LAKES A body of relatively still fresh or salt water

of considerable size, localized in a basin,

which is surrounded by land.

Generally found in mountainous areas, rift

zones and areas with ongoing glaciations.

Also found in endorheic basins or along the

courses of mature rivers.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

STRATIFICATION - formationof layers

As summer progresses, mostlakes form three layersnamely :

EPILIMNION(upper layer)- characterized by

warmer(less dense) water.

METALIMNION orTHERMOCLINE

- is a narrow band- colderthan the upper and warmerthan the lower water.

HYPOLIMNION(bottom layer)- has much colder water

among the three

WHAT HAPPENS.. . .• During SUMMER, the water in lakes in climate tend

to stratify or form layers.

During WINTER, many lakes are stratified becauseice covers the lake surface.

• During SPRING, ice melts, the surface waters warm;

sink; and mix with the deeper water.

• During the FALL TURNOVER, surface waters cool

until they are as dense as the bottom and wind

action mixes the lake.

CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICSNutrients

• Phosphorus

- controls the extent of algae growth, if morephosphorus is added in a lake, more algae will

grow.

Nitrogen

- second to phosphorus as an importantnutrient for plant and algae growth.

UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS Lakes are not subjected to tides.

Lakes are characterized by still waters,

unlike seas, oceans and rivers which arecharacterized by moving waters.

FOOD CHAIN

Phytoplankton(predominantlyalgae)

- primary producers in theaquatic environment

- requires sunlight, water, andnutrients for photosynthesis

Zooplankton(shrimp-like

Daphnia and Bosmina)- considered herbivorous because

they consume plants

Planktivores(fish such asminnows, small sunfish and

gizzard shad)- organisms that eat Zooplankton

Piscivores(fish-eating fish,

such as bass, pike, and walleye)

- at the top of the aquatic food

chain
