Dear colleagues,

Upon successful completion of the six BASICS+ (BelgrAde Summit of Interventional CardiologistS): Clinically Integrated Approach, held in Belgrade in 2005-2010, and three CTO mini summits (two of them held in 2008 and one in 2010), with live transmissions of 248 live cases performed on our patients (including among common people even the President of the Serbian Assembly) to the audience of 300 internists/cardiologists, with an excellent success, there is no more dilemma that we simply have to continue the same way and organize an event of the kind on a yearly basis. The success of the previous workshops was complete not only in respect to the care rendered to the patients, but also in respect to education and exchange of experience. Strengthening the old ones and developing new friendships over 3 continents resulted in the third, but not even bit less important dimension of such a meeting. Benevolence and generosity of top international interventional cardiologists to participate as operators, lecturers or commentators, even to bring and donate their PCI tools which are not available in our catheterization laboratories was beyond our expectations, simply to say impressive and unforgettable. The BASICS+ 2011 is recognized and awarded by EBAC (European Board for Accreditations in Cardiology) with 25 hours of external CME credit hours, and we hope that the quality of the BASICS+ will be also continued and recognized in the years to come. For the first time, BASICS+ is accredited by Health Council of Serbia with 13 credits for lecturers and 7 credits for participants. As a continuation of a good established practice, we will organize three training courses: on trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), bifurcations and fractional flow reserve measurement. As the key feature of our workshops is clinically integrated approach, we shall continue to present and follow all the patients. By doing so, we are trying to attract and exchange ideas about patients’ well-being with the doctors who are not interventional cardiologists, but are referring patients and are taking care of them post intervention. We will organize symposium “Update Cardiology 2011” compiling lectures about the most important issues of modern cardiology. This year, we go two steps further. First of all, we are organizing a course on ‘CardioPulmonary Exercise Testing’ with complete overview of CPET: from basic physiological principles to application in clinical cardiology. The world recognized experts in that field ( Drs Alessandro Mezzani, Luc Vanhees, Sanja Mazic, Marcus Sandri, Claudio Passino) will unselfishly share their knowledge and experience through their lectures as well as practical sessions.Furthermore, during 7th BASICS+, ‘First symposium of Cardiovascular nursing society of Serbia’ is organized, which is dedicated for nurses and technicians. Needless to say that cardiovascular nurses, as well as nurses in general, are indistinguishable part of interventional team which counts for the full success not just of the procedure, but also in the long term follow up.With Serbia involved in the European “Stent for life” initiative, we are proud to present our latest achievements in obtaining higher rates of reperfusion among STEMI patients. So far, we managed to achieve 711 primary PCIs per million inhabitants in Belgrade, which was our first important target. We have to continue this way and improve reperfusion rates in whole Serbia. Important step forward regarding this issue is the opening of the new cath lab in Health center ‘Valjevo’, and I hope that if this process will continue until the whole Serbia is adequately covered. The support of the President of Serbia, Mr. Boris Tadic, as well as the president of the Board for foreign affairs of the Assembly of Serbia Prof. Dr Dragoljub Micunovic has been of paramount importance. I am also very happy to announce that this year’s BASICS+ will include few more Serbian interventional centers in live cases transmissions that were not involved previously: Clinical hospital center “Zvezdara”, Military medical academy and Health center “Valjevo”. During last year, many important things happened. First of all, new ESC Guidelines on myocardial revascularization were published. I was honored to participate in the Task force 13 that prepared these Guidelines, which is recognition and honor not only for me, but also for the whole Serbian cardiology. During last year, we continued to participate in important interventional studies and registries like STREAM, COMFORTABLE, Kare, C-cure etc. Despite World economic crisis, we managed not only to maintain but also to improve our everyday practice. This would not be possible without the continuous generous support of the course and Scientific Director of the BASICS +Visiting Professor of the Medical School of Belgrade, Dr William Wijns, chairman of the latest ESC/EACTS Guidelines on Myocardial Revascularization and Chairman of PCR. His energy and wisdom have been a great inspiration for all involved in the organization of BASICS+.

Miodrag Ostojic, M.D., Ph.D., FESC, FACC, FSCAIProfessor of Cardiology/MedicineAcademician of Serbian Academy of Sciences and ArtsHead, Division of CardiologyClinical Center of SerbiaPresident of the Working group on interventional cardiology,Cardiology Society of SerbiaPresident of the Serbian Heart Foundation

Nothing less could be said for Professor Dr Georgios Sianos, Course director. Also, I would like to express my gratitude to our mentor, friend and teacher Academician Vladimir Kanjuh for his energy devoted to science, clear vision, and continuous support.During the forthcoming BASICS+ we will have sessions on STEMI and STREAM study organized by the Prof. Dr Frans Van de Werf, chairman of the ESC guidelines on STEMI as well as PI of the STREAM. Not less important is the fact that Prof. Dr Stavros Konstantinides will chair the session on Pulmonary embolism and PEITHO study of which he is the PI.With sorrow I have to say that the death of the Emeritus professor Dr Srecko Nedeljkovic, my teacher, mentor and friend, previous Scientific Director of the BASICS + and the death of Dr Aleksandar Doganov, previous Co Director of the BASICS are the great losses not just for us, but the whole medical community. Recent catastrophic earthquake in Japan is a tragic event for the people of Japan. Bearing in mind the diligence and the spirit of Japanese people, I am sure that they will overcome this tragedy. Japanese operators and our traditional BASICS+ Course directors Professors Shigeru Saito and Osamu Katoh are not coming for this BASICS+ and we hope that we will see them on the next BASICS+ to come. It is hard to express our gratitude for all their generosity and unselfish support for all these years. This year, BASICS plus is organized under the auspices of Ministries of health and science of the Republic of Serbia, as well as our traditional patrons TRH Crown Prince Alexander and Princess Katherine.BASICS+ would not be possible without the support of the Departments of Cardiosurgery and vascular surgery and Institute of anesthesiology and reanimathology. We must emphasize the great input and understanding of the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade, their Dean Academician Prof. dr Vladimir Bumbasirevic and the Board of the Dean with Academicians Prof. dr Predrag Pesko, Prof. dr Nebojsa Lalic, Prof. dr Dragan Micic, as well as Prof. dr Slobodan Savic, Prof. dr Tanja Jovanovic and Prof. dr Tatjana Simic. It is of particular importance to note that we had enormous help of the interventional cardiology companies, pharmaceutical industry, ‘Prva srpska televizija’ television, National television, as well as Telekom Srbija Joint Stock Telecommunications Co. and their CEO Branko Radujko, to render live coverage of the event. We could never succeed in organizing this meetings without generous help of “Publishing House for Text Books“ and their CEO Miloljub Albijanic. We do hope that all of them will continue to offer us such a generous support throughout the workshops to follow. Our efforts are generously supported and understood by the Prof. Aleksandar Vuksanovic, CEO of the Fund for the health care of the Republic of Serbia. My special thanks goes to the whole staff of the Division of Cardiology, especially Catheterization laboratories staff, leadership of the Clinical Center of Serbia, CEO Dr Djordje Bajec, Director of Central Pharmacy Office Mr. Ph, V. Ciganovic, Mr V. Kosanovic, Mr D. Bisevac, Mr D. Tanaskovic from the Technical department of Clinical center of Serbia and last but not least to the skeleton of the Workshop’s organization starting with Dr B. Beleslin and Dr M.A. Nedeljkovic. Special thanks goes to “Mladost tourist“ organization, and their CEO Radomir Podinic, as well as to Mr Vojin Varnai, Mr Slobodan Jankovic , Mr Jovan Pavlovic and Mr Bosko Buha. I wish that all our friends, faculty members who devote us their precious time and energy, interventional cardiology companies, pharmaceutical industry, ‘Prva srpska televizija’ television and all participants in the milieu where the border between faculty and attendants is not any longer visible, join us in our mutual endeavor which will certainly result in another successful workshop. We believe that our meeting will further promote knowledge of cardiovascular disease and further stimulate investigation. The previous six BASICS+ and our everyday practice have shown that Serbian Cardiology is ready to be an equal partner in investigational efforts worldwide.
