is out there: theme & messagesadventureEducation has become

an increasingly important

investment that helps set the

stage for future success in

our modern world. While the

path of learning may seem

daunting and arduous, it is

more than just a collection of

sleepless nights fraught with

stress and anxiety that await

the adventurous mind. It is

a privilege where, for many,

gaining access to it is but a

distant dream comparable

to the legends and epics. In

this conference, we want

to look upon the matter of

higher education, address

the impediments and bust

the myths that surrounds

it to encourage students to

see higher education as an

alluring option.

It is our pleasure to welcome you

to APSA 21st Annual High School

Conference! The theme for this year is

“Adventure is Out There”. We hope you take our challenge to

break out of your comfort zone and explore the unfamiliar

and unknown places in your life in order to pursue

your future goals. We hope that you will be

able to enjoy and learn something new about

yourself and others through this conference. So what

are you waiting for? Come have an adventure with us!

welcome to hsc,

Page 5: APSA HSC 2014: Adventure is Out There

from the presidentThis year’s high school conference is definitely

something we’ve been looking forward to since

the summer. I’m really excited to be able to

see the fruits of our labor as the high school

conference planning committee fruition. Every

year we hold this conference, staying true to the

importance of access work in understanding the

institutional barriers that have prevented students

of color from attending higher education.

Through this work, we continue to challenge the

“model minority myth” that Asian Americans

are high achieving in higher education by their

over-representation, and do not need resources

when we know that this stereotype masks the

realities of Asian & Pacific-Islander American

experiences. We refuse to be silenced, and we

will continue

to empower our

communities to imagine

otherwise that adventure is out there.

My message to the high school students is that

on behalf of APSA is that we are all here for you

as resources/mentors/femtors even if we only are

able to share this one day together. Your stories

are real, valid, and powerful, and I hope you share

your stories with us here today as well as with

each other beyond this conference. I hope you all

find passion and excitement in this space, through

the stories and energy and support of each other.

I can’t wait to meet you all again later in your

journey, wherever your adventure takes you.

- Katie Huang

This is APSA’s 21st Annual High School

Conference and we could not be more

honored and proud to be part of this amazing

experience. This would not have been possible

without the constant support from the

wonderful committee, volunteers, alumni, and

advisors who take the time out of their day

to make this HSC successful. Your passion,

dedication, and perseverance have definitely

played a huge role in this production and to

that, we are eternally grateful. So thank you for

all that you have done and will do to make a

difference and a lasting impact.

And to all the high school students who were

able attend this conference, here is a big

THANK YOU for joining us today. We are

extremely fortunate to have a chance to meet

you all and hopefully inspire you to achieve your

hopes and dreams towards your future. We hope

that after today, you will gain new experiences

as you participate and engage with your peers

and us in the community. You can always count

on us as a resource to empower you as you

continue to seek adventures boldly and discover

your passion beyond your imagination!
