Dear Colleagues: Welcome to the silly season. At my previous institution (which some of you may want to read: where I was previously institutionalized) we had a faculty email list-serve, and all members had the ability to send email to faculty@… It kind of sounds good, in theory, but when you stop to consider the ways in which this could go wrong at the end of the semester you might find yourself glad for yet another uncategorized, vague subject line email from Brian Johnson. And in all seriousness, my message for this month’s newsletter is relatively short and straightforward: Let’s help one another avoid that blaze, the burning out, the melting down. Instead, let’s stop and take a moment to cool down, to take a deep breath … to smell the flowers. Many of us are neck-deep in grading and the stress of the end of the semester. So too are our students, and the mutual stresses are potentially combustible. While my temper definitely flared when a “we just wish we had known about this …” chorus started in one of my classes in reference to an assignment that has been ON THE SYLLABUS SINCE THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS WHICH IS ALSO WHEN IT WAS POSTED ON D2L AND WE TALKED ABOUT THIS ON THESE THREE SPECIFIC DATES — a deep breath and a few questions helped both the students and me to really identify what their questions were about (the required appendices), and allowed for all of us to lower the temperature (and the volume!) in the room. We’re no different, my dear colleagues, from our students. We get stressed and we respond poorly and we manage ourselves in ways that we don't want to talk about when we go home for the holidays. So, in the spirit of making it through without a blaze (those are really never experienced as glory), I'd ask that you consider the ways in which you can make sure the ending is good. It's been a tough semester, after all, but how we bring it to a close will be what we remember, what makes the difference, and whether or not what we've done really counts. It probably doesn't come as a surprise that I was a smart assed kid, and maybe it's not quite honest of me to bracket that in an age range. My mother frequently told me that it wasn't what I said, it was how I said it. I hated that phrase when I was getting in trouble, but may need to acknowledge that it probably influenced my eventual choice of discipline! We've had some serious debates about advising, about the DBA and general education, free speech and hate speech on campus, hiring processes, institutional policies, and more, and I am, frankly, delighted to have these difficult conversations (another key area of my discipline). Too often we have confused civility with consensus. While we need to genuinely listen in order to truly understand the perspectives of others, and the validity of multiple views, we do not always need to adopt a perspective in order to endorse it as legitimate for another to hold. As long we all have been heard and have extended understanding to one another, we can disagree with a decision without burning the whole thing down. Open, transparent decision making requires debate and dissent. This conflict can be collegial and healthy, as long as we attend to how we say

it. Harder, but all the more important as the stress mounts and things heat up. As the kitschy mug proclaims, sometimes when I open my mouth my mother comes out. It's a good thing that moms are always right. We also owe it to ourselves to take the time to simmer down, to extinguish the frantic anxieties that the end of the semester invariably brings. No matter how well we plan, no matter how strategically we build assignments, there's no avoiding the inevitable workload as the heat gets turned up. To that end, I need to invoke Alison Dagnes, who frequently notes that we do truly have the best job in the world. There's nothing that compares to guiding a student to the lightbulb moment, seeing that spark come alive, directly transforming lives. Plus, we have the autonomy and self-determination of a business owner without having to do the paperwork and taxes! And while it may come across as more sentimental than you'd expect from a self-confessed smart ass, there's no better way to take the heat off, to lower the end of semester temperature, than to attend commencement. While it isn't a contractual obligation, I truly cannot envision the academic enterprise without it and I am at a loss to understand why so few of us - only about 30 faculty members, or 10% have signed up so far to - participate. This is truly the fruit of our labor, the moment where our work receives recognition, where the accomplishments of our students through our labor is realized. We should all be there to witness, to receive the due credit, and to be rejuvenated. Those two hours on Saturday morning do wonders for our sense of purpose and allows us to keep the flames burning - at a safe, sustainable level. And now, before I veer off in to my appliance unplugging fire phobia, please accept my best wishes for an easy end of the semester, one marked by a season of shared purpose and respectful agreement and disagreement, free of all forms of melt downs. Ugly sweaters at your discretion. And, animals smelling flowers. See you at commencement, In solidarity, Kara

Social Justice- No report CAP No report Enrollment Mgmt.- 10/30 Strategic Enrollment Management Meeting Notes/Report for EC:

Fall 2017 Freeze Data: questions about out-of-state recruitment numbers have been flat. Suggestion to move more in New Jersey. There are approximately 375 fewer full time undergraduates than Fall 2016 freeze. Requests were made for Mark Pilgrim to extract the average number of credits that full time UG are taking this year as compared to previous years.

Spring/Fall 2018 Enrollment: Concerted effort to “buy more names” from College Board, enhanced GEO fencing.

Admissions Publications: admitted students will be receiving a re-designed admit packet and confirmation “package” (I’ll try to get ones for the next EC)

Open Houses: outreach is occurring to students that both attended and do not attend (after RSVP’ing) Open Houses. Exploratory sessions appear popular. Departments can request list of registered students that did or did not attend if they would like to coordinate outreach from a faculty member with the Admissions Office. Students can apply at open houses with a waived application fee (300 applied the weekend of October open house). October’s open house schedule was adjusted based on feedback from September. JH is interested in further feedback.

Admitted Student Days: March 2nd and April 6th. More details to come regarding schedule and programming

Place for You Program: November 17th. Targets students from under-represented groups. Diversity Recruitment initiative/program. SU/Admission funds two buses from Philadelphia area. Suggestions to reach out and invite to STEM disciplines, in addition to the usual offices represented. Current SU student-leader-liaisons participate as well.

National Clearing House Data: JH discussed data report indicated “where students go that were admitted to SU but chose elsewhere”. PSU is the #1, WCU #2, and several PASSHE were in the top 10. 3 CC in the top 10 as well.

Diversity Recruitment Plan: JH presented the current draft of the admission’s diversity recruitment plan. No questions from the committee.

New Idea: Admissions Faculty Liaisons. Idea stemmed from a conversation between JH, K.Shirk, and C. Bennett during a SEMC co-chair preparation meeting from the 10/30 meeting. In light of the demands on department chairs, yet the increasing desire to involve faculty in student recruitment, the idea of “Admissions Faculty Liaisons” positions were discussed. Departments would identify a faculty member interested and enjoys working with prospective students and families as well as being a pipeline of information from the admissions office to their department. Pre-term, on-going, and post-term professional development would occur. Questions and concerns regarding “adding more administrative tasks to faculty” and the need to recognize/incentive this work were discussed.

Mobilization State Mobilization: State APSCUF Staff Member, Josh Grubbs, and Seth Kahn, West Chester, newly elected State Mobilization Committee Chair, held a state committee conference call on November 3; STRIKE MANUAL: State Mobilization Committee is requesting that all local chapters’ Executive Committee review the Strike Manual, and give feedback/suggestions for improvement. All suggested changes should be compiled by the Local Chair (@ SU Cheryl Slattery), and will be presented during a state mobilization committee meeting being scheduled for mid-January in Harrisburg. DACA: State Mobilization Committee Chair, Seth Kahn (West Chester) had asked each local chapter to develop a list of resources that students with DACA status can get help locally if they need it while the legal status of the DACA program is up in the air. We were not to include private (for-profit) law firms, just local non-profit groups or organizations that offer counseling or other kinds of resources. Our compiled list of resources was posted on the Google Docs link at State APSCUF on October 20, 2017. (See Local Mobilization: DACA: below for the next steps) BRIEF NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE: The faculty delegates of the Legislative Assembly took action on the tentative agreement during a Special Legislative Assembly conference call held, November 2, 2017. The delegates approved that an authorization vote by the faculty membership be taken. State Mobilization Committee Chair asked that each local chapter begin preparations for the ratification vote. (See Local Mobilization: BRIEF NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE: below for local details) Next Conference Call: Friday, December 1, 2017. Local Mobilization: STRIKE MANUAL: APSCUF/SU committee must review the Strike Manual, keeping in mind the October 2016 strike, likewise, looking at carryover in preparation as well as needed improvement. All comments and suggested should be sent to Cheryl Slattery at [email protected], by January 12, 2018. Cheryl will present this information during the state mobilization committee meeting being scheduled for mid-January in Harrisburg. DACA: At Shippensburg University we have one student on campus with DACA status. It was requested that the list of resources be posted to our local APSCUF/SU website as well as in the Office of Social Equity. Coach Bertie Landes Scholarship Help support this scholarship in honor of the great SU Field Hockey Coach Bertie Landes

The Coach Bertie Landes Scholarship was created to honor the legacy of Coach Landes and celebrate the love, passion, and pursuit of excellence on the field that she embodied. During her 18 years as the Head Field Hockey coach at Ship she encouraged her athletes to reach for their full potential. Under Coach Landes' leadership her teams posted a 302-77-1 record, her teams reached the PSAC Semifinals 16 times, and claimed 2 NCAA Division II national titles. While numbers speak for themselves, her leadership and mentorship is what will be remembered most. The impact she had on each of her athletes, over the years, goes far beyond the playing field. Her leadership can still be felt on the field today and we are ensuring that it stays there in perpetuity through this scholarship.

How Can You Help? This scholarship will be awarded to the field hockey student athlete that embodies the passion, love, and the winning attitude that Coach Landes instilled on the Shippensburg University Field Hockey program. By making a gift to support this scholarship you be helping provide an outstanding education to a dedicated student athlete who has aspirations to win both in the classroom and on the field. Any amount you can give will get us one step closer to be able to award this scholarship. Our goal is to raise a total of $25,000 in honor of Coach Landes. If you cannot provide monetary support at this time, please help us spread the word and share this link https://tinyurl.com/CoachLandes on any of your social media pages.

More Giving Opportunities

SU Jamaica Service Learning Project

Global Service Learning Project

Approximately twenty students from the PreK-4 and the PreK-4 special education dual majors at Shippensburg University are interested in traveling to the sugar producing area of Petersfield, Jamaica in March 2018. These students will be engaged with local teachers and students to help them develop lesson plans and best practices in teaching with limited resources. They will have a chance to meet with local community and professional leaders, serve 40+ hours of community service projects, explore the country and culture through educational field trips, and attend community events. Each student on this trip will be able to gain an appreciation in varied teaching strategies and be exposed to diverse cultural views while remaining sensitive and aware of local resources. These high-impact learning experiences will provide vital experience necessary for the students to succeed in their own classrooms after graduation. How Can You Help?

With your help we will fund the travel related expenses for these students to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This trip will broaden their knowledge, enhance friendships, provide international networking opportunities, and allow them to become immersed in a culture that is different than their own. It will cost about $2,000 per student in travel related expenses for them to have this incredible experience. Any amount you can give will help off-set these expenses and allow our students to participate in this opportunity. Consider sponsoring a specified portion of the student's trip at one of the following levels: $560 – Flight $385 – Lodging $168 – Transportation $30 – Health Insurance If you cannot provide monetary support at this time, please help us spread the word and share this link https://tinyurl.com/SUJamaicaTrip

on any of your social media pages.

SU LGBTQ+ Resource Center

Help Trent as he paves the way to launch the Shippensburg University Pride Center Trent Bauer who you might know from his recent appearance on the Ellen Show (https://tinyurl.com/TrentOnEllen) is currently in the process of launching the Shippensburg University Pride Center. He is a Business and Entrepreneurship dual major and is excited to graduate from Ship this May. This project is very near and dear to his heart and he is doing everything he can to get it off the ground prior to his graduation this spring. The mission of the Shippensburg University Pride Center is to provide a welcoming, approachable, and consistently staffed safe space for the SU LGBTQ+ community that focuses on providing resources and student support services for the University lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and ally community. The Center's efforts include providing campus programming around LGBTQ+ issues; LGBTQ+ student community building and networking opportunities; information and referral services; and maintaining a specialized literary and periodical library. The Center also organizes and facilitates diversity trainings for the campus community on the topic of LGBTQ+ inclusion, resources, and services unique to this community.
