Ar-Rahnu Literal meaning : From the Arabic term “Rahn” means constancy, holding and bindingness. Technical meaning: Possessions offered as security for a debt so that the debt will be taken from it in case the debtor failed to pay back the due money. Pawnbroker definition is a dealer licensed to lend money at a specified rate of interest on the security of movable personal property which can be sold if the loan is not repaid within a specified period. Legality ( The sources of ruling) 1. Al Quran Provided by the verse “ If you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then use the receipt of pawned objects” (Al Baqarah :283) Based on the verse, most jurist agreed that taking pawned pbjects is permissible both at home and while travelling. 2. Al – Sunnah Provided b the Hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari that ‘ The prophet (pbuh) bought some food from a Jew and he pawned his iron shield with him.” Another Hadith, Anas r.a said “ The Prophet (pbuh) pawned a shield with a Jew in Madinah and he took from him some barley for his family” The conditions ( later from Web)
