PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“Greetings to all of you!”

It is time again to bother you with our Annual Return, Which by requirement has to be done till Christ returns; I pray it will not bore you as many things do, Which will diminish your passion on heavenly things too.

Resolve therefore to show more interest in our institution, And give us your constructive criticism & heavenly visions; Alone we can only see something bright but the rest darkly, But with your input we can see the rest more brightly; Therefore collectively we can do more good in our pilgrimage, Come forward now to serve the Lord whatever your age!

Some of our writings may act like the rays of the sun, Giving some: encouragement, comfort & fun; But to many they are no big deals, Nothing to register and nothing to put in view; Therefore often we have to encourage ourselves not to lose heart, Quietly & humbly we even have to do ourselves some jumpstarts; After all our job is often like flogging a dead horse, We pray if we cannot motivate them at least forget us not!

“Praise the Lord!”

Joshua Ong Tatt Poh President, The YMCA of Kuala Lumpur (By His Grace)

HONORARY SECRETARY’S WORDS

We’ve just come through an incredible year of serving the community! Not just new facilities, but new opportunities, forming of new clubs, forging new partnerships and really creating new connections for people to the YMCA.

While the economy continued to recover in 2011, our momentum is to keep on moving forward by connecting people to the Y in numerous ways. The year has seen us going through from the Tsunami stricken Japan, earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, to the floods in Thailand nearing the end of 2011.

In the things that we do, we always practice the simple rule of “Can we do something about it?” Rather than “Not doing anything”.

As the YMCA of Kuala Lumpur enters its 106th year of service, we have to be more vibrant in meeting the ever changing needs of the community that was once a squatters’ area which has now turned into a city and also a transportation hub.

As we re-align and strategize our workforce, we are tested on our organisational capacity and our resource limitations. Our building is old, ailing and needs repair all the time, hence the hostel rooms were renovated this year and we are gearing ourselves for a better service to come as we serve the people that visit the Y.

The Y accomplishes its community services with the essential help of a community of supporters — individuals, foundations, associations, corporations and even Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM)— who share our vision of a brighter future.

You are our partners in making tomorrow better for all, as we work together to help others grow, thrive and give back to our community. We want to thank all who share the Y’s mission with your donations and timeless efforts.

To our staff, I offer my sincere thanks and appreciation. And not forgetting the support of the Board of YMCA KL to steer this big ship.

It has been an honour to serve in this current Board that continues to strengthen in its capacity to strategically lead the organisation and to carry out its governance role.

YMCA KL DEPARTMENT REPORT

OPERATIONS MANAGER’S REPORT The YMCA of Kuala Lumpur has continued to adapt and improve to meet the changing requirements of communities, increasing demand for quality programmes and services, and tightening economic conditions. There is no doubt the economic situation remained challenging but despite this, overall revenue for the YMCA remained steady. Obtaining funding to deliver existing and develop new programmes and services for our youth continues to be our greatest challenge as the youth nowadays are not independent enough hence the staff of YMCA comes into play. So the fee that someone pays to be a member of the YMCA is probably helping to train a youth volunteer. We know the general public often has not heard much of the YMCA except for the song by the Village People. While we strive to promote ourselves with more programmes to bring in the crowd and to mark our existence, amongst the often unique needs of the various communities, we retain our strong brand image and with the idea of turning around the YMCA to be more youthful and vibrant to meet its mission:

TO REACH OUT AND UNITE YOUNG PEOPLE BY PROVIDING THEM WHOLESOME ACTIVITIES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BODY, MIND & SPIRIT FOR THE EXTENSION OF

HIS KINGDOM & SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY. We have successfully organised a Youth Sports Carnival in September, sports clinics, Workshops for the general members and ending the year with a Children’s Christmas Community Celebration for the underprivileged, Hari OKU with Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat and a Table Tennis Championship all in December, 2011. It is indeed a busy year but guess what? Things will be busier the next year as I see the things we have in store to achieve our mission as above to work towards the Vision:

TO BE THE LEADING CHRISTIAN YOUTH AND COMMUNITY ORGANISATION IN MALAYSIA.

I want to thank all my colleagues who had worked along me and together with me so that we can be where we are today working for a better tomorrow. Shalom,

Jimmy Ho Operations Manager

YMCA KL HOSTEL & FACILITIES The Hostel & Facilities Department is divided into 3 sections, the Front Office, Housekeeping and the Maintenance & Security. The function of the department is to ensure that all members and guests will have a comfortable place to stay, good facilities & excellent service. Renovations at the rooms started last year but ended earlier this year. Meantime, we plan to convert a room into a dance studio next year. The department is also in the midst of re-branding the hostel to International House to upgrade our image in providing better service to our members. Our Vision “Home Away From Home” and our

Mission is “To propel the image and spirit through performance in service that benefits the entire membership”.

"I offer my warmest regards to the YMCA for its continuous upgrading of Hostel Facilities and still being affordable. The YMCA has offered me not only facilities but most importantly convenience throughout my stay with efficient service from the front desk staff. All the best"

Madame Alice and other course mates after achieving the DELF A1 and DELF A2, the

International French Language Proficiency Diploma awarded by the CIEP/French Ministry of Education.

EDUCATION & TRAINING For many years, the YMCA has been providing intensive language courses for both the working adults and students who need to acquire additional language skills for personal or professional reasons. Today, our language courses not only have attracted a large number of participation among the local residents but there have been an increasing number of foreign students in courses like Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin. In year 2011, we have received a total of 1,768 enrolments for the various language courses conducted. Besides the conducive learning environment and the dedication of our language instructors, the popularity of our courses is also due to the course flexibility, reasonable fees and our strategic location. Extra language enrichment activities are also held to promote social integration among students. The combination of these factors has created an ideal environment for a rewarding learning experience among our students.

PROGRAMMES The YMCA of Kuala Lumpur welcomes everyone. Our programmes and events here enable members and the community of all ages to realize their potential, gain knowledge, and have fun. In line with empowering the whole personality Body, Mind & Spirit, the Programmes Department organizes various programmes which focus on the development for healthy living and social responsibility.

PERSONAL GROOMING WORKSHOP With a looking good, feeling great intention, the YMCA introduced the Personal Grooming workshop to give members a chance to learn how to enhance their image and self-confidence. The YMCA looks to organize more grooming workshops to empower both male and female members in the workforce who would need that special boost of confidence in their everyday work life.

CLAY ART CLASS The Clay art class is an educational programme which promotes learning through the medium of Clay. The class is now introduced as the Y – Clay programme and is open to all interested members from the age of 7 and above.

"We appreciate YMCA KL and Madame Alice

for maintaining the quality of learning environment at an

affordable cost. We have also participated

in many outdoor learning activities such

as The French Film & Art Festival, the Zoo,

Food tasting at French restaurants, Christmas celebrations and more.

An annual gathering was also created by

Madame Alice called "Chit Chat en Français" that was truly an event

for all students with common interest in French language to interact and share

their thoughts while building friendship.

Merci beaucoup. "

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP Photography has long been a passion to many people from various groups of ages. As quoted by Eudora Welty, “good snapshot stops a moment from running away” and hence driven by this quote, the Photography workshop was introduced to give members a chance to learn on how professional photographers work to get that perfect picture. The workshop was conducted by Mr Brian Moh, a photographer from The Star newspaper where he shared his knowledge on the usage of the DSLR camera such as the exposure control, shutter speed and many more.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS COMMUNITY CELEBRATION 2011 Christmas and Santa Claus arrived early for children from the PDK Selayang, Ti Ratana Welfare Home, Rumah Sayangan, Shelter Home, Rumah Charis, Rumah Titian Kasih and Children of Deaf Adults (CODA) under the Pusat Majudiri Y of YMCA KL as they were invited to the YMCA KL Children’s Christmas Community Celebration. The children were welcomed with a variety of game stalls created by volunteers from MCKL, YMCA and IBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd. They were also given special presents that were collected through the YMCA KL Youth’s charity project called “The Wishing Tree”. This inspired project began in early October 2011, where wishes from

the children were hung on a beautifully decorated Christmas tree at the YMCA KL Lobby and generous donors came in to sponsor these children’s wishes. The YMCA of Kuala Lumpur would like to thank all donors, sponsors, volunteers and members who took their time to contribute and support this heartwarming event.

"I would like to thank the YMCA for providing me with the opportunity to volunteer in this meaningful event. It was a great experience working with volunteers from various backgrounds but most importantly we all worked for the same purpose of putting a smile on the children’s faces."

SPORTS & RECREATION The Sports and Recreation Department have constantly offered a variety of recreational and fitness activities to our YMCA KL members to promote not only a healthy lifestyle, but also a fitting foundation for competitive sportsmanship and social sports.

YMCA KL YOUTH SPORTS CARNIVAL The YMCA was brought to life when the Youth Sports Carnival took place in conjunction with the Malaysia Day Celebration on 16 September 2011. Many members from the community within the age range of 14 to 30 took part in this event which consists of Volleyball,

Basketball and Street Soccer. It was indeed a diversified crowd as Youth from all races and even the deaf joined in to make the event a success. The highlight of the Carnival was when the Silent Killer Team represented by the Deaf Teens took 2nd place for the 3 on 3 Under 18 Basketball Competition. The event ended with many tired but happy participants who look forward to the next Youth Sports Carnival.

YMCA HOLIDAY BASKETBALL CAMP The YMCA Holiday Basketball Camp commenced on the 28th of November to allow children and teenagers to learn fundamentals of basketball, foster leadership and teamwork. The camp was divided into 2 groups which lasted for four days each. The camp proved to be a beneficial one where all participants learned the fundamentals of basketball, gained new friends and most of all; everyone had fun throughout the process.

“We are honoured to be invited to

participate in the YMCA Youth Sports Carnival. We really look forward to the

coming Youth Sports Carnival next year! “

YMCA KL TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011 The YMCA KL Table Tennis Team Championship with the objective of promoting the game of table tennis was held on the 10 – 11th December. The event attracted a total of 16 teams which consisted of many national and state level players such as the Malaysian top seed, Mohd Shakirin. After two days of fierce and keenly contested competition, Team Bay 21 walked away with the Grand prize of RM2,000 after beating Team Eng Choon Klang 3 -1 in the Finals.

MARTIAL ARTS For centuries, the martial arts were the "warrior's way", which is a system used to defend one's family and country. However over the course of time, the usage of martial arts has changed drastically. Besides protecting oneself, martial arts can play an important role in maintaining a healthy body, benefiting people in good health as well as those who suffer from cognitive, developmental, and physical disabilities. At the YMCA, we promote healthy living through our Martial Arts classes which are the Aikido classes, the Karate classes, Judo classes and the Kickboxing classes.

DANCE CLASSES Music has often played a big role to drive individuals into moving their bodies and following the beat or rhythm. However, one may feel the awkwardness or shyness to move freely when there are good dancers in the crowd or on the dance floor. Worry no more as YMCA offers dance classes that will definitely make you feel good and at the same time look great when it is time to dance.

“When I was approached by the YMCA KL with regards to the prospect of organizing a 2011 championship, my instant response was “Yes”. Organizing a tournament is the most meaningful event for any sports as it alleviates the standard of the sport, attracts audiences / enthusiasts and creates a good arena for sportsmen / sportswomen / acquaintances to meet each other and to discuss about their subject of common interest”

CHRISTIAN IDENTITY & MISSION The Christian Identity & Mission reaches out and provide to the community through Christian principles and practices in body, mind and spirit. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

WORSHIP & SERVICE The Easter Service message was delivered by the Rev. Justin Clarance from the Tamil Methodist Church in Brickfields. The singing group of 3rd KL BB, “The Messengers”, presented an item. For over a century the YMCA and YWCA movements have issued a joint call to pray in the month of November as an important reminder of the spiritual vision that drives their effort to create a better world for all people. The YWCA-YMCA World Week of Prayer and World Fellowship presents an opportunity for the YWCA and YMCA movements to pray and act together on a shared issue with members around the world. The Week of Prayer was from 13-19 November 2011 with the theme, “A voice to influence : Young people speaking out for rights and justice.” The joint YWCA-YMCA worship was held at the YWCA PJ on 16 November 2011.

The movie “Amazing Grace” screened in August 2011 was well received by an audience of around 40. Although requests were received from them for more Christian Movies, Dewan Lee Kong Chian is almost always fully booked every day. The small and personal prayer and worship groups within the YMCA continue to meet every Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday to meet the spiritual needs of members. The Gideons continue to receive many prayer requests and we thank Mr.

Ivan Christie and Mr. Lim Chee Sing for their efforts. The YMCA 106th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service was held on 27 October 2011 amongst the Board of Directors and staff.

SAMARITAN MINISTRIES “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in…” Matthew 25:35 The Samaritan Ministries Brickfields street feeding project came under the portfolio of the CIM Committee in October 2011. The project launched on 18 August 2007 is to show Christian love to the poor, distressed, underprivileged and those with addictions, by providing them with nourishment, medical aid, counseling and spiritual support. As you would have noticed, come rain or shine, a team of dedicated volunteers is on hand every Saturday to provide meals for 130 people. The Samaritan Ministries is a joint effort of the YMCA of KL, Trinity Methodist Church PJ and Kenosis Home.

“It was 4 years ago that I joined BB and what

3RD KUALA LUMPUR BOYS’ BRIGADE The most active group of young people under the CIM is the 3rd KL Boys’

Brigade. Under the leadership of Captain Tan Chee Kiong, the company grew from 129 members in 2010 to 141 Boys in

2011. The year kicked off with an exciting visit on board the USS Carl Vinson in January 2011. Doing what boys like best, camps were held in FRIM Kepong, Benum Hill, Seremban, Cameron Highlands, and Malacca. Workshops in Song Leading and a CPR course were organised. The 54th Enrolment Service & Awards Day, the most important event of the year was held in July. The Band played at several functions and participated at the World Band Percussion Competition held in KL. The year ended with a Christmas performance

by the Band and Singing Goup at the Selangor State Christmas Celebration performance at State level. The Boys worked with the Blind from the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) on two occasions and helped organise a lantern festival in the YMCA for them. The 3rd KL BB Dream Statement is “to bring out the best in our Boys, giving them the opportunity to discover, recognise and develop their full potential as worthy Malaysians in the community for the glory of God.”

SENIOR CITIZENS’ CLUB This exclusive club in the YMCA is strictly for members who have reached 55 years of age who wish to add life to their years! The mean age is from 55 to 96 years with an average of 75.5 years. The Club decided to outreach to the less privileged and invited 20 Blind to participate at their Chinese New Year Dinner and Dance. It was a treat as the YMCA KL President was in attendance and serenaded the guests. The 27th Anniversary Lunch held in May was on a small scale with a turnout of 113

members. At the invitation of the SCC of YMCA Penang to their 25th Anniversary celebration, a contingent of 28 members attended the Dinner and Dance in Penang in July. The trip also included a tour to Balik Pulau and a durian buffet, the Interactive Centre and Gallery of the National Park, Straits Quay, a Nyonya buffet dinner plus the opportunity to sample hawker fare. To celebrate Senior Citizens day, a day trip to Tanjung Sepat was

organised in October. The Club continues to be a reference centre for students. During the year, students from the International Medical University (IMU) and University Putra Malaysia (UPM) carried out observation and research at the YMCA.

“My friends and the band attracted me to join the BB about 3 years ago. The BB has taught me to be ready for the future. Sometimes BB can be difficult and challenging but as the saying goes, No Pain No Gain. I am glad that I've joined the BB.”

JACKIE THONG, Lance Corporal of 3rd KLBB

“We are truly amazed to see how active the senior citizens are. It is wonderful that your members are able to realise their full potential for physical, social and mental well-being throughout their life and to participate actively in society.”

PUSAT MAJUDIRI Y SELF RELIANCE CENTRE FOR THE DEAF

The first Deaf Youth Club was established in 1973 and the Club celebrated the 38th Anniversary with a variety show, “Hot Gossip”. The Club provides opportunities for the development of Deaf adults and a platform for social networking. The Deaf Club Committee under the leadership of P. Haymasuthan had an eventful year. They continued to hold workshops and social outings, including a tour to Korea. It was the first time that they organised a Walkabout Treasure Hunt around Brickfields and held their 6th Bowling Competition. Three members participated in a YMCA regional conference – the YMCA Youth Assembly, which brought together 212 youth from the Asia-Pacific region.

In the promotion of early education, the PMY focuses on three programmes – Parent-Infant programme (PIP); Pre-school education and Children of Deaf Adults (CODA)

Programme. The PMY had 26 children attending the programmes on a regular basis. We are blessed with a team of dedicated volunteers and teachers who make sure that the programmes are carried out without interruption. In December 2011, three of our pre-schoolers graduated to enter into primary education.

We set up exhibition booths at every opportunity to bring about awareness of deafness and its impact on society. PMY was actively involved in advocacy not only for the Deaf but for the disabled through the Barrier-free Environment and Accessible Transport (BEAT) group, advocating for accessibility to trains, LRT, planes, stations and airports. The voice of the disabled must be heard!

Social Integration has always been a thrust of the PMY. Both PMY and Deaf Club have opened their doors to be more inclusive where possible. Most of their social activities are open to members of the YMCA and we would encourage and welcome our “Hearing” members to join in.

Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. In our opinion, the financial statements have been properly drawn up in accordance with Private Entities Reporting Standards and the Companies Act 1965 in Malaysia so as to give a true and fair view of the financial position of the Association as of December 31, 2011 and of its financial performance and cash flows for the year then ended.

THE YOUNG MEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF KUALA LUMPUR

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS – DECEMBER 31, 2011

1. PRINCIPAL OBJECTS / ACTIVITY The Association is a Christian movement which is not operated or conducted for profit and exclusively seeks to provide its members, irrespective of class, race and nationality, with opportunities for the development of the whole personality. There have been no significant changes in the nature of the objects / activity of the Association during the year.

2. BASIS OF PREPARATION The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with applicable approved Accounting Standards in Malaysia and the provisions of the rules and regulations of the Association.

3. DATE OF AUTHORISATION OF ISSUE The financial statements were authorised for issue by the management committee on

4. SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

(a) Basis of Accounting The financial statements of the Association have been prepared under the historical cost convention, unless otherwise indicated.

(b) Property, Plant and Equipment Property, plant and equipment are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and less any impairment losses. Capital work-in-progress is stated at cost and not depreciated. Capital work-in-progress comprises contractors’ payments and directly attributable costs incurred in preparing these assets for their intended use. Depreciation on assets under construction commences when the assets are ready for their intended use. Depreciation is calculated to write off the book value on a straight line basis at an annual rate of 20%. Leasehold land and building is amortised over the period of lease of 58 years.

(c) Investments - Unquoted Investment held as non current asset is stated at cost. Provision is made for impairment if in the opinion of the management committee, there has been a permanent impairment of the investment.

(d) Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents included cash in hand, bank balances and deposits with licensed banks net of bank overdrafts.

31

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS – DECEMBER 31, 2011

(e) Membership Subscription Fee Membership subscription is payable annually upon expiry. Only those subscription which is attributable to the current financial year is recognised as income. Subscription related to periods beyond the current financial year is taken up in the Balance Sheet as Subscription in advance under Sundry payables, deposits and accruals included in the heading of Current Liabilities.

(f) Impairment of Assets The carrying values of assets are reviewed for impairment when there is an indication that the assets might be impaired. Impairment is measured by comparing the carrying values of the assets with their recoverable amounts. The recoverable amount is the higher of an asset’s net selling price and its value in use, which is measured by reference to discounted future cash flows. Recoverable amounts are estimated for individual assets, or if it is not possible, for the cash-generating unit. An impairment loss is charged to the income statement immediately, unless the asset is carried at revalued amount. Any impairment loss of a revalued asset is treated as a revaluation decrease to the extent of previously recognised revaluation surplus for the same asset. Subsequent increase in the recoverable amount of an asset is treated as reversal of the previous impairment loss and is recognised to the extent of the carrying amount of the asset that would have determined (net of amortisation and depreciation) had no impairment loss been recognised. The reversal is recognised in the income statement immediately, unless the asset is carried at revalued amount. A reversal of an impairment loss on a revalued asset is credited directly to revaluation surplus. However, to the extent that an impairment loss on the same revalued asset was previously recognised as an expense in the income statement, a reversal of that impairment loss is recognised as income in the income statement.

(g) Revenue Recognition Income earned for the year is recognised upon receipt.
