AzVMA Pet Resource Directory 1
Hello Animal Lovers,
One of the endearing parts of being a pet owner is the willingness to go to great lengths to show how much we care for ouranimal companions. Pets are loyal without demanding the same. They are happy and joyful over very simple things that we ourselves often take for granted, such as a walk, a toy, or food. They are the definition of the most literal form of unconditionallove. We, as pet owners, benefit from the relationship we have with our furry and feathery friends. It has been shown there aremedical and psychological benefits from pet ownership. For example, pets lower stress levels that lead to conditions such asheart disease and depression.
As a veterinarian and pet owner, I know the importance of proper diagnoses and treatments when my pet gets sick. The veterinary profession has made great strides over the last few decades in the treatment and care of animals, so I encourageeveryone who owns an animal to provide them with necessary veterinary care. Annual health checks that include vaccinationsand blood tests are encouraged to prevent diseases that could potentially kill them. There are times when veterinary carerequires surgery or intense medical management, and your veterinary team is there to provide whatever is necessary to assureyour animal's recovery. Of course, spaying and neutering is critical as the continued increase in unwanted animals is a seriousconcern.
The Arizona Veterinary Medical Association is providing you, the pet owner, this valuable guide to help you find the resourcesneeded to keep your beloved pet healthy. You know your pet better than anyone else, and your veterinarian knows how to keepyour pet healthy better than anyone else. We encourage you to establish a relationship with your veterinarian and their staff, and to work as a team to keep your pet happy and help them live a longer life. This is the least we can do to repay those companions who give us so much and ask so little in return.

DESERT DANGERS!
HEATSTROKE/STRESSHeatstroke in pets is a major problem in Arizona.Heatstroke occurs when pets are exposed to hightemperatures. Can result in collapse, shock andsometimes death. Animals require shade and cool
water to help maintain normal body temperature. Ifyou suspect heatstroke, apply cool water to the
entire animal and call your veterinarian immediately.
POOLSWatch your pets around water and make surethey know how to get out of the pool. Theycan tire quickly, and even though they knowwhere the pool steps are, may not be able toget to them. Pool covers can seem like solidground to a pet until they step on it. Fencingand supervision are important for your pet’s
safety. Ask your veterinarian about emergency first aid and animal CPR classes.
RATTLESNAKES13 species of rattlesnakes live in Arizona, more than any other state. Daytime activity is most likely
March to May. During hot summer months they are more active at night and spend the day in the shade, although you may see one in the daytime when it’s cloudy. If your pet suffers a snakebite, they need emergency care immediately. Rattlesnake-proofing classes are available and can be effective in some
cases. Ask your veterinarian for more information.
SPIDERSLike scorpion stings, the severity can dependon several factors. Symptoms can include:swelling at the site of the bite or face,
difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness, highfever, trembling, diarrhea, vomiting. If yourpet has severe facial swelling, is experiencingdifficulty breathing, or is in severe distress, seek immediate emergency veterinary care.
TOAD POISONINGThe Colorado River Toad (Bufo Alvarious),
commonly found in Arizona, can pose a threat toyour pets. Pets are poisoned when they lick orbite it. Signs of exposure: foaming, drooling, seizures, collapse, and sometimes death. If apet is observed playing with a toad, rapid
intervention by pet owner is necessary. Thefirst step is to wash the pet’s mouth thoroughly
with water. It is then necessary to seek emergency veterinary care as soon as possible.
SCORPIONSCats and dogs will respond differently dueto the severity and toxicity of the sting
based on age, weight, physical condition andtype of scorpion. Common symptoms caninclude: pain, drooling, tremors, difficultybreathing and possible paralysis. The besttreatment for a scorpion sting is to seekimmediate emergency veterinary care.
Before reaching your veterinarian, restrictmovement to make an effort to keep your
pet calm and still.
CACTUS INJURIESCactus are almost everywhere in Arizona. Keep your
pet calm if they collide with a cactus. Removethorns with a comb or needle-nose pliers. Caution:removal is painful. Don’t allow pets or horses to
chew the cactus spines. Veterinary assistance maybe required to remove the cactus needles.
Be prepared.... develop an emergency plan with your veterinarian.
Any of these dangers may require emergency care.

When you're teaching children about dog bite prevention and how to be safe around dogs, keep it simple.• Avoid unknown dogs• When the owner is with their dog, always ask the owner for permission to pet
their dog• Teach children to avoid escalating the situation by yelling, running, hitting or
making sudden movements toward the dog• Teach children that if a dog goes to bed or to his/her crate, don’t bother
them• Teach children that the dog has to want to play with them and when the dog
leaves, it will return for more play if it feels like it• Teach kids never to tease dogs by taking their toys, food or treats, or by pretending to hit or kick• Teach kids to never pull a dog’s ears or tail, climb on or try to ride dogs• Keep dogs out of infant’s and young children’s rooms unless there is direct and constant supervision• Report stray dogs or dogs that frequently get loose in your neighborhood• Tell children to leave the dog alone when it’s asleep or eating

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR)? A: Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship, or VCPR for short, exists when your veterinarian has examined yourpet and knows your pet well enough to be able to diagnose and treat any medical conditions your animal develops.Your part of the VCPR is allowing your veterinarian to take responsibility for making clinical judgments about yourpet's health, asking questions to make sure you understand, and following your veterinarian's instructions. Yourveterinarian's part of the VCPR involves making those judgments; accepting the responsibility for providing yourpet with medical care; keeping a written record of your pet's medical care; advising you about the benefits andrisks of different treatment options; providing oversight of treatment, compliance (your follow-through on theirrecommendations) and outcome; and helping you know how to get emergency care for your pet if the need shouldarise.
Q: Why should I spay or neuter my pet?A: Let’s do the math. One cat will produce kittens, those kittens will mature and produce more kittens, and thosekittens will have litters of even more kittens. In 7 years this one cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats.Dogs don’t reproduce as often as cats, but the numbers are still staggering. One dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years. *Source: Humane Society of the United StatesThere are also benefits for your pet. In females it protects them from several health problems such as uterineinfections, uterine or breast cancer, or complications associated with pregnancy. It also eliminates heat cyclesand reduces negative behaviors associated with heat cycles and mating instinct. Neutering male dogs and cats canhave a calming effect. It reduces negative behaviors and aggressiveness associated with the mating instinct. Theyare less likely to roam in search of a mate reducing their chances of injury or getting lost.
Q: Why should I microchip my pet?A: Despite your best efforts, accidents can happen. Someone leaves a door ajar, an intrepid pooch digs under afence, and your best intentions go awry: Your pet escapes and gets lost. If he's wearing a collar and identificationtag, chances are good that you’ll get him back. But what if the collar comes off? To protect their pets, many owners turn to technology, in the form of identification microchips implanted in their pets. Microchips are tinytransponders, about the size of a grain of rice, that can be implanted under your pet's skin by many veterinariansand animal shelters; some shelters implant one in all pets they place. *Source: Humane Society of the UnitedStates
Q: Does my pet really need an annual examination and vaccinations?A: It is in the best interest of your pet to get a routine checkup plus all the recommended vaccines so that yourpet may remain healthy and happy. The examination by the veterinarian is particularly important because our petscannot “tell” us about the early development of a disease or problem which the veterinarian may be able to diagnose. In fact, this may be the least expensive “insurance” you can buy. Early detection of problems and use ofpreventative care will both protect your pet’s health and save you money over the long run. Vaccines are important to prevent disease, pain, suffering, and death. Some pet owners intending to “save” money by skippingvaccinations and/or an exam end up spending far more in treating their pet for a disease which could have beenprevented and may be fatal.
Q: Why does my pet need dental care?A: Just like humans, your pet needs dental care too. Your veterinarian can clean, polish, and take X-rays of yourpets teeth; and extract and repair them when necessary for a healthy smile. Your veterinarian can examine yourpet’s teeth below the gumline where most dental disease occurs and may be hiding. Infected gums and teeth canlead to problems with internal organs and joints. A professional dental examination must be conducted with anesthesia by a licensed veterinarian.

Foods
Many foods are perfectly safe for humans, but could be harmful or potentially deadly to pets. To be safe, keep the following food items out of your pet’s menu:• Coffee grounds• Fatty foods• Tea• Chocolate• Avocado• Alcohol• Yeast dough• Grapes/raisins• Salt• Macadamia nuts• Onions• Garlic• Any products containing xylitol (an artificial sweetener)
Medications
Medications that treat human medical conditions can make pets very sick. Never give your pet any medication, including over-the-counter medications, unless directed by your veterinarian. As a rule, all medicines should be tightly closed and stored securely and away from pets. Medications that pose higher risk include:• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen• Acetaminophen• Diet Pills/Vitamins• Cold Medicines• Antihistamines• Prescription Drugs• Antidepressants
• Make sure your pets – cats and dogs alike – have identification tags with up-to-date information• If your pets aren’t already microchipped, talk with your veterinarian about microchipping. This simple
procedure can greatly improve your chances of getting your pets back if they become lost• Make sure the environment is safe and secure• Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks display, parades and other gatherings.
Unfamiliar places and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there’s great risk of pets becoming spooked and running away
• Keep horses and livestock in safely fenced areas and as far from the excitement and noise as possible• If you’re hosting guests, ask them to help keep an eye on your pets to make sure they don’t escape• Avoid the urge to feed your pets table scraps or other foods intended for people, like candy and
chocolate• Remember that too much sun and heat (and humidity!) can be dangerous to pets. Keep them inside
when it’s extremely hot/humid• Never leave your pet in your car when it’s warm outside, it’s illegal!• If you’re travelling out of town for the holiday, consider leaving your pets at home with a pet sitter or
boarding them in a kennel• Check your yard for debris after parties and celebrations

Diseases of Note
RabiesRabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus thatattacks the nervous system. The virus is secretedin saliva and is usually transmitted to people andanimals by a bite from an infected animal. Lesscommonly, rabies can be transmitted when salivafrom a rabid animal comes in contact with an opencut on the skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth of aperson or animal. Once the outward signs of thedisease appear, rabies is nearly always fatal.Animals with rabies may show a variety of signs, including fearfulness, aggression, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, staggering, paralysisand seizures. Rabies is entirely preventablethrough vaccination.
Valley FeverValley fever is caused by a soil-borne fungus thatlives in parts of the southwestern United States.Dogs and humans are more likely to be affectedthan cats. The fungus is inhaled through dust orwhile digging and begins to grow in the lungs whereit may cause a low-grade fever and cough. A veterinarian can test for this disease and treatment is usually successful.
LeptospirosisA bacterial disease that can affect people and animals, including dogs. The bacteria that causesleptospirosis is spread in the urine of infected animals, including rodents, wildlife, pets, and livestock. People and dogs can be infected throughcontact with infected urine or water or wet soilcontaminated with urine. Symptoms may vary andcan include flu-like symptoms and in severe casesmay result in liver or kidney failure. A veterinariancan test for this disease and there is a vaccineavailable.
Canine InfluenzaCanine influenza (CI, or dog flu) is caused by thecanine influenza virus (CIV). It is highly contagiousand easily spread from infected dogs to other dogsby direct contact, nasal secretions (through barking, coughing or sneezing), contaminatedobjects (kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes), and by people moving betweeninfected and uninfected dogs. Heatstroke
Heatstroke in pets is a major problem in Arizona. Heatstroke occurs when pets are exposed to high temperatures. Animals require shade and cool water to help maintain normal body temperature. They relyon two cooling mechanisms (panting and sweating through the footpads) as well.
One of the most frequent places for heatstroke to occur is in a parked car. With poor ventilation, thetemperature rises quickly and your pet is not able to keep cool. Your pet will begin to breathe rapidly trying to cool off. The body temperature can rise 5-10 degrees. Vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures oftenfollow, and death can occur within minutes.
If you suspect heatstroke, apply cool water to the entire animal and call your veterinarian immediately.
Signs of Heat Stress
Seek emergency veterinary care if you observe any of these signs:• Anxiousness• Excessive panting• Restlessness• Excessive drooling• Unsteadiness• Abnormal gum and tongue color• Collapse
8 Things You Can Do to Protect Your Dog in the Summer
1. Never, ever leave your dog in the car; at 95 degrees outside, inside the car after 30 minutes temperatures can reach over 125 degrees, and about 140 degrees after 60 minutes
2. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water
3. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside
4. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day
5. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like asphalt) because it can burn your dog's paws
6. If you think it's hot outside, it's even hotter for your pet – make sure your pet has a means of cooling off
7. Keep your dog free of external parasites (fleas, ticks) and heartworms – consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet
8. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your veterinarian first to see if it's appropriate for your pet), and apply sunscreen to your dog's skin if she or he has a thin coat
Arizona HB 2494 was passed on May 11, 2017 as a measure aimed to end hot-car deaths and allows goodSamaritans to take action without risk of civil liability if they rescue a child or a pet from a hot car.

1. Ask yourself if taking your pet with you is the right thing to do (for your pet and your family). Ifthe answer is "no," then make suitable arrangements (pet sitter, boarding kennel, etc.) for your pet. If the answer is "yes," then plan, plan, plan!
2. Make sure your pet will be welcome where you're heading – this includes any stops you may make along the way, as well as your final destination.
3. If you're crossing state lines during your travel, you need a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (also called a health certificate). You'll need to get it within 10 days of when you plan to travel. Your veterinarian will examine your pet to make sure it doesn't have any signs of infectious disease and that it has the appropriate vaccinations (e.g., rabies). This certificate can't be legallyissued without a veterinary exam, so please don't ask your veterinarian to break the law.
4. Make sure you know how you can find a veterinarian quickly if there's an emergency on the way toor after you've reached your destination. Online veterinary clinic locators can help you, including the American Animal Hospital Association's search and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society's emergency clinic directory.
5. Prior to travel, make sure your pet is properly identified in case they become lost. Your pet should be wearing a collar with an ID tag (with accurate information!). Microchips provide permanent identification and improve your chances of getting your pet returned to you, but make sure you keep your registration information up to date.
6. Properly restrain your pet with an appropriately fitted harness or in a carrier of the appropriate size. "Appropriate size" means that they can lay down, stand up and turn around, but it's not so big that they will be thrown around inside the carrier in case of a sudden stop or a collision. No heads or bodies hanging out the windows, please, and certainly no pets in laps! That's dangerous...for everyone.
7. Make sure your pet is accustomed to whatever restraint you plan to use BEFORE your trip. Remember that road trips can be a little stressful on your pet. If your pet isn't already used to the harness or carrier, that's an added stress.
8. When traveling with your dog(s), make frequent stops to allow it/them to go to the bathroom, stretch their legs and get some mental stimulation from sniffing around and checking things out.
9. Take adequate food and water for the trip. Offer your pet water at each stop, and try to keep your pet's feeding schedule as close to normal as possible.
10. When traveling, keep a current picture of your pet with you so you can easily make "lost" posters and/or use the picture to help identify your pet if it becomes lost.
11. Make sure you take your pet's medications with you, including any preventives (heartworm, flea and tick) that might be due while you're traveling.

End-of-life Care for your Pet
End-of-life care for pets focuses on providing the best quality of life possible for a pet with a terminaldisease or condition until the pet dies or is euthanized. End-of-life care also helps you as a pet owner byproviding you time to make decisions and adjust to the coming loss of your companion. The care is tailoredto the needs of both you and your pet. Ask your veterinarian about hospice care.
A veterinary end-of-life care service typically includes on-call availability of the veterinarian to provideurgent care as needed; extended appointments including counseling and support for decision-making; in-home care; medications and other therapies administered to relieve discomfort, stress and pain;euthanasia options tailored to your pet's needs (which may include in-home euthanasia); and pet losssupport/grief counseling.
If your regular veterinary team does not offer a particular service in which you are interested (such asin-home euthanasia), they likely can refer you to a colleague who does offer the service. Don't hesitate toask about further options.
Did you know that you can purchase health insurance for your pet? Having insurancegives you peace of mind, helps avoid unexpected bills and makes it easier to budget foryour pet’s care. There are many companies that offer a variety of plans to fit everybudget. You can find more information by searching the internet for “Pet Insurance.”?
