Rush-Henrietta seniorMickey Burke wrappedup his high school crosscountry career with amasterful flourish Satur-day, writing history faraway from the numbingcold of western New York.

Burke kicked in a furi-ous final quarter-mileburst, uphill and downhill,to finish fourth at the FootLocker National Champi-onships in San Diego,Calif. He pointed with awave at the cheerleaders, smiling as he crossed theline in 15 minutes, 20 sec-onds under bright, 60-de-gree sunshine.

It is the highest finishby any of the nine SectionVboys who have raced thefamed Balboa Parkcourse in the event’s 35years. He was 13 secondsbehind the winner.

“I really had to get it to-gether to pull off some-thing big,” Burke said byphone, when told he hadsurpassed John Hork-heimer’s fifth place in1987 for Pittsford. “Thecompetition here wasreally hard and I was los-ing it midway through. If Ihad focused just a little bitmore there, I might havehad a shot at it.

“I’m a little bummed, but hey, fourth at this lev-el is very fine. If there’s aquote here, it’s ‘dare to begreat.’ More history? Yay!It’s why I run.”

He’s the first Section Vrunner to race both, andearn All-America statusat both, national champi-onships — Foot Locker istop 15 and Nike Cross top

20. He was 13th at Nikelast year.

“He lost it a little in themiddle today,” agreed hiscoach, Mike DeMay. “Buthe really pulled it togeth-er on the big hill the sec-ond time around. It lookedlike he was ninth going up.It’s similar to CoronaryHill on our Mendon Westcourse, so he knew what itwould take. He passedfive guys in the last 800meters.”

First time up the climbBurke figured out whatwas needed. He said hecrested the top of it ineighth or ninth, then “Itold myself ‘that’s thepack I need to be with, let’s go for a ride,’ so Iwent after them hard. Ididn’t want to drop backany farther.”

Penfield senior KatieLembo ran a very similarrace to a year ago and was22nd in a field of 40 girlson the 3.1-mile course atBalboa’s Morley Field. Her time of 18 minutes, 11seconds was just sevenseconds slower than ayear ago, when she was21st. Eight Section V girlshave competed in thechampionship.

“I went out with a newstrategy,” she said, “a

slower early pace ... 5:26first mile, about 10 sec-onds slower than lastyear. That way I wasable to pick people offlater and kick more atthe end. I think I was in28th at one point, and Iworked my way up to 22.I’m really happy I got toend on a high note.”

Dave Hennessey, making his secondstraight trip to a fall na-tionals in 38 years ofcoaching at Penfield, said Lembo ran a veryconsistent race.

“It was all good,” hesaid. “The weather. Therace. She is a very happyyoung lady. The North-east girls won the teamtitle and it was nice forher to finish ahead ofthose New York girlswho beat her at states, feds and qualifiers.”

Lembo was the sec-ond New York finisherSaturday after beingfourth New Yorker andninth overall at the qual-ifying race at VanCor-tlandt Park in the Bronxtwo weeks ago. The na-tional winner, in 17:16,won the VanCortlandtqualifier, too — TessaBarrett, a senior fromAbington Heights HighSchool in Waverly, Pa.New York state Federa-tions champion fresh-man Jessica Lawson ofCorning was 27th (18:18)and state public schoolschampion Megan Reillyof Warwick Valley was29th (18:25).

Golson plans to travelto New York on his ownand will visit with theteam, Kelly said. He hasnot talked to Golsonsince he had been read-mitted, saying they hadmissed each other’s tele-

phone calls. But Kellytraveled to Golson’shometown of MyrtleBeach, S.C., on Tuesday tomeet with him.

Golson, who was listedat 185 pounds when NotreDame faced Alabama inthe national champion-ship game last year, looked “physically moremature, probably over200 pounds,” Kelly said.“He looked great, quitefrankly. Great physicalcondition and I think men-tally is really where I sawa young man that under-stands what he’s comingback to.”

The Irish will be look-ing for more from Golson, whom Kelly said stillneeds to beat out fresh-man Malik Zaire, whodidn’t play this season.Golson put up decentnumbers last season, butneeded to be rescued sev-eral times by TommyRees, who started for theIrish this season.

Kelly said he believesGolson is set up to be aleader on the team by theway he handled being sus-pended.

“I think he’s gotten a lotof respect from his team-mates for the manner thathe handled himself. Hetook full accountabilityand responsibility for hisactions,” he said.

Kelly believes Golsonwill now be judged by howhe acts moving forward.

Kelly said he now hasmore trust in Golson.

“He’s done everythingthat we’ve asked him. Ithink he’s added a little bitto that bank of trust overthis period of time. I thinkwe’ll go into this offsea-son expecting him to con-tinue to build on that,” hesaid.

While Golson returns,Kelly also has been deal-ing with the departures ofdefensive coordinatorBob Diaco, who was intro-duced as head coach atConnecticut on Thursday, and offensive coordinatorChuck Martin, who washired as head coach at Mi-ami of Ohio on Dec. 3.

That means the Irishwill be without both oftheir coordinators for thebowl game. Rutgers alsowill be without severalcoaches after firing its de-fensive coordinator, quar-terbacks coach and offen-sive line coach. Kelly saidhe doesn’t expect themoves to have much im-pact on the game.

“It’s hard to put in newschemes at this time be-cause they’re in exams, like we are. You’re notputting in a ton of newschemes. You may accen-tuate one thing or another. But you’re going to lookvery similar to what youare during the season,” hesaid.

Henshaw’s 4 goals propel BrockportStaff reports

ALLEN PARK, Mich. —Detroit Lions coach JimSchwartz isn’t interestedin talking about his job se-curity.

The Lions blew anotherlate lead and lost at homeMonday night to Balti-more, 18-16. The Lions(7-7) have led the NFCNorth much of the season, but may miss the playoffsafter losing four of theirlast five games. Detroit

needs to win its final twogames and hope for a com-bination of losses by divi-sion leader Chicago andGreen Bay to secure aplayoff berth.

If job security is onSchwartz’s mind, it didn’tshow on Tuesday.

“I don’t think it doesany good for me or myteam to keep focusing onthat,” he said after beingasked if he’s worriedabout losing his job. Hedeclined to elaborate onwhat he’s thinking about

his future or if he’s spokenwith owner William ClayFord recently.

“I look at it like we’reone game down with twoto play,” he said. “As muchas it keeps sounding likethe same thing, it’s true.We can’t let anything de-tract from that.”

The luster of the Lions’6-3 start has faded and theteam, which entered lastweekend with the divisionlead, walked off the fieldMonday third in the divi-sion. The Lions are 1-4

since a Nov. 10 win at Chi-cago left them in the driv-er’s seat.

The struggling NewYork Giants come to townSunday for the Lions’home finale and Detroitfinishes the season Dec.29 at Minnesota.

“We’ve had some verywinnable games; very, very winnable games,”safety Glover Quin said.“For us not to win thosegames, it’s heartbreaking. But we’ve got two morethat we can go out and win

and, hey, all you can do isfight to the finish. We’vegot to win our games —hopefully somebodyhelps us out.”

Schwartz, who has losteight straight December/January games as coach, according to STATS, hastwo years left on his con-tract. The franchise hasnot disclosed details ofthe contract extension hesigned after leading theLions to a wild card berthafter the 2011 season.

That was Detroit’s only

winning season underSchwartz, who is 29-49over five seasons.

The coach hardly is theonly man to blame for theLions’ woes.

Quarterback MatthewStafford has thrown nineinterceptions in the lastfour games — includingthree against the Ravens— and receiver CalvinJohnson had a pair ofcritical drops in what hasbeen another standoutseason.

There is an “I’’ in Aqui-nas, but if you watch theLittle Irish play basket-ball you can also see theword “team.”

D.J. Roberts led 10Aquinas players whoscored from the floor with13 points, as the LittleIrish controlled and de-feated Geneva 67-48 in anon-league matchup ofundefeated teams.

Freshman guard Grif-fin Kornaker finishedwith 10 points, includingthree 3-pointers for theLittle Irish. Aquinas willface Buffalo East, the top-ranked Class B team inthe state, during the finalsof the Michael DianettiBasketball Tournamentfor Camp Good Days, 7:30tonight at Aquinas.

The Little Irish are 4-0,despite the departure of2013 Democrat andChronicle All-GreaterRochester guard KyRonAllen from the team lastoffseason.

“A lot of people didn’tthink we would be goodbecause we lost a player,’’Roberts said.

Roberts, who seems tofloat around the rim, alsohad eight rebounds. Thatwas the highest total in astrong collective effort.Aquinas, in Class AA thisseason, outrebounded Ge-neva (6-1) 42-25. That totalincluded seven for the Lit-tle Irish grabbed by Mel-vin Grayson.

What doomed Geneva, which played two compet-itive games against the2013 Section V Class Achampion last season, wasturnovers. A total of 19 ofthose miscues made atough task a little moredifficult.

“We knew what wascoming for us,’’ Geneva

coach Brian Miller saidabout the Aquinas pres-sure defenses. “It’s hardto simulate what they doin practice. I try to havemy team play against sixor seven guys, becausethat’s what it seems likeagainst some of their

pressures.“There are arms, legs

and everything all overthe place. That’s how ath-letic they are. But youknow, some of the turn-overs we’re just silly.’’

Geneva has time towork on those, and the

Panthers should be rele-vant in the Section V ClassA2 Tournament. TerrellJohnson Jr. and Ray SimsJr. can be effectivearound the basket.

Their individual gamesseem to be at their best inthe lane or paint, which is

exactly where Aquinasplayers said they wantedto prevent the Panthersfrom reaching.

“They really didn’thave anyone that couldshoot,’’ Aquinas seniorguard George Grahamsaid.

Geneva made 1 of 10 ofits 3-point shot attempts,and was 16 of 38 overall.Aquinas was not quite hot,but made 6 of 15 3-point-ers.

“The one thing is we’reall about winning thegame,’’ Aquinas coach Mi-chael Grosodonia said.“You see tonight that Grif-fin Kornaker was one ofour leading scorers, andhit some threes.

“The ball went insideand it went back out tohim. He’s a good shooterand made some shots forus. We needed them.’’

Aquinas led by fourpoints after the first quar-ter. That lead was extend-ed with a 13-2 run that in-cluded a 3-pointer by Ear-nest Edwards, who fin-ished with nine points.Four players scored dur-ing the run.

But the Little Irish ad-vantage was back down to11 at halftime. Theyopened the third quarterwith an 11-2 run, fueledpartly by a 3-pointer byKornaker. Geneva re-duced its deficit to 12 witha minute remaining in thethird quarter, only to seeKornaker hit again from3-point range.

That gave Aquinas a45-30 lead, and the small-est lead the Little Irishheld the rest of the gamewas 10.

No doubt, things don’talways go a wrestler’sway, but Gates Chili soph-omore Derek St. James ishaving a good time thesedays.

“I’ve always wanted tobe undeafeated and keepgoing,’’ St. James said.

St. James is still unde-feated, 18-0, after hepinned Clarence sopho-more Dylan Arena on Sat-urday during the secondperiod of the 99-pound fi-nal at Spencerport’sTeike-Bernabi Tourna-ment.

His victory over thenow 19-2 Arena, a finalistat the 2012 Teike-BernabiTournament, is a nice en-try for the Gates Chililightweight’s record. So isthe Monroe County Cham-pionship he won.

The additional boost inconfidence is not all that

bad either. St. James wonone tournament last sea-son, the Bradshaw in Can-andaigua.

“It’s great to finallywin (the tournament inSpencerport),’’ St. Jamessaid. “I’ve been watching

for so many years, I’ve al-ways wanted to be in thefinals.’’

Before St. Jameswalked out of the Spencer-port gymansium, he waspresented the plaque forthe tournament’s most

outstanding lightweightwrestler.

“It feels amazing to fi-nally win it,’’ St. Jamessaid about the tourna-ment. “I didn’t expect towin this. I think I’ll do bet-ter at other tournaments.’’

Gates Chili coach MikeSerper, who said he seesimprovement in St.James’ mat management, expects just that.

“He doesn’t panic,’’Serper said. “His fatherdeserves a lot of credit, hereally puts the time inwith him.

“They make the sacri-fices with him all year.’’

It’s been two yearssince Pittsford’s AlekseiCartagena, a senior atSutherland, transferredfrom East High in Roches-ter. Cartagena followedup a one-point loss in the106 Monroe County tour-nament final with a 5-1win over Iroquois fresh-man Connor Day at Spen-

“It gives me an oppor-tunity to see competitionaround New York state.’’

JAKE ZEMBIEC

School: Aquinas.

Age/class: 15/Sophomore.

Resides: Spencerport.

Position: Quarterback.

Family: Maureen andTom, parents; sister Abby,14.

About me: May be ontrack to play quarterbackat the NCAA’s highestlevel, home of the teamssuch as Alabama, PennState and Ohio State. ...Notre Dame and Syracuseare believed to be amongthe growing pack ofschools that plan to atleast keep an eye onZembiec. ... On MaxPreps’list of 50 high schoolfootball players to watchin the class of 2016 lastyear. ... Second year as theAquinas starting quarter-back, JV starter as aneighth-grader. ... Runner-up in Sports Illustrated’sSports Kid of the Year in2010. ... Grandfather BillHoward played baseballat Aquinas and NotreDame.

When Zembiec beganto play football at the ageof 7, he was a quarter-back, and a rare one ableto throw the ball at thatage. His second season asAquinas’ starting quar-terback ends Sunday inthe Class AA state tourna-ment final versus Mon-roe-Woodbury (12-0) ofSection IX, at 6 p.m. atSyracuse University’sCarrier Dome.

“He can throw an in-terception, throw a touch-down pass, run for atouchdown, he’s alwayslevel,” Battaglia said.

It is something thatcomes in handy for theplaces Zembiec goes andthe situations he’s in.Zembiec may be on hisway up in the world of col-lege football recruiting, where scholarships areoffered to eighth-grad-ers.

“I think he’ll be of-fered by the end of theyear,” Battaglia said.

It is a place where un-derclassmen basicallycompete as they performdrills at elite camps, ascoaches from teams seenon television watch close-ly and evaluate. Zem-biec’s name is familar tosome on the recruitingscene, given that the TomBrady fan has four na-tional all-star footballgames, plus invitations tocamps for older playerson his résumé.

“It’s real fun,” Zem-biec said. “I mean, I’mtrying to make the mostof it because everythinggoes so fast and so crazy. It’s the kind of thing that’sonly going to happenonce. Going to camps, youget to hear guys who havebeen through it talk toyou.

“They say the samething, make the most outof it. That’s what I like totell myself. A lot of guysget caught up beingcocky and posting pic-tures of all the lettersthey get and whatever.I’m really trying to takeadvantage of it and take itall in. I brought (team-mates) Donato (Clemen-te) and A.J. LoBrutto and

Luch (Pietropaolo) toOhio State just to make itan even better experi-ence.”

They are among theAquinas players he callshis brothers, and togeth-er the Little Irish haveheld the No. 1 state rank-ing by the New York StateSportswriters Associa-tion since the first poll inmid-September.

Zembiec’s statisticsearly in the season maynot have made wowedmany people, but theAquinas offense hassince expanded. The Lit-tle Irish clearly have abalanced offense, morelegitimate options to useduring close games, to goalong with a defensethat’s allowed more than10 points just twice in 12games.

“It’s impossible to de-fend everything; whatare you going to do?” Hil-ton coach Rich Lipanisaid. “They are so deep, probably two-deep acrossthe board.

“He has a couple ofyears experience now,and he knows how to ex-ploit things. What do youdo? He can throw and hecan run. He didn’t get theopportunity (to show ev-erything) because theywere winning the gamesby halftime. The onegame he needed to, hedid.”

When Aquinas playedback-to-back high-profilehome games in late Sep-tember, the Little Irish’swins over Buffalo Canisi-us and Urusline (Ohio)came in rain. Zembiec at-tempted a combined totalof 22 passes.

The next game, Zem-biec was 18 of 31 passing,including three touch-down throws, for 300yards against BuffaloSaint Joseph’s.

“We really don’t high-light one person,” Aqui-nas assistant coach DanPincelli said. “It’s not theJake show, it’s not the Do-nato show, it’s not any-one’s show. When youcome to practice, is whenyou actually see what(Zembiec) can do.

“He runs the scoutteam for us. He can makeevery throw, he reallycan. It’s difficult to dosometimes, but you re-

member he’s 15 years old.We ask him to do things. It’s not just throw it to thisguy, it’s this is what thedefense is and throw it tothe open man.”

Zembiec’s most im-pressive game came dur-ing a 48-34 win for Aqui-nas in the state regionalor quarterfinal round, against Jamestown.

The Little Irish took alead early and stayed ontrack to keep scoring, asJamestown was led backinto the game by record-breaking quarterbackJake Sisson. Zembiecthrew four touchdownspasses, completing 20 of35 attempts for 313 yards.

“In the (2012) sectionalfinal, we were able to getpressure and sack him,”Pittsford coach Keith Mo-linich said. “He still wasable to deliver some goodthrows. He just standsback there, he doesn’t getrattled.”

Zembiec’s statistics in-clude a 58 percent com-pletion rate with 23touchdowns versus six in-terceptions. His 1,721yards on 203 attempts

have come in about 33quarters of action in 12games.

“We knew that wehad to keep the ball,”Molinich said. “The firstgame we did that, butthen all of a sudden theycould score 21 points inone quarter.

“That’s frustrating,to play solid football andthen have someone whocan take it one step high-er and close the game. Ithink Monroe-Woodbu-ry has to keep the ball inits hands. And they can’tgive Aquinas shortfields, because he gets itinto the end zone in ahurry.“

Zembiec’s jump intonational publicationsand conversations firstbegan to develop whenhe was 13 years old, as aseventh-grader at Cos-grove Middle School. He was runner-up inSports Illustrated’sSports Kid of the Yearcontest.

These contests usual-ly include a category forawareness or achieve-ment outside of sports, and it impressed thatothers joined Zembiecin wearing pink as atribute to his mother.Maureen Zembiec hashad two bouts withbreast cancer, and par-ticipates in walks thatraise awareness aboutthe disease with her son.

“She’s doing great,”Zembiec said. “(Thetribute) was awesome, itreally took off. It wassomething that startedkind of started from lit-tle ideas, thinking ‘Hey,that would be reallycool, I know that shewould love this and foot-ball is such a big part ofour life.’

“Every football play-er probably wears a lit-tle bit of pink, but tohave a special meaningbehind it gives motiva-tion, especially to my-self, even to the team. Itwas something differ-ent that most teamsdon’t do, where itbrought the families ofthe team, the players, and the coaches prettyclose.”

NEW YORK — SeniorsMickey Burke and JoshDyrland ran two of thegreatest record-break-ing races in the 50-yearhistory of Rochester-area cross country Sat-urday morning.

“Absolutely exhila-rating,” in Burke’swords after winning the35th Foot Locker highschool regionals on VanCortlandt Park’s historic5K course.

“Really exciting,”was Dyrland’s reactionto his best time in finish-ing third over the same3.1-mile distance at theninth Nike Cross NewYork regionals, 65 milesnorth of Van Cortlandt atBowdoin Park in Pough-keepsie.

Along with similarlyexceptional runs byRush-Henrietta juniorAlex Cooper (sixth atNike) and Penfield sen-ior Katie Lembo (ninthat Foot Locker), all fourqualified for nationalchampionships. Top fiveindividuals not on a teamqualify at Nike, top 10 atFoot Locker.

Irondequoit’s Dyr-land and Cooper headfor Nike in Portland,Ore., Saturday and R-H’sBurke and Lembo to SanDiego for Foot LockerDec. 14.

“A historic day,” saidR-H coach Mike DeMay,who accompanied hisgirls team to Pough-keepsie while R-H assis-tant coach Mike Burkedrove his older son Col-by, his wife, Bev, andMickey to Van Cort-landt.

» Burke’s 15-minute,19-second time was just10 seconds off Van Cort-landt’s all-time coursehigh school record heldby Olympian Donn Ca-bral, and seven secondsfaster than Section V’sprevious best, by Fair-port’s Pat Dupont thatsame year. No Section V

boy had ever won the re-gional race, and Van Cort-landt cross country datesback to 1913.

“Mickey’s so muchabout the history it’s un-canny,” Mike Burke said.“The course, the school, the section . . . he knew hecould do something spe-cial here, and has he ever. That’s why he chose toswitch races this year.”

A year ago Mickey wassecond at Nike regionalsand 13th at nationals.

“It sounds like it wentjust about as we hadplanned it,” said DeMay,briefed by Mike Burke onthe phone this way: Mick-ey stayed with the pack, broke away from two Con-necticut runners nearmile 2 then chased themdown with his closingspeed to win by three sec-onds.

“This race was a WAYbetter one than states,”said Mickey, who wasthird in a lunging photo-finish at Queensbury,Warren County, twoweeks ago and was sodown afterward that heindicated he might bagthe rest of the season. “Ifelt so strong today, like Iwas getting faster andfaster the closer I got tothe finish line.” “

» Dyrland’s finish atNike — three secondsahead of state Class Achampion Bryce Millar ofFayetteville-Manlius —was in 15:43, fastest everby a Rochester-area run-ner and 25th-fastest all-time at Bowdoin Park.

“That’s amazing,” Dyr-land said. “I really didn’tthink I’d be third. My goalwas top five. I actuallyhad the lead at one point, but then Mike (eventualwinner Mike Branniganof Northport) blew by meat mile two.”

Watts leads R-Hto tourney title

When the cannonboomed and its cloud ofsmoke wafted toward thestarting line, Alex Cooperwas so startled, she hesitat-ed.

But within a split sec-

ond, the junior from Rush-Henrietta had jumped outwith 198 others, cutthrough the billowyplume, then pounded thefrozen turf at the NikeCross Nationals for thenext 18 minutes.

When it was all over,

her 18:11 time placed her31st at the 10th annual eventheld near Nike headquar-ters in suburban Portland,Ore.

It has become a show-case for the best highschool cross countryteams, and many of the

best individuals, in thecountry.

Irondequoit’s JoshDyrland, the only Roches-ter-area boy to qualify,was 61st in the second race,in 15:55.

“The pace was just in-credibly fast, for sure,”

Cooper said. “I knew itwould be, but I didn’t ex-pect it to be that fast. Iwas trying to move up,but so was everybodyelse.”

Dyrland, like Cooper, got caught in a hot firstmile, well faster than

five-minute pace.“I tried, but I didn’t get

out fast enough in the be-ginning,” Dyrland said. “Isurged at about 500 me-ters and got near the leadpack, but after the rollersI couldn’t hold it and start-ed getting passed.”
