GREEN WITH ENVY OR JUST ALGAE?UNCONTROLLED ALGAE IN YOUR WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM CAN SICKEN YOUR PLANT IN MULTIPLE WAYS.

Wherever algae grows uncontrolled in your wastewater treatment system—in tanks, digestors, clarifiers, or lagoons—they are a serious liability. Excess algae growth can sicken your plant in a number of ways, causing: TSS problems, false BOD readings, lagoon effluent noncompliance, surface scum, poor water clarity, and noxious odors. Algae grows wherever you have a source of nitrogen, phosphate, excess sludge, and sunlight; the exact makeup of wastewater ponds and lagoons. We use SeClear, which is an US EPA registered algaecide, because it kills algae while lowering phosphate levels. We use SeClear with our PondZilla WW to improve performance*.

In a lagoon with excess sludge, use our VitaStim Polar in the winter, VitaStim Summer Slam in the summer, and VitaStim 6000—Lagoon Sludge in the spring and fall. These two products will lower ammonia and sludge levels. If you have algae that is unusually dense or unique in color or odor we may ask that you send us a sample so we can ID it and give you a prescription. Understanding what drives your specific algae is half the battle.

*In California, Washington and Oregon use PondZilla California

RECIPE FOR DISASTERBOD, COD, TSS, TPH & FOG REACHING SCARY LEV-ELS? NOTHING CAN MESS UP A WASTEWATER PLANT LIKE A LOT OF INCOMING GREASE.

That’s an icky alphabet soup of acronyms for any wastewater treatment system, but that’s what is cooked up when fats, oils, and greases aren’t managed at the source of the problem. If you’re stuck with a goulash of grease build-up, blockages,

nauseating odors, outbreaks of filamentous bacteria, inefficient clarification, and poor solid removal, not to mention looming surcharges and penalties, then you’ve come to the right place. Our bacterial cultures break up and digest the most stubborn grease, unlike chemicals that just move the problem around, causing further clogging in the system. So fast, so effective, grease doesn’t stand a chance.

We could write a book on the many possible causes of foam in activated sludge—young bacteria, old bacteria, and no bacteria all of which can be aggravated by problems like surfactants, greases, and fatty acids. These situations allow two hard-to-treat filaments to flourish in WWTPs. They are the main culprits behind excessive foaming: Nocardia and Microthrix Parvicella. Nocardia is sticky to the touch, can foam anywhere, and reach 3 to 20 feet high—Yes we said FEET. Nocardia is caused by grease in your system, but can be controlled with Foam Buster, Qwik-Zyme L, and changes in wasting rates.

Microthrix Parvicella is a dark brown, matted foam that can be 6 to 12 inches thick. It forms when water temperatures dip below 65°F, causing fat and grease to break down incompletely into fatty acids. The Microthrix feeds on these fatty acids, so that when the warm spring temperatures arrives, Microthrix Parvicella foaming has the means to grow and spread. Visit www.teamaquafix.com/solutions to learn more about each specific foam and the mechanism by which our products work.

THE ONE-TWO PUNCHKEEP YOUR NITRIFYING CULTURES ALIVETO RENDER AMMONIA OBSOLETE

Put the pedal to the metal by pairing our VitaStim Ammonia Assimilators with our most powerful VitaStim Nitrifiers yet. VitaStim Ammonia Assimilators' biostimulants trigger VitaStim Nitrifiers and other naturally occurring nitrifiers. The heterotrophic nitrifying cultures in VitaStim Ammonia Assimilator kick into overdrive in toxic environments to complete essential reactions in the nitrification cycle. Operators of wastewater plants—and lakes, lagoons, and ponds as well—that suffer from high

ammonia levels come to us for solutions. The Dynamic Duo is specifically adapted to work in a whole range of wastewater conditions, taking into account the chemistry you currently use, any physical limitations of the plant, and the present microorganism population. We use both the VitaStim Nitrifiers and VitaStim Ammonia Assimulators as a means of nitrifiying in potentially toxic or high BOD environments. To learn more about nitrification and potential sources of toxicity visit www.teamaquafix.com/solutions/ammonia.

The leading-edge duo of VitaStim Nitrifiers and VitaStim Ammonia Assimilators contains active bacteria including Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, Nitrospira, and heterotrophic nitrifiers at the highest concentration in the industry. The concentration of cultures in these two products is so high, in fact, that they need to be separated until use to protect the bacteria. This combination packs a powerful punch helpful to the growth and reproduction of nitrifying bacteria.

“It was the end of winter and our plant got hit by a high pH from a local industry and we lost nitrification. VitaStim Nitrifiers had us back in compliance in 3 days. I highly recommend it.”

—Jim, Langlade County

“We have an SBR system and occasionally we get a cleaner dumped into our plant and our effluent ammonia will go up to the teens. Their nitrifiers bring us back into compliance in about three days.”

No worries, AQUAFIX is here to help.

IN A LATHER OVER SURFACTANTS?WHEN PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO DISPOSE OF SOMETHING, THEY DUMP IT DOWN THE DRAIN.

The bad news: One of the most pressing issues facing wastewater plants today is the effect of surfactants, or surface activating agents (fancy names for soap), and how they affect the biological process. These high-molecular-weight soaps are used in industrial formulations as well as cleaners in schools and cafeterias, and by companies that have high standards for cleanliness. Every fall when kids go back to school, we get calls from small municipal plants that suddenly start bulking and foaming. Unfortunately, when water temperatures are cold, it is especially difficult to break down surfactants.

Surfactants are generally long, stable molecules that often foam up and can cause bulking and dispersion of the mixed liquor. Surfactants “make water wetter,” meaning they lower the surface tension of the water. This is how a soap cleans and also how it breaks up the floc and creates a high TSS effluent. Even worse news: When they do finally start to break down, surfactants can form intermediaries that affect nitrification and ammonia removal. The good news? Aquafix has a finely-tuned arsenal of bacteria and micronutrients that eat surfactants for breakfast, and we know how to use them.

MIDGE FLY MAYHEMDID YOU KNOW RED WORMS ARE LIVINGOFF YOUR BIOLOGY?

Midge flies hatch their larvae (called red worms or bloodworms) in wastewater; they fatten up by feeding off the wastewater’s nutrient-rich bacteria and sludge. As the bloodworm troops surge through the sludge, sucking up good bacteria, you might see your plant’s mixed liquor decrease even

though you’re not wasting. Bloodworms slither into the filters, storm the drainage system, and sometimes even set up camp on tank walls. In 10 days, the bloodworms mature into a swarm of midge flies, becoming an airborne nuisance.

IT PAYS FOR ITSELF!THE DAYS OF POOR SETTLING, CLOUDY DECANT, FOAMING, ODORS, AND EXCESS SLUDGE ARE NUMBERED.

They can run but they can’t hide. BugJuice is on the warpath, ready to stop these solids in their tracks. The days of poor settling, cloudy decant, foaming, odors, and excess sludge are numbered. BugJuice has saved numerous cities $10,000 to $50,000 in hauling and polymer costs. BugJuice degrades what the bacteria can't, such as: emulsions, waxes, fat & fatty acids and oils.

If your digestor will not settle use BugJuice with VitaStim Low F:M. The combination of both products will prevent filaments and promote settling. If your problem is due to incoming grease we recommend using Bug On A Rope or one of our other bacterial products in your lift stations to chew up the grease before it gets there (see pages 9-10).

BUGJUICE IS ON THE WARPATH,REDUCING ALL SLUDGE IN ITS PATH.

THE STORY BEHIND BUGJUICEYears ago we realized that the material that enters an aerobic digestor contains heaps of insoluble BOD. If we could convert it into soluble BOD, allowing the naturally occurring bacteria to digest it, then we could reduce sludge. We knew that adding more bacteria would be a waste of time since bacteria can’t break down high-end organics. So we began fermenting catalysts that would convert the BOD and allow the natural bacteria to finish the job.Watch our Aerobic Digestor Treatment video at:

DON’T OVERLOOK IT, MANAGE IT!LOW F:M PROBLEMS ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED OR THOUGHT OF AS PROBLEMS WITH FEW SOLUTIONS. THAT’S WHY WE CREATED VITASTIM LOW F:M.

VitaStim Low F:M helps offset poor settling in plants, as well as the cloudy effluent that is extremely common in those plants. VitaStim Low F:M can offset the toxicity that comes from schools or industries that have to use biocides in their cleaning process. Biocides like quaternary amine, peroxyacetic acid, and triclosan (found in hand sanitizer) will put your bacteria on the defensive right away. This product is helpful in plants that do not have low F:M but behave like they do. In extreme cases this product is used with our Filament Buster or our Foam Buster.

VitaStim Low F:M will deliver the essential micronutrients needed to rebuild the biological community that is necessary to provide excellent nutrient uptake and better settling. VitaStim Low F:M also contains bacteria that flocculate well in low food conditions making your plant easier to manage. Not to mention the fact that VitaStim Low F:M will also limit the following bulking filaments: Type 0041, Type 0675, Type 0914 and Type 1851.

FASTER BREAK DOWNFASTER RELEASE OF PHOSPHOROUSLESS SLUDGE PRODUCTION

GOT CASEIN?THE FASTER YOU BREAK DOWN THE CASEIN, THE FASTER YOU’LL RELEASE PHOSPHOROUS, AND THE LESS SLUDGE YOU’LL PRODUCE.

Casein is the cause of most dairy WWTP problems. This large, complex protein can’t be broken down by bacteria, like the dairy waste sugars can be. To knock out casein as well as the fat and fatty acids in dairy waste, you need something that packs more punch. Left untreated, casein will cause foaming,

poor settling, pesky odors and excess phosphorus in an undersized WWTP. The faster you break down the casein, the faster you’ll release phosphorous, and the less sludge you’ll produce. Watch as your polymer needs are dramatically reduced!

HOW THE SLUDGE STOLE CHRISTMAS!THE COLD HAS A WAY OF BRINGING OUT EVERY WWTP OPERATOR’S INNER GRINCH.

When water temperatures dip below 60° F, warm-loving bacteria settle down for a long winter’s nap. Unlike some of us in wintertime, these bacteria couldn’t be any less interested in eating. Reproduction slows down too. The results are ugly—a plant so clogged up you wouldn't want to touch it with a thirty nine and a half foot pole! Even the most skilled and experienced operators can't control the havoc brought on by weather. Excessive cold temperatures cause dying bacteria, disintegrating floc, and tangly filament growth in plants where waste and ammonia go unchecked. In lift stations, grease hardens and clumps. Ponds often become choked in phosphate, nitrogen, and other nutrients.

Trying to keep up with fickle winter temps to stay within limits can leave you treading on thin ice! These 3 chill-activated formulas go straight to work in the iciest of waters, devouring sludge, grease, and organic matter.

ARE YOUR NEIGHBORS COMPLAINING?HYDROGEN SULFIDE LURKING IN YOUR WASTE WATER COLLECTION SYSTEM, DRAIN LINES, OR TANKS?

Generated when sewage becomes stagnant or septic, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is infamous for a noxious “rotten egg” odor. Watch out—if the DNR or EPA get a whiff of hydrogen sulfide wafting from your wastewater, they might go from breathing deep to breathing down your neck! H₂S is also treacherously toxic; even low levels (under 50 ppm) can cause coughing, headache, and eye irritation. Levels above 300 ppm can completely destroy your sense of smell, which can cause you to inhale

dangerous doses. Levels above 600 ppm can paralyze the lungs and can even be fatal. When H₂S oxidizes, it spawns sulfuric acid faster than you can ask, “What type of acid corrodes cement, copper, and steel?” Sulfuric acid attacks just about any type of pipe and leaves you fuming over costly repairs.

ACID OVERDOSE?IS YOUR ANAEROBIC DIGESTER BEHAVING LIKE A 1960S ROCKER WITH AN ACID PROBLEM?

This is a serious issue that arises when quick-reacting acid-forming bacteria go to town digesting solids while methane-forming bacteria struggle to catch up and complete methanogenesis (the conversion of fatty acids into methane gas). To help anaerobic digesters get clean, we developed Anaerobic Trace Elements. This liquid

intervention is a powerful mixture of micronutrients and six trace metals—iron, zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt, and molybdenum—vital for the health and growth of methane formers. Without these trace elements, methane-forming bacteria become sick and, sadly, can no longer function. If you know of an anaerobic digester struggling to produce methane gas, there is help. There is Anaerobic Trace Elements. For customized anaerobic digester treatment programs, call our hotline: 888-757-9577.

ANAEROBIC TRACE ELEMENTSMethanogenic, or methane-producing, bacteria require six essential trace metals for the anaerobic conversion of low molecular weight fatty acids to methane gas. It is important that the methane producers have the trace metals they need to become established and not be overpowered by acid formers. Anaerobic Trace Elements contains a balance of zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, and iron in addition to a vitamin supplement that the methanogenic bacteria need.

If filaments aren’t the cause of your bulking then there is a good chance it is because of the bacterium Zoogloea Ramigera. Zoogloea Ramigera has cells that are rod shaped, stain Gram negative, and resemble fingers or branches of a tree. Under normal conditions Zoogloea Ramigera is a major contributor to floc formation in activated sludge. When there is an excess or overabundance of this bacterium it starts to cause problems and results in Zoogloeal bulking. Zoogloeal bulking is also known as viscous or slime bulking and can cause the activated sludge to have

ZOOGLOEAL "SLIME" BULKING

a slimy or jelly-like consistency and texture. There are several reasons for this: 1) a high F:M ratio with an excessive amount of soluble organic compounds that are easy to degrade. 2) a nutrient deficiency, such as nitrogen or phosphorus or 3) a low pH. Remedies depend on the causes and can include adjusting the pH, adding missing macronutrients, wasting slowly, and adding in good mixed liquor from another plant. Using VitaStim 2200—Grease or VitaStim 5000—Municipal Sludge Reducer have also been shown to improve settling.

COMMONLY OCCURRING FILAMENT TYPES

Filaments can cause all sorts of headaches for wastewater operators. Foaming and bulking caused by filaments can result in operational issues and poor settling, which can lead to an increase in polymer

use and even result in violations of effluent limits. Understanding the commonly occurring filaments can help you control and prevent bulking and foaming.

NOCARDIANocardia is a short, stubborn, three-dimensional filament that foams and digests BOD, FOG, surfactants, and anything else in its path. Nocardia produces softball-sized bubbles that float on the surface and are sticky to the touch. We have recorded Nocardia foam reaching up to 20 feet in height.

MICROTHRIX PARVICELLAIf your foaming isn’t caused by Nocardia, then Microthrix Parvicella is most likely the culprit. It can be found within the floc or free in the bulk solution. Microthrix Parvicella, like Nocardia, stains Gram-positive and has no sheath or attached growth. It can be easily distinguished from Nocardia because

It stains Gram positive and exhibits true branching, which makes it look like branches on an oak tree. The good news is that with aggressive wasting and our Qwik-Zyme L with Foam Buster it is regularly beaten. The Nocardia cycle is detailed on our website.

COMMON FOAMING FILAMENTS

it shows no branching or bends, twists, and coils; creating a unique shape that resembles spaghetti. Microthrix foam is usually 6 inches deep and looks like a heavy mat. Our Qwik-Zyme L along with Foam Buster or VitaStim Low F:M are effective solutions. The Microthrix cycle is also on our website.

the floc, there are heavy amounts of attached growth but it can be without growth as it extends into the bulk liquid. Most times a low F:M ratio is the cause. Type 0675 can be treated with VitaStim Low F:M.

Type 0041 stains Gram-positive or Gram-variable and can be straight or slightly bent with cells that are square. It is mostly seen within the floc particles. Type 0041 is common in environments with a low F:M and can be treated with VitaStim Low F:M.

TYPE 0675Type 0675 shares a lot of the same characteristics as type 0041 and many times may be indistinguishable from type 0041. Like 0041 it stains Gram-positive or Gram-variable and is straight or smoothly curved with square cells in a sheath. When observed inside

TYPE 0041Type 0041 is different than the previous filaments because it has a sheath and can have large amounts of attached growth that can make viewing the actual filament difficult. Type 0041 is frequently confused with type 0675 because of the similarities.

into the bulk liquid, looking like clumps of spaghetti. The exact cause is unknown but is believed to be low F:M or a nutrient deficiency, such as nitrogen or phosphorus. Checking and adjusting nitrogen and phosphorus levels combined with VitaStim Low F:M has been successful in battling type 1851.

TYPE 021NType 021N can be tricky to identify because it can vary in cell shape, length and width depending on the environment. Typically it has no sheath or attached growth. It stains Gram-negative and can be straight, smoothly curved, or coiled. The cells can be oval, rectangular, or shaped like a hockey puck with

TYPE 1851Type 1851 can cause a lot of problems for operators due to the lack of information available in wastewater research.
