!THE BIRTHDAY SPOTLIGHT!!

Sharleen Clautero celebrated her birthday on October 3rd. She is one of our wonderful 1st grade teachers. She was born in San Francisco, CA. Her family includes her Mom, Dad, two sisters, two brother-in-laws, two nephews, two nieces, cousins, aunties, and uncles. She loves her family! Sharleen enjoys watching movies, reading, exploring the bay area and spending time with family and friends. She loves the caring Van Meter community and the hilarious things that first graders say. She loves 80’s movies (especially ones that break into song) and has a slight addiction to movie popcorn. What makes Sharleen unique? She is Filipino and a Kon Mari fan! !!Jamie Glanville celebrates her birthday on October 7th and is one of our awesome 2nd grade teachers. Jamie was born in Camarillo, California. She is married to Brian and they have a daughter, Cami (11 years old) and Marcus (9 years old). She enjoys watching her kids’ sporting events and running with her friends. Her favorite thing about Van meter is that her colleagues have a great sense of humor – lots of laughter around our campus. Jamie didn’t plan on becoming a teacher – she thought that she would own a plant nursery! !!Karen Anderson-Miller celebrates her birthday on October 9th. She is one of our great music teachers. She was born in Rockford, Illinois. Her family includes her husband, Phil, her daughter, Audrey, and Shadow, the cat. She loves to sing :-) travel and bake. She loves the students, the staff and the music room at Van Meter. Karen has Irish citizenship and she traveled to Africa in 2015. !

TRANSLATORS NEEDED!Hindi, Vietnamese, Turkish, Danish, Finnish, Dutch, Mandarin!!Volunteer adult translators are needed to help administer primary language assessments to English language learners in the district.  The language testing begins in October and takes about 15 minutes per student.  There are 1-3 students per language.   Students identify pictures of people, animals, shapes, numbers, colors, and vehicles in their home language.  The volunteer translator and English language tutor administer the assessment individually to each student.  If you can help, please contact Gail Bennett, English Language Tutor, 408-335-2116 or [email protected]

PUMPKIN PATCH: OCTOBER 30TH With your help, this year’s Pumpkin Patch will be fun for the entire family. This year’s

Pumpkin Patch will be held on Sunday October 30th from 11 am- 3 pm. The new date and time was selected to allow families to attend this event without the pressure of Friday night traffic, bedtimes and a more enjoyable family experience. As in years past, there be classroom games, bounce houses, dunk tank, petting zoo and cake walk (just to name a few). Baked goods and drinks will be sold at the Sweet Shop and lunch options will be available. Advance event and meal tickets can be found here: www.vanmeterhsc.org/pumpkin-patch Last year the Pumpkin Patch raised over $35,000 for our school. We hosted over 600 kids and estimate that the total attendance was 1,500 people throughout the evening. An event of this scale can only occur with everyone’s assistance. The more parents that step forward, the easier the job (and more fun)! So please sign up and volunteer for a 1-hour shift at your child’s classroom activity. http://lvm.ivolunteer.com/2016/pumpkinpatch_002 Don’t forget to wear your Halloween costume andvisit the Costume Contest booth! BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Do you want to help make EASY MONEY for our school community??? Don’t forget to check your store bought packaging for the Box Tops logo and clip them out. Each Box Top collected gives 10 cents directly to our school. Feel free to just send them in a baggie or attach them to fun worksheets that came home in Wednesday envelopes last week. For a little extra incentive, there will be a party for the class who collects the most before October 26th.

DONATE at www.lgef.orgArtMusic Counseling Science

Study finds arts, music can be the “secret” to STEM successSuccessful tech entrepreneurs seem to have a surprising “secret” to their accomplishments -

studying art, music, and hands-on creative activities.

A study published in the journal Economic Development

Quarterly  (1) found that participation in artistic activities

boosts the chance of entrepreneurial success in technical

fields.

Researchers followed a group of Michigan State University

honors college graduates from 1990 to 1994 who majored in

science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

Graduates who were successful entrepreneurs — those who

went on to found companies or produce patents — were

significantly more likely to have had participation in art, music

and hands-on creative activities than those who did not.

And its not just entrepreneurs who benefit from the arts; a

strong link was found with STEM graduates overall. In fact the

STEM practitioners in this study were 62% more likely to have

had classes in visual arts than the general population, 59%

more likely to have been taught music, 39% more likely to have

had dance instruction, and 38% more likely to have taken

acting lessons.

So how does their music, arts, and hands-on creative

experience help these engineers and scientists in the real

world? It seems artistic thinking is crucial to their work.

The study asked participants to identify the types of tools they used for problem solving and found,

“as one would expect of science and engineering professionals, the vast majority reported using logic

while doing their work…[but] an overwhelming majority also reported using ‘artistic’ styles of thinking:

95.3% reported using exploratory play as a method of problem solving; 80% reported using either

intuition, imagination, or both; and about 80% reported using analogies. In other words, these

successful STEM professionals use ‘artistic’ types of thinking at work just as often as they use

stereotypical ‘scientific’ modes of thinking.”
