Bus Trip to Sheepvention

Times: Depart 8.30am from Flagstaff Hi ll Car Park and return by 4.30 pm.

Cost: $38 (Seniors Citizens Club members $30 plus $8 paid by the club). Cost includes entry to Sheepvention plus $15 meal voucher

Meet at the Flagstaff Hill Car Park and travel by bus to the Penshurst Gardens for morning tea. Travel on to Hamilton Sheepvention where you are free to wander and enjoy activities such as: Ram Sale, Sheep Show, Victorian Farm Dog Competitions, Inventions Competitions and the much loved Wool Fashion Parade.

Please note: This trip involves extensive walking and good mobility. Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential. Cancellation policy applies and it is available from Reception.

Dementia Friends & Volunteers Information Session

Dementia Friends are people in our communi-ty who want to make a positive difference in the lives of those living with dementia. Find out how to become a Dementia Friend!

Moove & Groove Program Volunteers, Meals on Wheels Volunteers and friends and neighbours of people with dementia are encouraged to attend.

What Is Dementia, with information on dementia symptoms, effective communication and managing the changes.

Café Style Support Program - W’bool

Register with My Aged Care to be assessed for the café style social support for carers and the person they care for who is over 65 years.

This program welcomes people with dementia as well as people with other health conditions and their carers. The common element is the desire for socialising and less formal access to infor-mation about caring for others, while also caring for yourself.

By connecting with others caring in a like situa-tion, you can share experiences, gain support, minimise social isolation and access information that will help you both live healthier lives.

Younger Onset Dementia People under 65 years

The Dementia Australia website has help sheets and videos when you go to www.dementia.org.au and search for younger onset dementia information. OR Dementia Australia has Counsellors and Dementia Consultants who provide initial information for indi-viduals and families.

Jason Kelly is the Dementia Australia Counsellor / Dementia Consultant for South West Victoria. Jason is based at 715 Raglan Parade, Warrnam-bool. His contact details are:

Jason can link individuals, carers and families with Dementia Australia Younger Onset Dementia Key Workers as required. Support is available for eligi-ble people and carers through the National Disabil-ity Insurance Scheme and Dementia Australia.

The Moove and Groove Program at Archie is suitable for people who enjoy exercising to mu-sic; whether they have dementia or not is irrele-vant.

Michelle Steere is our instructor and she is sup-ported by a team of volunteers. Carers are warm-ly invited to attend with the person they are car-ing for.

Hydrotherapy & Arthritis The Archie Hydrotherapy Pool is a steamy 340C which helps to relax muscles and soothe joints that are painful due to arthritis.

Movement that works the body against the re-sistance of water helps improve strength, joint sta-bility and mobility if undertaken regularly.

Weight loss even as little as 5% helps reduce pain from arthritis inflammation. Combine your hydro session with healthier eating and see if it helps re-duce your pain. Greater availability between 1-2pm most days.

What’s it about: It is movement to music si-lent disco style! You’ll wear a headset so you can groove to popular tunes and also hear Michelle’s voice to guide you all the way.

Information Session: Pelvic Floor and Core

The pelvic floor muscles form the base of the group of muscles commonly called the ‘core’. These muscles work with the deep abdominal (tummy) and back muscles and the diaphragm (breathing mus-cle) to support the spine and control the pressure inside the abdomen. Pelvic floor muscles need to be flexible to work as part of the ‘core’, which means that they need to be able to relax as well as lift and hold. Find out about how pelvic floor muscles work, how to strengthen them and keep them flexible. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear. Suitable for men and women.

Social Support Programs at Archie Do you find yourself spending more time at home or alone than you want to? Would you like to get out and about more, perhaps enjoy a nice meal with others and discuss interesting topics or visit

interesting places? If so, this is what happens at our Social Support Programs.

Out and About Community Bus Program: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednes-days and Fridays. The bus picks people up from home and the group spends

time together at various local locations and share a meal together. Of course you will be returned home by bus too.

Vision Group: A small group of v ision impaired people, meet at the Archie on Mondays. They have the support of staff and they enjoy each other ’s company, chat over a cuppa and a meal and also engage in a wide variety of activities.

Men’s Group: This session is run by blokes for blokes on Thursdays. They share a cuppa or a meal and visit interesting places such as the Port of Portland and Sungold Field Days. They

enjoy activities such as billiards, listening to music and watching concerts.

Do you feel left behind when it comes to using the internet? Our Archie iPad volunteers and Year 9 Kings College student volunteers may be able to assist.

Do you have a niggling issue with your tablet or smartphone that you can’t easily resolve? Once again the Year 9 Kings College student volunteers (Judah, Gary, Sam or James) may be able to assist.

When: 2-3pm on Tuesdays during school terms No sessions during school holidays, so that’s Tuesday 24 September and 1 October 2019.

COST: Sessions are free for August and September.

When you book, please be clear about what you need. Will you bring your own device? - If no, we will book an Archie iPad for you to use and time with a volunteer to get you started - If yes, is it an Apple or an Android device? Some of our volun-teers do not use Android devices, but all of us can use Apple devic-es. If you have an android device, the students will assist you. Where possible, volunteers will work with learners one-on-one ini-tially. As learners become more skilled, they can use a device, log into the FREE WIFI at Archie and continue learning on their own.

Steps for Life + is a CPR Awareness Program for community members.

With 70% of ambulance calls for cardiac arrest to private homes, being able to respond when a loved one needs CPR is a great reason to attend.

All involved in Archie exercise sessions and walking and cycling groups are strongly encouraged to attend. The program format is via DVD instruction & practice is on a pillow.

This emergency+ app is available for both apple & android devices. When pressed it gives the co-ordinates of your location to the emergency services. It has been devel-oped by Australia’s emergency services and their Government and Industry partners.

Looking to find out how you can do your bit to stop more plastic bags in our environment? The Boomerang Bags movement may be part of your solution.

You can get together, make bags from reclaimed ma-terials and meet others in your community.

Simple, effective and fun.

Children, adults, young and old - everyone can take part.

Come along to this session to find out about Boomer-ang Bags in Warrnambool, how you can join in - and make your first reusable bag. It’s FREE.

Red Cross RediPlan Presentation

Emergencies include major natural disasters like bushfires and floods and also small cri-ses such as an unexpected hospital stay or a car accident.

You can reduce the impact of emergencies by being prepared.

Rosalie Meadows and Monique Hustler are Red Cross Emergency Services volunteers who will help you make your own ‘RediPlan’ using a free booklet which guides you through the key steps.

Wanted: Meals on Wheels Volunteers

Meals on Wheels is a service provided by the Warrnambool City Council.

Meals are delivered Monday to Friday; from the Meals on Wheels area at the rear of the Archie Gra-ham Building by Volunteers registered with the Warrnambool City Council.

Our Volunteers are invaluable to the service.

Becoming a Meals on Wheels volunteer is a simple way to make a real difference to the lives of local people in need. Our Volunteers provide important social con-tact and regular monitoring of the client’s wellbeing on behalf of the Meals on Wheels Program.

The Warrnambool Community needs more Meals on Wheels Volunteers for regular shifts or for relief sessions when regular volunteers take a break.

Archie Volunteers

In May, about forty Archie Volunteers joined a few hundred other Warrnambool Volunteers to celebrate National Volunteers Week at the Lighthouse Theatre when we watched the movie Bohemian Rhapso-dy. It was a wonderful movie and an enjoyable evening. Thanks Meryl and Bernadette from Volunteers Connect and Xavier and Amanda from the Lighthouse Theatre for making it happen.

Archie Volunteers Afternoon Tea - let’s mingle! Archie Volunteers are invited to afternoon tea and a chance to meet one another and find out about what other groups do as a Volunteer at Archie. Clare Vaughan will facilitate the group discussion.

Improvements at Archie

You may have noticed that the taps in the sinks in all the toilets and kitchens at Archie have re-cently been updated to lever style handles to make it easier for everyone to use them.

This is an example of Universal Design which is creating an environment that can be used by all people, regardless of their age, size, disability or ability.

Petanque Each Thursday at 2pm a diverse group gather at the Pertobe Road Pisteto play pétanque. Call Alan on 0428 564 755 it you’ like to join in.

Boules are available, no prior experience is necessary, and you will be partnered with experienced players to get you started.
