PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It has been a very busy year for Hudson Valley GRC. And probably more so for Art Breslau who had no way of anticipating the demands of work when he took on the job as President of our club. Unfortunately Art found himself in a position of having to step down as President of HVGRC because of the intense demands of his job at IBM. We thank him for his service to the club and for remaining available to help us through the transition. According to the By-Laws , the Vice-President becomes the President and that would be me. Again according to the By-Laws, Phyllis can only serve part of Bob's term, until June, and then the membership will elect someone for the remaining year of Bob's term. So in June we will be voting for two directors for

Application forms for title plaques and challenge trophies were in the last Newsletter. We need someone to receive the applications for the club annual awards and trophies and do the calculations to decide who wins each trophy. We have someone to take the trophies to the engraver and have the plaque plates made. We also have someone to make the awards booklet. Please let me know if you are interested, have any questions or know of someone we should call. Thank you, Phoebe Teramoto Until this position is filled, please send information to Paula Strazza Bulletin from the Board re: Specialty After having our specialty at the Rockland shows for the last three years, the board of directors and the former show chair felt it was time to re-evaluate the arrangement with Rockland and Wallkill. There were several factors brought up regarding the shows in Rockland from both the exhibitors and fellow club members. Some have to do with the uncertainty of the weather on the February date. So the Board of Directors did some investigation into alternate specialty arrangements and it was decided that as of 2013 we are going to hold our independent specialty at the Taconic Hills/Longshore Southport shows on June 10-11, 2013. There will be a dependent specialty Friday morning followed by our Sweepstakes and an independent specialty in the afternoon. There will be an additional supported entry on Sunday. Specialty Obedience will be held either Thursday afternoon or Friday, the final decision on the timing for that is still under discussion. The show is located at FDR Park in Yorktown Heights and we feel that this is an excellent location with plenty of shade and parking for all exhibitors. We are working on inviting judges from the list we have from the membership and making recommendations for additional judges on the weekend. The board is very excited about this new arrangement and is working hard to get

OUR STARS Having temporarily segued from field to obedience, Bruce and Audrey Coleman have added a new CDX Title for “Fanny”. She is now Blue Ribbon’s Funny Girl CDX, MH, WCX, CGC. She finished her CDX at the Hamburg, NY cluster in January. Fanny qualified in all 4 of her first 4 Open entries. She had to be entered in Open B, thanks to Leo’s OTCH. The preceding weekend in her Open debut at Syracuse Obedience Training Club, she got her first two legs with scores of 196.5 (4th place) and 192. At Hamburg she finished her titles on Friday with a 196 (3rd place) and a 195 bumper leg on Saturday. They report that Fanny is fun to train, very energetic (a big understatement) and stylish in the ring. Sue Handelman’s “Heather”, added a CD Title to her dossier, qualifying in 3

straight shows, including a 1st place and a 2nd place. She titled at the HVGRC Specialty, and added a bumper leg in March at First Dog Training Club of NJ. She is now My Stardust Melody CD, RN, SH, WCX. Fran Hellman and “Chief” went to the First Dog Obedience Club trial on March 18 and came in 1st place in Utility A with a score of 185. This was their first leg. Frank Washabaugh was the judge. He hadn’t seen Chief since he gave him a BOB win years ago, but he remembered Chief and said he couldn’t believe that he was 10 years old. This old golden man showed with such “joie de vivre”. Such a fun dog. He is now CH Goodtime’s Gone Country CDX, OA, NAJ, NAP, NAJP, Certified Delta Therapy Dog and R.E.A.D. Dog, CGC, TT.

Bonnie Oddo and “Maya” earned their UD Title in 3 straight shows with 2 first places and a second. They were the only team to qualify in Utility A at our specialty as well. Maya is now Sunflower’s My Oh Maya UD, RN, TDI, making grandma/breeder Paula Strazza very happy as well. Bonnie and Maya are shown at right with their ribbon at the speciality. Helen Sherman reports that “Spryte” retired from obedience on February 2, in a blaze of glory. On Jan 27 and 28 she took 1st Place in Open Jumpers Preferred and 2nd Place in Open FAST Preferred both at the Oriole Dog Training Agility Trial in Timonium MD. At Sand and Sea Obedience Trial in Wildwood, NJ on Feb. 2. she won the Utility B class and took second in Open B., This gave her HIT and High Combined. When they entered this show Spryte needed only one point to finish her OTCH, and earned 10! Spryte has accomplished every goal Helen set twelve years ago and then some. Helen is so proud of dual champion MACH OTCH Sunfire’s Silver Springs Spryte UDX3 OM2 JH MXF OJP OFP WC OBHF ADHF as well as many NADAC titles. Not to be outdone by her sister, “Scoot” took 1st place in Excellent A FAST on Jan 27, 2nd in Open JWW Jan 28, and 3rd in Exellent A FAST on Jan. 29th. Scoot earned 2 titles, OAJ and SF both at Oriole Dog Training Trial in Timonium MD. She also got a 3rd in junior division of Dock Dog. Scoot is now Gaylan’s Silver Springs Ducks Gotta Fly OA OAJ XF JH WCX Lisa Smith has some great show wins to report about. On her first weekend out as a 6-9 puppy “Diva”, Goodtime’s American Idol was Best Opp in sweeps at the LIGRC Specialty on Friday. She then went on to be WB/BOW for a 5 point major at the LIGRC Specialty on Saturday. Her next time up at bat was

at the Monticello KC on March 9th. She was WB for another point and won the Puppy Sporting Group. Her brother “Ramsey”, Goodtime’s Top Chef, deserves an honorable mention as he has won all his puppy classes buy one and was RWD at the Monticello KC. As always, breeder/owner handled. Honorable mention goes to Lisa’s daughter, Olivia, who prepared a bake sale and raised $ 100 for Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue! Gayle Watkins’ “Una” (Can Ch. Gaylan’s Hole in One MH MX MXJ NF WCX OD VCX CCA TT) earned her first Beginner Novice leg with a 195 and 1st place at our Specialty. “Corey” (U-CD Lornadoone Encore Encore CDX SH MX MXJ NF WCX OD VCX CCA TT) earned her first Beginner Novice leg with a 195 and 1st place at nearly 12 years old. On November 5 at the HVGRC Agility Trial, Nancy Strouss’ “Devin” finished her AX Title with a First Place! What made it extra special was that this title qualified her dam (Sunfire’s Rocky MT Chickadee) to become an Outstanding Dam (last year her CDX made her sire an OS). Nancy is proud of her girl who is now Sunfire’s The Devil Within CDX, (1 UJD leg) AX, OAJ (with 2 AXJ legs). On March 11th at the Saw Mill River KC trial and first time in Utility, Devin got her first leg with a 196 and First Place! Nancy writes “This dog is so much fun…no matter what we do she gives 100%!”

GOLDEN SUNSETS From Sandi Ver Sprill: Well my beloved Nash boy just couldn’t make it to his 14th birthday. I had to make the hardest decision of my life. He was just so frail, had to say goodbye. He was one of a kind for sure!!! ARCHEX, U-CDX, U-Ch. Trovehill Nash Bridges, UD, MX, MXJ, RAE, RL2X, RL3X, Can. CDX, AXP, AJP, RLV

From Margie Baritz: I lost my friend today. I held him in my arms here at home as my vet helped him go. He was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma in December and I made a decision at that time that I would take this journey with him, and basically stayed at his side the entire time (except for needed trips from the house). I am so glad that we were able to share this time together, as the love I got from him and him from me is something I will forever cherish. Torch was an interesting competition dog. Betsy (without whom I/we would have gotten NOWHERE!) wanted me to teach him to speak. A good stress reliever she said, so I taught him to speak. AND HE DID!....sometimes through an entire class in the ring, I might add, actually being asked to leave that ring! His tail never stopped wagging, however, as we exited (no tail between the legs except mine) did the barking/speaking ease the stress? Certainly not mine. Utility was our Waterloo and it took a year to get that title, got 3 UDX legs, and THEN, he decided that he didn’t like the car. Kicking and screaming wouldn’t do it, so we retired. No regrets now because he remained (as my vet says) the best ‘mama’s’ boy ever. Ears up, tail high, kisses for no reason other than I asked for them, chased any tennis ball, brought back bright eyed---throw another one, please? The house is quieter now. I miss those VERY high pitched barks, I miss the snuggles, I miss him. Margie U CDX Sunfire’s Keeper of the Flame UD 6/27/2000-3/12/2012 “Torch”

If a club member changes to a new e-mail address, simply join the group again using the new e-mail address. Notify the HVGRC list administrator if you want the old e-mail address cancelled. Chris Miele advises us that photographs taken of conformation classes at our Specialty may be viewed at http://hvgrc.org/main2/index.php/thirty-second-annual-specialty-show-a-obedience-trial Hopefully next year we will also have photos of obedience and rally. New Address: John and Lynn Paraskeva (see hard copy of newsletter) Lynn reports that they built their dream house on the lake, where their dogs love to swim. Isn’t that how we all choose our home sites? From GRCA Epstein-Barr Lymphoma Study This study proposes to determine whether there is a connection between dogs’ exposure to a gammaherpes virus and the subsequent development of lymphoma. The plan is to screen 500 healthy Golden Retrievers between 6 and 8 years of age to determine whether they are infected with the virus. This will be done by blood tests every six months for two years. If any of the dogs develops lymphoma, a needle biopsy will be done with your local veterinarian to determine if this virus is involved in the tumor. The board-certified oncologist conducting the study is Dr. Nicola Mason.
