• Identify coaching skills necessary for effective precepting of nurse practitioner (NP) students in pediatrics
• Develop communication and educational skills to facilitate education of NP students in the pediatric clinical setting

NP student = the individual who is receiving direction and guidance from the preceptor (aka the APRN)
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) = the experienced clinician (aka the preceptor) who is providinginstruction to the NP student

Background• NPs by the numbers (AANP, 2017)
– There are more than 234,000 nurse practitioners in the United States – By 2024, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the NP profession
will have grown by 35%
• NP education (AANP, 2017)
– Approx. 20,000 students graduated from NP programs from 2014-15 – There are NP programs at approximately 350 universities and colleges in
the U.S. • Many programs offer distance learning, requiring the students to find
their own preceptors and clinical sites

What are the clinical hour requirements?
• The typical requirement for certifying bodies is a minimum of 500 hours of supervised clinical practice in the pediatrics specialty with an experienced APRN or physician in the same specialty
• Individual APRN program requirements vary– Dependent on program and student level (BSN-DNP vs.
MSN-DNP)

– “An NP student is working with me today. Together, we are going to begin the history, but I am going to have her/him take the lead. I am available to her/him and to you at all times.”

What if my patients refuse to see students?
• Tell child/family they were chosen specifically to give the NP student an opportunity to learn and you will be there every step of the way
• NP student is providing a “fresh set of eyes” • NP students are excellent source of the
“latest and greatest” information• Remind child/family the NP student is an
experienced RN who has worked with children extensively• If still refuse, reassure the NP student that it is not personal

• More than one approach can work• May depend on:
– Student’s clinical capabilities and readiness• Nudge them out of their comfort zone when safe
– Amount of time spent with current preceptor– The amount of patients and their ongoing needs through
the shift– Barriers within your clinical setting

• Remove 1 appointment in the morning and 1-2 appointments in the afternoon
• This may reduce productivity so consult with your office in advance
- Ideally, managers will adjust productivity equation for preceptors
