Canadians are heading to the polls May 2, todetermine whether it is time to vote in a new gov-ernment, or keep the one we have.

Late last month the Conservative Party was over-thrown ater a coalition was ormed and a vote onon-confdence was issued.

Michael Ignatie and the Liberals brought thevote orth in the House o Commons.

Crowoot incumbent MP Kevin Sorenson hasbeen campaigning since parliament dissolved.

I eel strongly that the vote was not justifed, said Sorenson.

The vast majority o Canadians, and our Con-servative government, strongly urged them to sup-port Budget 2011, the Next Phase o Canadas Eco-nomic Action Plan, so that we could continue to

nurture the ragile economic recovery in Canada, protect jobs, and continue creating jobs and eco-nomic growth.

He said the current election has caused bothdomestic and oreign investors in our country topause. Sorenson said Canada is seen as a beacono economic prosperity and social stability in to-days world.

The Opposition Coalition has risked this se-cure position by causing an election that, unlessthe Conservative Party wins a majority o seats, could lead to Canada being governed by a weakand tenuous coalition, reliant on the support othe Bloc Quebecois, a party dedicated to breakingup Canada, said Sorenson.

He said there are numerous policies and pro-grams provided by the Conservative governmentthat are now in jeopardy because the coalition

brought down the government. Sorenson saidmany Canadians were looking orward to the im-plementation o measures in the budget.

For example, we intend to provide an enhancedGuaranteed Income Supplement or many seniors,up to $600 or single seniors and $840 or cou-ples, said Sorenson.

We want to orgive up to $40,000 o the loansnew amily physicians have, and up to $20,000 ornurses, to attract them to our rural communities.Families trying to provide their children with artseducation, music and dance lessons or example, will have a tax credit.

MLA Arno Doerkson was in Strathmoreto speak to his constituents and updatethem on how things are going in Alberta. He talked generally about where wereat economically in the province and

about the strong investment that is beingseen across the province, which he saidis consistent with the growth seen overthe last couple of years.

Specically the record land sales foroil and development that has taken placeover the course of the last year, saidDoerkson.

Particularly, I think the last sale of theyear saw a record price for one particu-lar land base. Overall the year was a re-cord year for land sale revenue for theprovince.

He said it indicates condence fromthe oil and gas sector in continuing to

develop the oil and gas industry in thisprovince, and it bodes well for a widerange of service industries that servicethe oil and gas industry.

I think were seeing that across manyparts of the province, where companiesare a little busier than theyve been, theres some optimism back in the sys-

tem, said Doerkson.Clearly the last number of years have

been challenging for small businesses, but I think theres optimism going for-ward and thats certainly positive.

Members of Wildrose Alliance are cur-rently campaigning for their own elec-tion and Doerkson said its not a surprisethere will be someone representing theoppositions interest. He said he wouldcontinue to stay focused on representingthe people in the area. The upcomingfederal election may not directly affecthim, but he said they would denitelyfollow the results.

The Conservative Party of Canadawants to continue to be Here for Can-ada when it comes to seeing our na-tion through the fragile recovery from

the global recession that is taking holdacross Canada, said Sorenson. On May 2, Canadians will choose

between stable national government, and a reckless Coalition; between alow-tax plan for jobs and growth, anda high-tax agenda that will stall our re-covery, kill jobs and set families back.

Also in the running for Crowfoot isNDP candidate Ellen Parker, who wasalso a candidate in the 2004, 2006 andthe 2008 federal elections. In 2005,Parker was elected to the NDP Federalcouncil, and re-elected in 2009.

Im excited actually. Im thinkingwell be able to clear the air and startfresh, said Parker, when asked about

the upcoming election. She said part of the NDPs platform

is to really focus on getting the econo-my to work for families, and nd waysof creating spaces in the budget thatwill get seniors out of poverty. TheNDP also want to help expand health-care so they can get doctors and nurs-es working in the rural areas, among

other things. Parker feels the vote ofnon-condence was justied.

It was getting harder and harder toget things through parliament that wasin the best interest of Canadians, saidParker.

Very difcult to decide on budget-ary items when all the informationsnot given to parliament, and I thinkits quite a shame that we go down inhistory as the only country, in all ofthe commonwealth, where a parlia-ment has been dismissed based oncontempt charges.

    The other candidate running for

Crowfoot is Konrad Schellenberg, withthe Green Party of Canada. Schellen-berg was unavailable at press time.

Every year Crowther Me-morial Junior High studentsgo to eastern Canada to seewhat the other side of thecountry has to offer. One bigfundraiser is held each yearfor it, a spaghetti dinner. Thisyear marks the 25th year forthe trip.

I wanted the children tosee the capital of Canada andthe oldest city in Canada,Quebec with all the build-ings and everything and justthe different outlook, saidBev Upshaw, who began thetradition.

    She has always enjoyed

traveling, and said she usedto enjoy the small schooltrips she use to take whenshe was in high school. She

said she wanted to providethe same sort of things tosome of the kids she taught.Upshaw taught school ineastern Canada, before com-ing west to teach. She startedat Westmount Elementary, where she took a Grade 6class to eastern Canada for10 days.

It was good, we had agood time, said Upshaw.

Id love to be going on itagain, but its not the samebecause I dont know thesekids. Id love to be goingwith them.

This year there will be 96Grade 9 students headingto Ontario and Quebec. Thetrip will cost each studentapproximately $1,375 andjust under $7,000 was raised

at the annual dinner whichwill help offset some of theexpenses. There was close to800 people in attendance forthe dinner, which was com-pletely run by the students.

TOWn OF STRATHMORIn late 2010, the Town of Strathmore commissioned the new

Wastewater Treatment Plant. This plant is a Biological NutrientRemoval (BNR) plant which was needed to meet/exceed the higher

standards required by Alberta Environment in the Towns Waste-water Approval, as well as to increase the Towns wastewatertreatment capacity. As a result of the changes to the wastewatertreatment plant, Operational costs have increased in the plant, aswell as a result of new processes resulting from the new plant. One of the more signicant changes as a result of the new plant isthe production of biosolids thickened waste collected as part ofthe treatment process. Biosolids then need to be disposed of eitherthrough landll, composting or otherwise, and disposal methods/costs of biosolids have proven to be a challenge. As a result ofthese changes, it was necessary for the Town to increase sewerrates in 2011.

The increased costs associated with the new plant resulted in a

budget decit of approximately $1.15M. With a movement to focuson variable costs, as opposed to xed costs in Utility pricing, thedecision was made to increase variable sewer rates to recover thedifference as follows:

2011 Dect (estmated) $1,150,000Annual Blled Water Volume (approx.) 1,100,000 m32010 Varable Sewer Rate $.63/m3Requred Rate increase per m3 $.97/m3 (154% increase)2011 Total Varable Sewer Rate $1.60/m3

Project Hope can only stayin the school systems in Strath-more with the help of grants

and generous donations fromthe community. On March 28,Kim Currie, on behalf of En-cana, presented a cheque toProject Hope for $5,000.

We look for the help becausethe whole program is 100 percent community funded, saidCorinne Ball, a member of theProject Hope board.

We need about $120,000 to$150,000 a yearin order tokeep the program running.

    We know we interrupt some

of the community members, sowe try to help out in the com-munity as much as we can, said Currie, about Encanas do-nation.

Project Hope is a group of

people who fundraise in thecommunity to provide art ther-apy, music therapy and physi-cal education therapy to stu-dents with special needs in theschools. While the project runsin conjunction with the school, the school system doesnt pro-vide funding.

It helps to, obviously keepfunding the programs that Proj-ect Hope provides, which is re-ally good for having the kidslearn to express themselves in

a lot of different ways, saidChris Iversen, Senior Skillsteacher at Crowther MemorialJunior High.

It gives such a fantastic, real alternative, way for kids to

learn and to show what theyvelearnedinstead of just the tra-ditional classroom choices, es-pecially being a life skills basedprogram that kids can showwhat theyve learned and learnthings lots of different ways.

Project Hope has been inStrathmore for almost 15 years. Two of the founding mem-bers had children with spe-cial needs and they felt therewas a need for more focusedprograms for kids with special

needs at the schools. It beganin Westmount Elementary withabout ve kids and the projectwas such a success it has con-

Every year at the Project Hope Gala, one of a kind artwork, created by Proj-ect Hope art therapy students, has beenauctioned off to help raise funds to re-tain the program in Strath-more. This year things arebeing done a little different-ly. For the last few weeks, and until the end of June, two different pieces beingauctioned, can be found atlocal businesses.

Its in the Co-op rightnow. The piece was done

by a Project Hope studentnamed Brock, its a paintingof Newfoundland, which iswhere Brock is from origi-nally, said Corinne Ball, a member ofthe Project Hope board.

Brock Gale is a Grade 12 transitionsstudent at Strathmore High School. Withhis painting is a little bio about him, let-ting people know he enjoys gym class-es, cooking and spending time withfriends. Gale also likes wrestling, skiingwith his brother and working at Co-op.He plans to work full time after school.

Ball said they want to keep eachpainting showcased in the communi-

ty for six to nine weeks. Ball said thepainting will be in Co-op for anothercouple of weeks before it moves to an-other location in town. She said she isnot sure where they will be moving itto next, but the idea is for everyone tohave a chance to see the artwork.

One hundred per cent ofthe money that they bid willgo directly to Project Hope.It will go directly to fund-ing the therapies for thestudents so they can contin-ue with their Project Hopetherapy, said Ball.

The new piece will be outin mid-May and at the end

of June they will bring thelast piece in, ending of theart auction for this year.

Each piece is individual, one of a kind, and its kind of a coolthing to have in your house and a goodway to support the cause, said Ball.

This year the theme for Project Hopesannual Gala is Experiencing Hope. Onebig difference this year is instead of justbidding on items, people will be ableto bid on experiences. The experienceswill be things like tickets to RosebudTheatre, or movie passes or ski passes. The Gala will be taking place on May 13at the Travelodge.

Watch what you TouchUnlike the u, which is typically bad in the

winter months, germs are a problem all yearlong. Youd be surprised where youll fnd germs

    just lingering.

    1. Avoid shaking hands This might seem

impossible or some, but dont do it i you dontneed to. Get in the practice o washing your

hands requently. Get in the practice o washingyour hands requently. Wash them with soap

and warm water or at least 20 seconds. Lessthan that will not be eective. Always wash

beore and ater eating, a bathroom visit, coughing or sneezing, playing with pets or

blowing your nose. A lot o people today areusing anti-bacterial soaps. They are great

or killing bacteria, however they kill the goodbacteria as well. So you shouldnt use those

products all the time, you need good bacteria tohelp your body fght o the bad bacteria.

    2. Dont touch Avoid touching buttonswhen you can. Like a public phone, or a

phone on another desk. Use your sleeve whenpressing the button in the elevator or use your

elbow. When you really think about it, in thecourse o only one day we touch hundreds i not

thousands o things. Germs that cause virusesand bacteria are within our touch everywhere

we go. Its no wonder people get sick. I knowits impossible to go through your day and not

touch anything. But i you are more aware o thegerm environment around you, it can help you

avoid all the unnecessary instances. And keepyour hands away rom your ace.

    3. Shopping carts When youre doing thegrocery shopping, wipe down the cart handle

with an anti-bacterial wipe beore touchingit. Many o the supermarkets provide them in

the cart area. The person who used that cartbeore you maybe have been sick with a cold or

u and avoid placing resh produce items in theseat area, as thats where children in diapers sit.

    4. Disinfect your desk The average ofcedesk has more germs on it than a toilet seat.

Believe it or not, its true! Between the phone, the desk and keyboard, there are a lot o germs,

so wipe down your desk and everything on in on

a regular basis.5. Bathroom visits When you use the

bathroom, always use the frst stall. Most

people use the ones in the middle so they getthe dirtiest. Never set your purse on the oor in

the stall, the oor in ront o the toilet is usuallydirtier than the toilet itsel. Use the hook on

the back o the door or hoop the purse handlearound your neck.

    6. Kitchen/break room Bathroom andkitchen sponges/rags, and even cutting boards

are breeding grounds or germs and bacteria.Once again more germ prone than a toilet! A

great way to sterilize a sponge is to put it in themicrowave or 2 minutes. Microwaving it or

2 minutes on ull power will kill more than 99%o the bacteria, viruses and parasites as well

as spores. Mix 1 part bleach to 4 parts warmwater to clean your cutting boards/countertops,

and this will eliminate the bacteria and disinectthese areas.

Fighting germs, viruses and bacteria is a yearround fght. By taking a ew simple steps in the

course o your day, you can greatly reduce yourrisk o getting sick.

Yep its Canada post or not post as the case is.We have our post boxes on Rural Route 1, located

on George Freeman Trail - mail didnt turn up or threedays a ew weeks ago,

Then a sign was taped to the mail boxes saying pickup your post at the Main Post Ofce in Strathmore. They we were told the ground in ront o the boxes

was in poor condition and to pick up (their mail) at themain ofce in Strathmore. Well at least they put a signup this time, this was an improvement.

Yes with the thaw, the ground was muddy. They in-dicated at the post ofce that they will put some graveldown, (but) obviously with all the snow, this wasntpossible.

Their next solution lets send a survey out to fndout the location o up to 30 customers o the post box-es and then move the post boxes.

What!!!!! This would mean having to change all docu-

It took nearly a decade, but RosebudCentre was nally able to open theirdoor, just in time for the 2011 season. The centre saw an expansion to RosebudTheatres Mercantile dining room, allow-ing an extra 10,000 square feet of dining, shopping and meeting space.

The architectural design of the Rose-bud Mercantile, in an old-time bank andlivery stable theme, is keeping with the

unique heritage values of the hamlet ofRosebud, said Bob Davis, Rosebud The-atres Executive Director.

The facility will be an integral part ofRosebuds renowned dining and theatreexperience, the revenues of which helpsupport the education and training oftheatre artists from across Canada.

Some of the areas are built with timberover 130 years old and saved from theCPR railway.

Its kind of nice that its been broughtback to life, said Davis.

It began as a ve million dollar project, with coordinators raising four millionbefore construction even began. In lateAugust 2010, Encana donated another$150,000 to help with the project, do-nating $350,000 overall. The new centreprovides a space for weddings and largegatherings. On March 25, opening night, one woman was already upstairs settingup for her daughters wedding.

The new dining area allows everyoneto be seated at once for dinner, insteadof having a line up of guests waiting. Theofcial grand opening for the new centre

will take place some time in May.March 25 also marked opening nightfor the new season at Rosebud Theatre, and the rst play of the season, A BrightParticular Star. The play, written by Artis-tic Director of Pacic Theatre in Vancou-ver and playwright Ron Reed, is the storyof 19th century writer George McDonaldand his family, who inspired J.R.R Tolk-ien and C.S Lewis.

Everything that is known about LiliaMacDonald, and the MacDonald familytheatricals in general, is represented inthe play, said Reed, who was in atten-dance for opening night.

The script was rst developed at theLambs Players Writers Week in San Di-ego, and premiered as an Emerging Art-

ist Showcase, as part of Pacic Theatresmainstage season in 2006. It also had asubsequent college production in Geor-gia in 2008. The story ts with all theknown details of Lilias theatrical life, her relationships with Mark Twain, LewisCarroll, Octavia Hill, Kate Terry, CharlesGranet de la Rue and, of course, her fam-ily, though the timeline is compressed.

The sometimes-dry humour scatteredthroughout the play had the audiencelaughing, all the while falling in lovewith Lilia and her plight.

Wonderful performances. Lilia wasabsolutely radiant. There was no troubleseeing in her the same rising star thatMark Twain, Lewis Carroll and othersalso saw. I loved Mark Twains brilliantlydry wit, Octavia Hills wonderful enthu-siasm and support for Lilia and Jenny.Jennys friendship for Lilia was wonder-ful, especially once it became more com-plicated in Act Two, said Reed.

George and Louisa MacDonald, Liliasparents, were beautifully paired (its) nothard to believe theyre a married couple

offstage as well. George with all the im-petuosity and enthusiasm of an over-grown boy, Louisa embodying both thetenderness of a loving mother and thetoughness of a sergeant.

Reed continued on to say there weremany more highlights in all of the actorsperformances, that it was a wonderfullyvaried and committed cast that were apleasure to watch. A Bright ParticularStar will be on the Rosebud Stage untilMay 14, and is a wonderful way to spendan evening.

Opening night for the new season at Rosebud

Theatre, started with a little bit of a hitch, whichthe crowd quickly forgot as they becae en-grossed in the lives of the mcDonald faily.

A unique, grassroots movement issweeping through parts of rural Al-berta, with the main focus on trying tobring people back to the Special Areas. The Special Areas consist of ve mil-lion acres in southeast Alberta, boundby Consort (north), Hanna (west), Sas-katchewan border (east) and the SouthSaskatchewan River (south).

Returning to Rural, R2R, began lastyear and is a youth retention and at-traction 2.0 program, designed to reachpeople aged 21 to 45.

So our focus and emphasis is usingsocial media and technology to connectwith young people that have left ourarea, or that have never lived here, andlet them know that there is opportunityin our communities, and connect themwith those opportunities, said ChristieDick, R2Rs economic development of-cer.

R2R is highlighting the fact that highspeed internet is available through theentire region, and that people can runtheir businesses basically from any-where in the world now

Were focused on young people, butyoung families are our real target, orpeople thinking about having a family. So weve been targeting 21 to 45, saidDick.

We really felt that those were the peo-ple that were going to come back, and

have families, and create their own jobsand be thinking about making changesin their life.

While our focus is bringing and keep-ing young people in Albertas SpecialAreas, Return to Rural is a completelyscalable idea that any rural communitycould undertake. The inspiration of us-ing social media to connect with youngpeople, and developing a new industryusing technology, is an option every ru-ral community would be crazy not to atleast consider.

Dick further explained that WheatlandCounty and Strathmore, because of thehigh percentage of commuters, wouldsee changes if R2R were implementedinto the area.

More dollars would be spent withyour local businesses because many ofthose commuters would be able to workfrom home, or open satellite ofces thatwould decrease the amount of leakagein dollars going from your economy intoCalgarys, said Dick.

Volunteerism and Quality of Lifewould improve because commut-ers would have more time to spend athome, and in the community, therebyallowing them to engage more closelyin the community in which they live andwork.

Dick said since beginning R2R, theyhave gained increased brand awarenessin their region, and they have been get-ting the attention of their target audi-ence who have been deciding to makethe Special Areas their home.

National Scrapbook Day is a day whenladies get together to scraplift, scrapstick, scrapstamp and have a scraptacular funtime.

Creative Memories (a scrapbookingcompany) started this event a number ofyears ago and people all over the countrygather to make beautiful pages of memo-ries together usually sometime in April orMay.

Photo albums from the past have noth-ing on this new hobby. There is a lotof cutting and pasting for the diehards ofthe groups; and for the more savvy, thecomputer age of digital scrapbooking isall the rage. It is amazing to see all theparaphernalia, papers, stickers, and spe-cial machinery that cut things out withoutpicking up a pair of scissors. People canbuy paper and actually match it to what-ever their projects call for from companies

like Creative Memories, Stampin Up andClose To My Heart as well as bigger storesthat carry hobby supplies in the city.

Traci Rasmussen, from Standard startedworking for Creative Memories over a de-cade ago, and this year marks her thir-teenth year hosting this weekend event.

Rasmussen also holds an event calledCroptoberfest on a weekend in the fall. Many of the same ladies come out year af-ter year and have watched the techniquesdevelop and change over the years. Thescrapbooking industry has really grownin Standard as Rasmussen also makes ar-rangements in January and February for2-3 weekend-long getaways at a bed andbreakfast called North Bow Lodge justoutside of Carseland.

    Despite the inclement spring storm,

    Times Junior Reporter

The second annual Designing andLearning for Tomorrow: A Speak Out Fo-rum was held in Carbon, AB, this pastFriday, April 1. Several schools withinthe Golden Hills School Division werein attendance, including thirteen stu-dents from Strathmore High School. Thestudents at the event were able to voicewhat they thought was working, whatwas not working, and what is neededto be done in order to create positivechanges throughout the Golden Hills

School Division. The day was lled with several gamesand group activities, all encouraging thestudents to come together with their dif-ferent insights and give feedback to theGHSD in how it could improve itself as asystem. The superintendent of the GHSD,Dianne McBeth, made it clear that the in-formation that was being gathered fromthe students was extremely importantand will impact how the school divisiondecides to use their resources and fund-ing.

Students might not see their exactwording in the education plan, but welook for the really big themes (that werediscussed in the forum), said McBeth.

One of the larger themes that was dis-

cussed throughout the day was a strongemphasis on how all students vary intheir learning styles. The students feltthat having their knowledge assessed in acourse based upon a single standardizedtest was not a true reection of what thatstudent may have learned throughout theentire course. The provincial diploma ex-ams which account for fty percent of astudents mark, may appeal to one typeof learner but does not fairly reect all.

McBeth believes that the school systemhas been doing standardized tests for

enough years to know that it skews theopportunity for other students to expressthat they learn and present their ideas indifferent ways. McBeth also believes thatif the school division wanted to samplethe kids learning in certain areas of thecurriculum on a broad scale, they coulddo so, but not necessarily turn that intoa mark.

Teachers as well have issues withthe weight of the diploma exams, saidMcBeth. They only measure a certainamount of learning and we know thereare problems with that. When we createthings like standardized tests, it is almost

like were afraid the kids arent learningand afraid that the teachers arent teach-ing. The teachers end up teaching forthe test and the kids work to get a markon the test. Thats not really the heart oflearning. The heart of learning comesfrom the deep desire to know.

GHSD hopes to take a new directionwith understanding that the purpose ofkids learning is not to become walkingencyclopaedias, because the informationis so readily available to them. GHSDhopes to focus on different survivalskills, such as problem solving, work-ing together, skills in written and verbalcommunication, the ability to analyzeand show curiosity and imagination.

According to McBeth, for change to be

occur, the Minister of Alberta Education,Dave Hancock must hear the concernsfrom the students themselves. Ratherthan complaining amongst one another, students need to speak up and demandchange from the decision makers.

Following the forum, SHS studentFranquie Corallini strongly hopes thatthe GHSD got the direct message.

I hope that they start prepping kids(for the future), said Corallini. Its dis-couraging whats going on right now -discouraging.
