Information Model
Where do floorplans come from?
• GIS
• IMDF
• BIM models
• CAD drawings
• Blueprints/Whiteprints
• Cocktail napkin?
• “I have nothing…”
Potential Data Sources
• If starting with BIM:
- Validate survey and project points
- Validate units in project configuration
- Create rooms and room tags as necessary
- Georeference
- Export to CAD
• Using CAD:
- Georeference
- Fix annotation formatting
Data Preparation Workflow
Preparing your BIM
and CAD data
• Do your floorplans show architectural features?
• Are walls/doors visible?
• Is the CAD labeled/annotated?
• Is the CAD projected?
• Is elevation data available?
• Is the CAD standard across all drawings?
• Is the layer naming consistent?
• Are all features properly connected?
CAD Data Considerations
• Empty layers
• Properties not set as “BYLAYER”
• Feature types collapsed into a single layer
• Lines defining polygon feature that do not close
• Topology errors
• Lines not drawn as polylines (LWPOLYLINE)
• Donuts draw as additional polyline/polygon features
• Using ellipses, splines, or arcs
• Annotation does not reside within their associated polygon features
What can make CAD bad?
• Annotation makes significant use of leader lines
• The DWG file contains objects like: hatch, solid, xref, line, dimension line, groups,
unused clocks, unused line types, unused hatch styles, etc.
• The drawing has elevation, width, and thickness
• The drawing has 3D objects
• The drawing has proxy objects
• Layers are off instead of frozen
• External references are bound using the Insert option
What can make CAD bad?
• Install ArcGIS Indoors for Pro
- Install ArcGIS Pro Indoors Product Data
• Load CAD data into Indoors
- Review CAD drawings
- Configure excel mapping file
- Create Indoors geodatabase
- Import CAD using Floorplan To Indoors
• Review Indoor data for quality issues
- Validate topology
- Execute Data Reviewer batch jobs
Data Transformation Workflow
• Enable routing
- Update Unit Z values
- Create Points of Interest for navigable spaces
- Generate Indoors network
• Prepare a workplace map
- Update the Indoors Configuration and Categories tables
- Share the network service
- Share the configured Indoors web map
