Fly away with the Arden Theatre during its 29th Season and experience some of the finest talent in North America without even leaving your seat. Swing through the streets of New Orleans with the infectious sounds of the Hot 8 Brass Band, travel through Canadian rock history with the likes of the Cowboy Junkies and The Northern Pikes, and taste the island flavour of Danny Michel’s Caribbean grooves, influenced by his time living in Belize. Immerse yourself in impassioned street dance by Canada's own Bboyizm, then land deep in a one-man theatrical homage to the epic film trilogy, Lord of the Rings™. Once again, the Arden Theatre offers you and yours an invitation to escape from the everyday through engaging and diverse programming.

This season, I invite you to take flight with the Arden Theatre and cultivate inspiration through rich artistic offerings. Vibrant cultural expression through the arts is an integral component of our thriving community; uniting us with dynamic artistic experiences and strengthening our identity as residents. Your ongoing support of the Arden Theatre reflects a shared commitment with the City of St. Albert to provide accessible cultural opportunities for future generations. So come, enjoy, and let your imagination soar to new heights at the Arden Theatre.

I would be remiss to not acknowledge and thank former Professional Programming Presenter, Casey Prescott, for his work curating this season’s program. Thank you, Casey for bringing your vibrant vision to the Arden Theatre, City of St. Albert and the Cultural Services team for these past two seasons!

Joel Plaskett is a man blessed with a sparkling ability to draft catchy folk tunes that sound both effortless and honest. With only the simple strings of a guitar he can weave a tale that is wistful or winsome, rollicking or radiant. A prolific writer and gracious performer, Plaskett has firmly established himself as a significant contributor to the great tradition of outstanding Canadian folk musicians. Garnering his first Juno in 2010, he is also an avid collector of East Coast Music Awards. But despite critical accolades, this stripped-down acoustic show remains an intimate evening with one of Canada’s most earnest singer-songwriters.

Their motto is simple: Dance to express! Not to impress. Merging stunning athleticism, relentless energy and impassioned choreography, IZM shatters preconceived notions

about b-boying and hip hop. Moving street dance to centre stage, Bboyizm showcases ten of Canada’s most talented dancers who simultaneously display a dazzling

cohesiveness and inexhaustible individual strength. Working right on the breaking edge of the dance world, IZM asks the audience to connect with the dancers and rewards their

attention with moves that defy expectations. A hit at the 2011 International Children’s Festival, these masters of their medium celebrate self-expression with a breathless foray

of authentic hip hop dance styles. As part of St. Albert’s StArts Fest during Canada’s Culture Days, Bboyizm will be offering a free workshop open to the public.

seTTing folk-roCk on fire.

A smoldering fusion of gritty rock n’ roll and dusty country, Whitehorse is the result of the long anticipated collaboration between Canada’s favourite musical couple, Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. With numerous accolades behind both names, including Juno nominations and Canadian Folk Music Awards, this inevitable partnership entwines Doucet’s hefty guitar and McClelland’s velvety vocals. Delicious and deeply satisfying, the chemistry on stage between these two is effervescent. Their voices dance and lace together seamlessly, while their sound drips with southern swagger. Reminiscent of the road-tested romance of Johnny Cash and June Carter before them, this is a musical marriage that was truly meant to be.

The blues should break your heart, then turn right around and restore your faith. And that is the very definition of Matt Andersen’s sound. Born in the

workingman’s town of Perth-Andover, New Brunswick, his music echos that rough existence but also the warmth of family life. A rising artist who has shared

the stage with the likes of Bo Diddley, Randy Bachman and many more, Andersen became the first Canadian to win Memphis’ famed International Blues Challenge. Known for his brawny voice that weakens at the perfect moment, Andersen sings

his songs for those carrying a heavy load, in order to lighten it just a little.

From the moment De Temps Antan set bow to strings, the fiddle dances, voices rise and you feel the heartbeat of Canada’s past. Transporting listeners to the days

where halls would burst to life after long hours of hard labour, De Temps Antan can set the night alight with that same sense of revelry. The trio of Éric Beaudry,

André Brunet and Pierre-Luc Dupuis work the accordion, harmonica, bouzouki, guitar and the quick step of drumming feet, to provide audiences with a passionate

performance of French-Canadian traditional music. Displaying boundless energy, De Temps Antan’s fast-paced folk music is a dizzying delight for the ears.

The legend lives on…

It’s not a true story, but the stories in it are true! In this tribute to the legend of Country music, actor Joe Matheson masterfully embodies the legend of Hank Williams. Playing all of his hits, including Move It On Over, Cold, Cold Heart and Hey Good Lookin’, this musical theatre piece is filled with tales only this driftin’ cowboy could tell. A veteran of the stage, Matheson has performed in the Canadian premier of Tommy and Miss Saigon, and has recently wrapped up a two-year run in Toronto rocking and rolling in the hit musical, Jersey Boys. The voice is spot on, the laughs are lighthearted and the music is, of course, just a lil’ bit lovesick.

This Halloween, an eerily blue sound will be flooding the blackest of nights. In an original presentation, the Arden has gathered together a musical coven

consisting of five of Canada’s top blues players. Bluebird North: Halloween Blues is a rare opportunity to see these supernaturally-talented musicians meet and

share the stage. Each with their own bewitching groove, Colin Linden, Little Miss Higgins, John Rutherford, Graham Guest and Grant Stovel, will

take the audience on a moonlight adventure, exploring a smattering of styles, featuring a little roots, a little soul, a little r&b and a whole lot of blues.

one man To rule The ring.

It seems like an impossible feat, but like Frodo saving Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron, one man rises to the occasion. Endorsed by Gandalf himself (well, actor Sir Ian McKellen) Charles Ross plays every character, casts every spell, fights every battle and shrinks Peter Jackson’s epic film trilogy down to a hilarious fantasy-filled homage to one of the most popular series of all time. Having already proven his interpretive abilities with his celebrated Off-Broadway show One Man Star Wars Trilogy, the longer and more complicated Lord of the Rings™ was the only logical next step for this sorcerer of the stage.

Danny Michel makes the kind of rock that has undeniable rhythm and spicy smooth hooks. Having opened our 2010-2011 Season with his signature pop-rock sound and infectious charisma, Michel returns to the Arden with echoes of traditional Garifuna,

rock, funk and Caribbean grooves that will have audiences flocking back to see him live. With a brand new album inspired by his recently adopted home of Belize, Michel is the kind of singer-songwriter who can effortlessly slip from genre to genre seamlessly.

Innovative, lively and charming, this performance will blend Michel’s modern guitar flourishes and gritty notes to create the full sound of a rock n’ roll band.

Known as a pianist with poetic vision and musical intelligence, Minsoo Sohn continues to gather accolades from critics and audiences alike for his virtuosity and artistic expression. His path to conquering Bach’s illustrious Goldberg Variations, a monumental work in piano literature, began at the age of three. Following a move to Boston from his native Korea in his teens, Minsoo was soon hailed as a performer with unbelievable technical prowess and versatility, and in 2006 he became the First Laureate of the prestigious Honens International Piano Competition. Sohn’s elegant yet articulate approach to this dazzling array of 30 variations fully embraces the power of his instrument to create a performance rich in emotion, and all engaging to those in his presence.

Innovative. Ingenious. Incomparable. Just three words that only begin to describe Socalled. A pianist, producer, composer, arranger and rapper, Socalled’s music merges disparate genres together creating a style that is truly fresh and exciting. Hailing from Montreal, Socalled builds on his background in klezmer, funk, hip hop and classical, blending rich, full sounds with electronic beats and rap hooks that skitter across the melody. Enlivened with humour and bright, upbeat messages, Socalled, along with his six-piece band, exudes a creativity that is both inspiring and infectious.

Del Barber and Ben Sures aren’t simply two songwriters penning catchy hooks – they are telling warm, sincere and timeless stories with a tune in their hearts and guitars

in and out of charming and witty anecdotes and into song. While Barber has two Western Canadian Music Awards to his credit, Sures can call himself the winner of the

folk category at the 2005 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Both can equally claim an ever growing musical career that just keeps getting better.

The Hot 8 Brass Band was born and raised in the heart of New Orleans, where the infectious buzzing of trumpets, trombones and tubas make up the very pulse of the city. Their music epitomizes the street sound that New Orleans is known for – the joyful thumping roar of the bass drum, a vibrant horn section and the pure love of making music. The Hot 8’s instruments rattle with life, infusing their concerts with that trademark energy that turn their shows from a performance to a party. Guaranteed to make feet jump and shoulders shake… this is one hot night of music!

Jeremy Fisher and Emm Gryner are two unique Canadian voices that share a poetic tongue. Scouring the English language for a beautiful phrase that has yet to be

sung, or a truth that has yet to be told, these singer-songwriters drench their work in honest emotion, in order to truly communicate with their audiences. Fisher is a

troubadour, whose tunes have a road-ready quality marked by years of busking with just his guitar and harmonica. Gryner is an enchantress, whose vocals lift towards

the star-scape as she inter-changes guitar for piano. This is a striking double-bill that overflows with youthful brilliance.

thick guitar licks and pop-rock melodies. Western Canadian Music Award Hall of Fame recipients in 2012, The Northern Pikes quickly became mainstays

of rock radio and remain a classic rock favourite to this very day. With four gold albums, one platinum album and eight Juno nominations to their credit,

The musical merger of Habib Koité and Eric Bibb brings together two soulful histories into a never before heard guitar sound that is passionate and ebullient. Born in Mali, Western Africa, Koité is heir to an ancestral knowledge set to song that places him among the most influential voices of contemporary Africa, while Bibb’s lineage in the traditional blues sound has produced an earthy mix of folk and gospel dating back to the work songs of the deep south. Forging a bridge across the Atlantic, Bibb and Koité are two seriously talented players, whose combined efforts are too exhilarating to ignore.

a banjo and a clear, clever voice. Luedecke’s easygoing openness and inter-song musings make him a favourite son in his adopted home of Nova Scotia. A songwriter

who doesn’t sugarcoat his fears, he’s a thoughtful lyricist that allows his songs to carry the fresh breeze of bittersweet hopefulness. A Juno award winner with a sense of melody that is warm and crisp, Luedecke is a poet touched by tenderness and wit.

In this special cinematic performance, the Hot Club of San Francisco presents Cinema Vivant: an evening of vintage silent films accompanied by live music. Matching every movement on the screen with the Hot Club’s characteristic virtuosity, passion and humor, Cinema Vivant celebrates the innovative storytelling and animation of film pioneers Ladislaw Starewicz and Charley Bowers. Lead by the highly impressive Paul Mehling – a life-long fan of the gypsy style – this seven piece ensemble dances with the spirit of Django Reinhardt, keeping the music sharp, mysterious and the perfect accompaniment for these imaginative films. A prolific artist, releasing 11 albums over 10 years, he colours outside the lines with soulful, raspy vocals and poetic lyrics that keeps audiences coming back for

Ron Sexsmith is, quite simply, a Canadian treasure. His latest release, Long Player Late Bloomer, is perhaps one of his most musically uplifting albums, rich in soulful undertones and delivered with sincerity and panache. The plan is simple: to win the local pageant and move up to movie star from there. Combating nerves and a ‘puritanical work ethic,’ she sets her sights on a life far away from the farm. Often described as haunting, alluring and dreamy, Cowboy Junkies have long since secured their place in the annals of Canadian rock history with their lauded
