Courses

1. ATU (L) provides courses covering a

wide range of military subjects, which are

designed to directly support Reserve Unit

commanders develop and maintain military

capability.

2. Defence Instructions and Notices,

2013 DIN07-179 dated Dec 2013 states

the requirements for course trained

personnel within a unit and the mandatory

qualifications to be held by them.

3. Additionally, units need sufficient

suitably qualified staff to conduct training

in order to achieve their Military Annual

Training Test (MATT) objectives.

4. ATU (L) courses are designed to

qualify each student attending and to

meet the standards set by the respective

Training Standards Authority (TSA).

5. All Specialist Training delivered by ATU

(L) is conducted by qualified and

accredited instructors, who undergo

continuous internal and external

validation.

6. Units are reminded that the laid down

criteria for attendance (rank and pre-

requisite qualifications) need to be

adhered to in order to ensure that students

receiving training attain formal

qualifications for the training undertaken.

Students who successfully complete

ATU (L) run courses are provided with a

course certificate to confirm the training

undertaken and the qualification gained.

7. Where courses span a number of

weekends, it is mandatory that students

complete all elements in order to receive

the relevant Military qualification.

8. Following successful completion of a

training course, units will need to ensure

that the appropriate JPA action is taken

to correctly document the qualifications

held by personnel trained at ATU (L).

9. Many of the ATU (L) Specialist Training

Courses are accredited by the Institute of

Leadership and Management (ILM), and

can be added to the soldiers personal

civilian CV. This acts as a valuable

recognition of the soldiers transferable

Military skills to their civilian employer.

10. Full details of the accredited

courses are shown below, and

opportunities to apply for the

accreditation is made at the beginning

of each course - as some extra course

work and reflective learning is required

to demonstrate the additional

understanding of the course subject

matter, for submission at the end of the

course:

Military Course v Civilian Accredited Qualification

Note that all Military Courses are currently being reviewed with the aim of recognising all transferable skills from military to civilian business areas. All future Accreditation opportunities will be notified by ABNs or DINs via the normal briefing channels.

06 | ATU (L) Courses Handbook 2014-15

Bidding for Courses

1. The number of vacancies for each

course depends on external regulations

and instructor availability.

2. Course booking forms are available:

a. By e-mail from ATU (L) to:

[email protected]

b. Online from the ATU (L) website

on ArmyNet:

https://www.ArmyNet.mod.uk/club/

navigate2.php?pageID=39402

3. Course places are allocated on a

first come first served basis and will

be confirmed back to the Unit via a

fax or e-mail for each student

application.

4. When completing the Booking form

please note that the specific course

number must be quoted and not the

weekend serial number or date, if more

than one course is being bid for - a

separate Booking form is to be used for

each course.

5. In rare circumstances, courses may be

cancelled because the student group

would be too small to achieve the

necessary learning momentum. In this

instance, Units will be notified as soon as

possible.

6. When making a booking Units should

ensure that the student is committed and

available to attend for the full duration of

the course, as students who fail to attend

may result in depriving other people of

the training, or could result in a course

being cancelled on the day.

7. In order to minimise the impact of late

withdrawals and non-attendees, bids can

be accepted from units on courses which

are full on a ‘reserve’ basis. Units will be

notified upon submitting a course bid

that the student is a reserve, and that, a

confirmed course place will be given as

soon as is practicable or alternatively if the

reserve reports to Longmoor Barracks on

the Friday evening of Weekend One they

may be accepted onto the course in place

of a non-attendee.

8. The latest date by which written

course bids must be received is six

weeks before the course starts to allow

sufficient time for Joining Instructions to

be sent out (approximately four weeks

before the course is due to commence).

9. In exceptional cases, such as very

late course bids etc. Units are encouraged

to contact ATU (L) by telephone, to

enquire about late availability on courses.

10. It is imperative that the gender and

any special dietary requirements are

specified on the Booking form so that the

students’ needs and accommodation

needs are met, and also so that Unit

master records can be set up correctly

and subsequently maintained.

11. A wall chart of the Training Course

calendar is available, and can be

downloaded from the ATU (L) ArmyNet

website.

duration at weekends. Only on

exceptional circumstances would

permission be granted to leave from the

consulted for this permission. All students

are to be aware of this requirement.

16. This requirement is based on

student feedback and training results -

which have been shown to be

enhanced when

students have the ability to train, revise

and assist each other throughout the

training weekends during the courses.

17. ATU (L) instructors are committed to

support all students on every course to the
