JIM WADDELOW – CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Dr. Jim Waddelow joined the faculty of Meredith College as Director of Instrumental Activities in 2007 where he conducts the Meredith Sinfonietta, White Iris Light Opera, and musical theater productions. He is the Music Director for the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Oklahoma Haydn Festival. A well-known string pedagogue, and clinician, he has conducted numerous all-state and all region orchestras, and he has been the Director of Strings at the Inspiration Point Summer Music Camp in Eureka Springs, Arkansas since 1999. Dr. Waddelow has expertise in the early symphonies of Joseph Haydn, string pedagogy, public school orchestra education, and early American musical theater. Previous appointments include the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra, Lubbock Youth Symphony, Lubbock Moonlight Musicals, and Texas Tech University.

Jim Waddelow holds a Doctor of Music Arts from Texas Tech University, a Master of Music degree from the University of Central Oklahoma, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Central Oklahoma.

SEAN REED – SECOND JAZZ BAND Dr. Sean Reed serves as Assistant Professor of Trombone, Euphonium and Jazz Ensembles at Arkansas Tech University, and is a performer who enjoys an international reputation as a trombonist and an educator of Classical, Jazz and Contemporary music. He has held positions in the Thailand Philharmonic, the Israeli Symphony Orchestra, Rishon LeZion, the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Lyric Opera, the Spoleto-Italy Festival Orchestra, the Victoria Bach Festival, Brass-Arts Bangkok, the Brooklyn Brass Quintet and the NOVUS trombone quartet. Reed has also performed with the Arkansas Symphony, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, the Siam Philharmonic, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Israeli Chamber Orchestra, the Austin Symphony, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Rene Fleming, Red Rodney, Duffey Jackson, Steve Houghton, Bob Mintzer, Marvin Stamm, Dave Steinmeyer, Doug Flutie, Frankie Vallie, Freddie Cole, Maria Sneider, Bobby McFerrin, Teo Macero, Bob Sneider, Tim Hagan, Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Lennie Picket, Alaria, Alarm Will Sound, and the Bangkok Brass Quintet. Reed has performed at the International Trombone Festival, the Eastern Trombone Workshop, the Kennedy Center and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Reed has performed in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Thailand, Israel, Singapore, China, Vietnam, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Austria, France, and Italy.

Reed holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music, a Master of Music degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

CHRIS VADALA – FIRST JAZZ BAND One of the country's foremost woodwind artists, Chris Vadala is in demand as a jazz/classical performer and educator. He has appeared on more than 100 recordings to date, as well as innumerable jingle sessions, film and TV scores, performing on all the saxophones, flutes, and clarinets. A native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he graduated from the Eastman School of Music, earning the honor of the Performer's Certificate in saxophone as well as a B.M. in Music Education, received an M.A. in clarinet from Connecticut College, and pursued postgraduate study in woodwinds at Eastman. Professor Vadala is the Director of Jazz Studies and Saxophone Professor at the University of Maryland. He was recognized by the UMD as a Distinguished Scholar Teacher in 2010. Previous academic appointments include teaching studio woodwinds and conducting jazz ensembles at Connecticut College, Montgomery College, Hampton University, Prince George's Community College and Mount Vernon College, as well as Visiting Professor of Saxophone at the Eastman School of Music, 1995 and 2001.

Mr. Vadala's performing career has been highlighted by a long tenure as standout woodwind artist with the Internationally recognized Chuck Mangione Quartet, which included performances in all 50 states, Canada, Australia, Japan, Phillipines, China, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, England, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, and Switzerland, and performing credits on five gold and two platinum albums, plus two Grammy, one Emmy, one Georgie (AGVA) and one Golden Globe Award. In addition, he has performed and/or recorded with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Chick Corea, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Placido Domingo, Sarah Vaughn, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Henry Mancini, Doc Severinsen, Phil Woods, Joe Lovano, and many others.

As one of the Selmer Company's most requested clinicians, Mr. Vadala travels worldwide, performing with and conducting student and professional jazz ensembles, symphonic bands, and orchestras. Within the past six years alone, Mr. Vadala has appeared with over 200 groups across the nation and Canada, and has conducted 48 All-State, as well as numerous All-County and All-District Jazz Ensembles. He served three terms as President of the Maryland Unit of the International Association for Jazz Education, was a permanent member of its Executive Board (College Faculty Representative), and Woodwind Representative to the International Resource Team.

Mr. Vadala's column on woodwind doubling appeared regularly in the Saxophone Journal for over ten years, and he has authored articles for many other magazines. A Downbeat magazine poll finalist in four categories and the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Study grant, he has published a number of original compositions and arrangements (Medici Music & Cimarron Music Press). His book, Improve Your Doubling (Dorn Productions) is acclaimed as a valuable addition to woodwind literature. DR. BRIAN RUSSELL – MALE CHORUS Dr. Brian Russell is choral director at the brand new Stewarts Creek High School in Smyrna, TN, where he directs five choirs, serves as Chair of the Department of Fine Arts, and is the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year. Prior to his appointment at Stewarts Creek, Dr. Russell held faculty positions at Illinois Wesleyan University (Bloomington, IL) and Hobart and William Smith Colleges (Geneva, NY) and has taught for 13 years at various high schools in Middle Tennessee. He holds positions in many professional organizations, including All-State Choral Chair for the Tennessee Music Educators Association and High School Repertoire and Standards Chair for the Tennessee Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. Dr. Russell is also Music Director and Conductor of the Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra and is Resident Conductor for the Music City Baroque Orchestra, a professional ensemble in Nashville dedicated to Baroque Performance Practice. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree from Middle Tennessee State University and his Masters and Doctoral degrees in conducting from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.

DR. KAREN KENNEDY – FEMALE CHORUS Praised by the San Francisco Classical Voice for her “wizardry with voices” and named by the Honolulu Star Bulletin as “ . . . a popular and charismatic leader,” Karen Kennedy recently joined the faculty at the University of Miami as Director of Choral Studies. Previous to her appointments in Miami, she held positions as the Director of Choral Activities at the University of Hawai’i, Artistic Director of the Honolulu Symphony Chorus, and Director of Choral Studies at Towson University. In addition to her work in academics, Dr. Kennedy regularly leads festival performances in large venues, most recently in Carnegie Hall, the Mormon Tabernacle, the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, Sweden, St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican in Rome, Italy, as well as those in venues throughout England and Scotland. A popular All-State Honor Choir clinician and festival director, Dr. Kennedy maintains an active schedule of performances nationally. Upcoming performances include the All-State Choirs of North Carolina, Hawai’i, Delaware, and California, in addition to festivals in Washington D.C., Colorado, Texas, and Virginia. Dr. Kennedy has received numerous awards for teaching, including the University of Hawai`i Chancellor’s Citation for Meritorious Teaching, Arizona State University’s Manzanita “Top Prof” Award, Butler University’s Faculty Distinction Award, and is a two-time recipient of the Lawrence Township Schools Superintendent’s Award.

DR. CRAIG JESSOP – MIXED CHOIR Dr. Craig Jessop is Professor of Music and the founding Dean for the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University. These appointments follow Dr. Jessop’s distinguished tenure as music director of the world famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Head of the Department of Music at Utah State. He is the founder and Music Director of the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra and has served as the music director of the Carnegie Hall National High School Choral Festival sponsored by the Weill Institute of Music at Carnegie Hall. Prior to his appointment with the Tabernacle Choir, Dr. Jessop was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force music programs, where he served as director of the U.S. Air Force Singing Sergeants in Washington, D.C. (1980-1987); as commander and conductor of the Band of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe at Ramstein, Germany (1987-1991); and as commander and conductor of the Air Combat Command Heartland of America Band (1991-1995). He has also been music director of the Maryland Choral Society, the Rhineland-Pfalz International Choir of Germany and the Omaha Symphonic Chorus. Dr. Jessop has a Bachelor of Science from Utah State University, 1973; Master of Arts from Brigham Young University, 1976; and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from Stanford University, 1980. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the cultural life of Utah, Dr. Jessop received the 2014 Governor’s Mansion Performing Artist Award bestowed by Governor Gary Herbert, Governor of the State of Utah. In 2013 he received the prestigious Madeleine Award for distinguished service to the Arts and Humanities by the Madeleine Arts and Humanities Council and in 2012 he was awarded the Utah National Guard’s Minuteman Award for service to the State of Utah. Under his direction, the Tabernacle Choir received numerous awards, including the coveted National Medal of Arts in a ceremony at the White House. He has recorded over 15 CDs on the Telarc and MTC labels with the Choir and in 2008 received a Grammy nomination for his work with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. At the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Dr. Jessop conducted the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony, working with world-renowned artists Sting and Yo-Yo Ma, and composers John Williams and Michael Kamen. Other artists with whom he has collaborated include Renée Fleming, Frederica von Stade, Bryn Terfel, Audra McDonald, The King’s Singers, Angela Lansbury, Claire Bloom, Walter Cronkite, and Charles Osgood. In 2003, Dr. Jessop conducted the choir and prepared the singers for a performance of A German Requiem at the prestigious Tanglewood Festival with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Rafael Frübeck de Burgos. A much sought-after guest conductor, Dr. Jessop has been on the American choral scene for more than three decades. His tenure as Music Director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and as director of the United States Air Force Singing Sergeants in Washington D.C. has taken him to the most prestigious concert halls of the nation and around the world including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Royal Albert Hall in London and throughout Europe and Asia. In 2013 Dr. Jessop was selected by the American Choral Directors Association to conduct the monumental Benjamin Britten War Requiem with the Dallas Symphony Chorus and Orchestra at their national convention, the fourth time in his career to conduct at the national ACDA conventions. He is also a frequent guest conductor at the prestigious Berkshire Choral Festival in Massachusetts. In addition to his work as a conductor, Dr. Jessop has been active as a baritone vocalist, first as a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and later with the choirs of Helmuth Rilling and John Rutter and with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers. He is a previous winner of the Metropolitan Opera regional auditions and San Francisco Opera auditions, and has participated in the Merola Opera training program of the San Francisco Opera. He lives in the peaceful setting of the northern Utah valley of Cache County with his wife RaNae. They are the parents of four children and have seven wonderful grandsons.

JOHN JETER – ORCHESTRA

John Jeter is the Music Director and Conductor of the Fort Smith Symphony (Arkansas), a position he has held for eighteen seasons. He is the recipient of the American Symphony Orchestra League 2002 Helen M. Thompson Award. This national award “in recognition of outstanding artistic leadership” is presented to one “early career” music director in the United States every two years. Mr. Jeter has been given The Mayor’s Achievement Award presented by the City of Fort Smith “for His Outstanding Talents in the Field of Music” and in 2005, the Mayor’s Civic Center Award for the Performing Arts. Most recently, Mr. Jeter is the recipient of the 2012 Governor’s Arts Award “Individual Artist Award.” Mr. Jeter has created numerous new ensembles, projects and programs including the Fort Smith Symphony String Quartet, composer-in-residence program, guest artists in the schools program and “Earquake™” concerts for sixth grade students employing multi-media and large symphony orchestra. His efforts have led to the Fort Smith Symphony’s three international recordings on Naxos, the world’s largest classical recording label as well as a feature length film festival documentary about the Symphony called “Extreme Orchestra.” Mr. Jeter was co-host of “Conductor’s Choice” on KUAF National Public Radio for twelve years and co-producer of the Symphony’s television and radio commercials. His media presence in the community has included a weekly radio talk show and “Addy” Award winning “Custom Classics” infomercials (over 400) on Clear Channel, Cumulus and KTCS radio. Mr. Jeter is also seen on televised music infomercials produced by CoxMedia and KFSM Channel 5.

Mr. Jeter has held conducting positions with the Indianapolis Symphony, North Arkansas Symphony, Greater Indianapolis Youth Symphony, Purdue University, University of Tulsa and University of Oklahoma. He has conducted numerous orchestras in the United States and Europe. These include the Wichita Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony (SC), Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony, Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MO), Illinois Chamber Symphony and the West Bohemian Symphony (Czech Republic). He has participated in American Symphony Orchestra League Conducting Workshops in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. He is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the Hartt School of Music with a degree in Music Theory and Piano and graduated with distinction from Butler University’s Jordan College of Fine Arts with a master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting.

DR. DANIEL SCHMIDT – CONCERT BAND Dr. Daniel J. Schmidt is Professor of Bands at Northern Arizona University. Prior to this appointment, he was director of bands and professor of saxophone and double reeds at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. College ensembles under his direction have received international reputations, touring Europe, performing at various conventions including the CBDNA Regional Conventions in 2002, 2006, and 2010 as well as a variety of state MENC conventions. The NAU Wind Symphony has made promotional recordings for Warner Bros. Music and Carl Fischer Music. Prior to Dr. Schmidt’s appointment at Mars Hill College, he was the associate director of bands at Syracuse University, directing the 230-piece “Pride of the Orange” marching band and various concert and pep bands. Dr. Schmidt received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Florida State University and was appointed director of bands at Hudson High School in Pasco County, Florida, in 1987. He is the first person to receive the Master of Music in wind conducting from the University of North Texas while emphasizing saxophone performance and musicology (1993). Dr. Schmidt is also the first person to receive the Doctorate of Musical Arts in wind conducting from the University of Kentucky (2000). Dr. Schmidt was the recipient of a Fulbright Award to Australia in 1993, but refused this opportunity to join the Syracuse University faculty. He has served as clinician and adjudicator throughout the country. He is the Primary Conductor and Director of Scholarly Publications for Carl Fischer Music of New York. Projects have included acting as the coordinating editor for the recent series of band scores entitled Percy Grainger: The Critical Edition. He is the author of My First Klosé, My First Wagner, My First Universal Method, My First Barrett, and My First Weissenborn, five intermediate lesson workbooks for woodwinds, and is the co-author of Protocol: A Guide to the Collegiate Audition Process for trumpet, clarinet, trombone, saxophone, and flute. He is the conductor of the Trade Winds, a professional ensemble that does promotional recordings of new music for Carl Fischer and Wingert-Jones since 2002. Dr. Schmidt is also a performing artist for the Yamaha Corporation of America and is the Arizona State Chair and Vice-President of the Western Region for the College Band Directors National Association.

DR. WILLIAM CLARK – SYMPHONIC BAND Dr. William Clark is a native of Prescott Arkansas and a graduate of Prescott High School. Dr. Clark earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Henderson State Teachers College, a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He was Director of Bands at Arkadelphia, Arkansas from 1959-1970, at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi from 1972-1985, at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico from 1985-1995. He served as Music Department Head at New Mexico State from 1991-2001, and is currently Conductor and Music Director of the Mesilla Valley Concert Band which he founded in 1986. During Clark's tenure as department head, the number of music majors at NMSU more than doubled and full-time flute and percussion instructors, along with adjunct oboe and bassoon instructors, were added to the faculty. Dr. Clark was selected Las Cruces Citizen of the Year and New Mexico Music Educator of the Year in 1989, and received the Julie Papen Arts Patron Award in 1996. Clark will remain on the NMSU music department faculty as a part-time instructor. Dr. Clark is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu International, American School Band Directors Association, and the New Mexico Music Educators Association. He maintains an active participation with involvement of young people and is in demand as clinician and guest conductor throughout the United States. Today just prior to the Wind Symphony performance, he will be inducted into the Arkansas Bandmasters Hall of Fame, sponsored by the Omicron Chapter of International Phi Beta Mu.

DR. STEVEN GRIMO – WIND SYMPHONY Dr. Steven Grimo, D.M.A., is a native of Bristol, RI and comes from Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he served as the Music Ministries Department Director. He was active in prison fellowship as a certified volunteer counselor and bible studies instructor for the Colorado Department of Corrections. He began his career in music as a percussionist, attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he earned a BME in Music Education and a BA Percussion Performance. Upon graduation, Steve began his teaching career as an elementary and junior high school music director for the Newton, MA public schools and the Auburn, MA pubic schools (1978-1980). He later became Director of Instrumental Music at Wachusett Regional High School in Holden, Massachusetts, (1980-85) where he received the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence, and the Stanbury Award from the American School Band Directors Association. His success in commissioning new works and receiving outstanding performance ratings, garnered invitations as a guest conductor and clinician throughout New England. During those years, his early commission projects included, William Kraft, Vaclav Nelhybel, Daniel Pinkham, and Elliot Del Borgo. During his tenure teaching in Massachusetts, he received his Masters of Music degree in Wind Ensemble Conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Frank Battisti. He founded the East Bay Association for the Arts in Bristol Rhode Island, where his grant writing and fundraising tenacity, established an organization, whose heritage recently celebrated their 30th anniversary season. During this time, he was also an instructor at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division teaching percussion and conducting the Junior Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble, another organization which he founded , and today is an outstanding youth wind ensemble, dedicated to training 7-9th grade instrumentalists throughout the state of Massachusetts. Steven Grimo, served 22 years from 1986-2007 in the United States Air Force after a successful teaching career in New England from 1976-1986. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel serving with the USAF Bands and Music Branch as a Commander & Music Director for The USAF Academy Band, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During his time in the USAF, he published works for band and percussion and commissioned over 30 new works for winds. His organizations received the George S Howard Award for Excellence and he was awarded the Texas Bandmasters Association Citation of Excellence multiple times, and recorded more than 30 recording projects. His guest conducting brought him to countless festival performances, All States, Universities and Colleges throughout the United States and abroad. He was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in May of 1992. He has numerous published and commissioned works to his credit and is an internationally active guest conductor and clinician. As a music director, conductor and producer, he has lectured and conducted professional and collegiate organizations throughout the world. In 2006 he was inducted into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association.
