Term 6 week 4 – This week your foundation subject learning will follow the
theme of:
‘Riveting Roald Dahl’
This week we will be doing fun and exciting learning tasks that are inspired by
the brilliant characters and stories created by Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl was an
author who wrote some of the best books for children ever written. You might
have read or heard of ‘The Enormous Crocodile’, ‘The Giraffe, the Pelly and me’,
‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’, ‘The BFG’ or ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’,
which are just a few of his fantastic books. His stories are magical and so
amazing that many of them have been turned into films or animations. Enjoy
delving into the wonderful world of Roald Dahl and get ready to use your
imagination.

MY BIG FRIENDLY GIANT
In many stories a giant is something to be scared. Some of the giants in
Roald Dahl’s book ‘The BFG’ are a little scary, but the main character is a
friendly man, who just happens to be a giant.
Here is a picture and description of the BFG from Roald Dahl’s book.
He had truly enormous ears. Each
one was as big as the wheel of a
truck and he seemed to be able to
move them inwards and outwards
from his head as he wished.
Today, your task is to create your own Big Friendly Giant. You must draw a picture and
describe the giant in the space below. Your giant could be a boy or a girl, old or young, have
loads of hair or have no hair – it is totally up to you! There is just one thing you must
remember when creating your giant – they MUST be FRIENDLY.

MAGICAL MARVELLOUS MEDICINE
One of Roald Dahl’s books is about a boy called George, who was fed up with his
grumpy, unkind Grandma and so he decided to swap her normal medicine for
something he invented himself. He used strange and interesting things in his
medicine and he hoped each ingredient would have a different effect on his
Grandma. And it did…
Here is George using bottles
of perfume, toothpaste, hair
remover, animal medicine,
brown paint and lots of
other crazy things to make
his medicine for Grandma.
Then he gives Grandma
his marvellous medicine.
This is what happens to Grandma after she has swallowed George’s marvellous medicine.
For your first task today, you are going to decide on a nasty character (like Grandma) who you
are going to give your medicine to. You need to draw them and list words that describe them
and the disgusting and terrible things that they do in the table below.
Picture of your nasty character Words that describe
them
Now you need to decide on 5 strange ingredients for your marvellous medicine. You need to
write what each medicine ingredient is and draw what it looks like – this could be a pill, a
bottle of something or a box of something. Next to each ingredient you are going to describe
what magical things you want the ingredient to do to your nasty character – make this as
funny, crazy, ridiculous and hideous as you like!
Ingredient name and picture Description of what the ingredient will
do to your nasty character
Finally, draw a picture of what your nasty character looks like after they have taken your
magical medicine. You could draw more than one picture to show the different effects of the
medicine, like the ones shown of Grandma. Or you could just draw one big picture of the end
result on your nasty, disgusting, terrible character.
Additional activities for children at home - Once you have finished, you could ask a grown up if
they would help you make your Marvellous Medicine. Remember DO NOT taste it – making
it is just for fun!!!

ENORMOUS CROCODILE TRAP
Today you are going to design a trap for a
crocodile, but not just any crocodile…
Your trap will be for Roald Dahl’s
ENORMOUS CROCODILE.
Before you start designing, read through some of these extracts from Roald Dahl’s book to
learn more about this beastly character.
Humpy-Rumpy the hippo
Trunky the elephant
Muggle-Wump the monkey
The Roly-Poly bird
Some of what the characters have said in the extracts on the previous page might give you
some ideas of what you could have in your crocodile trap, but you might have lots of others.
Record your ideas for your crocodile trap, by answering the questions on this ideas web.
Crocodile trap
ideas web
What materials and tools could you
use to make your crocodile trap?
How might your trap work?
How big will your trap be? What shape could your trap be?
Where would you put
your crocodile trap?
Is your trap going to
be hidden or
disguised?
Now you have thought about your ideas carefully for your crocodile trap, you need to draw a
picture of your incredible Enormous Crocodile trap.
Additional activities for children at home - Once you have finished your design you could make a
model of your trap out of cardboard and reusable materials from your recycling! If you make
any traps, send pictures of them into your teachers – we would love to see them!

PICTURE PERFECT
Below is one of the front covers for a book called ‘James and the Giant Peach’ by Roald Dahl.
The book is about a boy who meets a mysterious man in his garden who gives him a bag of
magical glowing crystals. James accidentally trips up, spilling the magical objects on the
ground under a peach tree. The crystals cause a peach on the tree to grow and GROW and
GROWWW!!! It becomes giant, as do some of the mini-beasts living inside the peach. The
peach becomes so big that James can climb inside and together with his new massive bug
friends he goes on an adventure when the peach rolls off of a cliff and floats away on the
ocean.
The front cover of this book and most of the pictures in Roald Dahl’s books are drawn by a
fabulous artist called Quentin Blake. Here are close up pictures of James and his big bug
friends drawn by Quentin Blake.
Centipede
James and
Ladybird
Old Green Grasshopper
Miss Spider
Earthworm
Glow-worm
Silkworm
If you look at the pictures of the characters, Quentin Blake always outlines features using
black and uses colour to bring them to life. Your task today is to draw/paint a picture in this
style. You can either try to recreate the front cover of the book (on the previous page), choose
one of the characters and draw a much bigger version of them, or create your own bug
character who could join James and his friends on their adventure. You have been set a 2Do
on Purple Mash to try and create your piece of art using 2Paint, or there is a space below for
you to do your drawing/picture.
Optional – instead of drawing:
Describe one of the characters or imagine what is happening in the front cover picture and
describe that.
