President’s Message You may have heard me say before that to realize the full value of being a Rotarian you must attend a District Conference and an International Convention. It is at these events where you can really experience what the “international” in Rotary International means – fellowship, service and pride. We ALL have something to be proud about after this last weeks District Conference! The Rotary Club of Los Angeles received many awards in every Avenue of Service – from our El Rodeo newsletter (thanks Walker Railey!) and our Website (thanks Suzanna Sahakian!) and Tony Medley who creates our “Meeting Memo-ries” for both media . . . to our Community and International Service Projects, Membership, Fundraising, Club Service, Vocational and New Generations Divisions. When you see Marjorie Heller, please thank her . . . not only for Chairing the Community Service Projects Management and Implementation Committee that “brings our projects to life,” but for documenting LA5’s great story and presenting it to the District Recognition Awards Committees. Here are the District 5280 Recognition Awards 2010-11 results:

In Memoriam

Dwight Radcliff

LA5 Member

Dwight was an incredible guitar player and, after serving in

the Air Force, toured with Stevie Wonder in the 1980s. He

had a hard time finding balance in his life, and fell into a

struggle with substance abuse, ultimately becoming just one

more anonymous homeless person.

Mustering the courage to get his life back on track, he

cleaned up and earned a certificate in drug and alcohol

counseling from UCLA. Dwight knew firsthand what life can

be without a strong support network, so he dedicated him-

self to helping others by creating a leading national organi-

zation to provide services for former troops facing similar

obstacles.

As president and chief executive of United States Veterans

Initiative, his group helped thousands of veterans find jobs,

homes and counseling.

Paul Netzel Elected to Council on Legislation

LA5’s Nominee to serve on the 2013 Council of Legislation, Paul Netzel was elected by Electors from the District’s Clubs at the District 5280 Conference last weekend.

The Council on Legislation meets every three years to discuss, revise and propose new By-Laws for Rotary International world-wide. Paul has been there on two previous occasions. This will be his last, as Dis-trict Representatives are limited to three terms.

There is not doubt that Paul Netzel’s experience as LA5’s Past Presi-dent, Past District 5280 Governor, Past Rotary International Director, and many more significant assignments with RI will be valuable as he now represents our Club and our District at the international level.

CONGRATULATIONS PAUL!!!
