ous support of the NSW Government and major sponsor Du-

lux

Many Rotary clubs have been inspired by Graffiti Removal

Day and are maintaining sustained support with the estab-

lishment of permanent Graffiti Removal teams as part of

their annual service programs.

All information will be available on the official web site –

POLIO’S ENDGAME POLIO’S ENDGAME POLIO’S ENDGAME ––– UPDATE, SEPTEMBER 2014UPDATE, SEPTEMBER 2014UPDATE, SEPTEMBER 2014

6

Firstly, on behalf Rotary International and indeed our District committee I sincerely

thank Clubs and Rotarians who contributed to Polio during our last Rotary year. For me

it is not about competitions or reaching budgets but about giving what you can and

when you can. However, as a guide we thought it would be rewarding if District 9675

could contribute $75,000.00. Thank you my friends, we underestimated your commit-

ment, collectively you contributed $99,000, and remember with the Gates Challenge of

2 for 1 you have instigated a contribution of $297,000, a gratifying result and truly re-

warding.

Polio as of 2014 - Global cases as at 20th August is 146 compared with 355,000 annually

Polio detected in sewage sample from a regional Airport near São Paulo, does this not

support that this disease may only be a plane ride away.

Recently the World Health Organization confirmed wild poliovirus type 1 was detected in a sewage sample collected in March 2014 near São Paulo. Brazilian authorities are conducting further investigations to rule out any local spread, but to date no cases of polio have been reported. Brazil has been polio-free since 1989. Genetic sequencing found the positive sample to be most closely related to a virus found in Malabo, Equato-rial Guinea.

The detection of poliovirus in sewage underscores what Rotary and its partners have long known: in today's global society, if polio exists anywhere, children everywhere are at risk. Fortunately and Rotary emphasizes this, that there is no case of acute polio in Brazil at this time and going forward is monitoring the situation very closely.

We must keep up our advocacy, hard work and fundraising, as you can see it can spread

again so easily.

The 24th October is World Polio Day and it is fast approaching, this gives us a great

opportunity to keep public awareness of our promise and dream and there are many

ways we can do this. Consider taking part in, and sign up at www.wgmeal.co for the

World’s Greatest Meal to Help End Polio on or about that date, simple, invite a few

friends or family home to a dinner, take the opportunity to explain how Rotary 30 odd

years ago had this dream and made a promise to all children and ask for a small

donation. You could also dedicate your Club meeting;

if you do this make sure you invite partners and

members of your communities. Also contact your local

newspapers and give them some editorial.

If you would like me to send you some information

and history on Polio Eradication, or a press release,

please contact me. Keith

Remember our promise to

all children; it may only be

a plane ride away.

Call out to

Rotarians and friends:

Rotaract is going to create a internet based club and they are looking for young people who may have at-tended RYPEN, RYLA or maybe they are the chil-dren of Rotarians and

friends who may want to be part of the start of a

something new in Rotaract.

with details of proposed member.

I have met so many wonderful people during my travels around the district of the past two years. With your help we have been able to raise $45,000 to fund an Interplast mission. Many thanks to all those clubs who have become involved and contributed to this very worthwhile cause. You all should have a very warm feeling knowing that your assistance will help a number of people with disfiguring disabilities. At this stage I don’t know where our mission will be going but I will keep you fully informed and I will hopefully get to as many clubs as possible to personally thank them for this magnificent effort. To those clubs who haven’t donated I will be endeavouring to visit you as well because our aim is to fund another mission over the next two years. Please keep me in mind when you are looking for a guest speaker. Many, many thanks for all your support. Di North District 9675 Chair Interplast

Congratulations District 9675!

Donations In Kind provides

humanitarian aid through

provision of donated goods.

Recently Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS)

Chairman PDG John McLaren initiated a meeting of the Re-

gional Chairs of Donations in Kind (DIK) to review and en-

hance this valuable program.

The meeting high-lighted the intrinsic value DIK is not only to

RAWCS but indeed to all Rotary Clubs in fulfilling their ideals

in providing humanitarian aid to people less fortunate. How-

ever, like all programs there is a time to review and re-

evaluate and this was the purpose of the meeting.

Discussions were held regarding warehousing facilities, safety

of volunteers, OH&S and risk management, policies and pro-

cedures, national management, central stock listings, on-line

standard documentation, funding, corporate partnerships,

legal obligations, assets and understanding of foreign poli-

cies. Broadly speaking the meeting realised the need to en-

hance the existing policies and procedures for consistency,

greater coordination and collaboration nationally as a re-

source for Rotary Clubs in collating and distributing valuable

and usable donated goods for use in their local and off shore

community programs.

A new position of National Manager was seen as being im-

portant to the future of DIK and PDG Keith Roffey was ap-

pointed and accepted this role. Along with Keith, each Re-

gional Chair has willingly accepted the challenge in reviewing

various aspects of DIK with the main focus being to further

establish and upgrade existing procedures as required by

todays ever changing needs.

The meeting attendees have every confidence that the out-

come will strategically reposition Donations In Kind to be a

greater resource for all Rotary Clubs in providing knowledge

and expertise to what has become a rather complicated pro-

cess in the transportation of these goods.

Clubs can now expect to hear more on how DIK can assist

them with a streamlined process in

achieving their goals.

What's your club’s story:

There’s always a space for you to add your club’s story.

If you have interesting facts send them to me, I’ll try and put them

in the A&A.

Your pictures/photos would look great in our District newsletter,

so send them to me with a caption and/or a story.

PLEASE no more than 200 words!

What are you waiting for? Rotarians all over our district are inter-

ested in your story. After all this is your newsletter!

Please email items to the Editor at

by 22nd of each month for addition to the next issue.
