1. DESCRIPTION

1.1 Unit general

The Huisman designed Arctic S allows to operate at different

drafts resulting in three main operating modes. The unique

design combines the advantages of a conventional semi-

submersible resulting in very low motions in waves and a

heavily strengthened ice resistant unit when operating in ice

at deep draft afloat. In third operating mode the unit acts as a

gravity based structure.

The Arctic S drilling unit is designed to drill wells in arctic

conditions, moored in ice infested waters with ice thickness

up to approximately 1.0-1.5 meter. The unit consists of a

round floater, eight columns and a round deckbox.

When operating in ice the unit will ballast to ice draft (partly

submerged deckbox) to protect the riser against level ice,

rubble and ice ridges. The round conical shaped deckbox has

a heavily strengthened structure at waterline level to deflect

and break the ice.

Station keeping in ice infested waters is achieved by a sixteen

(16) point mooring system. The unit can operate in water-

depths between 35 and 1000m (115 and 3000ft). When no

ice is present the unit operates at its operating draft as a

conventional semi-submersible unit. The Arctic S is designed

for year round operations in the Arctic. Depending on ice

conditions, ice management can be required.

For shallow water with water depths between 12 and 30.5m

(40 and 100ft) the unit can be set on the sea bed. This depth

can be increased by using seabed templates to approx. 50m

water depth. Therefore also the columns and the round floater

are strengthened to withstand ice loads. Skirts are installed

under the pontoon for increasing lateral resistance of the

seabed.

1.5 Motions Characteristics

The Arctic S has excellent motion characteristics. The heave

motion of the Arctic S is even better than the heave motion of

a conventional semi-submersible.

Excellent seakeeping performance is confirmed by extensive

model testing in a seakeeping tank for a similar, larger design.

The tests are performed for operating, survival, transit and ice

drafts. The motions were monitored. The sufficiency of airgap

is verified.

1.6 Ice resistance

The investigation on the ice loads and the behaviour in ice is

conducted in an ice tank for a similar larger design. The unit

has been tested at two drafts. The tests at the operational ice

draft provided the global ice loads necessary for the design

of the mooring system. The tests at the transit draft allowed

checking the feasibility of the transit in ice.

1.8 Drilling equipment

Since the unit will operate in arctic conditions, the complete

drilling system is enclosed to provide an acceptable working

environment. The design of the drilling equipment set is

new but it is based on proven components. The complete

functioning package comprises:

2.4 million pound derrick system

Vertical pipe handling gear, capable of handling 135ft

stands

Substructure with 1.28 million pound riser tensioning

system

Electric and hydraulic power and control systems

Horizontal pipe handling gear (catwalk machines, pipe and

riser overhead cranes)

Skid systems, BOP overhead cranes and deck cranes

1.7 Mooring system

A 16 point mooring system is utilized. On the vessel side

16 chain lines are provided. Depending on the water depth

different pre-laid systems will be utilized. In shallow water the

chain lines will be sufficient. In deeper waters polyester lines

will be required for a chain/wire/chain configuration.

The mooring system is designed to withstand the forces from

the drifting ice with thickness up to approximately 1.0-1.5m

unbroken level ice.

Efficiency

The Drilling Equipment Set (DES) contains the drilling system.

The system has dual drawworks allowing transferring of

the drill line from one drum to the other eliminating slip-cut

procedures, saving several hours each time the wire would

normally be cut. The system has splittable blocks on the

travelling block. The splittable blocks allow push button

reeving change from 16 to 12, 8 or 4 falls when handling

lighter loads, increasing the block speed and the effective

stroke of the passive heave compensation cylinders. Because

of the design of the BOP handling system, the substructure

can be flush with the main deck of the vessel, approximately

15m lower than on a conventional semisubmersible. The

reduced height of the substructure lowers the centre of

gravity.

Safety

Since the drill floor and catwalks are flush with the main

deck, materials can be handled much safer. Most machinery

(drawworks, heave compensators etc.) is located inside the

enclosed derrick providing a safe and protected area for

maintenance.

Redundancy

The complete system is designed with an extreme high

redundancy:

Dual drawworks, allowing 100% load to be handled at half

the speed with one drawworks drum out of order.

Dual Passive Heave Compensator cylinders, allowing 100%

load to be compensated at half the stroke with one cylinder

blocked.

Active Heave Compensation with Passive Heave

compensation as backup.

Four pipe rackers, providing redundant pipe handling.

Electrical and hydraulic power units split into two sections

and fed from two vessel switchboards, securing power at

all times.

Redundant PLC and SCADA network.

1.9 Integrated control system

An in-house developed integrated control and monitoring

system ensures trouble free operation of the rig. This means

full control of all equipment from a single control system

without any third party interfaces.

The drilling system is controlled mainly from the driller’s cabin

and the aft driller’s cabin. However, in case of malfunction

of the control system, most equipment can be controlled

manually as well.

The control system consists of the following main

components:

Central PLC

Remote Input/Output stations

Operator chairs and SCADA screens

All regularly used controls, switches and joysticks are located

on the operator control chairs. To keep the control chairs as

simple as possible, the readout of process-measured values,

status, warning, alarms and job dependent settings are

incorporated in the SCADA system.

Included in the control system is the Huisman Geolograph.

This system is used during drilling and evaluation of the drilling

data. The system is developed with the following features:

Monitoring of all relevant drilling parameters on the rig

Exporting of drilling data in Excel format for in-depth

evaluation enabling the driller and the company man to

make decisions during critical operations

Integration with the rig control system, making use of the

sensors already present.

The control system is prepared for a satellite/telephone

modem connection for service engineers to log on to the

system from the office. This utility can be used for providing

real time drilling data to the office, troubleshooting, software

updates, and for remote service assistance from Huisman’s

engineers. The layout of the control system links all devices

to one single network which is connected to the satellite /

telephone modem. To ensure safe operation, the connection

to the rig uses a secure VPN tunnel.
