WHO CREATED THE MONUMENT?

Jean Chalgrin (Laid down the foundation for the

construction)

The work was taken over by Louis-Robert Goust

(Chalgrin’s former pupil), after the architect and

designer, Jean Chalgrin, died in 1811. Unfortunately,

construction was halted in April 1814 after imperial

defeat and invasion.

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought

and died for France in the French Revolutionary and

the Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French

victories and generals inscribed on its inner and

outer surfaces.

August 15, 1806 (Napolean’s birthday) – July 29,

Construction began on Napoleon's birthday

Beneath the Arc de Triomphe rests the Tomb of the

Unknown Soldier, which commemorates soldiers who

lost their lives during World War I.

It is the second-largest Arc in the world. The

biggest one being in North Korea.
