  • AR550 INSTALLATION GUIDE

Step # 1 This unit can be mounted on top of dash, underdash etc. The bracket may be reversed as necessary. Locate intercom away from ignition boxes and other electronics to avoid interference.

Shown above is the AR 550 rear panel. This is where all headset, PTT and radio connections will originate. (the 9 pin Molex connector used for audio out, audio-in (Mp3, XM) and cell / satphone).

  • Step#2 Connect red power lead and black gound wire to a main power buss or directly to the battery (preferred). This will minimize ignition or alternator noise.

Step #3 After a suitable mounting location is determined run the headset cables (ie. I0461 6ft., I0466 9ft., I0460 12 ft. I0465 16ft) to the seats in the vehicle. If there will be more than (4) locations either a (1) place expansion module (AC1-PRX) or a (4) place expansion module (AC4-PRX) will also be required. A P0735 cable plugged in to the intercom expansion port will also be required. Make sure all Headset cables will not interfere with moving parts. Run headset cables thru seatbelt slots in seats or along shoulder Harnesses if helmets will be used occasionally. Plug cables into respective TA5ML jacks on intercom rear panel.

  • Step #4 Auxiliary in for XM radio or Ipods can be plugged directly into the front panel Or connected thru the 9 pin molex connector .See chart for pin-outs. In car cameras or Cellphones can also be interfaced using this connector. (If not used, zip tie out of the way)

Step # 5 If a Two-Way radio is to be used for communication with other vehicles or to a base camp, pit crew or aircraft the proper radio adapter for the radio will be used and connected to the "Radio" connector on the rear panel of the intercom. Connect the other end to the radio. Most radios require using the external speaker jack to provide radio receive audio signal to the intercom. Step # 6 PTT Switches. The AR550 is a "VOX " intercom and does not require PTT buttons unless a two-way radio is connected to the system. The PTT will be depressed when the radio is keyed to talk to another party. There are two types of PTT switches, Hole mount (PO520) or Velcro mount (P0505) can be used depending on installation requirements.

    P0520(hole mount) P0505(Velcro mount)

  • Attach the PTT coiled cord to P0730 adapter / gender changer extensions and then plug into the respective PTT jacks on the rear panel of the intercom. Note: It is important that the driver and co driver cables are installed correctly for proper signal output to the two-way radio. Step # 7 Headset connection. Use I0450 (straight cord) or I0451 (coiled cord) to adapt from the headset TA5ML connector to the I0460, I0461, I0465 etc. cables that have been run to the seats from the intercom. If helmets are being used they will plug in direct. Step # 8 Power up and test system. Adjust volume and squelch threshold with front panel controls. If a two-way radio is used adjust radio gain on the side of the intercom for proper transmit audio level using another radio. Retest with engine running. If a music input is being used verify that the music mutes using intercom or two-way radio .
