Improvements in vehicle efficiency, the implementation of new drive-lines, and improved efficiency oftransport systems have so far provedinsufficient in our efforts in proceed-ing towards sustainable transport andlogistics systems. The difficult taskwe face is to create the potential forsustainable, safe transport systems and,

Mobility of people and gods is a fundamental part of the modern societyand generates tremendous economic and social value. However, growingtransport volumes pose challenges such as climate change, environmentalpollution and trafc accidents.

at the same time, increase effective-ness and efficiency. Future develop-ment cannot be conducted by a singleindustrial, public or academic actor.Mitigating climate impact and reducingrisks in the transport sector are seriouschallenges that require collaborationbetween various stakeholders, includ-ing business and industry agents andthe society as a whole. To approachthe problems associated with transportdevelopment there is a need to simul-taneously address several levels in andperspectives on the transport system, taking into consideration the interac-tion of vehicles and vessels, networksof infrastructures and the demandand supply of transport and logisticsservices.

Well-functioning transport systems are essentialfor the effectiveness and efficiency of logisticssystems and thereby the competitiveness of firms as wellas mobility for people and quality of life.

Three active fields have been identified to developresearch, education and innovation: Demand fortransport services aiming at understanding anddeveloping the design and organisation of supply, production and distribution networks; Supply oftransport and logistics services aiming at finding waysto reduce traffic while transport work is increasing;and Interplay and interfaces between supply anddemand of transport services aiming at developingmore effective solutions by considering the interplayand interfaces between demand and supply oftransport services.

A growing awareness of the relationship betweentransport efficiency and the environmentalconsequences of different logistics and transportsolutions also spurs the development of the research.

weden has historically taken a scientific approachtowards traffic safety and was the first country to

express a Vision Zero (no fatalities or severe injuriesin traffic accidents) thus making safety a systemicissue. Traffic safety resea rch encompasses efforts toimprove the understanding of real traffic environ-ments, of countermeasures to avoid accidents and toprevent injuries, and of actions taken to mitigate theirconsequences.

Research, innovation and education are targetinghigh achievement within three active fields: Fielddata collection and analysis aiming at developinga holistic understanding of occurrence and effectsof incidents and accidents; Accident avoidanceaiming at developing new safety systems includingtechnologies crucial for new safety systems as wellas human factors and behavioural research; andInjury prevention aiming at developing strategiesfor increased crashworthiness, advanced structuresand protective systems. An important basis for allresearch is advanced methods for evaluation of safetysystems covering, computer models, simulator testing,full-scale testing and naturalistic driving studies.

Chalmers has a long scientific tradition and a setof strong research centres in this profile area,

which focuses on improving vehicles and vesselstowards better fuel economy and less environmentalimpact. All conventional transport modes are repre-sented.

Three active fields have been identified: Efficientpowertrains aiming to find sustainable solutions forhow to propel vehicles in future; Vehicle conceptdevelopment aiming at reducing propulsionresistance through vehicle design; and System aspectsof vehicles aiming at analysing factors affectingfuture generations of vehicle powertrains andconcepts.

T his ensures a flow of ideas, knowledge and vision betweeneducation, research and industry andis mutually beneficial for all involved.CATA has three aims:

Maintaining close links with industryensures that Chalmers can providestudents with the opportunity to getinvolved with cutting-edge projectsand apply the theory they have learntto real-life engineering challenges. Thiscan be project work carried out on sitewith an industrial partner in the formof a Masters thesis or an internship. It can also be guest lecturers, whoare experts in their fields, visiting

Chalmers or alternatively studentsvisiting companies for a short periodto gain a better understanding of theindustrial environment.

CATA is however not only aboutproviding students at Chalmers withaccess to industry. It is equally aboutindustry having access to the studentsand influencing the education that isundertaken. Chalmers works closelytogether with its industrial partnersto design the Masters programmesrelevant to the automotive andtransport sectors to ensure that theeducation will meet their future needs. It is also an access point from whichcurrent and relevant research can beviewed.

    CHALMERS AUTOMOTIVE ANDTRANSPORT ACADEMY

Chalmers Automotive and Transport Academy (CATA) is a joint organizedinterface between Chalmers and the automotive and transport industries, serving as a platform for contacts and forum of exchange betweenChalmers and its industrial partners.
