GUIDELINES INSTALLATION OF KILOMETRE POST
GUIDELINES FOR THE INSTALLATION OFKILOMETRE POST CONTENTSI, Introduction
In line with the Government's policyon metrication, the kilometre post wasintroduced in the mid 1970's to replacethe milestone. During the course of timethe original design encountered numer-ous shortfalls and inadequacies such asthe legibility of the letterings, spacing ofthe post and type of information provid-ed. As a result of the above deficienciesseveral states took the initiative to put uptheir own design, resulting in non-4niformity.
In order to attain a standard kilome-tre post throughout the country, a reviewwas carried out by the Road Branch(Design Unit), The revised design waspresented at a Workshop on RoadStandards in May 1984 and was adopted to replace all existing posts.
The revised post was designed bas-ing on the following objectives :
i. a source of information to the public as regarding the distance toand from cities, towns terminal points and important locations.
ii. to designate the road for administrative purpose.
iii. an inventory for the purpose of road maintenance
iv. a means of locating addresses in particular those addresses locatedoutside the town limits. The post also serves to locate positionof villages or settlement away from the town.
v. an assurance to the road users that they are travelling in the right direction.
II. Design RequirementsThe kilometre post shall consist of
two types to be installed together at dif-ferent spacing on all Federal Roads. The two types shall be designated asType A and Type B.
1. Type A1.1 Shape
The shape shall be of a V - sectionof thickness 50mm. The detailed dimen-sions are as shown in Appendix 1
1.2 Material The material shall be concrete of mix
1:1.5:3 - 19mm. The concrete shall havea minimum crushing cube strength of 25N/mm2 at 28 days and shall comply withthe recommendations in CP 110(1972)The concrete shall be reinforcedwith wire meshing of size 1 SWG. at100mm spacing complying with BS.4483. The details of reinforcements areas shown in Appendix I.
1.3 Interval The post shall be installed at every 5
kilometre spacing or at least one shallbe planted if the distance between twoimportant locations is less than 5 km.
1.4 Information1.4.1 The information written on theface shall be both the destination nameand the distance to the destination. Thedestination shall be of two, one primaryand the other secondary. On roadswhere there is no secondary destinationahead the post shall only show thename of the primary destination and the

distance to it. Primary and secondarydestinations are generally define& asbelow:-
Primary destinations are:Federal Capital, State capitals, ports
of disembarkation and terminal points.Secondary destinations are:
District capitals, intersection pointsand other important towns.
A list of the primary and secondarydestinations for Peninsular Malaysia isas shown in Appendix IV together withtheir abbreviated form.
It is to be noted that some of the sec-ondary destinations listed in Appendix IVare designated as primary destinationsfor certain roads.
The arrangement of the letteringsand numerals is as shown by a typicalexample in Appendix I. The informationshall be written on both the longer outerfacesof the post.1.4.2 A route-marker in the form of astandard JKR logo shall be fixed to boththe longer outer facesof the post to indi-cate the number of the route.
1.5 Benchmark A brass benchmark supplied by the
Survey Department shall be cast intothe concrete foundation as shown inAppendix III. The reduced level of thebenchmark shall be determined by theSurvey Department. The SurveyDepartment shall be informed of anyphysical movement of the concretefoundation to enable them to redeter-mine the reduced level of the bench-mark .
2. Type B
2.1Shape The shape shall be of a rectangulation
section of thickness 5*)0 mm. Thedetailed dimensions are as given inAppendix II.
2.2Material The material and specifications
shall be as stated under sub-clause 1.2
2.3Interval The post shall be placed at every
1 km except the fifth post which will bereplaced by Type A.
2.4 Information The post shall indicate the primary
destination and the distance to the pri-mary destination. The primary destina-tion is as defined under subclause1.4.1. A list of primary destinations forPost Type B and their abbreviations isas shown in Appendix111. 3.General(For both type A and Type B).
3.1 Colour3.1.1 The colour of the post andfoundation shall be in white.
3.1.2 The destination letterings anddistance numerals shall be in silverwhite on blue background. The numer-al for the route marker shall be in blackon yellow background (For Type A only)
3.1.3 The colour shall comply to thefollowing:
a.Blue - No 109 Middle Blue B.S. 381 C: 1964
b.Yellow - No. 356 Golden Yellow B.S 381 C:1964
c. White - To comply with clause 1.3.2 B.S. 873 Part 2 1973. Reflection factor not less than 0.8and the day light luminance factornot less than 0.6

3.1.3 The colour shall comply to thefollowing:
a.Blue - No 109 Middle Blue B.S. 381 C: 1964
b.Yellow - No. 356 Golden Yellow B.S 381 C:1964
c. White - To comply with clause 1.3.2 B.S. 873 Part 2 1973. Reflection factor not less than 0.8and the day light luminance factornot less than 0.6
d.Black - To comply with Clause 1.3.3 B.S. 873 Part 2 1973. Reflection factor not more than 0.02.
e.For the Chromaticity Colour Coordinates refer to Appendix A.
3.2 Aluminium blankThis shall be of wrought alminium
sheet conforming to B.S 1470: 1072and B.S. 4300/6: 1969 (Suplementary;.It shall be of 1 mm thick with a thick-ness tolerances t 0.06mm
3.3 Retro-reflective sheetingThis shall be of high intensity grade.
The sheeting shall consist of sphericallens elements embedded within a trans-parent plastic having a smooth flat outersurface. The requirements for encapsu-lated lens wide angle flat top reflectivesheeting are as tabulated below:
The photometric performance of thereflective sheeting shall satisfy the fol-lowing conditions:
i. The average luminance shall be between 43 and 108 cd/m2
ii. The maximum luminance shall not exceed 323 cd/m2
iii. There shall be a minimum luminance variation. The distribution of illumination shall be reasonably
uniform and the retro-reflective sign shall not present a patchy appearance.
The retro-reflective sheeting shall beadhered securely onto the aluminiumblank by means of a vacuum applicator. The adhesive bond shall not be lessthan 3.5N/mm2 when tested in singleshear. The transparent colours are tc beapplied to the reflective sheeting by theconventional silk screen process.
3.4 Epoxy bonder The aluminium blank shall be
adhered to the concrete surface and byan approved epoxy bonder. It shall have a minimum tensile bondstrength and shear bond strength of 3.5N/mm2 and 2.1N/mm2 respectively.
3.5 Letterings and NumeralsThe height of the numerals shall be
100mm for both Type A and B. Theheight of the letterings to indicate thedestination shall be 80 mm for Type Aand 70 mm for Type B. The height how-ever may be reduced to no less than 60mm for certain excessively long namewhich cannot be abbreviated. Both thenumerals and letterings shall be ofSeries 2 Standard
3.6 Location3.6.1 The post shall be planted onthe left side of the road if the motorist isheading north and east. If the motorist isheading north-east or north-west, it shallalso be planted on the left.
3.6.2 On divided roads the post shall beplanted on the left side of each carriage-way. The posts on both sides of the car-riageway shall be directly opposite eachother.3.6.3 The post shall be planted at 2

metres from the edge of the carriage-way or at the outer edge of the roadshoulder whichever is the lesser.
3.6.4 In general the distance indicatedon the post shall refer to the distance tothe General Post Office (for large towns)and Post Office (for smaller towns) ofthe destination.3.7 Reference NumberA reference number for the purpose ofroad maintenance will be given for eachpost (both Type A and B) by Ibu PejabatJKR, Cawangan Jalan, UnitPenyelenggaraan.
