From your Locum ... Mr Brian Murray, Tel: 01294 822272Email: [email protected]

A Good New Year to all our readers. I do hope it will be a fruitful and peaceful year for you. If you had been at church in January or listening on the internet then you will have heard me going on about love once more. What I was asking was “who do we love?” The stock answer may be that as Christians we are called to love everyone! Well we know from experience in life that is a hard one to live up to. But closer to home, should we be telling our loved ones much more that we appreciate them, that we love them?

I would love to see my dad and mum, this side of eternity, for even one more hour so that I could tell them openly and plainly that I had loved them. I would have so many questions for them that I should have asked when they were alive. It leads me to ask the simple but profound question, “How often do we tell our loved ones that we love them, that we appreciate them and that they mean so much to us?” Wives to husbands, husbands to wives, parents to children, children to parents.

Now I know it is maybe not the foremost thing that we can articulate into words. The word love is thrown around for any little thing these days and loses some of its deeper meaning perhaps. We might say, “Isn’t it enough from the odd word of gratitude and when my nearest and dearest actually says, “I love you”, as she does quite often?”

I don’t mean a passing “love you” as you go out the door or the end of a telephone conversation, I mean a heart to heart, a time to stop from rushing around and a face to face sincere word or two or three. If you haven’t spoken in that manner to your loved one in a long while I expect the remark from a spouse might be one of “Alright what have you done?” or “OK so what are you after?”, but that’s alright, that just gives you a chance to expound upon your effuse mumblings. It made me wonder did Jesus ever openly say in words he loved someone? I expect he did. All that is recorded in the Bible cannot cover His every single waking hour, but when we look at the Gospel message it is clear and indisputable that the whole message is founded upon a covenant of love. Love for all humanity.

Such love came from before the very creation where God’s plan of salvation is summed up in one verse. John Chapter 3 verse 16. If we never remember anything else of the Bible that verse would be a great starter for any discussion with those enquiring of the faith. Jesus loved everyone to death. Quite literally. He went to the cross for love of you and me, for all humanity. As an atonement for the sins of all humanity.

Do we remember some days in prayer to say to Jesus, “I love you?” We maybe did as children, but have we grown out of that closeness? We can make ourselves busy in church, tramping the streets with the good news of the Gospel in obedience to Christ’s calling, we can go to church every single Sunday, but as Paul writes in 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, all that is futile if it is not backed up with love. Jesus asked Peter three times “Do you love me?” Three times Peter had to confirm that he loved Jesus after he denied him three times when Jesus was arrested, but Peter was reinstated despite his fall from grace. How many times in the past have you told Jesus you love him?

In this time of Epiphany, we reflect once more on our faith, our journey from where we were, who we were, to where we are now. All in all we might just have that epiphany in our own lives, a bright light coming on in the darkness, about how Jesus is transforming us. How being Christian shifted our perspective on things we thought important that now seem irrelevant or worthless and by His Spirit He is bringing us to a place of humility, gentleness and patience.

Next time we pray remember to tell Jesus how you feel, just like telling those around you that you appreciate them and you love them. Remember to let the best friend in the world know that too.

Your friend and locumBrian

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. John 3:16 GNT

LISTENING TO HIM

Help me to see God, I’ve never had a vision. No angel, prophet or saint has appeared to me. I wish I could see you, God.

You’ve never shown yourself in physical form, bathed in light before my eyes. Is it that I’m blind, God?

Others are sure about the time of the end of the world but I see nothing. Help me to see, God.

That Jesus’ transfiguration may no longer be a puzzle but your truth, visible to me.

Listen to Him

Is that phrase God, your answer to my prayer?

How can transfiguration be heard by me? Is it that visions, God, sightings and forecasts must be tested by your word?

Listen to Him

I hear you, God I am listening. May your word in Jesus transfigure me so that others who are deaf may see you and hear.

Amen

From Prayers by Tony Burnham and Graham Cook

A PRAYER

Give me a good digestion Lord, and also something to digest

Give me a healthy body Lord, with sense to keep it at its best

Give me a healthy mind , good Lord to keep the good and pure in sight,

Which, seeing sin, is not appalled but finds a way to set it right.

Give me a mind that is not bored, that does not whimper, whine or sigh:

Don’t let me worry overmuch about the fussy thing called ”I”

Give me a sense of humour, Lord give me grace to see a joke, to get some happiness from life and pass it on to other folk.

On Sunday, 19 January, the Rev Sarah Nicol of St Cuthbert’s Church along with the members of the Saltcoats Fraternal, hosted a service to celebrate the beginning of the week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

It was a very well attended event with representatives from all the local church, North Parish, Baptist Church, Adelaide College, St Cuthbert’s, St Mary’s and Kirkgate attended the service.

This celebration was held in the large church hall which had been set out with tables and chairs in preparation for the social side of the event. The good news was they had to add extra tables to accommodate the numbers attending. It was house full and the service got underway with a welcome from Sarah Nicol.

We were delighted to have members of the Baptist Church praise band leading the singing of the four hymns, two of which were familiar and two not so familiar, but when the singing is from the heart then you soon pick up the tunes. Donald Currie of the Baptist church gave us a cheery mini talk about Jesus and Zacchaeus which was to lead us into a mock discussion by the members of the Fraternal in preparation for our discussions over tea and cakes.

The theme was Christian Hospitality and the questions for discussion:-

a) What does hospitality mean to you?

b) Which passages from the Gospels do you find helpful or challenging when thinking about Christian hospitality?

c) What could we do as churches together in Saltcoats to show Christian hospitality, both towards each other and towards the wider community?

No right or wrong answers – just an opportunity for us to share our thoughts on the subject of Christian Hospitality with members of the other churches.

I believe it was enjoyed by all present and hopefully something will come out of this initial get-together.

Just in case you think the dogs were at our carols and readings night looking for a mince pie, we had them visit the guild at the end of November and it was too late for the pictures to be included in the December magazine. They are Therapets who go into homes and schools and have a calming influence on people when they stroke them. The Bernese mountain dog is called Baillie and the collie Aero . They were very well behaved and just loved the petting they got from the ladies.

KIRKGATE CARE & SHARE

This successful venture continues to thrive with new people finding their way to the cafe and existing friends supporting us most weeks. We enjoyed a happy Christmas Party with lovely food and great entertainment; Santa and his trumpet-playing elf came and dustributed gifts to everyone.

New helpers continue to come forward and offer assistance for which we are very grateful. Graham, a community link worker, asked for our assistance with a Burns Supper which at the time of printing was due to take place on 29th January. 80 tickets were available and we hope it will be another successful community venture.

Foodbank parcels are available on Fridays and we are very grateful for the donations from our Kirkgate family. The hairdresser is always a popular facility. We have partners who come in from Turning Point, Housing, Money Matters and have recently been joined by TACT, and a public health nurse in offering health checks, all of whom support the folks who come along. Thanks to all involved in the venture.

CHANA update

9

South Beach House Margaret Cassidy

Christmas and New Year are well and truly past and all the extra entertainment and visitors are behind us. At present the house has been reasonably quiet over this past two weeks but that is acceptable after such a busy spell.

We have had the usual entertainers in but not a lot happening mainly due to the weather etc. When we cannot get out we have the two activity coordinators who have a full activity programme to call on and the residents on the whole enjoy quizzes, reading, arts and crafts, games, themed days when we talk about other countries and try out their food and drinks, moving and exercising and a whole lot more. Over the next few weeks we will celebrate Robert Burns and of course Valentine’s Day.

The next main thing on our agenda will be the reassessment of the Customer Service Excellence Award. This has been ongoing since 2007. Robert Sullivan the assessor will be with us for 2 days this time on 20th and 21st February just before I retire as manager from South Beach House on 29th February. Robert is always a very positive visitor and has helped us see things differently over the years and to look at our work positively at all times.

The winter is usually a good time for things to be done in the house with the staff and we have an abundance of training that we complete, some mandatory refresher courses and some new courses. Training is something we all take seriously and we also have about 30 e-learning courses that we complete on line every year. So the staff are very highly trained in all aspects of care.

That’s your update for this month. Till next month when it will be my last report to you.

Regards Margaret

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Jeremiah 29:11

For a long time we have been using a variety of ways to fundraise for Church funds by having our annual Christmas Fair, quizzes, fashion show etc. and we will continue to do so. Some of our congregation use mission boxes to put their spare change into and some save 5p and 20p pieces originally in Smarties tubes. We are very grateful for your continued support in all capacities.

There hasn’t been an uptake on new mission boxes in recent years and Smarties tubes have altered which means they don’t fit the coins so after discussion the Session would like to encourage every member of the congregation to consider having a church box which could be filled with any spare change throughout the year. The craft group have kindly offered to make the boxes and when assembled they will be on display in the vestibule. Once full the box or its contents can be handed in to either myself or Moira Cooper. If people who have a mission box wish to keep on using it that would not be a problem.

The money collected will go towards our refurbishment and it is surprising how all the small amounts add up. We need every penny to help us get back into the Sanctuary and make our Church as welcoming as our congregation.

What a great idea . The box may not look like this impression, but our craft team are so talented it will be exciting to see what they produce. Ed

Letters of AppreciationJust a note to say thank you to everyone for the lovely flowers, they looked lovely sitting in my hall. It was such a nice surprise to receive them. Love and best wishes to you all. Senga Welsh

I would like to thank my friends in the church for all the flowers I have received during my recent illness. They are much appreciated and it is good to know that people are thinking of you. Ray McKay

On behalf of Gordon and myself I would like to say a huge thank you for all your ongoing prayers, cards, flowers, visits and help with visiting. Knowing that you are there for us is a great comfort. Gordon has still a long way to go, it will be slow and we pray that he will regain enough mobility to allow him to return home and back to church in time. Elizabeth & Gordon McMahon

Sincere thanks for the phone calls and cards I received on the death of my brother Ian Wilson. Janey Tyre (Nee Wilson)

Thank you for the beautiful flowers received following the death of our good friend Margaret. The kindness and concern was very touching and much appreciated. Evelyn & Brian Green.

I would like to say thank you to everyone involved for the lovely flowers I received before Christmas. It was nice to still be remembered although I am no longer able to attend church these days. Shiela Rainey

We would like to thank the church for the beautiful flowers and kind wishes received on the death of Aunt Georgie. We also enjoyed the chat with Christine who kindly delivered them. Elizabeth & Angus Dodds

Thank you very much for the church flowers that I received before Christmas. They really brightened up our hallway over the festive period and lasted for a long time. Thanks for all the support I get from the Kirkgate family. Pamela Martin

Christmas GiftsThe Pastoral Team, along with the Kirk Session, wanted to show that we still care about members especially if they are unable to attend church anymore. Some lovely red begonias were sent out in time for Christmas.

There were too many letters, cards, phone calls and verbal thanks to print them all individually but they all said the same, that it was a lovely surprise to receive the gift and very much appreciated by all.

The team have had a busy few months making Christmas cards and special orders.

Once again we have been delighted with the support given by the congregation and friends. Our Coffee and Cards morning held at the beginning of November was the busiest ever and had a lovely relaxed chatty atmosphere.

Because of your custom during this past year we have been able to donate a total of £1,400 to Church and Fabric funds.

A big thank you to everyone. We hope you all enjoyed your Christmas and we look forward to seeing you on 7th March at our Easter Coffee & Cards - See ‘What’s on Page’

Anne, Carol, Christine, Jennifer, Solveig, Phyllis and Jean.

Thanks from the Craft Team

Mima McSwanProperty ReportOnce in every five years each church has a visit from a Surveyor, who has been instructed by the Presbytery to carry out a survey on the fabric of the church buildings and manse.

A surveyor from Allied Scotland visited Kirkgate on the 13 January, and spent several hours going round the church and then visiting the manse. Considering the situation we find ourselves in at present this was possibly not the ideal time to have such a visit but we do not have a choice in the matter.

In due course, we will receive a report on the visit accompanied by a list of areas that the surveyor believes require our attention.

Annual servicing of the church boilers has taken place with no obvious problems, also PAT testing.

On health and safety grounds we need emergency lighting installed in the church and halls. Arthur, our electrician has been busy going around the building to assess Kirkgate’s needs. I do not know the cost of this work yet, but an estimate should be with me shortly and it is work that has to be carried out.

The Manse will be subject to a similar round of servicing of alarms/fire extinguisher/electrical goods and boiler.

Roof Guard have visited Kirkgate and the estimate for repair work on the roof has been approved by the Kirk Session so repairs will in hand in the near future. Roof Guard will also be visiting the manse to undertake some minor roof repairs.

I know that many of you have had a shower on entering Kirkgate via the hall doors on a wet day. It appears that we need a drain company to come in and clear the blockage – so hopefully not much longer for you to endure the downpour.

Phase 2

You may or may not know that an area of the ceiling in the church came down about 4 weeks ago during the morning service – thankfully no one was in the sanctuary at the time. Unfortunately, the firm who had initially visited the church and wrote the report are no longer in a position to carry out the work. So, the Project Manager has had to seek new companies to estimate the cost of the proposed work. We are now in receipt of two estimates and awaiting a third. In consultation with the Project Manager we will discuss the contents of the quotations and see if we can find a suitable firm to carry out this work. Once the ceiling/decoration has been repaired then we will move on to the next area – heating.

15

Kirk Session Mima McSwan, Deputy Session Clerk

An event will be held in St Andrew’s Church, Ayr on 28th March for anyone with an interest in child/young people/family ministry.

Easter is only a short time away and the Session is considering what events we can plan for Easter. Last year we met along the shore for an early morning service on Easter Sunday. This year, we are looking at the possibility of joining with the Ardrossan churches for early morning worship. This has still to be confirmed but it would be nice to share in united worship.

Hopefully we will have the Daffodil Cross again this year, but much depend on the availability of daffodils. We struggled last year to fill the cross as the daffodils flowered early so hopefully there will be plenty still available come Easter as it is nice to have the Cross at the front of the church for all to see.

The Kirk Session has agreed to Mrs Margaret Cassidy being the Representative Elder on Presbytery for Kirkgate. We thank Mr Andrew Bruce for his service as our present Presbytery Elder. Andrew will stand down, but will continue to attend Presbytery as a Reader although he will lose his vote which he is willing to do as it will allow Mrs Cassidy to continue serving on Presbytery.

The annual attestation of Rolls and Records will be held in Kirkgate on Tuesday, 11 February at 7.00pm

Mrs Evelyn Green thanked the pastoral visitors and especially Brian & James for their strong support during a time when Kirkgate has experienced a considerable amount of illness/deaths within the congregation.

Mrs E McInnes and her team were delighted with the result of the Christmas Fair - £2,606. An excellent return and well done to all involved. Next venture should be another Fashion Show – and if that is the case then models will be required - your chance to show off that lovely slim figure after all the Christmas indulgencies!!!

CHANA is still going strong with 20/25 attending each Friday.

Christmas Lunch was a great success with 50 + meals being served. It was a very festive occasion with live entertainment in the background which was much appreciated by all.

On Wednesday, 29 January a Burns Supper will be held in Kirkgate which is open to all but it has to be a ticket event. To obtain a ticket contact Graham Campbell who is a community link worker or Pam Martin.

The Food Bank is working well with anything from 1or 2, up to 4 or 5 requests some weeks.

Mima McSwan is resigning from being a member of the Fraternal and delighted to say that Margaret Cassidy has volunteered to replace her.

In the not too distant future our local mission group of Presbytery (made up of members from the churches of the local towns) will be asked to meet with the Presbytery Appraisal Team.

Questions to be considered:

a) What does our mission group look like right now?

b) What could it look like?

c) What will it look like?

THE ORGANISTS’ GUIDE TO POLITICAL TERMS - by John Riley

Given all the present political and economic turmoil and uncertainties, here is a bespoke guide for organists to help navigate the plethora of jargon and follow current happenings.

Amendments - What organists do to the scores when they can’t play what is written.

S.N.P. - ‘Some Nasty Passages’, usually towards the end of a piece; can be circumvented by repeating the easier bits of the opening, and by the time one gets to the hard bits the congregation will hopefully have left the building, or be chatting too noisily to notice or care.Back Stop - Something fixed to the rear of an organ bench to help stop the organist (though not necessarily the whole organ bench) falling into the laps of the congregation below.

Select Committee - What an organist would like to do, so as to give the maximum chance of authorising major funds to be spent on the organ.Divergence - The difference between what is written in the music and what is actually played.

Reshuffle - What an organist sometimes unwittingly does to the order of the notes, each time that the piece is played.Treaty - Something that marks the end of a major bust-up between organist and music group or clergy. Treaties however can sometimes be broken, or merely serve to kick the can further down the road, (q.v.).Having your cake etc. A church or congregation wanting a top-class professional organist on an honorarium basis.Free Movement (1) A style of playing characterised by pronounced gestures and emulating the role of a conductor; liable to give anyone next to the organist, e.g. a page turner or a duet partner, an elbow in the side or slap in the chops.

Free Movement (2) A movement of an organ work that is devoid of any discernible pulse or metre.

Lost PropertyWe have a small collection of some lost property items located on the vestibule tables. Items include some gloves, hats, scarf and glasses. If you have lost something recently, please have a look and see if anything belongs to you.

Church of Scotland News & Events25 January, 2020

Prince William has been appointed as the Lord High Commissioner to the 2020 General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. The photo is from Kensington Palace.

During General Assembly week from the 16 -22 of May 2020, Prince William will attend on behalf of the Sovereign. He will make the opening and closing addresses to the Assembly, as well as carrying out official visits across Scotland.

Last year His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch attended the General Assembly as the Lord High Commissioner, serving in the role for the second time.

Her Majesty The Queen came in person to the General Assembly in 1969 and 2002.

Previous members of the Royal Family to be appointed to the role include HRH Prince Charles, HRH The Earl of Wessex and most recently HRH The Princess Royal in 2017.

Rev Dr George Whyte, the Principal Clerk of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland said: “We are honoured that her Majesty has appointed Prince William as Lord High Commissioner. We look forward to welcoming His Royal Highness to the General Assembly.”

24 January, 2020

Rt Rev Colin Sinclair has joined 10 other church leaders from across the UK in signing a statement calling for an end to the bitterness and divisions of Brexit.

“As Christians, we affirm our belief that all people are equally created in God’s image. Our country should be one that offers sanctuary to refugees and is intolerant of those who hate because of a person’s race or nationality. Both Leave and Remain campaigns agreed on this – we must now make it a reality.

“The continuing challenges of the climate crisis, global inequality and conflict will require both resolve and close international cooperation to be addressed effectively.”

The Church leaders have also sent a letter to European churches saying:“We greatly value the love and friendship of our sisters and brothers in other European churches, and have written to them publicly to assure them that these relationships will continue.

“We also recognise that 31 January will bring uncertainty and anxiety to many EU citizens living in the UK and British citizens living in the EU. Leaving the EU cannot mean abandoning our responsibilities towards these families.”The statement ends with a call to prayer for the future.

“We pray for the people of the UK, for our leaders, and for the whole of Europe, as we mark this significant moment together.”

21 January, 2020

The Church of Scotland has formally appointed conveners, vice conveners, interim heads and members of the two new Forums: Faith Nurture and Faith Impact.

Under the direction of the 14-person Assembly Trustees, which was implemented in June 2019, work will continue in achieving a reduction in central administration costs of £2m within two years.

This is in addition to the Presbytery Reform Plan which will see the structure of the Kirk’s 45 presbyteries reduced to around 12 over the next few years. Work is already underway and overtures on presbytery mergers are expected to go to the upcoming 2020 General Assembly.

In autumn 2019, the Kirk’s first Chief Officer was appointed by the Assembly Trustees. Dave Kendall has overall executive responsibility for the Trustees’ employees and budgets, and is taking forward the organisational implementation of the vision and the strategy of the General Assembly for a leaner and fitter Church.
