NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC!
Asbestos Notice:
The purpose of this notice is to inform all interested persons that all buildings at Arlee
Elementary School District #8J have been inspected thoroughly for asbestos containing materials
and a management plan has been developed in accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency
Responsive Act of 1986 (AHERA). We have completed the asbestos management and abatement
procedure according to the plan documents, and will continue to manage what asbestos remains in
a safe and prudent manner. Periodical surveys are done every six months by Maintenance
Supervisor, Gregg Dougherty, to ensure the condition of the building is safe. Arlee Schools passed a
three year cycle inspection in January of 2011 done by Steve Hafferty of MSGIA (Montana Schools
Group Insurance Authority). A copy of the management plan is available for review at the Business
Office, 72220 Fyant Street, Arlee, MT without cost or restriction.

Our summer has gone fast and we are looking forward to another good year here at AJHS. Here is some information you may
be interested before school starts. The JHS office will open on Monday, August 11th. If you need anything, please give me a

New updated changes in the student handbook so please review the 2014-2015 Student handbooks with your child &
returned the signature page as soon as possible. Student handbooks are available online at: www.arlee.k12.mt.us. Select JH
under Schools and view the left side for information.
New Year Forms: Handbook and required information for your child to start school will be handed out the first day of school.
Please go over these items with your child and return to school ASAP. These forms are important and are good for all year.
Here is a list of the forms your child will receive: Computer/Appropriate Use (without this form students are not allowed to
use computers so please turn in), Handbook Signature Page complete, Medical Form/Field Trip form( one page, front & back),
Free & Reduced Lunch Form (please return EVEN if your child does not qualify) and student information update. Updating &
turning in these forms will help us contact you in case of an emergency and your child participating in activities. Other forms
your child may need are JOM/Impact Aid (if one is not on file), Medication Form.
Activity Pass - All students in JH will need to purchase an activity pass, price has not changed and is $30.00 per student.
Students who are participating in any sport (6th – 8th) will need to have the pass purchased before they are allowed to
participate. Scholarships are available if you are having trouble purchasing your child’s pass. Activity Passes will allow students
free gate fee into all 7-12 sporting events during the regular season that are played at Arlee School. Proceeds from these
passes are returned to the JH athletic fund to help pay for officials, workers and bus transportation to games. Students who do
not participate as a player but attend will benefit with the cost saving of gate fees and getting the pass at the start of the year
is the best cost saver.
Activity Pass – Prices- Students (K-12) $30.00, Individual Adult Pass $50.00, Couple Pass $65.00, Family Pass $80.00.
*Students who participate as a player in activities will need to purchase their pass separate from a family pass.
Sports Forms: Required for students participating in sports grades 6th – 8th, BEFORE you are allowed to practice or play.
Physical (purchased after May, 2014 to qualify-completed & signed by parent/guardian and student), medical consent,
participation permission, transportation form, athletic/activity handbook signature page, and the Youth Protection Concession
Form from parents & students. Without all of these forms, students will not be allowed to practice or participate in any
sporting activity.
Through our school website, parents/guardians are now allowed to pay for fees using the online system. Please contact
Francis Ryan, Network Administrator at 726-3216 ext. 2400 to find out information.

News From the High School - Another summer is about over
and we are ready to head back
to school. Hopefully everybody
has had a restful and enjoyable
vacation. We are looking
forward to the New Year and
getting back into the swing of
the school year. Over the
summer, we have had some
very positive changes and are
looking forward to
implementing theses changes.
Arlee High School is welcoming
three new teachers to our staff
this fall. We have Bonnie
White, Holly Kincaid and
Julia Simmons as our
newbies. Bonnie White will
be teaching Math and Science.
Holly Kincaid will be teaching
Math and Julia Simmons will
be our new Family and
Consumer Science Teacher.
At Arlee High School, we will
be issuing a Chrome book
computer to each high school
student. Please watch for
parent meetings to distribute
the computers and go over the
rules and goals of how these
are to be used.
The Arlee School Board has
changed the eligibility for
students who participate in
extra and co-curricular
activities. The new eligibility
policy calls for a 2.0 GPA and
no failing grades at mid-terms
and quarterly. Also, grades will
only be posted on transcripts at
the semesters. You will,
however, be receiving mid-term
and quarterly grade reports as
in the past.
We look forward to a great

or above GPA and letter in his/her sport for the season.
Thank you on behalf of the Music Boosters for helping us profit $503.84 from the Coffee House and selling the drinks during the
lunch break the last few weeks of school. Thanks to everyone who helped out by donating items and working and especially to
Shawna O’Neill and Kim Folden for helping to sell at lunch time. An extra BIG thanks to Kathleen for the nice donation!

Re: 2014-2015 School Year Annual Yearly Progress Report – Public School Choice: No Other School at Grade Span Dear Parent or Guardian: The main goal of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 is to ensure that all children in this country receive a quality education so that they can be academically successful in a high-performing educational environment. Under NCLB, each state is required to assess all of the schools within their districts to determine whether each school has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), which means that they have met the academic testing standards set by the state. Due to the Montana Office of Public Instruction’s decision to change testing instrument formats for the 2013-2014 school year from MontCAS to Smarter Balance, which is the assessment instrument used to support Montana Common Core Standards, it was determined all Montana school districts’ AYP status would remain the same for the 2014-2015 school year as it was for the 2013-2014 school year. We have determined that this option is not practicable due to the distances involved and the high cost of fuel for parents or the other district to pay for transportation. Re: Free Tutoring for Your Child!
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Help your child succeed in school – sign up for free tutoring! As a result of the federal No Child
Left Behind Act, your child can receive extra help in the areas of math, reading, and language arts.
You may receive this free tutoring because your child’s school is in its second year or later of
“school improvement” and our district has a school-wide Title I program.
Your child’s school has been identified for improvement because it did not meet the math and
reading threshold as determined by our scores on the criterion-reference test. We welcome
suggestions on how to improve the school in these areas.
For now, you may choose a free tutoring program that is best for your child. A list of approved
tutoring programs, also referred to as Supplemental Educational Services or SES, is attached to this
letter. These programs have been approved by the state department of education and will provide
your child with tutoring that is coordinated with what is being taught in school.
When deciding which tutoring program is best for your child, you may want to ask these questions:
When and where will the tutoring take place (at school, home, a community center)?
How often and for how many hours in total will your child be tutored?
What programs, by grade levels and subject areas, are available for your child?
What type of instruction will the tutor use (small group, one-on-one, or the computer)?
What are the tutors’ qualifications?
Can the tutor help if your child has disabilities or is learning English?
Is transportation available to and from where the tutoring will take place?

about these services. If you would like to select a tutor now, you can fill out the enclosed Provider
Selection Form and mail or deliver it to the school. There are two enrollment opportunities in the
school year to enroll in SES. The first enrollment window is Aug. 25-Sept. 30, 2014 and the second
enrollment window is Jan. 1- Feb. 5, 2015.

Bus Guidelines 1. The driver is in full and complete charge of the bus and students riding at all times. Disrespect or
defiant conduct toward the bus driver will result in an immediate suspension or revocation of bus riding privileges. Any student who disobeys the above rules in a manner which, in the opinion of the driver, causes a safety concern, will be suspended the first time for not less than one day, the second time for not less than five days and on the third time will be considered for permanent revocation of bus privileges by the principal and/or superintendent.
2. Students who must walk to their bus stop or home should walk facing traffic on the left of the road.
3. Students should plan to be at the bus stop on time. Students are expected to wait for the bus by standing quietly, remaining off the road and not bothering other students who are waiting for the bus. The bus driver will leave the stop as soon as the bus is safely loaded. Drivers are instructed to leave bus stops on time.
4. Students should conduct themselves as follows while riding the bus. Students should;
(a) Stay seated in their seats except when getting on or off the bus; (b) Be kind and considerate of others; (c) Keep hands, feet and objects out of the bus aisle; (d) Talk to friends or other students in reasonable tones and not yell or shout; (e) Not speak to the driver unless it is very necessary or the driver asks them a question; (f) Pick up trash around or under their seats.
5. Each student may be assigned a seat as the bus driver desires. Once a student is assigned a
seat, only the bus driver or the school administrator may change the seat assignment. 6. Students should walk in an orderly manner when getting on or off the bus. When students must
cross the road; they must do so IN FRONT of the bus and ONLY when signaled by the driver. 7. Only students attending Arlee School may ride the bus. Students may ride only on the bus to
which they are assigned, unless they have a signed note from their parent. That note must be approved by the school office personnel. The ability to ride a different bus other than the one to which a student is assigned depends on whether there is enough room.
8. Bus seats are legally designed to hold three passengers on each seat. Buses have a legal
capacity set by the number of seats. Should there be more students who want to ride than there is seating for them, then the following guideline will be used to determine who must wait for a second run:
(a) Disabled students will ride first; (b) Other students will be loaded by grade with those in the lowest grades being first; (c) The bus driver may allow an older child to ride, if that child has the responsibility of caring for brothers or sisters and no adult is likely to be present at home.
9. Prohibited items/actions: students may not bring any item on the bus which, in the opinion of the
driver, could be dangerous to other passengers; pets may not travel on school buses; and students may eat or drink on the bus with driver permission.

Lead in Drinking Water
The United States Protection Agency (EPA) and Arlee High School are concerned about lead in your drinking water. Although most homes
have very low levels of lead in their drinking water, some homes in the community have lead levels above the EPA action level of 15 parts per
billion (ppb), or 0.015 milligrams of lead per liter of water (mg/L). Under Federal law we are required to have a program in place to minimize lead in your
drinking water by December 2011.
This program includes:
1. Corrosion control treatment (treating the water to make it less likely that lead will dissolve into the water);
2. Source water treatment (removing any lead that is in the water at the time it leaves our treatment facility); and
3. A public education program.

Health Effects of Lead
Lead is a common metal found throughout the environment in lead-based paint, air, soil, household dust, food, certain types of pottery porcelain and
pewter, and water. Lead can pose a significant risk to your health if too much of it enters your body.
Lead builds up in the body over many years and can cause damage to the brain, red blood cells and kidneys. The greatest risk is to young children and
pregnant women. Amounts of lead that won’t hurt adults can slow down normal mental and physical development of growing bodies. In addition, a child
at play often comes into contact with sources of lead contamination – like dirt and dust – that rarely affect an adult. It is important to wash children’s hands
and toys often, and to try to make sure they only put food in their mouths.
Lead in Drinking Water
Lead in drinking water, although rarely the sole cause of lead poisoning can significantly increase a person’s total lead exposure, particularly the exposure of
infants who drink baby formulas and concentrated juices that are mixed with water. EPA estimates that drinking water can make up 20% or more of a
person’s total exposure to lead.
How Lead Enters Our Water
Unlike most drinking water contaminants, lead is unusual in that it seldom occurs naturally in water supplies like rivers and lakes. Lead enters drinking
water primarily as a result of the corrosion, or wearing away, of materials containing lead in the water distribution system and household plumbing. These
materials include lead-based solder used to join copper pipe, brass and chrome-plated brass faucets, and in some cases, pipes made of lead that connect
your house to the water main (service lines). In 1986, Congress banned the use of lead solder containing greater than 0.2% lead, and restricted the lead
content of faucets, pipes and other plumbing materials to 8.0%.
When water stands in lead pipes or plumbing systems containing lead for several hours or more, the lead may dissolve into your drinking water. This means
the first water drawn from the tap in the morning, or later in the afternoon after returning from work or school, can contain fairly high levels of lead.
Steps to Reduce Exposure to Lead in Drinking Water
Despite our best efforts mentioned earlier to control water corrosivity and remove lead from the water supply, lead levels in some homes or
buildings can be high. To find out whether you need to take action in your own home, have your drinking water tested to determine if it
contains excessive concentrations of lead. Testing the water is essential because you cannot see, taste, or smell lead in drinking water.
Some local laboratories that can provide this service are listed in this document. For more information on having your water tested, please
call 726-3216 ext. 2206.
If a water test indicates that the drinking water drawn from a tap in your home contains lead above the 15 ppb, then
you should take the following precautions:
1. FLUSH YOUR SYSTEM.
Flushing tap water is a simple and inexpensive measure you can take to protect your family’s health. Flushing usually uses less than one or two gallons of
water and costs less than $2 per month.
To flush, let the water run from the tap before using it for drinking or cooking any time the water in a faucet has gone unused for more than six hours. The
longer water resides in your home’s plumbing, the more lead it may contain. Flushing the tap means running the cold water faucet until the water gets
noticeably colder, usually about 15-30 seconds. If your house has a lead service line to the water main, you may have to flush the water for a longer time,
perhaps one minute, before drinking. Although toilet flushing or showering flushes water through a portion of your home’s plumbing system, you still need
to flush the water in each faucet before using it for drinking or cooking.
To conserve water, fill a couple of bottles for drinking water after flushing the tap, and whenever possible use the first flush water to wash dishes or water
plants.
If you live in a high-rise building, letting the water flow before using it may not lessen your risk from lead. This is because high rise plumbing systems have
more and sometimes larger pipes than smaller buildings. Ask your landlord for help in locating the source of the lead and for advice on reducing the lead
level.
2. USE ONLY COLD WATER FOR COOKING AND DRINKING.
Try not to cook with, or drink water from the hot water tap. Hot water can dissolve more lead more quickly than cold water. If you need hot water, draw
water from the cold tap and heat it on the stove.
3. REMOVE LOOSE SOLDER AND DEBRIS FROM PLUMBING MATERIALS.
Remove loose solder and debris from the plumbing materials installed in newly constructed homes, or homes in which the plumbing has recently been
replaced. To do this, remove the faucet strainers from all taps and run the water from 3-5 minutes. Thereafter, periodically remove the strainers and flush
out any debris that has accumulated over time.
4. IDENTIFY AND REPLACE LEAD SOLDER.
If your copper pipes are joined with lead solder that has been installed illegally since it was banned in 1986, notify the plumber who did the work and
request that he or she replace the lead solder with lead-free solder. Lead solder looks dull gray, and when scratched with a key looks shiny. In addition,
notify your State Department of Environmental Quality about the violation.
5. HAVE AN ELECTRICIAN CHECK YOUR WIRING.
If grounding wires from the electrical system are attached to your pipes, corrosion may be greater. Check with a licensed electrician or your local electrical
code, to determine if your wiring can be grounded elsewhere. DO NOT attempt to change the wiring yourself because improper grounding can cause
electrical shock and fire hazards.
IF LEAD LEVEL PERSISTS
The steps described above will reduce the lead concentrations in your drinking water. However, if a water test indicates that the drinking water coming
from your tap contains lead concentrations in excess of 15 ppb after flushing, or after we have completed our actions to minimize lead levels, then you may
want to take the following additional measures:
6. PURCHASE OR LEASE A HOME TREATMENT DEVICE.
Home treatment devices are limited in that each unit treats only the water that flows from the faucet to which it is connected, and all of the devices require
periodic maintenance and replacement. Devices such as reverse osmosis systems or distillers can effectively remove lead from your drinking water. Some
activated carbon filters may reduce lead levels at the tap. However, all lead reduction claims should be investigated. Be sure to check the actual
performance of a specific treatment device before and after installing the unit.
7. PURCHASE BOTTLED WATER FOR DRINKING AND COOKING.
