3.2.3 Section c The challenge of resource management 1 Define ‘agribusiness’

Application of business skills to agriculture: Typically large agricultural corporations that produce, sell, and distribute farm/food resources, gaining a large influence over supplies and prices. Former agricultural collectives become agribusiness corporations.

5 Define ‘dam’ and ‘reservoir’.

Dam: A barrier (made of earth, concrete or stone) built across a valley to interrupt river flow.Reservoir: An artificial lake, usually created by a dam, which stores water and controls the discharge of the river.

9 Suggest a disadvantage of dams such as the Katse Dam for food security.

Population may over-rely on water from the dam and/or use water wastefully so that if the dam should fail or run dry, they will be less well-equipped to cope (resilience will be lower).

13 Outline how a country such as Lesotho could use the Katse Dam to improve the economic and social well-being of its population.

Economic: Cheaper, more reliable and plentiful food, water and energy increases prosperity of population. Can sell surplus to neighbouring countries.Social: Funds to improve education, health and social care.

2 State an example of the way each of the three most important resources is used in agriculture.

Food: Animal feed (e.g. fodder crops grown especially to feed animals in the human food chain).Water: Irrigation of crops; drink for animals.Energy: Fuel for farm machinery, transportation and processing; electricity to pump water.

6 Describe and explain how dams such as the Katse Dam can help to manage water insecurity.

Water is harnessed and collected from the river in the reservoir when the supply is good (e.g. rainy season), so that there is a steady supply throughout the year (e.g. in dry season). Irrigation resource for agriculture. Clean water for people.

10 Describe and explain how dams such as the Katse Dam can help to manage energy insecurity.

Dam can provide hydro-electric power (HEP) which is a renewable energy source with a low carbon-footprint.

14 Explain how inequalities in the consumption of resources can influence well-being.

Higher consumption in HICs/NEEs lower in LICs. Wealth places the HICs/NEEs in a stronger position to obtain goods and services (e.g. food, water, energy) that promote well-being and maintain or grow their economies.

3 Describe the location of the Katse Dam, using the map.

North central Lesotho. Lesotho is a land-locked country surrounded entirely by South Africa in the southern part of Africa.

7 Suggest a disadvantage of dams such as the Katse Dam for water security.

Water supply down stream will be affected, potentially reducing supply to local people and damaging wetland ecosystems; large reservoirs may cause local/ regional climate change by altering the water cycle in the area.

11 Suggest a disadvantage of dams such as the Katse Dam for energy security

Doesn’t (yet) provide fuel necessary for most transport, so still depend on carbon-based energy. Electricity generated may not be evenly distributed; may be mainly used by TNCs or rich elites so that ordinary people do not benefit as much as hoped.

4 Describe the relief of the landscape at the location of the Katse Dam, using the aerial photograph.

The dam has been built across a river valley. The area is hilly/mountainous. Much of the land has steep slopes (high gradient).

8 Describe and explain how dams such as the Katse Dam can help to manage food insecurity.

Dam provides a reliable water supply via irrigation to local farmers, enabling them to grow more food of better quality and greater variety.

12 State measures which could indicate that enhanced security of food, water and/or energy supply are improving the development of a country.

Improvements in economic and social measures such as: GNI pc; access to electricity; life expectancy (increase) Access to clean water; Infant Mortality Rate; malnutrition; undernutrition (decrease).
