ABOUT THE ARA

To improve the quality of annual, sustainability and integrated reporting by organisations in Australia, New Zealand and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

To raise awareness among the leaders and managers of organisations of the need for complete, open, honest, transparent and timely disclosure of information to stakeholders.

To enable private sector, public sector and not-for-profit organisations in Australia, New Zealand and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region to be highly effective in communicating financial, business and sustainability-related information.

To create greater community understanding of the purposes of organisations, about how they operate and the results they achieve.

To create greater community awareness of valid and objective measures of organisational performance, and greater understanding of the results an organisation has achieved.

In 1950 a group of leading business people established awards for excellence in preparing annual reports to improve the standards of financial reporting and communicating with stakeholders in Australia. These Awards, now known as the Australasian Reporting Awards (ARA) have been presented each year for 67 years.

The Awards are administered by Australasian Reporting Awards Limited, an independent not-for-profit organisation run by volunteer professionals from the business, government and not-for-profit sectors, with the support of professional bodies concerned with the quality of financial and business reporting.

The Awards provide all organisations that produce an annual report an opportunity to benchmark their annual reports against the ARA criteria which are based on world best practice. In the General Award, Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are presented to recognise the achievement of a high standard.

Competitive Special Awards are presented in specific areas of reporting such as Governance, Sustainability, Work Health and Safety, Online Reporting, Integrated Reporting and Communication.

The ARA contributes to ongoing improvement in the quality of reporting by:

• Preparing and widely distributing criteria based on world best practice as guidelines for preparing an annual report;

• Conducting an annual seminar on reporting;

• Recognising excellence in reporting with Gold Silver and Bronze Awards; and

• Providing constructive feedback to organisations that enter the Awards.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARA CHAIRMAN

Perspectives on Annual Reporting from Home and Abroad

The Australasian Reporting Awards process is designed to help those involved in preparing their organisation’s annual report.

This process includes developing criteria for annual reporting based on world best practice; evaluating reports and presenting Awards which recognise and reward high performance in meeting the criteria; an opportunity for one-on-one customised feedback and advice; and presentation of an informative annual Seminar on Reporting which addresses key issues and developments.

The 2017 ARA Seminar on Reporting will comprise a mix of presentations that will focus respectively on the benefits of effective annual reporting, trends in annual reporting; and practical advice (hints and tips) on how to go about preparing a more effective annual report.

Rapid changes in communications technology over recent years make it timely to identify technologies now available to assist with content management and presentation, and to prepare the annual report in different formats to meet the needs of different audiences. In this Seminar, speakers will present global perspectives and share their experiences with new trends and new technologies to raise participant’s awareness of the options now available.

For both newcomers to annual reporting, and those who have prepared successful reports for a number of years, this Seminar promises to provide interesting new information and fresh ideas that may be applied to their next report to help make it great.

I urge everyone involved in annual reporting to attend the Seminar, and entrants in the 2017 Awards to arrange to have a feedback session on their last report to benefit fully from the ARA process.

Andrew Greaves BA Econ FCPA, FICANZ Auditor-General of Victoria

Integrated reporting provides a holistic view of an organisation's business performance which extends far beyond the financial bottom line. It can provide a more complete picture of an organisation's performance and value to the outside world, and identify potential future risks and opportunities.

Andrew Greaves will share his views on the merits of the integrated reporting model and explore: • The key differences between

integrated reporting and current business practices.

• How de-cluttering your annual report can lead to greater transparency.

• How sharing results on financial and non-financial metrics helps readers to understand business outcomes and the outlook for the future.

Andrew has more than 30 years’ experience in public sector external and internal audit at the federal, state and local government levels. He was the Auditor-General of Queensland from 2011 to 2016 and has been Auditor General of Victoria since September 2016. From 2003 to 2011 he held senior roles at VAGO.

He is an Executive Fellow of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government, a Fellow of CPA Australia, and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

The rise in the use of digital media gives organisations priceless opportunities to communicate about their sustainability activities in an illustrative, relatable and authentic way to break down barriers and build credibility.

Navigating the sustainability terrain can be tricky. The challenge is to meet the increasing demands for transparency and ‘hard facts’ (eg. from investors) whilst also engaging the general public.

By repurposing material from the sustainability report and tailoring it for different digital channels, organisations can directly target particular special interest stakeholder groups, or reach out broadly to a much wider audience.

Nova Fusion is a leading annual report agency in Malaysia which has strengths in concept, design and content innovation across all forms of print and digital media. It differentiates itself by offering advisory services on content, best practice reporting and the latest listing requirements, and services more than 400 clients across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Erwin Groenendal Co-Founder and Product Director Tangelo Software The Netherlands/New York

Erwin Groenendal will discuss several real-world examples to illustrate the latest trends, developments, and creative innovations in annual reporting in other countries. While all annual reports share similar goals they take vastly different forms across the world.

He will draw on Tangelo’s experiences in facilitating annual reports across Asia, Australia, Europe and North America, to explore how global developments in annual reporting enable more effective communication, and examine the role of national regulations in shaping different annual report formats.

Erwin earned a Masters in Information Technology at Amsterdam’s VU University and spent several years at Oracle before co-founding Tangelo Software. Tangelo’s collaborative cloud-based platform simplifies the process of creating, managing and publishing annual reports, and makes it easy to publish multiple formats from a single source.

Erwin has a deep understanding of annual reporting practices across countries, local regulations, rising trends and disruptive development, especially in digital investor relations communications.

Stephen Varady CSM ARA Director, Chair Awards Committee and Co-ordinator, State and Federal Public Administration Sector

Setting the scene for your performance story Stephen believes that, just like a good book, an annual report should set the scene for the reader. It should introduce the story the organisation wants to tell and engage readers by helping them to understand how their organisation relates to them and persuade them to continue reading. He will discuss fundamental elements and methods for communicating about them using examples from this year’s ARA entries to illustrate key points.

Stephen is respected nationally as a facilitator, public speaker and as an authority on all aspects of corporate performance management and annual reporting. He has had extensive experience in local Government following a career in the Australian Army.
