AGM UPDAteThanks to all who came along to our Annual General Meeting held on the 17th August. The Association’s chairperson Maureen Cope gave an upbeat and positive speech which was well received by all present.

“This year we carried out a major independent review of our finances, to make sure that the Association has a viable long term future. I’m pleased to confirm that the outcome of this was very, very positive”

“As members, Ardenglen belongs to all of us and it is vital that our staff, committee and all of you, can be confident that decisions taken today will not damage the Association for the future. As our auditor will shortly confirm, we remain financially strong and if we continue to be managed properly, we have no reason to believe that the Association has anything but a bright long term future.”

Maureen also touched on the range of the Association’s activities and highlighted that the recent riots in England show the importance of working and engaging with the local community and young people in particular.

“We continue to support and put resources

into various community projects, events and regeneration work and believe this is an area which will continue to expand.”

“Indeed in many ways Ardenglen is becoming a community anchor organisation and to be brutally honest, if we don’t at least try to support and invest in our community, no one else will”

“This will be a difficult balance, as we cannot lose sight that as well as taking on these new responsibilities, we must continue to provide the highest quality of repairs and other housing services, while keeping costs under control. It will be tough, but I firmly believe Ardenglen has a duty to support our community as best we can, through the difficult times which lie ahead”

Maureen highlighted that over £1.2m was being invested this year alone in fitting new heating, bathrooms and kitchens.

Maureen thanked members for attending and gave a special thank you to the Social Committee which has done so much to make the new community hall such a great success.

“As I said previously, it is the staff, committee and tenants working together that has made Ardenglen the success we are today. I am convinced that with your support we will enhance this success, continue to invest in your home and community and deliver what matters most to our customers.”

AGM honours Jean and tommy Two of Ardenglen’s longest serving members were thanked by the AGM for their contribution to their local area. Jean Mackay from Ardencraig was a founding member of Ardenglen nearly 21 years ago and served as a committee member for many years. Tommy Cope from Ballantay was a founding member of Castlebrae Co-op which merged with Ardenglen in 1996. Both Jean and Tommy have rarely, if ever, missed an AGM and both received a great reception from the audience as they picked up a small gift of appreciation.

Management Committee In accordance with standard AGM procedures, the meeting also elected a number of Committee members; the Management Committee membership is now:

Maureen Cope MBE Chair Isa Brier, Vice Chair Sheena Cadden, Secretary Carol Mitchell , Treasurer Don Cope Ann Marie Docherty Sandi Stone Frank Young Bobby Mitchell Angela McHugh Jacqueline Brown Sharon McElwaine Liz McKenzie Maureen Coyle

Maureen Cope MBE, Tommy Cope & Jean McKay - two longest servicing members

FUN DAY At the MAUReeN COPe COMMUNItY hALL FRIDAY 21St OCtOBeR 2011 – 11AM – 3PM

Our previous newsletter ran an article that saw us calling for budding Steven Spielberg’s to come and learn all about their heritage in a fun

and challenging environment at our Summer Camp.

This followed a decision by the Association, our Social Committee and Rhythm of the Celts in the Community (ROTCIC) to work together to assist local young people gain valuable experience of a range of life-skills surrounding drama and theatre production with a Celtic slant.

The Partnership began with a “team building” away day to an outdoor adventure centre to develop confidence and the idea of working together. The Summer Camp ran over six weeks during the school holidays and provided our young people with valuable experience of all aspects of “showbiz” production; from lighting design and operation to sound engineering,

stage and set design & management, event management, singing, music, dance and drama. Our fantastic Social Committee supported the whole initiative by rolling up their sleeves and getting involved too!

The final outcome of the project was the performance and recording of a play which the group had written, designed and managed themselves. The story was brilliant, the acting superb and the technical management first class; even the audience got involved at the end with a wee dance to celebrate the happy ending to all the trials and tribulations of Lord Machuil and Princess Iona! A fabulous night was had by all!

Throughout the six weeks we evaluated the outcomes of the project in partnership with Rhythm of the Celts. Here are just some of the comments that provide a flavour of the project’s success:

• RobynMcLaughlin,“Ihavereallyenjoyedthe Summer Camp and our day away to the Adventure Park. The Camp has given me something to look forward to during the holidays. After all, if this was not on, I would be really bored, hanging about with nothing

to do. I really hope that Ardenglen can get funding to keep the programme running so that we can create a Panto!”

• KarenMcCarron,“Twoofmysonshavebeen attending the Camp. They didn’t really get on before and didn’t speak to one another very much. Now they have found a common bond and are sharing their ideas and thoughts about the production. I can’t thank everyone enough!”

• KarenMcDonagh, oftheSocialCommittee,“Over the six weeks of the project we saw the young people learn, grow and develop before our very eyes. The final production was fantastic and was proof that if you set a goal you can achieve anything”.

Rhythm of the Celts in the Community is a newly formed charity with the aim to create cultural awareness amongst young people. The success of the pilot project was so clear that the Association is in talks about the possibility of engaging with even more young people and residents to deliver a pantomime designed and delivered by the local community, for the local community. Keep an eye out for more information as we develop our ideas!

We thought you’d like to hear all about the success of our Summer Events Programme!

First up was our fantastic day Trip to Alton Towers for our lucky over-10s (and their carers) on Thursday 1st July. All those who went along had a fantastic fun-packed day! The coach journey back home from England was filled with the sounds of snoring as we were all exhausted from the lack of sleep the night before and, of course, from the excitement of the day itself. No doubt, you can see the great time had by all from our pictures!!

Not forgetting our younger residents who enjoyed a great day out on the 14th July to Blair Drummond. On arrival at the safari park, the excitement on the bus from our youngsters was deafening and infectious as they spotted more and more fabulous animals! Our neighbours from Cassiltoun and the Jeely Piece Club also happened to be visiting the park on the same day – the animals must have thought that the whole of Castlemilk was invading!!!

And finally, a coach filled with our younger at heart residents left Castlemilk

at 9.30am on Friday 26th August to travel to Dumfries for a lovely day out! After a wander about the town and wee bit of shopping, we met up again in the Queensbury Hotel where all concerned tucked into a fish tea washed down with a wee half! The success of the day was clear as when asked where we could go for next year’s trip, the answer was unanimous - “Dumfries of course!” We even came across the “Hole in the Wall” pub, so we felt right at home!

The Social Committee has joined forces with Fair Deal volunteers to develop a Gardening Club based at the hall.

Land Engineering (the Association’s Landscape Contractor) has very kindly provided us with two raised beds and soil to start the project off. It is hoped that a small organic garden can be developed by this Group who are extending an invitation to local residents

to offer their support (and maybe even expertise!). Who knows, this could be the start of something bigger at Mitchellhill!

If this is something that is of interest to you and you would like become involved, please contact Fiona on 0141 631 5041

Telling Us What You ThinkYou may be aware that, from previous newsletters, the Association has been working hard to establish our “non-housing” role within the local community. We have always been involved in a range of community projects from building commercial office space, to constructing streetscapes to the provision of Welfare Rights.

However, our Committee believes that the swinging cuts in welfare and funding for key local services look unlikely to improve any time soon, if indeed ever. They feel that the bar for this type of work has been raised with the disappearance of projects from our local scene. “There are grants and other funding sources out there that can continue to support the delivery of services locally and this is where our Regeneration team come in,” said Bobby Mitchell, Chair of the Association’s Regeneration Sub-Committee. He continued, “It is essential that we plug the gaps and help our community through these difficult times. Lesley Macphee and Fiona McGovern are working on a range of projects that are designed to address issues of concern raised by local people and which will bring benefit to our community. We’ve got some really exciting ideas on the go!”

Following on from previous consultations, Fiona and Lesley recently hit the streets around our office to ask people what they thought and the results were not only really encouraging but were used to inform our Regeneration Action Plan for the current year. Fiona explained, “Our resources have to be directed at the things local people consider important. Our Regeneration Sub-Committee wanted to test the projects one last time for community support before approving the Plan. It was a really enjoyable afternoon and great to discover that we are on the right tracks!”

Many thanks to the 37 local people who gave us a few minutes of their time on the day of the Survey! Below is a brief summary of their thoughts and ideas

• 37residents(100%)thoughttheAssociation should be delivering non-housing activities like skill-building and community events.

• 37residents(100%)supportedspendingon these activities provided it was through grants and other income that wouldn’t increase rents.

• 28residents(76%)wantedfunding

directed towards social events.• 28residents(76%)wantedfundingforthe

provision of community facilities (like the hall).

• 27residents(73%)wantedmoneyspenton training and education opportunities.

• 31residents(84%)supportedspendingonthe provision of youth activities.

• 32residents(86%)supportedspendingonnew housing.

• 32residents(86%)thoughttheAssociationshould be looking into “new initiatives” that would add value to the area and/or bring income in to fund our regeneration work.

Other suggestions included re-developing Weans World and helping people unable to reach the hall attend social events and take part in any initiatives they are interested in.

Our Regeneration Action Plan has now been approved by Committee and progress will be monitored at the Regeneration meetings. Whilst we intend to hold future events to continue to canvas local opinion, any comments and suggestions are most welcome; please feel free to speak to Lesley (631-5042) or Fiona (631-5041) at any time!

FUN DAY At the MAUReeN COPe COMMUNItY hALL FRIDAY 21St OCtOBeR 2011 – 11AM – 3PM

The Regeneration Sub-Committee are busy looking at ways to bring funding and services into the area and nothing is off limits. We are therefore looking into things that wouldn’t “traditionally” have been something a Housing Association would get involved with.

A good example of this is our partnership with the Castlemilk and Carmunnock Windpark Trust to look into the possibility of wind turbine ownership. Our Regeneration Manager, Lesley Macphee explains, “Working in partnership with the Trust means that we can harness their skills and expertise in this area to help us deliver a community asset that is sustainable, both in terms of the “green” agenda and its potential financial return. We are jointly conducting a feasibility study which is not just new and exciting for us but feels right and a natural progression of our long association together.”

This issue of “financial sustainability” is important because, whilst grants are a good source of income, they traditionally come with conditions and a limited time-span. Castlemilk has unfortunately seen lots of successful projects delivering vital services disappear over the years as grant funding runs out. With the social sector being pinched, the Regeneration Sub-Committee are very clear that we need to ensure a long term income stream to avoid our regeneration work being disrupted by annual grant funding availability.

Another high profile project that the Association has been championing for some time is the

redevelopment of the former Mitchellhill site. You may remember previously that the Association undertook a feasibility study with the support of the Windpark Trust, Fair Deal and other partners. Well, that was 3 years ago!! Although we have been working hard behind the scenes to keep the project on the agenda of the “powers that be” we need to reconnect with the local community to see if it is something we can promote together.

Local support for the project at the time of its launch,inNovember2008,wasveryenthusiasticand it was picked up by the radio and papers as “a good news story.” Everybody loved the idea! The study itself recommended several uses for the site including

• amulti-useactivitycentre(outdooractivities,cafe, shop etc)

• amarket-gardensocialenterpriseandcommunity greenspace

• “sustainable”housingincorporatingrenewable technologies and adaptable living.

A big part of the study was based around the fact that the Mountain-bike circuit for the 2014 Commonwealth Games is located on Cathkin Braes. The track is now being designed and Lesley visited the site as part of a Design workshop; “The route for the track stretches all around Cathkin Braes from the South Lanarkshire side right down onto Ardencraig Road beside the Maureen Cope Community Hall. In fact the most skilled tracks are visible from there. It will be a spectacular circuit and we believe not something

that should simply “disappear” after the Games are finished. We hope the local community will join us to fight for a bit of the Games “legacy” for our part of the City too.”

To this end, we will be working with Glasgow University to raise the profile of the project amongst local people over the coming months. The Social Committee has already signed up to support this fantastic piece of work. As Karen McDonagh from the Social Committee said, “It didn’t take us long to realise the potential a project like this could have for our local area. There would be health and recreational benefits as well as employment and volunteering opportunities. What’s not to support? We will be doing all we can to encourage our friends and neighbours to get involved.”

So look out for events around the Mitchellhill Legacy Project taking place over the next few months and get involved, find out what’s happening and hopefully help us make this amazing idea a reality!

A new Community Investigation Unit based at Rutherglen Police Office has been set up to reduce violent crime and gang related disorder and antisocial behaviour affecting Fernhill and Castlemilk.

Working closely with community police officers, the unit will be manned by officers from both the Glasgow South and South Lanarkshire

Divisions and will proactively seek to strengthen links with local landlords and other agencies. It is hoped that this sharing of intelligence, together with enhanced CCTV use, will deter, disrupt and increase detection rates of offenders.

Chief Inspector David Walker, Area Commander of Rutherglen and Cambuslang said,

“We are pleased to be able to develop this investigation unit in the area that has been causing most concern recently with antisocial behaviour and violent crime. Officers in the unit will be

working very proactively to find those persons in the community who are causing misery with their actions.”

Whilst the Association will co-operate with this initiative in any way we can, nothing beats the support of local people who are urged to get in touch with Strathclyde Police with any concerns they might have.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Rutherglen Police Office on 0141 532 5200. Alternatively, anonymity can be guaranteed by calling Crimestoppers on 0800555111.

Cash for KidsOnce again, the Association intends to submit applications for the Christmas 2011 “Cash For Kids” Appeal. Together, we have been very successful in the past in securing assistance for what can be a financially difficult time of year for most families.

As the closing date for applications is Monday 17th October, we need to hear from you as soon as possible! So what are you waiting for – don’t delay and call the office today!

Discretionary housing PaymentCould you be doing with a little extra help to cover your rent and /or council tax costs?

If you receive at least 1p of housing or council tax benefit but are not receiving the full amount you are eligible to apply to the fund for extra assistance. The award will usually depend on your financial circumstances and can vary from an extra £5 per week upwards for a period of 6 months. Many of our tenants have already benefited from this fund and

you may wish to know that even if you have already received help from the fund and this has now stopped, you can re-apply for further assistance.

If you are interested in applying please contact your housing officer or call to make an appointment with Paul Pearson, our Welfare Rights Officer; either will assist you with the application. Alternatively, you can collect a form from the Association’s office to apply direct.

For a two week period during August, Clean Glasgow carried out a campaign against irresponsible dog owners from the Tormusk area who fail to clean up after their pets. This was part of a hard hitting City-wide campaign to tackle persistent offenders.

As well as continuing to issue fixed penalty notices of £40 to those caught in the act, teams will now be able to use CCTV and witness statements to tackle past offences. Dog wardens will also pick up animals that are stray or not under proper control. Ultimately, dog owners who fail to co-operate may be taken to Court and have their pet taken away from them.

Working closely with local landlords like Ardenglen, Clean

Glasgow will tackle hot-spots identified by communities and will target new areas every two weeks. During the Tormusk Initiative:

• 5residentswerefined• 9publichealthreferralswere

made due to dog fouling in backcourts

• 8warninglettersissued• 6CCTVreferralswere

followed up by community officers.

Leader of Glasgow City Council, Cllr Gordon Matheson said: “People hate dog fouling. For some reason, a minority of people think this behaviour is perfectly acceptable. Even worse, they think they’ll never be caught. I want to turn that on its head. We are going to target

dog fouling with a much heavier hand – using intense resources; enforcement officers, CCTV and direct communication with local residents.”

You will be only too aware of how busy our office can be. It is now almost 12 years old and in need of a make-over!

Our Committee has worked tirelessly on this project for a few months and has prioritised the areas used by tenants for investment; places like the entrance, reception area and interview room facilities. Designs are currently being finalised and it is hoped that works will begin as early as possible in the new year.

Our Regeneration Manager, Lesley Macphee, has some words of comfort for those who may have concerns what all this will mean for our delivery of services. “We will keep the office open throughout the period

of the works and will try to phase different parts of the operation to minimise upset for tenants. However, it is inevitable that disruption will occur and you might find yourself in a different part of the building to your usual, but we are confident that the finished result will be well worth the effort.”

Maureen Cope, our Chairperson, commented “One of our first jobs will be to upgrade the main entrance which is currently so difficult to use. We have worked hard with our Designers to make everything easy, bright and comfortable. We can’t wait to get started!”

Look out for more details in our next newsletter!
