Attendance Waivers Second Semester Attendance Wavier forms will be available beginning April 19 in the attendance center. Atten-
dance forms will be due no later than Monday, May 10 at 4:00 p.m.
The waiver provision was written into the policy for the sake of students who had something beyond their control
happen to prevent them from being in attendance (e.g. a severe illness or death in the family). Vacations and ap-
pointments are scheduled activities and are within the control of the family. Absences on days such as “senior skip
day” or the Royals home opener will not be waived. There are no circumstances under which an UNEXCUSED
absence will be waived.
All requests for an attendance waiver MUST be in writing. We request that parents and students plan ahead and
begin collecting documentation and turn in waiver paperwork to the SME Office as soon as possible. All Waiver
applications are due in the SME Office by Monday, May 10 at 4:00 p.m.
Submit your attendance waiver and any additional documentation to the SME Office. All materials must be re-
ceived in the SME office by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 10. If materials are received after this date, the grade card
will reflect an “N” for No Credit.

Library News “Get a good read for spring break” was the
slogan for our Book Fair, March 8-12.
Cappuccino Tuesday, March 9 brought a lot of exposure to our fair as 33 English and Social Science classes came to
the library to see the books and get Cappuccinos! Because of the wonderful support of our Lancer community, the
library was able to purchase approximately $500. worth of new books! Thanks a million to all the East staff who
supported the fair, to Peggy and Bob Miller, and the following parent volunteers: Margaret Ash, Janet Bates,
Betsy Bautz, Julie Bernard, Laura Cook, Carrie Craig, Sally Dannov, Cathy Dean, Sally Gilmore, Leslie Har-
ris, Joan Kennedy, Laurie Kirby, Paula Longan, Mary McBride, Ellen Murphy, Terri Orr, Patty Soltys, and
Jackie Wolf. We couldn’t have done it without you!
In celebration of National Poetry Month, the library will host a Poetry SLAM on Friday, April 16 during the lunch
hour. If your student enjoys writing and performing his/her original poetry, tell them to come see us! Classes and
individual students may bring brown bags, have lunch in the library, and watch the SLAM. Winners will receive
prizes!
Happy Reading! Chris Larson

SME Latin Students SME Latin students have had a very active year. In October we had our customary Junior Classi-
cal League formal induction, with candles and sashes, followed by refreshments. The most active
officers this year include Adele Daniel as Consul, Peter Bautz as Praetor, Sam Hattaway as
our overworked Quaestor, Bridget Bergin as Scriba, Robert Enders as Adjutant, and Caro-
line Miller and Meagan Dexter as Praecones. On a bitterly cold November weekend we played
Ultimate Discus at Roe Park with three other schools from the Kansas JCL. Clothing ranged from
triple jackets to bare feet. After grazing on hot pizza, our prize was a foot-long plastic toothbrush and handsome
matching comb. The SME Harbinger also published a full-page feature article about Latin at SME.
In January, we enjoyed some downtime at an evening dinner at Romano’s Macaroni Grill. Students also made Latin
thank-you cards for their former teachers at the middle schools. On a February Sunday afternoon, SME JCL hosted
Gladiatorial Games for 50 JCLers from SMSD, BVSD and Lawrence, postponed one week because of icy
roads. There was a competition for the best gladiatorial costumes, followed by spirited fighting. Pairs were chosen
by lot and surviving gladiators advanced through brackets. It’s a good thing the swords were made of hollow foam
pipe insulation! Pizza and cookies were served, but not before the pizza box tops had been converted into
shields. KJCL State Officers Adele Daniel and Peter Bautz deserve a lot of credit for revising the rules and reviving
this popular event which had lapsed for lack of a host school.
Latin students have just finished competing in the National Latin Exam. Results will be known in May. The Me-
dusa Mythology Exam is scheduled for the Tuesday following Spring Break. The KJCL State Convention will be
Saturday April 24 at SMS. SME students will compete against 12 other schools, choosing from 9 academic areas,
plus forensic events, art and costumes. The General Assembly will include school skits, yells, and a keynote
speaker. New State officers will be elected. Postmark deadline for registration and tests is April 9.
Meanwhile, Latin students at each of the 4 levels are on track to take the International Baccalaureate exam in Latin,
as well as the Advanced Placement – Vergil exam. So far, our Latin IV students have been accepted to KU, K State,
Michigan State, U of Arkansas, Carleton College, St. Louis U, Loyola in Chicago, DePauw, Hendrix College, St.
John’s College, U of Nebraska, Lawrence U in Wisconsin, and U of Texas at Austin. Most have used their Latin
awards on their college and scholarship applications.
In May we hope to have a brief evening awards ceremony, open to parents and friends, so that Latin students who
have won awards this year via CAMWS, NLE, Medusa, and KJCL can have some well-deserved public recogni-
tion. Thanks are due to students who attend JCL meetings and participate in activities, to our SME officers who put
in a surprising amount of planning time, to our State officers who attend even more meetings, to parents who sign
permission slips and who drive, and to all who pay the dues and fees which enable SME Latin students to develop
leadership skills and have fun while winning state and national awards.

Finalizing College Admissions April is the time of year when students receive their admissions decisions as well as financial aid packages from col-
leges. Making the final decision on which college a student chooses to attend can be difficult but must be made by
May 1st. All students must notify their one college of choice by providing a non-refundable deposit by this deadline.
In addition, students should notify any other college that has offered admission that they do not plan to attend. Due
to the uncertainty of the economy a few colleges may pressure students to make decisions prior to the May 1st dead-
line, especially if the college is offering a significant scholarship. It is important for students to know they have until
May 1st to make their final decisions in spite of what a college may prefer. In addition, we have seen an increase in
wait listing by colleges due to the increased numbers of applications submitted by students. Students placed on wait-
lists need to notify the corresponding college if they would like to remain on their waitlist as quickly as possible.
This allows students to express continued interest or open a spot for another student who is interested in the college.

Sports Physical Night at SM East SM East will again be holding a sports physical night in May, but the date is still to be determined. Watch
for an announcement after spring break. Any sports physical done that night will be good for the entire
2010-2011 school year.
Physical Exams for the 2010-2011 School Year Before an athlete can practice or try out, we must have a physical exam on file. Only one physical exam is
required for participation in athletics, cheerleading, and drill team for the entire 2010-2011 school year.
The exam must take place on or after May 1, 2010, and must be signed by an MD (medical doctor), DO
(doctor of osteopathic medicine), DC (chiropractor), or RPA (registered physician’s assistant). A physical
may be performed by an RNP (registered nurse practitioner), but the physical must be co-signed by a phy-
sician. Please note that physicals done at walk in clinics at Walgreens or CVS are usually performed by an
RNP and there is not a physician on hand to co-sign the physical form. An athlete will not be allowed to
practice or try out unless it is co-signed. Specific forms may be obtained from the office at SME or
downloaded from www.smesports.com. This is a KSHSAA requirement.
Just a reminder, please turn all physicals in to Diane Murdock, AD Secretary, in the office, unless directed
otherwise by your specific coach.
8th Grade Athletic Orientation Night – April 19th Monday, April 19, 2010 is the 8th Grade Athletic Orientation Night for current 8th graders and their par-
ents. If you have an 8th grader who will attend SM East in the fall of 2010, this is an informative and in-
teresting evening.
The event will start at 7:00 p.m. and will take place in the SM East Gym. The orientation will provide the
athletes, cheerleaders, and their parents the chance to meet the head coaches and receive information on
tryouts, camps, and expectations. Additionally, information regarding KSHSAA, academic guidelines,
and required paper work will be provided. Parents will also have the chance to learn about opportunities
to become involved in the All-Sports Booster Club.
If you have an 8th grader or know of someone who does, please don’t miss this educational event. For any
further questions, please contact the Athletic Office at 993-6602.
Bowling Balls Needed Wanted – Gently used 12, 13, and 14 pound bowling balls. We are in need of lighter weight bowling balls
for the Shawnee Mission East Bowling Team.
SME PTA Grants Committee fills six requests. The PTA Grants Committee awarded six grants in February and March. Your PTA dues and contributions are fund-
ing the following:
A "7880 Ken-a-vision Autofocus Digital Vision Viewer" that allows primary source material (i.e. a student es-
say) to be seen by the entire class while the teacher marks on it. It is comparable to an overhead projector but, it
uses the primary source rather than requiring production of transparencies. Mrs. Arndt-Helgesen plans to have a
demonstration for other teachers once the viewer arrives and will check it out to others who would like to use it.
60 copies of the novel “Casi Se Muere” for approximately 300 Spanish 2 students. These Spanish-language nov-
els give students the satisfaction of reading a whole book while building skills for state testing and beginning to
prepare for more advanced classes, AP exams and the IB program.
65 copies of the novel “El Viaje Perdido” for 200 Spanish 3 students, allowing each teacher to have a classroom
set. The book is an important part of the spring curriculum.
Accommodation expenses for Mr. Ogdon to attend a professional development program this summer. Mr. Og-
don is the division coordinator for Science
Bus transportation for Intro to Business & Economics students to observe production plant operations at Harley
Davidson.
Student attendance at an Ali Kemp Foundation self-defense course planned by SHARE.
