Office Help Wanted
Are you retired? Are you looking for new avenues of excitement?
The Newport News Scottish Rite is looking for individuals to assist in our office daily operations each morning from 9 to 12 PM. You must be skilled in Microsoft OFFICE (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access).
We are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Duties include responding to public inquiries, tracking maintenance and repair work, ordering supplies, facilities
scheduling, etc.
If you are interested in helping out contact the Scottish Rite Office at 599-6617.
A most important reminder: The 10th Annual Ill.
William M. Johnson Golf Tournament is May 3rd. The
cost is $80 per player which includes green fees, cart,
range balls and dinner. All of the proceeds will go to the
Childhood Language Disorders Clinic at Old Dominion
University.
I would normally be writing to you and saying how wonderful it is that the weather is
turning warm but it sure feels like summer has arrived already. And while we didn’t have
much of a winter, the pull to be back outside has already got its grip on most of us.
Our Spring Reunion is fast approaching. This year we are participating in a One-Day
Statewide Conferral in Richmond on the 14th of April. This One-Day Conferral is in memory
of Ill. (and Past Grand Master) Bro. James B. Wilkerson who was serving as our Deputy
Sovereign Grand Inspector General. Mt. Wor. Bro. Jim was a great friend and mentor to all
who knew him. The Mandatory Degrees will be conferred beginning with the 4th Degree by
the Newport News Valley. All Scottish Rite Masons are invited to attend.
On Saturday, April 21st, we will again be offering our Annual Friends Dinner. The
Dinner this year is hosted by the Norfolk Valley at the Khedive Shrine Center in Chesapeake.
The event consists of a silent auction, followed by a delicious meal and finally a live auction.
Proceeds from the event will go to support the Childhood Language Disorders Clinic as well
as the House of the Temple Restoration Fund.
We have an URGENT need for office help to maintain our capabilities of providing
quality services to our members and the community. If you have a morning you can spare for
1 or 2 days a week, please call the office at 599-6617.
If you have not already signed up for the electronic bulletin board, please do so that
we may continue to send you current reminders of upcoming events throughout the Districts
and the State. This will greatly reduce our printing and mailing costs.

April already and it seems we had Spring all winter. What great weather!! As much as I hate to belabor the point about DUES, it is important that I do so. The current Valley of Newport News
membership is now at 700. We continue to lose members due to the usual reasons of death,
suspensions and demits. As your 2012 DUES were supposed to be paid before December 31, 2011
and a dues card is necessary in order to attend the Scottish Rite meetings, we have 250 members who have not paid their dues for 2012 which equates to a $25,000 loss of revenue for your Valley. Your
DUES pay for the operation of your Scottish Rite Masonic Center. PLEASE LOOK AT YOUR
DUES CARD, IF IT DOES NOT SAY 2012, PLEASE REMIT YOUR DUES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. If you have any questions concerning your dues, please let me know! Your membership
is very important to Scottish Rite Masonry and especially to the Valley of Newport News Scottish
Rite Masonry. We have at the present time, 48 members who are 50 Year Scottish Rite Veterans. The oldest NNSR member is Brother Walter E. Horton, 32º. Brother Horton received his Degrees in
1945. Brother Horton lives in Suffolk, VA.
This office would like to thank Brothers Harold K. Carney, KCCH, Alexander Watson, KCCH, E.
Van Wilson, KCCH, “Pete” Johnston, KCCH, Page S. Neale, 32º and all the others who help this Secretary and contribute their time for NNSR.
If this office can help you or if you have any questions, please let me know!!
God Bless – See you at our Stated Meetings on April 25, May 23 and June 27.

Venerable Master
Brethren of the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite, the following article addressing membership and dues in the Order of
the Knights Commander of St. Andrew was presented at the Scottish Rite January Meeting by Sir Knight William F. Overby
and is included herein for your information.
"I, as Knights Commander of St. Andrew Venerable Master, would like to clarify a couple things about the Knights Commander of St. Andrew. First, just as the knights of old, we are knights of virtue, truth and honor and are a special order formed to continue that place of high respect. Therefore, when looking around here in the Scottish Rite for new members, we look for those traits along with traits of wanting to help and assist our Scottish Rite to be the best of the best. Some have thought that just anyone could become a Knight. Let me clarify that
right now. In accordance with our by-laws, Article II, section 5, new membership in the order will be by invitation only as proposed by any member of the order and with the acceptance of the order by secret ballot. With the acceptance of the order, the prospective member will receive an invitation from the Venerable Master, detailing expectations associated with active membership, date and time of initiation. Second, some seem to be of the belief that once they become red or white hats, honorary member or an Emeritus member they can maintain their membership in the order without attending meetings or paying dues. That is completely false. Yes, you may retain your membership, help with duties and responsibilities, offer suggestions, be a committee member, etc., but you can’t vote nor be an officer, but you must continue to pay your dues each January. We love and want to keep each of you Knights but we must abide by the rules. I have not brought this up to offend any of you but to remind you that we have by-laws to guide our order. If you are a Knight and want to continue your knighthood and haven’t paid your dues or attended the appropriate number of meetings, our next meeting will be March 27th. You may contact Sir Knight
Chris Knoller, the Secretary, to pay your dues."
Sir Knights, as you know, the Chapter needs the dues to pay our bills. If you have questions concerning your dues, please
contact our Secretary or if you haven't paid your annual dues to the Knights of St. Andrew, you can do so at our Stated Meeting
on Tuesday May 22. An alternate method would be to mail your dues payment to the Secretary whose mailing information and
telephone number is shown below: Your early attention and action to this matter is appreciated.
Chris Knoller 1328 Crab Neck Road
Hudgins, Virginia 23076 Telephone 1-(804)-725-9097
The Knights Commander of St. Andrew has some exciting times coming up and I wouldn't want you to miss any of them. Just to mention a few: the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite Stated Meetings on the fourth Wednesday of each month, the
Valley of Newport News Spring Reunion Ring Ceremony 3:00 PM at the Newport News Scottish Rite Center on April 29, (all
Sir Knights are needed to participate in this ceremony) the Stated Meeting of the Knights Commander of St Andrew on
Tuesday May 22 and the Feast of Bannockburn on Tuesday June 26.
Brethren,
A new Scottish Rite year has just begun for the Valley of Newport News. We, as Scottish Rite Masons, have a lot to do and it
seems a short time to do it. As I look out my window, summer is here and I guess I missed winter & spring altogether!
First, let me provide you some important dates. April 14th is the Orient of Virginia one-day Conferral in Richmond. April 21st
is the Annual Friends Auction and Dinner benefitting the Childhood Language & Speech Disorder Clinic at ODU. It's being held
at the Khedive Shrine Temple in Chesapeake this year.
Don't forget our monthly Stated meetings held on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Come on out. We have good food
prepared by the Kitchen Committee, good fellowship, and great music. And bring your wives!
As Venerable Master, I appreciate all the officers and members who work hard each day to make our Scottish Rite a fun and
informative meeting to attend. So come on out and bring a Brother Scottish Rite Mason with you.
