From the Editor Joshua Dorward, 2L
Rudyard Kipling’s If is a reservoir of guidance for the i n d e p e n d e n t l y - m i n d e d truth-seekers among us.
Encouraging readers to forego pretense and instead rely on their “heart and nerve and sinew,” Kipling preaches integrity and deci-siveness that is borne out from within each of us.
Kipling’s sermon on self-reliance is apropos given Santa Clara’s recent stumble in US News’ Best Graduate School rankings. Here is a newsflash: You are now rub-bing elbows among the un-ranked third tier.
Not unlike being slapped in the face, where the initial sting to one’s pride is quickly enveloped with emo-tion, many students aren’t quite sure how to react.
Though we are loath to admit it and more frequently openly deny it, the US News rankings are still a source of evaluating our self-worth vis-à-vis other law schools in the nation.
Like standardized tests, democracy, and pop music, the US News rankings are the product of compromise—here, it is the public’s inabil-ity to conduct satisfactory comparison research of law schools on their own. Hordes of eager college stu-dents happily contribute to the status quo by plunking down their dollars for a chance to dream about tiers and specialized programs.
While deriving any self-worth on a personal level from these rankings is plain silly, there are legitimate questions we must ask of our institution. How will this affect employment? How will this affect enrollment?
To the extent that there are real-world ramifications, how should SCU play ball?
I invite you to contribute questions to the Dean’s spe-cial Open Forum that will be held this Thursday in the Moot Court room at 4pm. Dean Polden will be present to address your con-cerns and questions. Take advantage of this opportu-nity and remember Kipling:
“If you can fill the unfor-giving minute/With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,/ Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it…”

PRO BONO OPPORTUNITY OF THE WEEK SCHOLARSHIP RENEWALS AND APPLICATIONS
2005-2006
Applications to renew your Law Faculty, Emery or Public Interest Scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year are now available. They can be picked up from Associate Dean Mary Emery’s Office, Heafey 156. The application deadline is May 20, 2005. You must turn in the applica-tion itself as well as the cover sheet (signed).
Current scholarship holders must reapply. Scholarships will not be renewed without an application. Emery schol-arships may be renewed if the academic conditions in the original award letter are met and funds are available. New Emery scholarships may be awarded to students who place in the top 10% of their class and who apply for the scholarship. Law Faculty scholarships will be re-newed if a student continues to demonstrate financial need and satisfactory academic progress. Students who do not currently have a Law Faculty scholarship may ap-ply; however, new awards are limited by the availability of funds.
Please contact Patti Hallead at [email protected] or at (408) 554-4451 if you have any questions.
