April, May and summer 2012 President’s Message February and March have been two months of activities that have led the FMBAA to success. We received the Arts and Culture Award from the Town of Ft. Myers Beach. What a pleasure it was to achieve this recognition! The FMBAA has for 60 years been the premier arts organization. The February Pot Luck with Kathleen Flicek’s good cooking was attended by 68 members and spouses. It was a fun evening for all! The Art Sale at TriPower Reality was also a successful event. Paintings were purchased and more people came to see and admire the work of artists who had quickly signed up to take advantage of this venue on Estero Boulevard. The many workshops taught by both famous artists and FMBAA members were very well attended. Students praised the instructors for teaching them new techniques and offering their critiques of their work. On March 4th the Art Bazaar was held at Santini Marina Plaza with 14 artists participating in spite of the huge storm that hit the island about 7:30 am as they were setting up their spaces. As the weather cleared people began to arrive and buy. The scholarship fund netted $1073 on sales of $4376. Thanks to everyone who helped this fledgling chairperson with this event. President’s Message

February and March have been two months of activities that have led the FMBAA to success.

Meet the Artist: Mary Klunk

Mary Klunk is a new member of the FMBAA

and this April will oversee the FMBAA Student

Scholarship Show. Mary and her husband William

came to Florida from Havre-de-Grace, MD.

Since moving to Florida Mary says “My goal

now is to enjoy art and to paint.” Mary’s medium

is primarily oil and some pastel. Mary’s approach

to painting is first think of the colors she will use.

Mary enjoyed doing color studies while in art

school and was motivated by the use of color in

Hans Hoffman’s work. Now Mary does still life

work as she can set the still life up in her studio,

carefully select the lighting, and go back to the

painting over time. She likes using Maroger

medium which is fast drying and lends itself to

glazing. Mary said that her main obstacle is finding

the time to work.

Mary majored in art and minored in

psychology at Towson University in Maryland.

Mary says she was influenced by the work of Will

Wilson who was at the Schuler School of Art in

Baltimore. Mary said that when she was a student

abstract painting was all the rage but her

preference was for realism. Mary studied with Polly

Mitchell at the Mitchell School of Fine Art. She

worked in art therapy for 10 years, in hospitals,

nursing homes, prisons, and for the veteran’s

administration. One interesting part of her art

career was working as a caricature artist in

Baltimore. Later she worked in the Baltimore

schools as a special education and reading teacher.

Next summer Mary and her husband

William will travel to Yellow Stone and Yosemite

National

Note: According to Dick Blick, Inc. “Modern

Maroger Medium (an emulsion of linseed oil,

mastic resin, gum Arabic and black oil) improves

paint handling while making colors richer, deeper

and lustrous even when dry. It makes oil colors

non-migratory, making it easier to paint details that

will remain separate.”

Annual Art Bazaar a Success The Art Bazaar was held again this year at Santini

Marina Plaza. A downpour in the early morning

threatened the event but the covered walkways

gave the artists relief, the sun returned and traffic

was good throughout the day. We raised $1073

towards the Student Scholarships that are given to

local students going on to study art at a college

level. The Dale Laitinen painting was raffled off as a

benefit as well.

….and the Raffle winner is…

Carol Frye Workshop - a Full House Carol Frye’s “Precious Stones” workshop held at

FMBAA in February was relaxed which set the pace

and put students at ease. The precious stones

were in the Daniel Smith paint used in the

workshop. She also combined ink with watercolor.

The students worked small and completed one or

more paintings each day. About half of the

students were FMBAA members and a good time

was had by all.

Paint the Beach...Sandcastles to Shrimpboats A plein air painting festival in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. November 5-11, 2012.

Plans are being made for the third annual plein air painting competition sponsored by Fort Myers Beach Art Association and Fish-Tale Marina and Santini Marina Plaza. Mimi Little and Corky Condon are working hard contacting sponsors for this annual event which costs over $20,000. to produce. Meg Bushnell is writing a grant request which includes funds to market the art association as well as Paint the Beach. Michele Buelow is contacting national sponsors to request donations from them and securing a judge. And Georgia is getting

together the entertainment, food and venue for the whole event. What will you do to help?

Some members have already stepped up to help...Katherine Miller will chair the Receiving, Pauline Healey will help with data input, Mary Chiakowsky will chair volunteers, Sylvia Kasparie will chair the hanging committee, George Buelow will manage the books. But we need more chairmen to make this event run smoothly...Can you take on Event publicity? Painting Raffle? Artists Check in?? Program? There are guidelines and precedents for all the jobs as well as lots of advice. With your help we can make this even better than before!!

These events are still in the planning stages and

may change slightly but give you an idea of the time

frames. Please sign up to help and take a

chairmanship if you can. We are a national event

now and getting bigger...be a part of it all!!!!

Mini Masters……..start painting

While you are enjoying the summer months, take your paints with you to the beach and create a couple of new mini paintings for FMBAA. Remember the image showing in the mat is only 3x5 in. Be sure to sign your name in that area so when matted it shows. We will again mat them to 8x10" for sale. Donation of mat board and bags is greatly appreciated. And if you put it all together you deserve a gold star!! This project has turned out to be a great fund raiser for the group so help us build up our supply with new paintings.
