Overview

This guide lists and describes the NICE approved archiving devices (see Table 1-2: Approved Archiving Devices on page 14) and media.

It also describes the maintenance procedures for the different devices.

NOTE: To avoid a mechanism jam when using labels on archiving media:

• Labels must be attached to the recessed label area on archiving media and nowhere else.

• Labels must be firmly attached and not allowed to peel off or curl at the corners.

• A label must not be attached on top of another label.

• Only use the labels that are supplied with the archiving media.

DVD Media Care

As an optical medium, recordable DVD media are exceptionally well-suited to the rigors of real life. However, such media are not indestructible.

To help preserve DVD media:

• Only attach approved paper labels to disc media.

• The signal surface is closer to the label side, so take particular care when marking media. Use only felt tip pens when writing directly on media, never hard tip or ball point pens.

• When not in use, store DVD media vertically and in a dust-free cases.

• When placing a DVD medium in its case, ensure that it is seated firmly in the center holder.

• Keep DVD media away from excessive heat, sunlight, or anything that may scratch them.

• Storage conditions should be held within 5 to 158 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 to 70 C) and 3 to 95% relative humidity.

• Operating conditions should be between 23 and 131 degrees Fahrenheit (-5 to 55 C) and 3 to 95% relative humidity.

IMPORTANT The DVD drives do not require scheduled cleaning.

NOTE: Try to maintain the balance of the media. Attaching a label to only part of a disc might create an imbalance.

NOTE: DVD media are not based on magnetic signals, so magnets and strong electrical fields will not affect them like they will videotapes, credit cards or floppy discs.

WARNING Do not use cracked or warped media! If a DVD disc breaks inside of the unit, pieces are likely to strike the optics.

DVD Media Cleaning

To clean DVD media:

• If DVD media get dirty, you can clean them easily with any on-the-market cleaning kits or basic rubbing alcohol.

IMPORTANT This section is only relevant for non-cartridge media!

WARNING Avoid using abrasives, solvents, or highly acidic cleansers.Use a soft, lint-free cloth, and wipe gently in a straight line from the center of the media, out. This will prevent any potential scrapes from interrupting with the circular path of the signal.

NOTE: To view eventlog messages:

• For Version 8.8 Loggers (NiceLog ISA and NiceCall Focus II), navigate to My Computer > D:\NTLogger\Log.

• For all other Loggers, navigate to My Computer > D:\NTLogger\Logger\Log.

IMPORTANT • If an error occurs in the DVD, do not restart the Logger before ejecting the archiving media

from all DVD drives in the system.

• Before performing a DVD device assignment change (e.g. from auto-archiving to retrieval or vice versa), ensure that the Logger’s front panel doors are fully open because the DVD tray will automatically eject after the assignment change. Failing to do so can cause errors in the Logger.

WARNING When browsing in the My Computer folder, do not browse in the removable disk drives or CD drives as this might cause an interruption in the Logger archiving operation.

AIT MaintenanceEach cleaning medium can be used up to 50 times.

AIT tape drives need to be cleaned periodically, when one of the following alerts is received:

• Application cleaning alert

• Tape LED cleaning alert

To clean AIT tape drives:

1. When the application displays a message indicating that the drive must be cleaned or when the cleaning request LED in the drive is lit (every 100 hours of head operation), insert the approved cleaning medium into the drive (see NICE Archiving Devices and Media Reference Guide).

The drive will run for about a minute, and then the cleaning medium will be ejected.

2. Remove the cleaning medium from the drive.

3. After each cleaning cycle, mark an X on the label stuck to the cleaning medium.

This provides a record of how many times the medium has been used.

WARNING If an AIT archiving drive is accidentally cleaned with a spent cleaning cassette, the used-up cassette will slowly contaminate the drive. The contamination can spread to the archiving medium. The archiving medium can then contaminate a new AIT archiving drive and cause it to fail.

DDS and DAT72 Maintenance

DDS and DAT72 MaintenanceThe DDS and DAT72 tape drives should be cleaned every time you replace a medium. Ensure that there is always a cleaning medium available (each cleaning medium can be used up to 25 times).

To clean DDS or DAT72 tape drives:

1. Insert the cleaning medium into the drive.

The drive runs for a few seconds, and then the cleaning medium is ejected.

2. Remove the cleaning medium from the drive.

3. After each cleaning cycle, mark an X on the label stuck to the cleaning medium.

This provides a record of how many times the medium has been used.

IMPORTANT The HP DAT 72 internal and HP DAT72 USB drive has an advanced cleaning mode that can detect whether a single clean operation will be sufficient or whether multiple cleans will be needed (usually two, maximum four). This may result in a longer cleaning cycle and a reduction in the number of cleans per medium.

WARNING If an archiving drive is accidentally cleaned with a spent cleaning medium, the used-up medium will slowly contaminate the drive. The contamination can spread to the archiving medium. The archiving medium can then contaminate a new DDS or DAT72 drive and cause it to fail.

IMPORTANT For DAT72 drives:If a cleaning medium reaches its maximum number of uses (expires) during the middle of a cleaning cycle, it must be replaced:

• When a cleaning medium expires, the Clean LED blinks. However, the expired cleaning medium is not automatically ejected from the device.

• To eject the cleaning medium from the device, open the Backup application, select the medium to be removed and click Eject. The medium is ejected from the drive.

• Remove the cleaning medium and replace it with a new one.The cleaning cycle continues.

Overview

OverviewThis section describes the various requirements and installation procedures for DVD software, firmware and driver required updates for all NICE Logger systems with DVD archiving drives. These updates are essential for proper and stable DVD archiving operation.

NICE provides a package containing all files required for these updates. Throughout the procedure Performing Updates on page 72, you will be referred to the files provided in this package. To download the package, follow the link below:

http://www.extranice.com/EIS/AdditionalResources/Drivers%20Tools%20and%20Utilities/DVD%20Updates%20Package.zip

PrerequisitesPrior to any system update activities are performed on the Logger:

• Perform a Manual Archiving to Media in order to capture the latest recordings.

• If there are any media in the DVD drives, ensure that they are ejected.

Performing Updates

IMPORTANT If the manual archiving fails, do not proceed with any activities and inform the appropriate managers, supervisors, etc.Failure to do so can endanger data on the Hard Disk Drives!

TIP: Copy all software installation files and OS files to the Desktop so that the installation is completed without using the DVD drives.

IMPORTANT Print Table 6-1: DVD Software, Firmware and Driver Updates List on page 73. Follow the steps in the list and when completed, mark them off in the checkboxes provided.Do not deviate from the explicitly stated steps in the list.

NOTE: Before performing DVD Software, Firmware and Driver updates, the Logger must be rebooted without the Logger Software starting automatically (i.e. immediately after the Operating System starts up).Performing Step 1 through Step 3 in Table 6-1: DVD Software, Firmware and Driver Updates List on page 73 prevents the Logger Software from starting automatically.

NiceLog ISA 8.80 Logger PIO Mode Hotfix for DVD-RAM

Problem DescriptionAfter the Windows IDE/ATAPI Port driver receives a cumulative total of six time-out or cyclical redundancy check CRC errors, the driver gradually reduces the communications speed (transfer mode) from the highest to lower DMA modes. If the driver continues to receive excessive time-out or CRC errors, the driver eventually reduces the transfer mode to the slowest PIO mode.

Solution DescriptionThe PIO mode problem is solved by installing a newer Ali IDE driver and by applying the registry patch which strengthens immunity of the OS in downgrading of ATAPI transfer mode by receiving CRC errors or excessive time out from IDE Devices.

NOTE: This hot fix applies only to NiceLog ISA 8.80 Logger systems with DVD IDE devices and Prox1560 CPU cards.
